Battery drain! - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know what the hell is going on with my Note 4 (SM-N910F), but my battery is draining a lot faster then it ever has. A couple months ago i rooted my phablet, tried out two or three different custom ROMS (Omega was one of them), but my Note 4 got so hot it got into a bootloop as soon as I entered my PIN. I reflashed stock ROM and it was back to normal again, but lately it started to warn me for low battery (the 5% warning) and turn off itself in seconds even when i had 20-30% battery left. This didn't happen every day, but it was annoying. So i re-rooted and installed CM 12.1 thinking it was the 5.0.1 and 5.1.1 stock updates. The first night I charged it all night but only got 83% battery when I woke up 9-10h later. Today when I was scrolling FB with 35% battery left, the phone warned me about low battery and dropped to 5%. Is it possible that the battery drain is because the overheating could have caused some damage to the phone/battery? I tried calibrating the battery two times, did everything I could find on the net, but nothing helped. I would like to know if there could be something more than the battery that could cause this because I don't want to buy another one for nothing.

you could try to re-calibrate your battery, you can find a app for that on playstore.
is your phone still getting hot when your battery drain is high?
you could post an image of your battery stats from settings or better battery stats so we can see, why it's empty so fast

I already tried that two times, it did make the battery last a bit longer but the 35%-5% problem is still there. I'm new to XDA so I can't upload the screenshot but I can't see any app or activity that's draining the battery. I've done everything I could find in the forums (lower screen brightnes, turned off auto wake, even downloaded kernel adiutor and changed some settings a guy posted) but nothing has changed.. I'm just wondering if it's the battery that's the problem or something else so I don't fo out and give out money for a new battery if it won't help..

And yes, my phone is still getting hot when the battery is draining fast.. I do have an insurance that I could use but if it's just the battery then I can buy a new one. I forgot to mention that the phone gets pretty hot when I charge it, somewhere above the battery connectors. Eather that or the micro-USB connector, or even both at the same time.. The cable has turned yellow just under the connector so I don't know if it could be the charget that messed it up. This started before I even flashed a custom ROM.

Well I couldn't take it anymore and decided to downgrade my phone back to 4.4.4 which it came with. 9h on battery, Spotify was playing for 3h, played a little on Snes emulator, facebook, chrome, and I still jave 56% battery left. Seems to me that I was one of them who got the f*cked update for 5.0.1 and 5.1.1.. my phone is back to normal with speed, battery usage and heat. I'll let the battery drain completely today and see if it will turn off at 25-5% like it used to. The worst thing is that a game I used to play dosn't work on 4.4.4.. but it's still worth it!

Broken battery?

Hi!
I'm suffering from a strange battery behavior lately: This morning, after 9 hours charging, I woke up to a 75% full battery, when usually, it should get 100% charge overnight. Previously, I had an accidental power off by power depletion, some hours ago.
Now, I'm trying to charge the phone but it seems to charge way too slow.
Finally, I decided to power it off and let it charge without any possible drainage. In the moment I powered it off, I was prompted with the battery icon displaying 96% charged...??!?!?!?
I don't know if either the battery is broken, the rom is reporting it wrong or what.
I usually play Ingress, which drains the battery like crazy, and I'm usually browsing the internet and reading twitter on my phone, so, at the beginning I thought I just needed to keep my hands off the phone for a while and let it charge, but after that overnigt 75% charge incident... I don't know what to think.
ROM is Carbon ROM KK, kernel is AK without any tweaks, no undervolting or anything... any advice?

Don't over charge.
Yes, I have the bad habit of being unable to see my phone drop the battery level under 60%. At my job, I always leave it on a qi charger, regardless of it being full or empty. Perhaps I have to take the habit of letting it drain until 30% or so, and start charging then.
Other thing I can do is limit the charge level top, tweaking the kernel setting via synapse..... Could that be a good thing?
After starting the phone, the battery level seems to be OK. It's 87% now and it's draining quite slow, compared to before. I guess I'll have to start treating my battery better.

Some update: the phone was bought on March 2013,but the battery has a build date of December 2013. I think the guys that repaired the phone swapped the battery for another one and left me with a defective one.

Crashing, turn off and massive battery loss

So a few times now my note 4 has crashed (black screen) and turned off. When I turn back on the battery level has massively dropped (30-40% gone) yesterday went from about 40% to 0%. The 40% seemed accurate as using it not too much and usually about that percent at that time of day. Also noticed a few other things, when I connect my note to the pc it takes a while to start and stop charging and isn't being recognised by the pc (or the note isn't detecting it is connected to a pc - only charges)
Any ideas?
Try a different battery?
Are you rooted or custom rom?
Hi, not rooted and stock rom. Had an update yesterday which mentions better battery performance. maybe they fixed something. I'll give it a week. Have also contacted samsung. Not sure if battery is included in the 24 month warranty
I'm running stock 6.01 deodexed and rooted, It's happened to me a couple of time. Either its a samsung bug or the battery is just recalibrating itself. Probably the recalibration
That's good to know but worrying. Its really bad if it happens when I'm out. I think I have a good 10 hours of battery and then bam nothing. If I get anywhere with Samsung I'll post back

Random turn off

Hi,
I have a Note 4 SM-N910C variant that is almost 3 years old.
Starting from 5 months ago the battery level would start dropping fast from 35% to 0% in like 2-3min after which the phone would turn off. If i took out the battery and insert it again, start the phone again it would show around 30% battery level. After a while it would start doing the same fast drops in battery level and so on.
I got a new battery, not OEM and now it doesnst do what i was facing above but it randomly turns off no matter if im doing something with heavy or no load on the device.
The turning off usually happens after the device goes bellow 50% battery level.
How can i test if all the components are ok other than the battery which seems to be faulty in my opinion.
I did order a new original OEM battery but it will take time to get to me.
I want to find out if the rest of the components are functioning without faults so i can decide whether i should get a new phone or not.
Please assist.
New battery
I know its not the same behavior, I have 2 note's. Mine is only a couple of months old while the one from my wife is build in 05/15. Her phone when we just received it would refuse to charge above 96%. Sure the phone would say 100% but as soon as you unplugged the charger it would drop straight to 96%. It did this on 3 different batteries, exactly the same behavior. All these batteries are OEM. When you plug it in it would go rapidly to 100%..
Anyway, I wiped the cache on that phone and since this it charges normally.
Been comparing the battery drain and both phones are using around 6 to 8% per night while on stby with wifi on.
Just try this, it may help you!
Thanks for the replies.
I did try wiping the cache and even did a factory reset.
I rooted the phone 2 days ago to try and recalibrate the battery but i didn't help.
I think the situation isn't degrading cause from today the phone is constantly hot and the cpu is running at around 48 celsius with 7-8% load.
I'll see what happens when the new battery arrives, maybe the phone is heating up cause of this maybe not. It's even eating the battery from 100% to 0 in 2h with no real load on the phone.
Do you guys think a benchmark program will force it to thermal shutdown if this is the issue.
I'm still trying to find out if only the battery is faulty or i have a dying phone.
To me you have 2 problems...a faulty battery and a (new) software problem on your phone.
Constant being warm with a cpu load tells me something on your phone is running all the time consuming your battery and causing your phone to heat up, unless it behaved the same before the factory reset and rooting?
You are rooted so try Wakelock detector for root to see which app (if any) is causing your phone to behave like this.
I will try wakelock to do its thing during the time i sleep. But if that doesnt help ill try a custom rom. Im not gonna factory restore and go back to stock rom. Gonna move away from that and see what happens.

Unusual (erratic) battery percent after battery removal?

Hi there.
I got this 2nd hand Note 3 (N9005) last week, and I'm testing battery life in different conditions with the original top update (5.0), before I flash a custom ROM and use it as my main phone.
System says battery is in good condition, and it has a fairly good standby time, but it drains quite fast (about 1% per minute) when active / SOT. GS monitor says I'm averaging 1h46m SOT, which I know is not good, and understandable since I guess this is the original battery.
Now the weird thing: I had about 13% battery when I turned it off. I removed the battery (I needed to take out the SIM card, I don't think this is related) but when I put the battery again in and turned it on, I had 35%!
I spent all of that until it has below 3%, it sounded the alarm and completely dimmed the screen and so, then I removed again the battery (checked also the contacts, nothing dirty on the battery or phone btw).
When I put again the battery, I got 18% power left. Now it's gone and I am afraid to play this game anymore - I'll just give it a full charge.
Does anyone experienced similar behavior? I wonder if it's a calibration problem, or a known symptom for old batteries.
As a side note, I had a Note 3 Neo Duos last year and the battery was bad. It used to discharge almost instantly from 30% to zero and turned off the phone. However I remember that I could remove and put again the battery for some extra life, just the same. I'm more or less terrified by this lol.
(The Neo Duos, N7502, was stuck at 4.3 without any development. I'm glad I was able to get this N9005 now).
I'm attaching a GS mon. screenshot showing usage so far, and the system Battery Use that shows the two points when I removed the battery.
Difficult to follow your post.
Suggest as first step Wipe Battery stats.bin.
Or from play store battery calibration app to wipe battery stats.
This will not calibrate battery just reset battery stats.

Battery drains fast and is always warm even after a battery change

[TL;DR]
Phone battery suddenly drains faster than usual, drains to 0% overnight. Problem still persist even after April update and after battery change. Can't find any solutions. Help me.
Hey, so about a week ago something very strange happened to my Mi A1 and got worse overtime. So what happened was my battery went from 80+% to 0% overnight. I woke up confused and just recharged it and didn't think too much. After a full charge, I noticed the battery drains abit more than usual and had to plug it in constantly. Before going to bed I charged my phone to 100% to see if it would drain to 0% again. It did. As time passes the problem gets worst. The phone started getting warm when charging (around 40+°C up to 50°C) then after a while the phone runs warm even when not charging (never goes below 40°C). My phone always used to run at about 30-35°C even when charging. I changed the battery myself because there was no warranty on it but it didn't fix the problem. However it did help abit. The battery drains ever so slightly slower now but still drains to 0% overnight. It still runs warm but now it does go below 40°C (rarely). Before and after the battery change, the discharging rate is about 700mA and sometimes reaches 1000+mA (used an app called Ampere, not too sure how accurate it is). The phone was also warmer than usual when charging even when the phone was off (before and after the battery change). I tried factory resetting to see if that does anything but had no luck. I also tried using a Wakelock detector app to see if there was an app excessively triggering a wakelock but all seemed normal. I even tried downloading a "battery calibration app" which obviously didn't work. So I feel like it's a hardware problem.
Now here's what I did and did not do to the phone before the problem happened. What I did was I do charge the phone quite alot most of the time. What I mean by that is when it hits about 30% I'll plug it in but I never leave it plugged in after a full charge or charge it overnight and I seldom let the battery drain to below 10%. Even so, the phone never got warm like how it is now. That's about all I did to it. Now what I didn't do was, I never tried to install custom ROMs or root/modify my phone in anyway except for the post about how to enable 4G+ which didn't work for me.. My phone is completely stock. I also didn't install any new apps from the playstore or from any 3rd party sites nor were there any updates for any apps installed in my phone. I've had the same apps installed for a couple of months before this happened. I also haven't dropped my phone for a couple of months. I only dropped it less than 5 times from short heights and I have a very rugged case on. I also didn't use any 3rd party chargers. I'm still using the charging brick and cable that came with the phone. I have tried using other chargers that are 2A but no luck. So basically I didn't do anything out of the ordinary prior to this problem.
Just some extra information
1. The hottest part of the phone is at the top right corner of the back. I assume the CPU is there (?).
2. It happened before the April update. It was the same before and after the April update.
3. Phone is running on Android Pie if that wasn't clear
4. The phone is only 10 months old
5. My phone is the Global ROM version
6. Performance wise, its still responsive and snappy. Doesn't lag or freeze or anything.
6. I always have mobile data on and use it as hotspot for my laptop at uni. I have been using it like that for the past 9 months. However the problem happened when I was at home during sem break so I was mostly connected to Wi-Fi.
Sorry for such a long post. I hope somewhere out there, there is someone who can help me or other people that have a similar problem so we can fix it.
Thanks.
In the upper right corner, should be the modem area.
Try holding the phone on airplane mode during the night and monitor drain.
Also, try changing the SIM slot and do an APN reset. If this fails too, try changing your SIM card or if u can, try another operator SIM.
If you changed any value with QXDM PRO , try and put back the default values.
Good luck
