GPS craps out after 5 minutes of activity - think it may be a rogue app - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm rooted on 6.0.1 and in the past few weeks I've noticed that while using Google Maps Navigation, the GPS cursor will freeze in location and not update even though I've physically moved far far away. It's been a pretty frustrating problem as I haven't been able to find a smoking gun just yet.
It seems to occur 4-5 minutes after I start navigation. Not sure if it's tied to navigation or there's something else that's occurring in the background that's causing the issue. I downloaded (and bought the pro version) of GPS Status Toolbox to see what was happening. When the error occurs, I lose GPS signal and it will take anywhere from 4-12 minutes to get the next GPS lock (which doesn't stick). It effectively breaks all apps that would use the GPS.
Here's a screenshot of the GPS Status Toolbox with 20 satellites acquired but still no fix on position - and this is after it's been trying to find a position for several minutes.

I've tried clearing the cache with no improvement. I've tried deleting the google maps app data which allowed it to work again for a few minutes before freezing up again.
I've looked at the app permissions for location but nothing has jumped out at me as something that would create an issue.
I thought maybe there was some hardware interference in my car but my girlfriend's S5's GPS works perfectly while mine is floundering.
Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this? I tried booting into safe mode and the GPS seemed to work fine for the 10 minutes I was using it. Also I had used it for a month prior (before the 6.0.1 update) and the GPS worked just fine - so I don't think it's a hardware issue.

Stand-alone GPS status display?

OK, now I know that the GPS is software driven - i.e. you cannot manually turn it on or off. However, is there a package that will activate the GPS on the phone, and show a status display of the satellite constellation and how well or poorly the receiver is picking them up?
I'd grab SiRFtech, but the phone uses the Qualcom chipset, not the SiRF III chipset

there are tons of gps utils... for fast switching gps on and get fix search for the small prog "GPS test" i´m running version 1.04 don´t know if thats the latest
apps
well, even if it is from SirfTech, all GPSs support the NMEA protocol. if the app you showed also supports NMEA, then this is fine.
I normally use CruxView (attached), which is also quite simple, has some nice functions (+a dedicated SiRF section, which I'm not touching )
/edit: I guess your app supports NMEA - at least I see it listed in the menubar!
Thanks folks Much appreciated Should make figuring out what's wrong with the GPS on my TP2 a little easier - takes forever to get a lock, and even then bounces in and out like a chicken on a bungee rope on acid - and it only started doing that this week, three weeks after obtaining the phone, no less!
gps is a miracle
never got it to work right...never more than 3 sats outside on both kaiser and rhodium, inside no chance!
a week ago i installed gps test and navigon and i got best gps, fast fix and can navigate through my house!

Tab has crashed.

When I use the stock internet browser, I continuously get this THIS TAB HAS CRASHED error, which I refresh and it works fine. Its becoming annoying because it happens 10-20 times a day. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!
Phone Info:
I have a Galaxy S5 from Cricket (AT&T-USA MVNO).
Samsung-SM-G900AZ
Android 4.4.2
Baseband G900AZTUU1ANE7
The stock browser is a weird piece of software. It doesn't even have a name (just says "Internet"), no version number., doesn't say who made it (Google, Samsung or 3rd party?), doesn't have a privacy policy. But I use it because its fast and works the way a browser should. The phone is only 4 days old. Not rooted. I am pretty sure this is some sort of bug Google has placed in Android to push people to use Chrome browser instead just like Samsung is pushing people to use Samsung cloud services for Contacts, but without getting in the middle of their tug of war, I'd like to be able to use my phone properly. :good:
Anyone else having this issue? Its frustrating because it is happening 20 times a day already. When I refresh it works fine. So why doesn't the dumb app just try to refresh without my intervention?

Have you tried to clear data of it?
Yes just did and it keeps happening, a lot!

Did you ever find a solution to this issue is is doing my nut in. Sometimes it crashes and I have to reload the tab maybe 7 or 8 times before it works as if no issues. I have a feeling it might be flash related but can't find a fix.

Camera failed

Has anyone faced message camera failed? ??

Remove the battery while phone is running and restart. Hopefully that will fix it. Otherwise you may have to do a factory reset. Or, your phone is damaged.
After restart everything works as it should

I've had the same issues with my Note 4. I searched a lot online trying to find an answer.
If it was a hardware problem, I think you would see WAY more people having an issue. Plus I tried one persons attempt and it worked for me.
I removed Tesla Flashlight app and rebooted (not factory reset). Once the phone turned back on, the camera worked fine. I've heard from others to remove any flashlight type app and it fixes it.
Again if it was a hardware problem, I don't see how removing certain apps would fix it. It could be a hardware/software issue.
My problem now is that I use my flashlight a lot and if I can't have a flash light on my phone, I consider it a major FAIL for Samsung. Such a shame because I've been such a supporter for so many years.
This problem occurs because your flashlight app could be locking out your camera hardware in order for it to use the flash. This behavior maybe different for other flashlight app so try switching to other app.
Oddly for my model of Note 4 I don't need to download a flashlight app since there's already a built in widget in there plus it can function even when I use the camera. Try looking for it in the widgets menu it's name is torch with a green icon.

GPS not working

Hi folks,
I somehow (honestly don't know how) messed my GPS connection. I've been using Unofficial LineageOS (https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...m-cyanogenmod-14-1-unofficial-galaxy-t3489779), and just updated it from time to time.
Today, I found out, that GPS wasn't working. GPS status app says 0/24 (0/18, 0/22 ... this varies) in use. So it sees some satellites but can't lock. It locks randomly once per 20 to 30 attempts, but drops it immideately.
I tried to flash recommended Bootloader/Modem from site posted above.
I tried to switch to stock, hoping, it will install stock modem. But the bug is still there.
Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you in advance.
Good news, I tried aluminium trick described here: http://www.instructables.com/id/Galaxy-S4-GPS-repair/
And now GPS seems to work properly.

So, my first excitement about GPS working was a bit premature.
I now have a lot of satellites visible, but SOMETIMES it takes ages to fix and sometimes it's quite fast.
Strange is, that sometimes, when GPS is locked and I quit apps using it so it unlocks, a second later, when I try to fix again it isn't even possible. A lot of satellites visible, but none locked.
Could anybody suggest why and what to do?
If it was hardware, I guess it would either don't work an the time or work all the time. Not just randomly, like it is.
Or am I wrong?
Thank you!
P. S. Screenshots attached showing status of satellites when not locked - signal I guess is sufficient.

Sunrise/Sunset complication doesn't work

I have two AW2.0 watches: the ZTE Quartz and Emporio Armani Connected. When I'm adding complications to a watchface, I can choose Clock > Sunrise and sunset. Once set, this complication will show a "no location" symbol with a couple "--" dashes.
Using the Quartz that has onboard GPS, I've tried having every location setting at maximum (watch GPS/wifi/celluar on, phone GPS/wifi/celluar on, location set to high accuracy). I've also tried using the Quartz independent from my phone, with the watch GPS/wifi/celluar on. I can be standing outdoors for 30 minutes with a clear view of the sky and this sunrise/sunset complication still won't work. Other watch features that access your location work fine, like Google Maps.
Is anyone else experiencing the same issue? I'm using a Huawei Honor Note 8 phone.
Same issue - solution?
Hey, did you ever figure this one out? I happen to be experiencing the same problem.
Same issue here for the Fossil Gen5 Carlyle but I saw in a mobovi forum someone said putting the watch into Essential Mode (Time Only) then powering back into normal fixed the issue. Just tried that and it did work for me. They also stated that they thought the last update fixed the issue so perhaps the Gen 5 will get that soon..
