[GUIDE] Clean CM13/RR install with no FC and working Camera & SD. (ZE551ML) - ZenFone 2 General

A lot of people asked me why i had a fully working Resurrection Remix M on my ZF2 (ZE551ML) while actually they're having troubles with Camera (not working at all/FC), Gapps and/or with initial setup.
Well, actually it isn't really difficult.
I read some posts about CM13 ports for other phones, and I figured out that we had alot of common bugs, such as the Camera, for example.
Well, let's see how to solve this, starting from a simple and clean install.
Download CM13 or CM13 based ROM, and OpenGapps x86 for 6.0. KEEP SURE TO DOWNLOAD THE FULL PACKAGE (NOT THE STOCK ONE!!!) OR THE SMALLER ONES, KEEP SURE THEY DON'T REPLACE AOSP CAMERA WITH GOOGLE CAMERA!
Perform a full TWRP or Nandroid Backup.
Perform a full wipe (wipe data, cache, dalvik)
Install CM13/CM13 based ROM
Fix Permissions (for TWRP, it's under the Advanced menu)
Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
Reboot to System, then wait for the phone to boot. (~10min)
Config your phone, and now you'll see that Camera it's fully working now.
Reboot to Recovery
Install Gapps, then wipe cache and dalvik cache again.
Reboot to System and enjoy your CM13
EXTRA: To get the ASUS PixelMaster Camera working, you should download the flashable zip from THIS thread, and flash it in TWRP. DON'T TRY THE SUPER RESOLUTION MODE AT ALL OR CAMERA IMAGES WILL BE RENDERED GLITCHED UNTIL YOU RE-DO A CLEAN INSTALL!
Tested on ZE551ML with Resurrection Remix M v5.6.0r3 build 20151230, and CM13 NIGHTLY 20160102.
It's fully working, also with Retrica and PixelMaster Camera.
I'll post some screenshots soon.
When i'll find some friends with ZE550ML, i'll try this also on that version of the phone, but i'm pretty sure this will work, as the workarounds I just found are common, for other non-ASUS devices, which are also ARM!

Could you please explain how I would install TWRP? Seen alot of different guides, but most of them are old ones or leave a few questions still remaining...

You need to unlock your bootloader first. If you need help, we can talk via PM (Private Messages), because there are alot of threads and guides about this.

Added to index, thanks for your work!

Now what?

Hi guys, new to the Android rooting community and just wanted some help figuring out what's what.
Today I bought a Samsung Galaxy S4, unlocked, I9505. It's on Android 5.0.1 (I believe that's lollipop?). Now I just wondered now that I have rooted it, what do I do now? I've rooted and done nothing else other than check my root permission which I have. I wanted to install a clean, stock Google Play Edition rom and then remove the bloatware from it and use that as my phone. How am I doing that? Do I need to have rooted a specific Android version to install roms? I was reading around about a custom recovery, do I already have that installed from root or is that another thing that I need? :crying:
Any help would be appreciated as I am super new to this having come from iPhone jailbreaking.
Thanks!
You need a custom recovery to install just about any custom rom. Custom recoveries don't from rooting, you have to flash it manually. I recommend TWRP. Just google twrp s4. They also have an installation guide. After you flashed TWRP you can flash one of the GPE roms from the forum. There are 2. One is untouched and the other has slight modifications.

Thanks for the reply, at this moment I just need all the info I can get before I do anything! Is TWRP the best? I'm sure "which is the best recovery" is asked a lot, so I'll have a look around. Do they do different things or are the premise of them generally the same? And that's fantastic about GPE, so I won't need to upgrade any higher than 5.0.1?

Just tried installing the JFLTE-GPE latest version using TWRP and it's not worked, I'm stuck in TWRP :/ Any help?
Did you perform a full wipe of the system, data, and cache before flashing gpe?

Hey, I just looked around and one video I watched did not specify that I needed to wipe System. Just tried wiping System, darvik cache, cache and data so I'll see what happens and let you know if it's worked fingers crossed
EDIT: No, it hasn't worked, I've been kicked straight back into TWRP screen again Any ideas?

Normally you have to wipe data, cache, dalvik cache and system before flashing a rom. This can either be done manually or as a factory reset from within the recovery. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't boot. Try another kernel. Or you might want to try the AOSP rom by JDC team. It's basically the same as GPE, but without any of the google apps. But those can be flashed. You need to download a gapps package. The most popular seems to be from open gapps. Choose ARM, the android version of the rom and then the type of package. Pico is the smallest and will give you only the google play store.
---------- Post added at 08:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:54 PM ----------
And don't change recoveries. The others are outdated. TWRP is the only one up-to-date. You might also try another version of TWRP. The newest is 2.8.7.2 I think.

Vanir ROMs

For whatever reason, team Vanir doesn't maintain an official thread in this forum, even though they have been actively developing ROMs for Z1c ever since KK. @Wind07 started his own thread, with his own builds and links to official builds, but has abandoned it - http://forum.xda-developers.com/sony-xperia-z1-compact/development/rom-vaniraosp-t2874690 I have been a fan of their ROMs since KK, so decided to post some links.
Vanir currently has 2 ROMs in active development for Z1c: Vanir ROM, (http://www.emccann.net/nuclearmistake/VanirAOSPNightlies/amami/), and Commotio ROM, (http://www.emccann.net/dho/3-Vanir-mirror/4-nighties/), and here's their Gapps link - http://www.emccann.net/dho/5-Gapps/
NOTICE **** Latest builds of Vanir ROM do not boot. The last build that booted was 3/10, which runs great, but no camera. I've posted on G+ about it, and dev says looking into it, (https://plus.google.com/111931660643822970788/posts/MV7QYHVZr1r). I can't get the bootloop to show up in adb, so can't get a log. If someone else can, he'd appreciate it. Newest Commotio ROM boots and has camera.
Is this the recommend way to flash it:
Instructions
fastboot boot.img in zip (here is something missing I think)
boot to recovery
format system, data, cache and wipe dalvik
flash zip
reboot
flash gapps(optional)

Probably no need for all that. Just do a wipe, then flash ROM, then gapps, and reboot.
4/13 build is good. Still no camera though, (although it's interesting that if you set 'launch camera on button press' in settings, camera app opens, but with 'cannot connect to camera' message). I only tested it without Gapps, but don't think that would make a difference...

I have tried many ROMs for my A2017U, but non of them works well

First, I unlocked bootloader and installed twrp with axon7toolkit.
Then I have tried following roms.
1. AospExtended-v5.4-axon7-20180421-0700:
no sound when calling, /data does not shown, crashes when voice call from wechat.
2. BootleggersROM-Oreo4axon7.2.1-Stable-Unshishufied-20180331:
no sound when calling, have not test other
3. dotOS-O-v2.1-axon7-UNOFFICIAL-20180404
(downloaded but not tested)
4. A2017(U)(N-B35)_AROMA_SL!M1_DF!NR_by_raystef66
always crashes before I can finish initial setup
5.lineage-14.1-20180425-nightly-axon7-signed
password needed to start android, but I do not know what is the pass word
6. A2017Uv1.1.0B35_StockSystem_by_DrakenFX
this is the only one which calling works, wechat voice call works.
Rooted with Magisk16.0.
Problems with original ROM still exist:
1. battery drain pretty fast,
2. show 31000 and roaming for verizon.
New problem after unlock bootloader,
bootloader unlocked warning when startup
new problem after root:
crashes when start es file explorer:
testing others
The last resurrection remix(official nougat) is solid and so is AOKP. I'm just wondering what kernel would be best for a nougat Lineage-based rom on B35
thanks for reply.
I will temporally stay with stock rom B35. The unlocked bootloader warning is removed now.
The only two issues with stock rom are battery drain, verizon signal label.
I may give resurrection remix a try later.

Are you installing the bootstack too? I have the same model and don't have any of those issues. I run encryption so I'm stuck on the 2/24 build of AOSP-eXtended, but the only bug I have is a slow initial GPS lock. Otherwise it runs solid.
Sounds like you didn't follow all the directions.
I am sure I followed instructions strictly.
I have also tried to flash each ROM start from specified Bootloader, Modem, Bootstack, then ROM in the post.

i'm pretty sure you're doing things wrong:
-No sound on calls is fixed by toggling speakerphone on and off
-Password on boot is because your internal storage is encrypted, because you installed a ROM and forgot to flash Magisk or SuperSU before booting for the first time.
-Everything crashing on slim roms can be because you failed to wipe. Anyways simply wipe evetrything and try flashing it again, it'll probably be fixed.
-5 second screen is not a problem, it's a feature. There are ways to fix that anyways: Remove unlocked bootloader inscription by Raystef66 should work, and it is safe. And also there's NFound's zip on the Themes and Apps section, but it'a very risky (you might end up having to unbrick your phone).
I'm running LineageOS 15.1 Oreo based room currently and all seems well except there seems to be no working camera. Ive tried many and no seem to work or install correctly no matter how I flash. I tried to go back to stock 35 but got stuck at boot screen for an extremely long time so I was force to pick another Oreo room to go back to in order for me to get my phone to work. Do you guys know of a working camera I can install that you have personally tried with Oreo and links would be helpful. I tried a lot on xda so far to no avail. Thanks in advance. Or link me to what I need to get back to stock 35. Also, LineageOS 15.1 has ridiculous battery life. In a good way.

I tried GCam but the rear camera didn't work. It's weird but that was the consensus that a lot of people was having. I heard that the ZTE Stock 13 v2 camera works but I haven't been able to find a link to anyone that actually has it. Everyone that I've come across has had a link, but when you get there it's for b04, 05, o7 Oreo or something else. I've tried those also and it hasn't work on LineageOS. I might go back to Nougat 7.1.1 if I can find the proper way to do so.
OK, I have resolved the problem with Password on boot.
I have tried many times, every time after flashed twrp, then I boot into twrp recovery, then do following steps:
1. advance wipe cache/dalvik cache/data/system,
2. install bootloader, modem, warning_patch, rom,
3. advance wipe cache/dalvik cache/data
4. install Magisk
5. advance wipe cache/dalvik cache/data
6. install Gapps
7. advance wipe cache/dalvik cache/data
then reboot to system, and the password is always asked on boot.
I have found out that instead of "advance wipe cache/dalvik cache/data", do a "factory reset" in twrp recovery, then the problem solved.
So the step should be
1. advance wipe cache/dalvik cache/data/system,
2. install bootloader, modem, warning_patch, rom, Gapps
3. install Magisk ( wipe cache/dalvik cache/data if fail to install, then install again)
4. factory reset.
After factory reset, boot into system and works.
There is still no sound on call problem, but fixed by toggling speakerphone on and off as you suggested.
Thanks.

That's still wrong. It works but it's unnecessary. You have to use the FORMAT DATA button instead of just advanced wipe data

Going back to stock OOS -> stock recovery?

Hello there ^^
I want to completely revert my OnePlus 5 to stock. I found some guides that could help me through this, but I have one problem/question:
Where can I download the latest Stock recovery (that works with Treble)? I've searched through some threads and although some users post download links, their posts are often quite old and thus the download also seems outdated.
Do I actually need to flash the latest version of the stock OOS recovery? Or is it sufficient to install just any version and then flash the stock OOS zip file?
Anf if I need the latest one, can someone provide me with a download link or tell me where I can find it?
Thank you so much!

Direct link to download the latest stock OnePlus 5 recovery: https://oxygenos.oneplus.net.s3.amazonaws.com/recovery.img (also available on the OnePlus 5 Software Upgrade page on the OnePlus website here)
Also, in case you need it, you can download the complete zip of any version of OxygenOS version from this post.
It worked, I'm back to stock now.
Thanks!^^
Hi
Thanks for the post Shadowstep.
The OOS zip files that is on your ports, can I just use TWRP? Or does it basically wipe out everything and does a complete install, or does it just use TWRP, and do a system/data/cache wipe and I can use nandroid restore if it doesn't work? I have been looking for just a flashable image of OOs 8.1

Yes, you can flash the complete zip via TWRP and it'll install just fine. For a clean install, I suggest you boot to TWRP, wipe all the partitions (except internal storage), including system, vendor, cache, dalvik-cache and data. Once done, flash the full OOS zip and you will have a fresh, clean install of stock OOS with encryption.

[appeal][p]z3 dual D6633 patch for running z3 roms

hi guys
i need a patch for z3 dual that would be able to run z3 single-sim roms on z3 dual in android 9 pie
can any develpoer make it for me?please
thanks
please
somebody help meeeeeee
I found some patch on old oreo Z3 thread.
Also, I read the LOS 15 thread today. You need a specific TWRP for D6633. But I can't find this file.
This patch only tested on oreo ROMs so I don't know if it will work on pie.
Anyway, there you go.
You'll need a clean flash. The steps are:
- Flash TWRP 3.3.1 (if you want to install LOS 16.0, flash the boot.img from the .zip)
- reboot to TWRP, wipe everything (system, cache, dalvik, data, internal storage. BUT if you store the ROM and gapps file on internal storage, DO NOT wipe internal storage)
- flash ROM, Gapps, reboot to TWRP
- flash this dualsim patch, reboot to system
Good luck.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that.
The TWRP 3.3.1 from the link is only work on LOS 16.0. If you flash another ROM with TWRP 3.3.1, the TWRP will break.
In other word, you must flash the correct TWRP for the ROM. Also, in the past, there is a specific TWRP for Z3 dual but the link is dead.
