-----------PROJECT HAS BEEN ABANDON AND IS OBSOLETE----------
-----------PROJECT HAS BEEN ABANDON AND IS OBSOLETE----------
WORKS ON 5.1.1 ALSO!
(Link in next reply)
Fully automated and noob friendly. :3
Done:
Root
BusyBox
Disable OTA
Change Launcher
Install full Google Play Functionality
Autoinstall flash player
build.prop optimizations
A few more features...
This may be compatible with other fires, but I have only tested it on the Fire 7" 5th generation.
This is a script I wrote in my spare time.
This script will optimize, root, install google play, and debloat your device.
Enjoy :3 Don't forget to hit thanks.
STEPS
1. In device options, tap on serial number until the developer options appear. If required (which it is likely not, but for some it is. DON'T DO THIS IF IT'S ALREADY WORKING.) install the ADB driver by going into the device manager of windows and rightclick update driver on your device under unkown devices, then point it to the driver folder included in this zip, or, you know, try the driver installer .exe included. Make sure driver signature enforcement is disabled in Windows!
2. Go into the developer options of android and enable Debugging
3. Go to the homescreen on the tablet, EXTRACT the zip on your computer, and run the script 1_ROOT_FIRE.bat in the zip on your computer.
This should only take around five minutes too complete.
YOUR DEVICE WILL REBOOT SEVERAL TIMES.
Easy enough, right? :3
Troubleshooting:
Unless you are running Fire OS 5 or higher, using this script probably won't get you playstore access, but it may root it. This was made primarily for the Amazon Fire 5th Generation 7" Tablet. (The "50 dollar tablet")
Don't run as root or admin.
If your device gets stuck in fastboot:
When the device reboots and goes into fastboot mode the drivers didn't recognise it. Leave the script running and go into Device Manager. Your Kindle will be listed as "Fire" with a yellow icon. Follow same steps to install drivers but instead of directing it to the "usb driver" folder contained in the zip file - select "let me pick from a list of drivers". Then pick adb interface then scroll to the bottom and select the last option.
The script hangs on adb daemon started:
If it hangs there, android debugging on your device isn't communicating with your computer. The fix can range from reconnecting your device, making sure android debugging is enabled in the Device> Developer options, making sure adb drivers are installed, or restarting the script.
Keep in mind, if you give this tablet to a non tech savvy user, open SuperSU, go to options, and click full unroot.

Read the post below to choose the version right for you.

Version diffrences
Regular version: Choose this if you want the full android experience to your tablet with the added features of the script. This will remove all the unwanted Amazon bloatware that fills up the internal storage and will make your tablet feel more like an android tablet.
No debloat version: Choose this if you want to keep the Amazon experience with the added features of the script. This will leave Amazon's features and will make your tablet feel more like an Amazon tablet.
Notice: this script will not wipe or touch any of your files on the internal storage or sd card

Fully stable!
Great news! All bugs have been fixed! As of version 4.14 uploaded 1/5/16, all OS versions have been tested and are confirmed working properly. Enjoy!
If anything goes wrong, such as a USB cable being unplugged or the battery dying, pretty much anything can be fixed by booting into recovery and adb sideloading the latest firmware.bin from amazon.

I believe so [Old post. Issue fixed with 4.14, if there was one.]

I ran the script using OS X, everything seemed to go well. But the Fire is stuck booting at the "fire" logo.

Give it 10 minutes before force rebooting. It may be rewriting cache. This is very odd. Any error messages on the computer?
Don't worry about your tablet. We can adb sideload if anything wen't wrong.
What OS is your tablet running? Is your tablet the Fire 7? It may be an issue with build.prop. I'm retesting it now using the Mac OS X source files. In the mean time, tell me if your Fire boots.

It's a 5th gen Fire 7 (the one that was released in Sept 2015). I side loaded to get back to factory, but mistakenly used the fire hd .bin file...and now it won't turn on at all. Lol. Might be a dead battery though I think, so its plugged in now. Will try again after a bit.

Alright. Best of luck. I tested it on my fire again and there were no problems. If you have problems the second time tell me.

Any results?

I bricked it by installing the wrong version by mistake.
Hopefully Amazon warranty will replace it without question.

I've just run the script for my daughters fire 6 5th gen running 5.1.1 and all went smoothly. Has the look and feel of a great wee device now!
Thanks for your efforts ☺

Just installed this without a hitch. So far so good!! Thank you!!

Worked really well on 5.1.1 Thank you so much!
Now the only issue I have is that I want to use Google Now Launcher in place of Nova. Is there a way to do it?
EDIT: Never mind, it asked me which home to set after a reboot.

I was gonna suggest the same. Nova after rooting makes sense, since the widgets work. But I like Google Now on left swipe.

Yeahhh
Very good. Fire 7 2015 5.1.1.
Now I've an Android table not a garbage :good:

UK Nook Glowlight software 1.2.0 - Don't use glownooter

I got a uk glow worm on the 27th (2 days before release ) and one of the first things that I tried to do was to root with glownooter. Bad idea! I thought that I had bricked my device. I had to use a lot of trickery to recover from a loading screen lock-up and once I did the first thing that I did was backup my nook (Which i should have done before).
UPDATE!
Please try my new ROOT install pack HERE:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34216660#post34216660
This can be used to root and install the most requested things of this thread in just one zip.
Here is a quick guide to most things you will need to do to get started. I will update this guide as I discover and build new modifications.
To Backup and Restore
Follow this guide. Please do this BEFORE any other tinkering!
http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/20...-and-restore-nook-glow-and-nook-simple-touch/
Its important to check your backup before proceeding! Please listen to roustabout and dont skip this step... He knows what he's talking about
roustabout said:
I'd like to suggest an addition to the backup method that many folks are using - always test your restore, but dont test it (the first time) on your device.
Your backup file should be about 2 gig.
find a 2 gig or larger flash drive or sdcard and restore your backup image to that drive.
when you're done, there should be 8 partitions, as there were on your Nook to begin with.
If you can't get that working - you're not ready to root yet. Until you're sure you can restore, don't start making changes, please.
People turn up all the time having screwed themselves over by restoring a partial backup and not knowing it, or having restored only one partition from a complete backup and having blown out the partition table.

Thanks roustabout
To Root!
Make sure you use the CWM file suitable for your SD Card. I used "2gb_clockwork-rc2" because my card was 2gb+.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360994 (Thanks mali100)
Use WinImage with admin rights to restore CWM virtual hdd image to your SD.
Download tinynoot-1-of-2 and tinynoot-2-of-2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650593 (Thanks to eded333 and roustabout)
Put on CWM boot SD.
Install them in CWM back to back (I didn't bother with the restart in the middle as it should not make a difference considering the file content). After a restart you should have root access and an android launcher on your 1.2.0 Nook (among other files). If nook fails to boot one of the tinynoot files may have corrupted. Recover, Re-download and Retry!
To Add Apps
Using ADB to install apps is easy. Extract this to your C drive:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13673492/ADB + Fastboot + Drivers.zip
Navigate to the folder in a cmd prompt.
Drop your APK into the same folder and on your nook open the "adbwireless" app and enable ADB
That app will tell you what your nooks IP address is.
Then you can:
Code:
adb connect ip.address.of.nook:portnumber
adb install app_of_your_choice.apk
Setup ADB over USB
OK I have taken the liberty of building a quick driver mod to support your nook through USB. It works for me. First you need to have the android SDK if you don't already (sure you do but just in case ).
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Make sure you tick to install the android USB driver when the SDK is installed.
Browse to extras\google\usb_driver in your SDK folder (wherever you put it) and replace android_winusb.inf with my file:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13673492/android_winusb.inf
Next go to C:\Users\your_user_account\.android and replace adb_usb.ini with my file:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13673492/adb_usb.ini
In device manager, point google ADB driver to this and hopefully that should get you set up!
To test type
Code:
adb devices
Its working if you get something like this:
Code:
* daemon not running. starting it now on port ____ *
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached
[YOUR NOOK] device
And then try
Code:
adb install app_of_your_choice.apk
UPDATE

Install the CWM zip using your clockworkmod SD card

If this helps, be polite and say thankyou
Have you setup ADB yet? If you can connect with ADB and get a shell, you can execute a 'df' at the shell prompt to see how much free space is available in each partition. On my NST (no glowlight) apps seem to be installed in /data/app so see how much free space is there. On the NST, this appears to be the same partition that books purchased from B&N are placed in, so if you have a lot of books from B&N, you may have to archive some to install apps. Of course all this is going on the assumption that the NST Glow is similar to the NST in this regard.

Thanks for replying. I'm actually working setting up ADB now. As for books I only just got my nook so all of my titles are epub format on an sd card so i wouldn't think it would be that. As soon as I get ADB set up I will post back my results incase it helps anyone else with this new software version.
Can you look in the documentation that comes with the reader for any reference to 'third party software' or 'GPL software'. They should list where to download / apply for the source code somewhere. Once we can see the source code we can compare it against the existing versions and identify any significant issues.
I set up ADB.
Plenty of space in all partitions including /data for the apps that I want. Managed to install through "adb install some_app_i_want.apk" so problem resides with the amazon app store. Not really an issue for me because I have a specific set of apps that I want and don't need to browse the app store.
I will try to work out what's wrong for others.

No reference to GPL. Only references to third party software are to tell me that my warranty is no longer valid (no surprise there!)
Is there any other place I can find this info thats not the documentation?

Nothing obvious from the uk.nook.com website. On the US site the 'support' section links to terms of service which contain the links to the open source code (see http://www.barnesandnoble.com/container/nook_lnav.asp?pid=43307 and search for NOOK 1.1.5 OSS Release ), but I can't see an equivalent on the UK site. It's an oversight, but such things happen with a new product launch.
You can email them at [email protected] . The relevant paragraph from the US site is:
1. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in this Agreement, certain components of the Software are licensed subject to the General Public License Version 2.0, a copy of which is attached as Exhibit A (the "GPL License"). You may not use these components except in compliance with the GPL License. In addition, you may have additional rights with respect to such components under the GPL License, including, without limitation, the right to obtain the source code for such components from us. You may obtain a copy of such source code by contacting us through the contact information provided on the Web Site. We will provide such source code in accordance with the GPL License.
I don't legally have the right to request the source code myself, because I don't own a UK NOOK yet. (Yeah, thinly veiled excuse for laziness!)

You're obviously not that lazy. Thanks for looking and gathering all of the extra info I need. I'll send B&N an e-mail and see what they say. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't want to hand it out considering you can use it for an easy root setup and install the amazon and kobo stores which could financially damage their advance into new territories! What are we to do! Can't even subscribe to a newspaper or magazine through the nook store yet!
I'll let you know when / if I get a response
There is a setting in nook touch tools that you need to "arm," to allow software from unknown sources to be installed before the Amazon appstore can install software on a tinynooted device.
The setting is a tickbox, "Allow non-Market apps"
Untick it if it is ticked by default, then re-tick it to get apps to install.

Thanks for the tip on screen freeze but the link to the images on that post don't work for me. I am on 1.2 and made a backup before attempting any rooting - have managed to reinstate my original nook so quite pleased with myself.
Is there any point in rooting until someone can find a way of getting apps onto the 1.2 NSTG?

Great that you got a backup. If you want custom apps you can either wait for a different root kit or push ahead (since you have a safety net).
As I said, it worked for me.
If you don't mind searching for the .apk files you want you can use this:
Code:
adb connect ip.address.of.nook:portnumber
adb install app_of_your_choice.apk
This has worked fine for me so far. Just don't try for custom kernels yet as they seem to give me troubles.
I will work more on this tomorrow including adjusting framework for gapps.

Great - thanks to your more detailed instructions, I have persevered and the second attempt at installing the tinynoot zips worked. Your post gave me the confidence to try installing apks for the first time and for anyone else who is unfamiliar with the processes used, I found these two pages useful for:
navigating within a command prompt (how naive): pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1723&page=3
Pasting text into a command prompt (ditto): megaleecher.net/Copy_Paste_Text_Dos_Window
Sorry, as a newb I'm not trusted to post outside links yet. It took a couple of attempts of pasting and pressing enter to work out how to install using the adb code but it's not as hard as I expected.
I have tried installing the 1 Mobile Market which works but it is unable to install apps itself (not enough space).
Also, I have just installed NoRefreshToggle and can't seem to get it to work. Any thoughts - is 1.2 to blame? Really want this to work as Business Calendar Free is just a series of blinks at the moment!
Great! I'm glad you pushed onward and have root.
I am going through possibilities of other ways to install apps and mods.
No refresh is something that I would like as well but I think that the framework may need editing for 1.2.0. For fast mode a new kernel will need to be made or existing one modified.
Be aware that installing kernels not designed for this firmware can give you some serious problems.
Once I can setup app markets, I will work on these other modifications.
Stay tuned :good:
Take a look at the overclock kernel - it's got a lot of the norefresh features baked in, and gives you a nice ability to control both clock and kernel tuning (via the governor control.)
You're right, you can flash the two zips back to back with no ill effect, I was mistaken about what the second zip was doing.
I mistyped when I typed "nook touch tools," I meant nook color tools.
I'm very interested that the amazon store is not working in 1.2. I will see if the software's available for my device, so I can try to see what's happened.
As of now, the us bn site does not mention an os 1.2 for the glowlight.

[ROM/ROOT/CWM] Sero 7 Pro (US) - dopa v2.0

** DoPa5 v1.0 (AOSP v5.0.2_r1 - Lollipop) is now available for US/UK/AU users **
If you would like to upgrade from the stock ROM, see this post for downloads and installation details
Click to collapse
DoPa v2.0 is an enhanced version of the stock ROM that features a custom-built kernel. It is based on Hisense's August, 2013 update (build P756.6.02.20) and is intended for US (8gb) versions of this tablet. It does not support the 32gb models sold in the UK and Australia. See Post 2 below for packages to root this tablet and install CWM Touch recovery.
This ROM de-bloats the original, roots it using SuperSU, and adds several useful apps, among them: Apex Launcher and ES File Explorer. It also includes several Xposed Installer modules to tweak your system, including GravityBox and my Phab7 UI switcher. For the hackers amongst us, ADB always runs as root.
The kernel is built from Hisense's source and offers enhancements and bug fixes. Most notably, it provides USB-OTG support so you can connect USB storage devices (e.g. thumb-drives) to your tablet using an OTG cable. It comes in two flavors, a non-overclocked version included in the main package, and a separate overclocked version that can be installed (and uninstalled) independently.
Installation
Having CWM installed is a prerequisite; if you haven't installed it yet, see Post 2. This ROM is intended to function as an update, preserving your apps and data. Unless you want to start from scratch, do NOT wipe or clear anything - the install script will do what's needed.
copy the file(s) to your internal or external SD card
reboot into CWM, then select "install zip"
I recommend you select "toggle signature verification"; enabling this will confirm the file hasn't gotten corrupted (if you get a verification error, stop, then copy the file to a different SD card)
choose the menu entry corresponding to where you put the file(s), then select "sero7pro-bld60220-dopa-v2.0.zip" from the list
after confirming your selection, the update will display what it's doing; you should NOT see any error messages
if you'd like to install the overclocked kernel, you can do so once the main package is in place, or at some later time
reboot

when you attach a drive using the USB-OTG feature, it is automatically mounted at '/usbdisk'. Be aware there is no easy way to unmount it - you may have to use adb or a terminal app to ensure a clean unmount. This should only be an issue if you write to the disk; if you're only reading, it may be safe to just pull the plug.
the overclocked version of the kernel runs the processor at 1.5ghz rather than the standard 1.3ghz. Using it may result in a significant loss of stability on some systems. You may want to install one of the many apps that let you control the maximum speed to regain stability and reduce power consumption.
much of the app-bloat this ROM tries to eliminate (such as Sams Club or Playstore Magazines) may still be present if you've ever gotten updates for any of these apps. To get rid of them permanently, uninstall them using Settings->Apps->Downloaded. For "system" apps like the Google stuff, select "Uninstall updates", then "OK" when it asks if you want to revert to the factory-installed version (which doesn't exist anymore). The apps will be gone for good.
to enable the many tweaks offered by GravityBox and Phab7, open the Xposed Installer app and enable it via the "Framework" option but don't reboot yet. Back out and choose "Modules", then tap directly on the checkbox to the left of each module's icon (not on the icon or text). Now, reboot to activate their features.
Note: GravityBox's Quick Settings tiles and statusbar mods only work with the Phone or Phablet UIs (i.e. not Tablet UI). To get the full effect from Tablet UI, open Apex Launcher's settings and select "Homescreen settings->Use tablet UI mode"
Geek Alert: with the addition of DriveDroid (not included), this kernel lets your tablet emulate a USB CD drive that can be used to boot your PC. See the app's description for details.

Root/CWM packages
These packages will root and install CWM Touch recovery on the US (8gb) model of the Sero 7 Pro. There are separate versions for Windows and Linux. They have been tested under Win XP, Win 8, and Ubuntu, and should avoid problems encountered with other root/recovery packages.
The packages are modular so that you can run some or all of the functions as-needed. They consist of 4 scripts:
step0-DoItAll - displays some setup info then runs all 3 of the following
step1-adb - enables ADB ("Android Debug Bridge") to locate the tablet
step2-root - roots the tablet and installs the SuperSU app
step3-cwm - installs CWM Touch Recovery v6.0.3.2
Versions of ADB for each OS are included, so no other packages or downloads are needed. Usage should be fairly simple: unzip the package into a convenient directory, doubleclick on step0-DoItAll, then follow the (minimal) instructions. Alternately (and better), open a command prompt/bash shell, change to the directory where you unzipped everything, then run the script(s) from there.
Avoiding Frustration
If you haven't rooted an Android device before, please read the following because there are a few "gotcha"s. If you have but things aren't going as expected, review the following in case you missed/forgot something.
Developer options must be visible in the Settings app. If they aren't, select "About tablet", then tap on "Build number" 7 times. A small popup will tell you that you're now a developer. Back out to the list of settings categories - you should now see "Developer options".
USB debugging must be enabled under "Developer options". Please be sure it is. If it isn't, select it then tap OK when a warning popup appears.
Both Windows and Linux require extra files to be in place before ADB can communicate with your tablet. Click on the button for your OS to see the ugly details.
Windows
Windows requires USB drivers to be installed. Drivers that will work with the Sero7Pro (and possibly any Android device) are included in the package.
After enabling "USB debugging" and connecting your tablet, a wizard may pop up to guide you through the steps. If not, force it to appear by opening Device Manager. Look under "Other devices" where you should see something like "Android phone". Doubleclick on it, then select the "Install driver" button on the window that appears.
When the wizard pops up, tell it you'll select the drivers, then choose the option that tells it where to look. Click the "Browse" button and navigate to the directory where you unzipped the package. Select the usb_driver folder, press "OK", then "Next" - the drivers should install without any problems.
Notes: On Windows XP, the first wizard to pop up may want to install drivers for "MTP" which XP doesn't support. If so, cancel out of that, then wait for the "Andoid Phone" wizard to appear. On later versions of Windows, you may get a popup warning that the drivers aren't signed properly; if so, select "Install driver anyway". On Win 8-64bit, driver installation will fail unless you started the current session with "Driver signature enforcement" disabled.
Linux
Linux (or at least Ubuntu) doesn't allow user programs to access USB devices directly without the appropriate permissions in place. This package includes a file named 99-android.rules which provides those permissions
If you've never provided access to other USB devices, just copy the file to /etc/udev/rules.d. Otherwise, you can either copy it or merge its contents with the .rules file containing your other USB entries.
Note: both the rules.d directory and its contents are owned by root. You will probably have to use the sudo command to gain access. For example, from a bash shell whose current directory is the one where you unzipped the package, you'd enter "sudo cp 99-android.rules /etc/udev/rules.d". Also, be sure the file's permissions match the others in that directory. If not, run "chmod 644 /etc/udev/rules.d/99-android.rules".
Notes
When you're done, open the SuperSU app to enable it. It will ask to update the su binary. After selecting OK, the app will be enabled and will popup warnings whenever an app requests root access for the first time.
The Linux script is actually designed for both Linux and Mac OS X. However, I haven't fully tested it yet so I don't want to make any incorrect claims of support. You may have to correct some file permissions and will almost certainly have to run it from the Terminal app.

[Obsolete] Remove Screenshot Button / Add Instant UI Switcher
The mod originally described in this posting is now obsolete with the release of the DoPa v2.0 ROM which has both features built in.
If you are running an older version of that ROM, or XBoxExpert's ROM, or even the stock ROM, you can still remove the screenshot button using this CWM-installable package: sero7pro-sysui-dopa-v1.1.zip.
If you'd like to try Phab7, an on-the-fly UI switcher that lets you select Phone, Phablet, or Tablet UI modes, see this thread. Note: you must install the SystemUI mod to switch to Phone UI - without it, SystemUI will force-close when you do.
Good work. Hope to see more devs and more Roms
Really good. I'm using it right now. Keep going with the good work
Good Job! Looking forward to more posts!
Thanks for the nice work and good instructions. I'm using your stock ((build P756.6.02.20) rooted now and plan to try the ROM soon without Link2SD operational to keep all my apps.
Thanks again, I have updated my Sero to this ROM. Everything seems to be working perfectly. I look forward to many updates!
Thank you. Your ROM runs smooth and fast.
Great work man, downloading it now! Thanks!
Antutu result for this ROM
12979 is my antutu result for this ROM while my previous stock ROM result was 11948 while 12339 was result of XE ROM. Thank you!
Installed and working. Thanks.

I'm getting 13861 on this ROM, 11249 on the previous XE ROM.
Ran it twice, results were very close. I did leave all the 'tweeks' in from Xbox's post, not sure if that makes any difference.

Why am I getting 10500 on this ROM then?

Did you run it with the raw system? What I mean, is did you run it after the ROM settled out and after a few reboots or did you flash and then run the benchmark? It is probably over kill but I like to let the ROM sit for awhile and then do a couple of reboots before I run bench marks. My first score was very close to larryf's score (13,800) the first time I ran it, but after I added live wallpaper, Nova launcher, Xposed, etc. my last score was 11395. I assume any benchmark program would shutdown all non essential programs before running but that may not be the case.
EDIT: Wow, I rebooted right after I type this and ran AnTuTu again and it scored 14,425.

It may have something to do with my minimal approach to this tablet. I bought this tablet to use in the car. After setting up Nova Launcher, I'm pretty much down to two addition; ODB2 and CoPolit.

Root 4.4.2 HP Slate 7 Extreme

Update5/19/2015 : Kingroot Apk worked on my 4400US model with latest Android 4.4.2
Direct download link:
http://mmgr.myapp.com/myapp/Kingroo...oot-4.0.0.233-release-201505071219_105001.apk
---------------------------------------------
The steps below work on Windows 7 (Not sure if will work on Windows 8.. If so let's us know) Make sure you have Administrator Rights to install software and run executable programs etc.
The HP Slate 7 Extreme has a few different models; mine is the 4400us and I am rooted with the steps in this guide, if you have the 4400us this guide should work for you. If you have a different model it may or may not work (one person couldn't Root their 4407ra). If you could let us know either way that might help others.
It is always a good idea to remove any android software from your PC before using that PC to minimize software conflicts {with the exception of Android Debugging Bridge ( ADB )... It might aid in windows finding device drivers (see link below in steps if needed)}
Make sure you have done BOTH system Updates on you Tablet! From 4.2 to 4.3..... Then from 4.3 to 4.4.2!
(System updates can be found in Settings/About Tablet)
Make sure USB Debugging is enabled on your HP Slate 7 Extreme... (This is very important)
(to do so you will need to Enable THE HIDDEN "Developer options”...
Go to Settings/About Tablet then start tapping on the " Build number" line! (No I'm not kidding)
After a few taps you will see on screen messages counting down how many more taps needed to be a Developer... Just keep tapping till done.
Then go back to Settings Menu... Scroll down to bottom and you will see "{} Developer options” open it and enable "USB debugging" by checking the box.)
Turn on install from "Unknown Sources"
(Found in: Setting/Security)
Also.. disable any lock screen that requires pin, password, Face Unlock, or pattern
I turned my screen timeout to 30 min so it doesn't sleep etc
NOW LETS ROOT .....
Download Moborobo http://www.moborobo.com/
Download Shuame's ROOT Genius http://www.shuame.com/en/root/
Install Moborobo & Run Program
Plug Tablet into PC with it's factory USB cable
Your Windows PC should start looking for and downloading drivers (look down in Windows notification area by clock..click on the icon that is searching for drivers so you can see when finished
...don't worry if one of them says failed)..
just let Moborobo find and install needed drivers etc
note: you will see something you need to authorize on Tablet screen.. so do so!!!!
Now look in notification pull down panel and you should see that Moborobo installed an app on your Tablet... Click to open once then just hit the home button once on Tablet.
[Might help to watch fist 1 minute & 37 seconds of this video only!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5SsjnmV7J4 It a Guide for rooting a different Tablet... But it will show you how to use Moborobo.
...(DO NOT use the older Shuame root tool shown in the rest of YouTube Video!!!!!!!!!)]
[...if still not working (and you have authorized the security popup on Tablet screen mentioned above).. head over to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790 and install the minimal adb client on Windows 7 and try process again]
Once your ready to move on.. ( Meaning: Moborobo sees your Tablet..) NOW run ROOT Genius (just Minimize Moborobo)
Root Genius will do it's thing (your Tablet Will Reboot during Process)
Profit (you are Rooted)
Use "ROOT Checker Basic" free in Play Store to ensure you are Rooted!
Note: Root Genius installs a super user app called "Kinguser" during the root process.. (which is also an app backup tool and has tool to disable apps from automaticly starting).
Per Jupiter683:
"If anyone has the Beats Audio Edition and they want to root, Towelroot works like a charm!"
Hit Thanks if I helped!
Screenshot 1
Used "Root Checker Basic" app to confirm Root Access granted.
Screenshot 2
Used "Xposed Installer" with Kit Kat Gravitybox module to tweak quick settings tiles...
Screenshot 3
This is the Super User app Kinguser that is installed during the Root process.
Please Note: that as of the date of this post.. there is NOT a custom Recovery for this Device. Do Not use any Recovery from other Devices like the Tegra Note 7 (you will brick your device). So that means don't use apps like Flashify etc.
We only have Root at this time using the methods in opening post. If you know of other Root methods please share info... I will add it to opening post.
Failed the process 86%
Hey there, I have did all process how you have explained... But always failed in 86%.... Do you know what can be the problem? Thanks a lot...

What Windows OS are you using? I used Win 7 to root.
I just rooted a 2nd Slate 7 Extreme.. got the wife one as well... And all worked well.
I have made Opening Post easier to read... And added troubleshooting steps throughout the guide to aid during Rooting Process.
Root .. failed
I couldn't get it to work either, goes through a lot of reboots and the says :
"Such a tough phone!"
Root ...failed"
Maybe it works on a partciular region of Slate 7 Extreme ? I'm in New Zealand (probably same tablet as Australia)

Another thought.. Did you enable the "Install from Unknown Sources".. reason I ask is because thought out the process of rooting.. it needs to install a couple apps on your Tablet (which you can remove after rooting)?
Hello! Just wondering, will this work on a 4.3 Slate 7 Extreme?

Yes.. should work fine for 4.3... however...I would update to 4.4 before rooting.. if you can... so you don't have to go through process again to move to 4.4 later.
Great! Just tried your method and .........It worked like a charm! Just one last question; is it possible to install a recovery mode of some kind? Ideally, I'd like to make a nandroid backup.

[Root] Phoenix OS x86/x64 v2.0.7 (13 June) Rooted Images

Hey guys, a new version of Phoenix OS (v2.0.7) is out and I have created rooted images for you guys to use.
Instructions:
Download the correct system rooted.7z file provided in the Download section and extract it
Install Phoenix OS and restart your computer.
Boot into Phoenix OS and finish the system initialization wizard. Restart the computer and boot into your main OS.
Go to C:\Phoenix OS (or wherever your Phoenix OS installation is) and replace the system.img file that's already there with the one you just downloaded
Reboot your computer now and boot into Phoenix OS.
Install the latest version of SuperSU. Sign in to Play Store using your Google account and update SuperSU that way. If you for some reason cannot use the Play Store, you can find SuperSU on the official thread. Download the flashable zip, extract Superuser.apk from the common folder, and install it in Phoenix OS by opening the .apk file with the default file manager that comes with the OS.
Update the binary by choosing Normal and your Phoenix OS should now be fully rooted

I tried opening G+ on the v2.0.6 and got the same error as you. Perhaps you can use the browser to browse G+ for now until a solution is available? Also, look into spoofing your deice model into a model of an actual tablet. Maybe that will work if you edit the build.prop file.
If anyone get's "grub minimal bash like line editing issue" when trying to boot
Hi I just tried phoenix OS. yesterday on my unbranded baytrail tablet (ub15ms10) I was stuck with this issue for a while and I finally came up with the fix using the grub prompt! (I used "rufus" to create the boot usb drive)
First, list your drives with ls ls Mine came up with hd0 and some others, but since I was booting from a usb drive, that's all that matters at the moment. hd0 will be the drive that you need so set it as the target and below is basically what you need to type to try it out without installing.
set root=(hd0,1)
linux /kernel root=/dev/ram0
initrd /initrd.img
boot
You should then be able to boot Pheonix OS 2.0.7 32bit. I did not try the 64bit version since there's no point because tablet has less then 4GB of RAM. What works: It makes good use of the tablet's GPU, it didn't lag in anyway for games such as clash royal. Browsing is good, playstore works..The performance is nice, It runs well on a 2GB ram tablet with a 1.3Ghz Intel Atom Z3735F. GPS works, bluetooth works.
What doesn't work: No audio, no brightness control. I didn't bother testing anything else since I lost interest as soon as audio didn't work. I'd probably be able to fix it myself by messing around with the kernel parameters but it's a PITA.

For the audio and other issues for baytrail/cherrytrail devices, someone made a kernel that apparently fixes these issues in debian/ubuntu which can be found here: https://yadi.sk/d/pW1Fbl-VyVPoR/Linux 4.12/Linux 4.12rc5. If someone else could use these kernels sources to apply a patch for android x86 that would be awesome.

What version of Phoenix OS do you have installed? If you have v2.0.7, you're in the right thread, so go ahead and download either a 32 or 64-bit version of the rooted image and replace it with your current system.img.
This will work on a Nexus 9 or it only works in pc's?
when i update su binary like you say it says to me installation failed
edit: ifound soulition its to update super su to the latest version with play store or aptoide or arc market or app vn and the install the binary data its soooo easyyyyyyy
Waiting for rooted system.img for Phoenix OS 2.1.0
SU Binary busy?
So I followed the instructions (although the step 6 is kind of confusing, English is not my native language so...) booted with the rooted sys image, installed superSU from the Play Store and when I open it it says "SU binary busy" and send me to a FAQ where it says that
"The SU files are already occupied by other software, such as Kingroot."
So I need to install the binary somehow? or something went wrong?
Oh BTW, used Root checker and it says it's not propely installed
Thanks for the image, buddy

I also ran into this problem using the newest version from the play store, I could avoid this though by installing version 2.79 through an apk.
But now it won't let me update the binary, since everytime I select "Normal" the installation fails after a minute or so.
Any ideas?
Guys, when to expect a rooted image for V 2.1.0 x86
thank you, but i bit confused about when i update the os,
so when i update the os, the rooted image will gone ? and i need to wait for another rooted image ?

Customizing the Fire TV Stick 4K (mantis) - Debloat - Replace launcher and Testing

EDIT (12/08/22): Parts of this guide may be out of date, it hasn't been updated since December 2019.
TL; DR Version in the second post, it's also a short overall summary. Might be best to have a look so you don't get overwhelmed by this first post.
Just thought I would share my experience with the 4K. Just as an FYI this is my first firestick and I've only had it for about a week but I've been playing with it quite a bit.
Personally I'm interested in removing all amazon related products/apps/services etc. With the exception of the store as I would like to get some of my apps through it.
Making it as lean and fast as possible.
Getting as close to AndroidTV as possible without losing any functionally and keeping stability.
I'm primarily interested in Plex and/or Kodi (with no addon apps, just vanilla kodi).
Having root. I like to have the ability to do anything, and I personally found rooting the stick easy so I found no reason not to do it. With that in mind everything I did I had root. I have no idea if any of these steps work without root.
Pre info
I chose to not flash the Prerooted Stock Image due to the comment Sus_i made here. I updated, then rooted.
EDIT (12/08/22): Updating before rooting is no longer recommended.
Step1
Plug it in, run through the setup and let it update. Go to settings -> My Fire TV -> Developer Options and enable ADB Debugging and Apps from Unknown Sources.
Step 2
Root it!
Guide here
This guide/post was helpful also. There is a good video of them opening up the firestick to access the necessary point to short/ground to allow the root script to work. Just be careful with what you use. I just used a small copper wire.
After getting root. Put it back in the case. and plug it in to your tv.
Step 3
Running commands with adb
Get and install adblink, link here
Information on how to use it is on the site. You will need to get the IP address of the firestick. Go to setting -> device -> network -> about
open adblink
click adb shell
type
Code:
reboot recovery
then enter
You'll now be in TWRP
Step 4
Install Magisk
Get the latest stable magisk zip from here
No need for the Magisk Manager apk, that will get installed with the above zip.
Put the zip in the same folder that the adblink.exe is in. (you can find that by clicking adb shell in adb link and then typing exit, then enter. It will show you where you should put the zip file)
Open adblink if you closed it (just leave it open)
click adb shell
which should show the bellow on screen
Code:
mantis:/$
type exit
then paste the following (replace the "Magisk-v20.1.zip" with the correct name of the magisk zip you downloaded)
Code:
adb push Magisk-v20.1.zip /sdcard/
then type
Code:
adb shell
echo "--update_package=/sdcard/Magisk-v20.1.zip" > /cache/recovery/command
echo "--wipe_cache" >> /cache/recovery/command
reboot recovery
It will reboot and install magisk, then reboot to the launcher.
You can now check if you like if magisk is installed correctly and if you have root (you should)
Step 5
Install [Magisk][Module] FireTV 4K Stick Add-Ons
This gets rid of the amazon launcher and does a few other things, including installing xposed framework.
Follow the instructions in that thread. But here's some additional info. Which is just a copy of how we installed magisk.
Download and put the zip in the same folder that the adblink.exe is in.
Open adblink if you closed it (just leave it open)
click adb shell
which should show the bellow on screen
Code:
mantis:/$
type exit
then paste the following (replace the "AFTV-MM-1.9.zip" with the correct name of the AFTV-MM .zip you downloaded)
Code:
adb push AFTV-MM-1.9.zipp /sdcard/
then type
Code:
adb shell
echo "--update_package=/sdcard/AFTV-MM-1.9.zip" > /cache/recovery/command
echo "--wipe_cache" >> /cache/recovery/command
reboot recovery
It will reboot and install AFTV-MM, then reboot to the launcher. It does some things automatically on first boot and may reboot on it's own just let it do it's thing. Some additional commands need to be run via ADB, go to the thread and follow the instructions there: [Magisk][Module] FireTV 4K Stick Add-Ons
Step 6
Remove amazon bloat. *More info below*
Now I've seen a few lists here and there and tried to guess which things to disable on my own until I found these scripts.
Now these scripts weren't made for the 4k (mantis) firestick as you can see from the compatibility list. But I assumed the packages installed would be close so I'm guessing this isn't a bad starting point. But just remember this clearly wasn't meant for this device.
Download the script from here All credit for the original script goes to esc0rtd3w.
and put it in your adblink folder.
Open adblink if you closed it (just leave it open)
click adb shell
which should show the bellow on screen
Code:
mantis:/$
type exit
Code:
adb push bloat-disable.sh /sdcard/
then type
Code:
adb shell
su
cp /sdcard/bloat-disable.sh /data/local/tmp/
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/bloat-disable.sh
sh /data/local/tmp/bloat-disable.sh
The script will then disable all the bloat. If you would like to enable all the bloat then use this script, download it and follow the same instruction from above. If you just need to enable a single app/service then you can run:
Code:
adb shell
su
pm enable com.amazon.dcp
replacing "com.amazon.dcp" with the app you want to enable.
Step 7
If you want Kodi as the launcher
You can get a modified apk here The thread where this came from originally is here Discussion of an update here
Side load the apk with adblink. Should be self explanatory, click install apk. Once installed open LauncherHijack and select Kodi as the launcher.
Step 8
Setting Kodi (or any other launcher) as the launcher
Install Launcher Hijack (Clone Mod), get the apk here
Follow the instructions here to install it and get it working. By now you should be getting comfortable with abdlink, use it to install the apks and run the adb shell commands.
Other apps to install
Smart Youtube TV (no ads)
OpenVPN install if you want or need it. In my case I need to slightly deviate from the guide. I simply didn't need to create the login.conf file. I Just copied opvn config over and then in settings chose "Certificates" for type and insert the password in "private key password".
That's it for now. I'm curious what other modifications can be done on the 4K (mantis). I'm thinking about/planning on trying a few I've seen around. I think as long as I can get back to TWRP then worse case I should be able to flash the stock ROM to recover. Would be interested to hear what other people may have pulled off.
*Step 6 more info*
This script will remove all packages that esc0rtd3w deemed safe to remove as of Fire OS 5.2.7.2 on the FireStick2. It will leave the amazon launcher enabled and allow use of the amazon app store. The amazon app store can also be disabled but disabling the amazon launcher breaks access to the settings.
My slightly edited version of his script
esc0rtd3w firestick-loader github. All credit for the script goes to him.
List of services/packages that are new for Fire OS 6.2.6.8
If anyone can inform me of the packages/services that can be safely disabled, please let me know and I can include them in the script. For now they are left untouched/enabled.

Things that don't work or I'm interested in trying to get working.
-Can't "install" apps from amazon. The app store is there and can install from "the cloud" but can't search for new apps. Likely due to something being disabled., just not sure what. I assume installing from amazon web into the cloud or something like that could be a work around. Might be that the only way to search for apps is with the default launcher?
-Voice search doesn't work. Looks like some people have kind of gotten it to work but I have not.
-Chromecast support.
Both would likely have a better chance if google play services/store could be installed. I see there was some effort put forth in trying to do that on previous firetvstick models so I may try some of the info that is out there. Seeing as we now have root its a lot more possible.....I assume.

I keep meaning to test nanodroid with microg & the patched play store. I've not done it yet as I was afraid patching the system would screw everything up & I had so much difficulty getting bootloader patched to begin with. It may not be necessary to patch system, I recall using an xposed module for spoofing some time ago on an old phone so that could be a possibility.
It might not work, but there's probably less that can go wrong as there's less "deep" system integration than using official gapps. Just an idea if you fancy trying it.
Booting between FireOS and TWRP
Below are the first steps in rooting the firestick 4k:
Once it reboot’s into TWRP do you now have root privs?
Can you stop here and not install a “pre-rooted image”?
Can I now boot between FireOS and TWRP if so How?
Thank You,
1.Boot the ISO
2.Download and extract the exploit package.
3.Open a terminal in the kamakiri directory
Run
Code:
4. ./bootrom-step.sh
Short one of the points in the attached photo to ground (the cage of the shielding).
Ideally you want to use DAT0, since that is tiny it might be easier to short the point marked CLK instead.
It is very important that you use a piece of soft wire or aluminum foil or something similar for shorting. Don't use tweezers as that makes it incredibly easy to knock of the capacitor off the PCB and kill the board!
5. Connect the stick to your computer (while keeping it shorted)Both USB and HDMI ???
6. The script should tell you to release the short and hit enter
Once finished run
Code:
7. ./fastboot-step.sh
Your device will now reboot into TWRP

Hi,
Inline with great answers is just fine, thank you.
I will investigate magisk, I didn't realize that's what it is for.
And "reboot recovery" at the adb command line will put me back in TWRP mode - This was great info!!
I ordered a new firestick to try this on, it will be here next week so I have some time to read up.
Thanks again,
Steve
More questions if you can please

When you short to ground and then plug into usb to boot firestick is that considered bootloader mode?
At what point is the greatest risk of bricking the firestick?
Thanks,
Steve

I guess that would probably be technically correct.
Only time there's a chance of bricking, usually for flash anything, is during the writing process. Or a corrupt file.
I've done a hand full and haven't had any issues. Just take normal precautions like do what you can to prevent a power outage during the flash and once it's plugged in and flashing don't touch anything till its finished.
Personally I plugged in the mirco USB into the firestick first, then lined up the USB into the computer but didn't push it in. Held a small solid copper wire against the rf shield (the metal that surrounds the chip) and touched the side of what I think is a capacitor (you can't get to clk without taking the surrounding metal piece off). It's the "other" point they mention you can use. While doing that with one hand I plug in the USB to the computer. Remember the script has to be run first, waiting to see the stick before you plug it in.
If you miss time it or don't make the connection, the script just won't tell you to remove the short and press enter, so you'll just have to try again.

I haven't no. I might have missed that one. I've been pretty happy the the end result of using his module in this thread. And after updating to the latest version, voice search is working for me.
I have some other projects at the moment so I'm not working on this but I'll come back to later on.

When you say voice search is working, does that mean you can click the little mic icon at the top left of the Android TV launcher and it will search? Does it work well? Thanks

Yeah you have to click the mic on screen then the mic on the remote. Seems to work pretty well but haven't used it much more then just to see if it worked.

This module is great. It also disables Amazon firmware updates. There are a bunch of other tips in that thread too.
Thanks for the tips and tricks!
When trying to run the disable script I get i get an error at the last command. /data/local/tmp/bloat-disable.sh[7]: syntax error: 'newline' unexpected. When running command " sh /data/local/tmp/bloat-disable.sh "
Can you create a bloat-disable script dedicated to fire stick 4k (mantis) ? that would be beneficial for everyone.
