Cyanogenmod - Bottom mic not working on any version? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, recently just picked up an S4 from a friend after my HTC One battery kicked it. I have a random problem with the phone that I'm hoping someone here can help with.
When using a stock or TouchWiz ROM, I have zero problems with both the top and bottom microphones. I can speak to people in calls or record voice using apps and it's loud and clear. When I install a Cyanogenmod of any version (I have tried 10, 11, 12, 12.1, and 13) the bottom mic drops it and becomes very muffled to the point where you can't hear anything on the other end or in a recording. Speaking in to the top mic works perfectly though. Bluetooth works fine too and I have no issue speaking to or using A2DP with it.
Has anyone seen this before, and if so, has anyone fixed this? I'd much rather use a Cyanogenmod ROM instead of TouchWiz but at the moment it seems I have no choice ...

Try other roms. CM based or AOSP roms.

I've tried a few other CM roms, I'll find an AOSP rom and give it a go now!
EDIT: Just tried two AOSP roms, same deal. Top mic is loud, bottom mic is quiet ... No good!

I'm running CM13 without issues.

Try this one and see if the issue exists.

Try a rom that has alucard kernel (either flash optimized cm12.1 or jdc team aosp) and go into stweaks and in the sound tab change the microphone gain sliders.

Tried CM13, same issue carries on.
I now have CM12.1 with Alucard kernel and STweaks. I've turned the Camera Mic Gain up to 60 and people can hear me now, but they say it sounds slightly quiet still. Is there anyway to go past the max setting in the STweaks?

Not that I know of.

Are you sure you don't got dust in the two holes? Sound to me you have to clean the two holes.

Nope, I had the phone apart and cleaned both holes, no difference.
The confusing part is that on a TouchWiz ROM the microphones work as they should. It's not until I'm running CM or AOSP that I get this problem.
It's almost as if the microphones have been switched and the top becomes the voice mic and the bottom becomes the noise cancelling one.

I've lost count of how many times I've pointed out this problem. No, changing gain value will not solve the problem. This has been a truly dealbreaker for me, as this affects every cm based rom. @AntaresOne said that this problem comes from using caf drivers and I think it cannot be fixed unless Samsung releases its own source codes.

It's strange because on my I9505 I never experienced this problem.
What bootloader and modem are you running?

They are all in the same boat. To solve all problems you have to stay with TouchWiz ROMs

It's not that hard to believe, seeing as there are over 40 different S4 models. You just can't make a rom to work perfectly on all.
I never had any major problems with any of the roms I flashed, yet other people seemed to have serious issues with the same rom.
I don't know why Samsung can't make just one model. It splits the user base, it gives them more headaches because of updates and such.

Yes, I agree on that. It's crazy to make that many models. I made the assumption that he has an i9505 but maybe he has a different model.

Try to record a voice message with Whatsapp using TW/GE rom and then with CM/AOSP rom, you will clearly hear the difference. jfltexx here.

Yes, I've tried AOSP roms but no differences. AOSP based roms for S4 share some sources with CM.

Bootloader/baseband is I9505XXUGNG2
Going to try updating to the latest baseband soon and see if that has any effect.
Pain in the ass but see how we go!

CM7 Nightly music quality - SOLVED! see post#5 (not CM7 related)

Hey guys. Im running the 02/23/12 nightly.
I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing lower-than-par headset quality. I'm very particular with my music, and i listen to a lot of the same songs repeatedly, so i know exactly how they are supposed to sound.
Forgive me, I'm not too keen on audio lingo, so its difficult for me to describe what I'm experiencing: sometimes it sounds like the volume is fluctuating. One may even say that it sounds like my phone is having a difficult time when there is heavy bass and heavy treble at the same time.
Regardless of my ****ty explanation, has anyone else noticed a difference in audio quality since using the new nightlies?

ive tried glitch, streamline, and default nightly kernel....problem persists, regards of the kernel and whether or not im using voodoo sound

Have you tried the beats audio mod? found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525226
Are you shure it's CM7 not 9? I thought that there are no more updates for cm7.

Definitely cm7, nightly support started back up about a month ago or so
What does that mod do? I'm not looking for anything fancy, i just want it to sound the way it should...like it used to when i was on the old CM7, and on froyo

I have noticed the past few updates Supercurio has put out that they have made the sound almost "wavy " if that makes sense. I just reverted back two builds ago and all is back to normal. Think he is recoding Voodoo app to integrate free and plus into one app and something isn't gellin too good. I know exactly what you are talking about and it is hard to pit it into words. Pretty sure it isn't exclusive to CM.

would you be so kind as to PM me the apk of the voodoo version you are using??
Of course my friend. PM sent
You're a bloody genius, the revert version you sent me resolved the issue. "wavy" - HA! that was a PERFECT way to describe what i was experiencing, and it was ruining my life. thank you for bringing meaning back to my exisistence.
my wife was telling me it was probably all in my psycho head...WOMEN!!
(i mustve casually, and coincidentally, updated voodoo shortly before/after switching to the new nightlies, which is prob the reason i was led to believe it was a ROM issue)

Extremely low microphone volume during calls

Callers at the other end have difficulty hearing me, and I've never been able to find a solution. At first, I thought it's the ROM I was using, but after flashing the stock rooted ROM, same problem. I'm using the correct baseband. I'll do a test tomorrow, returning the phone to factory condition with the latest images from Google.
Has anybody gotten this problem and was able to fix it?
Update: Back to factory condition. Issue still isn't fixed.
Newer update: Called Google Play Store via this number 1-855-836-3987. They'll be sending a replacement.

While i am not stock, I did notice this one time with my phone... like extremely LOW to the point i was pressing the phone HARD against my ear to hear.
Solution? I went ahead and flashed Paranoid Android 3.56 and flash the Louder volume MOD in the themes and apps section. That fixed my issue, I also know that not all of you will want to root, and that this SUCKS. but try to restart the phone.
Just root guys, this phone was made for that

Oh actually the issue I'm talking about is different. The ear piece volume is fine, but whenever I talk to someone on the phone, they can barely hear me unless I use speaker phone. I was actually using Paranoid Android, and I was being told I can barely be heard. So I flashed back to factory to see if it was a ROM issue. Sadly it wasn't.. On factory ROM I can still barely be heard.

I'm having the same problem as well. Just received my Nexus 4 last week. They especially can't hear me if I'm speaking to them through my car speakers (3.5mm connection, not bluetooth). Wasn't a problem at all in the same vehicle with my Galaxy Nexus. Please let us know if the replacement worked better.

I am also having the same problem...my girl keeps shouting that she can not hear me..at first i thought some problem with network but than some of ma friends said same thing...whats the option now..?? i am from india and i imported it from US so cnt send back there..is anyone found any solution..??
I tried using headsets and the results were pretty much better..
Wish I could help. Just had to RMA mine today. Completely stock, no mic. Works when plugged in, sometimes, but for the most part no audio. When it is plugged in, the wife says I sound like I'm trapped in a bottle lol echo and static.
I had the same problem when I was running full stock. It was really annoying to hear "I can't hear you..." every other sentence.
This won't help if you do not want to root or run custom ROMs but since I switched to PA 3.56 and Matr1x kernel the people on the other end of the line haven't been complaining. I imagine for whatever reason it was fixed would apply to most custom ROMs and Kernels. I'll actually test this out this weekend and edit my post afterwards.
Edit: I made some calls to friends on PA/Matr1x/Radio .48 and everything seemed fine. I flashed full stock and called back the same people and only one person said they heard a noticeable decrease in the quality. That person also knew I was testing different settings on my phone so maybe they were messing with me.

Bumping an old thread ...
So my gf started complaining that she could barely hear me when I was using my Klipsch S4A headphones to talk--while in the car and in a quiet room. I was on CM10.1 at the time and I had read complaints from others with the same/similar issue on other ROMs, even stock/unrooted. I chalked it up to 4.2 and hoped 4.3 would fix it.
It appears that isn't the case. I just sacrificed root so I could flash a clean install of 4.3 (new bootloader and radio included) hoping it would at least mean I could have normal conversations with my gf again while the devs cook up CM10.2. How bummed am I to find out that the issue persists. I just called her from my office with my headset on and she said I "still sound far away." This is really frustrating. I never had this issue on my GNex.

I wish someone comes up with a solution for this.. I was hoping 4.3 would solve this issue also. Some say its cause of the noise reduction, isn't there anyway we could disable noise reduction?! I remembered I had that option on CM10 my i9300 but not on nexus 4 build.. This is really an issue for me since i always use headset for phone calls.. I was wondering if the original Nexus 4 headset would solve this issue.

Hi guys,
i found 2 "solutions" which didnt work for Nexus 4:
1: typing *#*#3646633#*#* into the phone to enter the engineering mode. "Should" work for all Android, does not for Nexus 4
2: the App "MobileUncle". Does only work for MTK Chipsets (Nexus 4 has another one)
my question: is there something like the Engineering mode for the Nexus 4 ?
Same issue on Nexus 5
FYI, the nexus 5 has the low input volume gain when using 3.5mm headphones with inline mics. I don't understand what LGs problem is with 3.5mm connections or why it was never tested.
started a discussion on in here
Any solution yet???
I have the exact same Issue, Android 4.4.2 and the issue is not fixed weird that only Nexus 4 has it. I am like you trying to find an app or a way to work around the issue, tried to install other ROM using rom manager and phone when SLOW as heck so no idea how to fix it yet, loud speaker to every single call is not the way to go

[Q] Nexus 4 front speaker issues

Hello,
This is my first post so sorry if something is done wrong or whatever. Ive been having issues with my front speaker. I dont think i did anything to break it (i drink a lot though) but its been completely useless for the past week or two. I have the latest cm 10.2 and franco kernel nightlies. I thought updating them might help but it didnt. I also can no longer talk to people on speakerphone like i could before (while the speaker still didnt work). I also tried headphones and now they dont with either. Does anyone have any idea what it could be and/or different ways to fix the speaker?
Thanks in advanced!

Loudspeaker rattle on AOSP roms

I've got some strange behavior while using AICP ROM on my Note 3 N9005 (hlte). So, when I search something through Google Voice, there's a noticable rattle in the loudspeaker while the "assistant" answers... I also noticed that loudspeaker rattle only while playing short phrases. For example, if I ask "the weather in New York", there would be a rattle, but if ask "who is Michael Jackson" - the sound would be absolutely clear..So I'm sure that this is not a hardware issue. Does anyone face it and is there a fix for that?

Bad call quality and metalic distortions

Hello friends!
I'm experiencing metalic distortions (like robotic metalic sound when in call) and general bad call quality in miui v7 (4.4.2)
I flashed over stock lollipop i9500 5.0.1 which has i9500xxuhpc1 baseband...
I have searched for answer but no luck
I have also tried to flash different modems from the modem thread both from odin and recovery, but all of them result in no reception..
I live in Israel and my carrier is cellcom...
Really would appreciate help as I love this rom a lot!

Hi unfortunately the problem only occurs with miui rom and not on neither cyanogen or stock..
Thank you for replying
Then it's definitely something on the ROM side. Did you look through the ROM thread to see if there is any fix?

Similar responses were in the thread, most were said to be fixed by replacing modem, which i tried to do with many different ones including ripping from modems of local stock roms from sammobile
But all result in either no bars or same bad call quality

I believe it has some sort of sound mod ( atleast it enables you to choose custom preset for like viper4android ) but other person in call is also hearing the metalic distortions so i assume it affects the microphone and not just the audio, so i dont think its the sound mod.
