Casting from Chrome to Shield TV? - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All,
I am trying to test out the chromecast features of my device, specifically from the chrome browser on my Windows 7 machine to the Shield. I have installed the chrome extension but it never finds the Shield device. According to my research, youtube.com as well as a few other sites are cast enabled however when I go to youtube.com, there is no cast icon in the player window. All devices are on the same network although on different bridged routers but this doesn't appear to be a factor since I can cast from my Note 5 from cast enabled apps with no issues regardless of which router my phone's connected to.
Has anyone had success casting from Chrome/Chrome Tabs to the Shield?
Thanks!

Seems to be working for me. Have you clicked the "Google Cast" button in the toolbar?

Ok, I figured out that it was the browser/machine I was using. I suspect it's some firewall/security software. When I tried it from another machine it worked.

[Q] Issues Casting to Nexus Player (Starz/Showtime/Sling)

I can cast most things. But Slingbox, Showtime, and Starz are having issues casting to Nexus Player.
The other Chromecasts I have in the house work perfectly fine with these 3 apps. But casting to Nexus Player doesn't work for those apps.
Anyone else having these issues?
Edit: I am using an iPhone 6
I came to post the exact same thing! Showtime and starz both don't cast to nexus player. I tried using different frequencies on wifi and used a USB to ethernet adapter on player until I finally tried the apps to my chromecast with no issues. This is a major bummer! I also noticed that when casting HBO GO voice wasn't in sync with video. Nexus Player is definitely buggy hopefully they push out a bug squashing update soon.
ok. Well at least it's not just me. I posted on google forums as well. Maybe a google employee will see it? Hopefully they know about it.
Are you on android? Don't think it's an OS thing...
I also tried it from starzplay.com to nexus player. That doesn't work either. So I think it is a problem with nexus player casting. Some bug fix is needed.
Funny I have an app that works when casting to a nexus player but not on chromecast. Seems like there is more to the googlecast protocol than I thought. I thought the implementation would be the same on all devices.
Sent from my Nexus 5
I can add casting chrome desktop doesn't work to the Nexus Player either. I get a black screen (just like with showtime app). Again works perfectly fine with chromecast. I hope this gets resolved soon. Another thing I noticed is the HDMI-CEC. I can cast things to the player and it will turn on the player but it doesn't change input if the TV is currently on like the chromecast does.
Devices I've used with same results are Nexus 5 (lollipop), 10(kit kat), and Acer Chromebook 13.
vudu showtime anytime abc all dont work properly, yet android and windows screen mirroring and windows chrome tab casting works much better, i was able to sideload hbogo, maxgo, showtimeanytime, and vudu ....which can all be used with a mouse and keyboard combo like the logitech k400 as long as you have a microusb otg to usb hub
Netflix via Chrome wasn't working for me
I had problems last night getting Netflix to load from my OS X box running Chrome. I clicked the Cast button in Netflix and I just got the spinning/loading icon. I then went to the Chrome Cast Extension, and "no devices found" showed up. When I went to Youtube, the Chrome Cast Extension showed the device.
I haven't tried restarting browser, but just wanted to see if anyone else was having similar issues.
I am also experiencing the same issue with Slingplayer on my iPhone 6. The cast icon appears within the player of the Slingplayer app, and my Nexus Player shows up as the cast device. However, when I select the Nexus Player, I just get an endless spinning/loading icon.
Also having some casting issues!
Previously had a Chromecast and everything I had worked great with it.
With the Nexus Player though, I have two apps that don't even give me the option to cast anymore (Vudu, Disney Movies Anywhere). It is like they don't "see" the Nexus Player as a cast capable device. Every other app I have works fine (Netflix, YouTube, Flixster, Twitch, Google Play Movies, etc).
So is the Googlecast part of the Nexus Player just different enough that apps written specifically for the Chromecast don't work with it or what?

The guy who developed the Videostream app pretty much said exactly what you said. They are not exactly the same. Unfortunate because I bought the Nexus Player for it's casting feature over Wifi AC and it turns out it doesn't work for the main website I want it to work for.
Solving Google Cast to Nexus Player Issue.
HI there,
Issue: the Chrome cast app in the Google Chrome browser no longer 'finds' the Nexus Player (Windows 8.1).
Fix: 1) Unistall the Chrome cast app in the browser.
2) Navigate to your AppDate file in the Windows user folder (view, shown hidden files etc.)
3) Find and delete the Chrome Cast app data.
4) Reinstall the Chrome Cast app in the browser.
Finding the app data in step 3), above can be a chore, as it will depend on your particular Chrome browser's configuration. You may need to go to other Windows or Google forums to learn how to locate the file.
Cheers.

[Q] Question about Google Cast

Hi, I received my Nexus Player two days ago and i have a problem with cast tab from Chrome for Windows PC.
Some pages cannot cast, only pages with "official" cast function. With Chromecast i can cast any page without problems
¿Where is the problem? Thanks in advance.
Note: Google Cast version 22246
Same issue - cannot cast from Chrome to Nexus Player
I have the same issue - I cannot cast from Chrome on my notebook to Nexus Player. However my notebook can cast to other Chromecast (sticks). As you said, on Chrome browser a Youtube page WILL cast to Nexus Player, but I suspect this is using the native application on the Player.
Finally, my Nexus 9 and kitcat phone can cast to the Nexus Player without issue, just not the Chrome plugin for by notebook.
Have you found any solution?

Try to reboot the device, i don't now why but solve my problem.
Possible Workaround
I think I finally figured out a workaround!
1) Install Google Cast (Beta)
2) Go to settings, option
3) Under Additional receiver IPs, add the IP from your Nexus Player.
4) IP address can be found by going to setting, clicking on your wireless network, & viewing IP address
After doing this and clicking casting too, the IP address should be listed and you should be able to cast to it!
Hope this helps everyone else having problems.

Can I pair my Windows 10 laptop with the Shield for casting video files?

It would be nice to be able to send video files from my laptop to the Shield via Google Cast. I have tried the Chrome extension of course, and it allows you to cast your whole screen but that's extremely quality-degrading for video. I want to cast actual files and nothing else.
I would have assumed there's no built-in compatibility between and Android device and a Window machine, yet when I right-click a video file in Windows Explorer there's an option to "Cast to Device" > "Android_b141". When I select Android_b141 I am asked for a WPS Pin but I've looked on the box and in the manual and there is nothing explicitly given as the WPS Pin. I've tried a few things like serial number etc but with no luck.
Does anyone know if it is possible to get this to work? I would really like to be able to just use this built-in functionality, if it exists. I have tried some third-party workarounds such as Chrome extensions which claim to be able to cast video files, but none work well if at all.
For comparison, on my Android tablet ES File Explorer allows casting of video files with no problem at all. This is the sort of functionality I am after on my laptop.
Thanks in advanced for any help or advice.

Thanks for the suggestion. But Plex is not ideal for me. I used to have a big media library indexed by XBMC (now Kodi) and I also know how smoothly Plex can stream across a network but I don't need a whole media library server-client setup atm, just the ability to cast occasional unorganised video files (not even always TV and movies, sometimes old home videos that are stored on my laptop for example, or something I just pulled off my action cam).
Immediately after making the OP I found an imperfect workaround. Strem.io for Windows allows you to drag and drop any video file and cast via just about any casting protocol. The program is a simplified (but certainly not light-weight) media centre though, so I could do with something lighter. It's made me think that perhaps there are video players out there for Windows which support casting. I'm surprised that VLC doesn't.
Can't you use a windows shared folder? Kodi can read any smb share with ease

Any way to cast video files from my Windows 10 laptop?

This method is supposed to work for Chromecast:
http://www.geeksquad.co.uk/articles/stream-windows-10-google-chromecast
Unfortunately it doesn't work for me with the Shield, has anyone else had any luck?
There are some chrome extensions for this, but they all seem to render the video in a tab and then re-encode it before transmission, resulting in horrible quality. Dragging and dropping the video files into Stremio or Popcorn Time sometimes allows me to cast them. But that is neither clean nor reliable.
Download AirPlay
If all else fails, you could try going the other way - playing videos on your Shield from a Windows share or Plex server.
I've come up with an okay solution. If I install Kodi on the Shield and enable UPnP then I can cast natively from Windows, but only if Kodi is already running. It's not 100% reliable but it's better than what I had and it doesn't require any "hacks", just an install from the Play Store.
You can cast straight out of the Chrome browser if your video will play in it.

Thanks, this works great for .mp4, unfortunately .mkv and .avi aren't supported.
Using Plex is a good option, but Chrome's cast also has an (experimental) option to cast your screen. Click the little down arrow on the top right of the cast menu.
Videostream works amazing well
