Upside down camera pictures when using in-app camera - Nexus 5X General

Seem this in quite a few apps on my Nexus 5x, including Google Goggles. I can't work out if the phone is at fault, or it's badly coded apps.
The fact Google's own apps don't work correctly, suggests it's hardware problem.

Indeed. It is super annoying. The scanner app I use is like that. Hopefully it will get fixed.

It is not really the hardware problem, but how the camera sensor was placed in the phone. Engineers didn't have enough room to place camera sensor portrait/landscape(don't recall exactly) and some apps need to be updated to know this and display corrected image.

So why aren't Google fixing their apps?

Google Goggles is dead. Hasn't been updated since may of 2014. Google won't fix that app.

They placed the sensor in reverse landscape instead of landscape.

Same happened with me, using Windows 10.
- Media Player Classic: upside down
- Windows Media Player, Win10 player embedded, and phone player: ok.

I can confirm having this issue with several apps. This is embarrassing.

i have this issue too. first nexus device and last. so much for the 'great first party supported software'

Still no fix....

HTC Youtube App

I received my Touch Pro 2 from Vodafone last week and aside from the garish theme colours for the TouchFLO, I've noticed that Vodafone haven't included the fantastic Youtube App.
Having tried the latest version of the app I could find, it worked but stopped Media Player from working in the process meaning I could no longer play MP4 or 3GP files from the HTC Album (comes up with 'source filter not found' when you try and play the video.) Only way I could sort this out was to do a hard reset as the app wouldn't uninstall itself.
So far I can only get Youtube to work from the web, the quality of which is shocking, or from CorePlayer which is equally as bad.
Does anyone know where I can get the Youtube CAB that's specifically written for the Touch Pro 2? Perhaps someone with the standard HTC TP2 ROM could extract it? The rest I can wait until a decent ROM is written then I'll unlock and flash the phone but Youtube I can't live without!
I have installed Kinoma on mine - seems to play youtube OK over wireless but over 3G it was pretty poor and kept stopping. Not sure if there's any way to get it to buffer more.
Steve.
That's just the problem Steve.
Whilst Youtube can be streamed even via the web through HTC Streaming Player or CorePlayer, the quality sucks and is barely watchable at times.
The HTC Youtube app is as good as dammit viewing on the desktop. Where HQ streams are available for instance, these are of superb quality and smooth too, even over 3G. Nothing else comes close but I can't find this app for love nor money, not the TP2 specific version of the app at least.
Noone got the Youtube app to hand or perhaps could extract the cab from the WWE ROM?
Not Vodafone

Just to let you know it's not just the vodafone version I have an Orange branded TP2 and the app is not installed on mine either?! If you are desperate to watch youtube try youtubeplay the interface isn't great but at least it works
well I know google made a youtube app for wm (strange that they are making apps for wm when they have android), and personally I like the htc one better, but the quality seems to be the same:
http://www.google.com/mobile/winmo/youtube.html
you have to enter your phone number and they will send you a download link to the app I dont know why they dont just let you download it off their website, but at least they made one lol

Kinoma Play's YouTube playback quality will be as good or better than other YouTube clients under the same network conditions.
3G bitrates do vary constantly, so the quality of the data connection when you start playback affects the quality of the video/audio you'll see. You may get a higher-quality version the next time you play the video, or if you stop moving (if you were walking), or if you move 10 feet in any direction.
(Note that the latest Kinoma Play update includes a workaround for a YouTube bug, so results are not as good in Kinoma FreePlay as I write this. A Kinoma FreePlay update with that same workaround will be available soon.)

Thanks for the input guys, I see it's not just Vodafone who disable the app in their version of the ROM?
Whilst there are alternatives, I still think the HTC app is by far and away the best both in terms of usability and quality. So far the official HTC app is the only one I've seen that allows the HQ picture where available which makes a big difference to picture quality. Even standard videos look so much better through the official app, even at full screen.
I've seen several versions of the HTC youtube app on the web, the latest of which I tried but it messed up the media player and wouldn't play video files anymore. This had a knock-on effect in that you couldn't play videos anymore from the camera album. As mentioned I had to hard reset the phone to get rid of the youtube app and return things to normal, haven't touched it again since, perhaps it was the wrong version for this phone?
There must be the official HTC app for the TP2 floating around somewhere, esp given that some people have started 'dumping' their official ROMs for exploitation by the cookers.
Surely it wouldn't be too difficult to extract the app from the official HTC TP2 ROM for someone who is up to speed on these things?
I used to have a Xperia X1 and someone created a YouTube app for that, I've installed it on my TP2 and it works a treat. Quality is fantastic and it works well on 3G/HSDPA as well as WiFi:

That's great... have you tested that it doesn't mess with the media player though?
Try filming a short video with the camera and then try playing that video back through the HTC album and see if it works?
If it works then obviously the video will play, if not, you may get a message similar to what I did which is 'can't find streaming filter for this file type' or words to that effect.
Let me know how you get on and if all checks out ok I'll try that CAB file

Unfortunately this appears to be the case for now.
In the meantime I've downloaded and installed the Google YouTube app (see most recent thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4101425#post4101425 ) which appears to do the job to a certain extent. At least it doesn't mess with the HTC Album & video settings.
Obviously if anyone comes across the HTC version of the app that DOESN'T foul up the album & video then I'm sure there's quite a few of us, Vodafone users in particular, that would like to hear about it.

How to play embeded video in chrome (or other browsers)

So I'm sure it is well known that the nexus 7 doesn't have flash, however for embedded youtube videos that most likely use html 5 ( I know because I can play them on my ipad just fine) I cant seem to get the video working well on the nexus 7. for example, I tried loading up a roosterteeth.com video, (doesn't matter which one all of them are the same) and the video plays but I have no control over it, no scan bar, no full screen, and the video is choppy. this is one terrible experience that I really wish someone could figure out how to fix. at one point I was using dolphin and once it asked me if I wanna play the video using a stock video app, however that only worked that one time and only in dolphin. Someone HELP!

Netflix stuttering/lagging video

Hi,
Is anyone else having these problems with netflix on their G2?
I did search google and this forum for problems like mine. I read a lot about out of sync audio/video. Slow user interface, bad image quality, etc.
All this is fine here. Audio plays well and keeps playing. All remains in sync. but the video keeps lagging in about every stream. It's not like it needs to buffer again, it's just annoying lag.
I had contact with netflix. They told me it was probably my Phone running background apps i wouldn't be able to stop, and i should contact LG. Well, if that would be true, my HTC One X shouldn't be able to play everything smoothly..
I am beginning to suspect it's something with the Phone and would like your comments on this.
Thanks!

no problems on my vs980
Little update;
I'm on Android 4.2.2.
I deleted the Original Netflix app and downloaded the "netflix black rotation v2.1.2 apk" from xda.
With this app, the quality is not as good as with the Original app, but no stutter/lag!
Any ideas?
Still using the old app. Works fine. Quality on the new app is better but still no lag or stutter with this one. Read something about the new app only working with newer android versions. Don't know if this is true but if anyone is having the same stutter/lag issues, try the older netflix app!
yes the real problem is when Netflix use best quality video stream, limiting the quality is not a real fix.

Dolby Digital on Netflix

I noticed that Netflix only shows Stereo audio options on movies that offer 5.1 DD+. Does this mean that the Nexus Player cannot passthrough DD+ because my receiver supports it. I see no audio options in the player's settings either.
According to Netflix, 5.1 is supported on the Nexus Player (https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23004).
So, I'm not sure why it's not working, either. Still researching.
Android TV doesn't have any type of audio passthrough. Google is working on it though. But it can decode 5.1 to multichannel PCM... it's just netflix hasn't updated their app to take advantage of anything new in Android TV - doesn't use the voice search api, the api that adds suggestions to your home page, ect, ect.
well, according to netflix, the app on the nexus player works too.. which it obviously doesn't for half the users... so I'm not exactly inclined to trust them

Passthrough does work. I have kodi(xbmc) installed and it is passing through dd dd+ dts. My receiver changes to the corresponding mode and the audio is as it should. So this means the android os can pass through. The problem it's not Google. It's the app manufacturers.

Wrong.
There is no passthrough in the default media player in Android TV (exoplayer)... yet (they are supposedly working on adding AC3 passthrough). XBMC (kodi) doesn't use androids stock media player for playback, it uses it's own that is built into the app... which is why passthrough works in that case.

Im well aware of that. My comment was specifically to point out that the issue is not hardware and not the android OS. Which you have just agreed with by starting that the issue is the native player not outputting in passthrough.

It is almost never a problem at the hardware level for android devices. It's always at the OS level, and starts with the built in media player most apps use. This applies to the ADT-1, Nexus Player, even the Fire TV. Android has never had passthrough built in at the OS level, unless it was added by a device manufacture w/ their customized version of Android. Take for example Sony GTV devices, the Vizio Co-Star. Those only had it because they had customize builds of Android. The Nexus Player runs stock Android, which lacks passthrough at this time.

If you're having problems launching Netflix on Android TV, clear the app data. The app is very buggy on Android TV. Mine craps out constantly with login errors. Only workaround is to clear data and retype all your login info.
How the **** can they release a MEDIA Player without passthrough? I don't care if it can be accomplished with 3d party app like Kodi. This should be done with native player no questions asked. This is in my opinion a big fail.
Also the lack of hardware support for anything else than h264 is quite disappointing. ?

I agree, lack of native surround passthrough is really an embarrassment on Google's part. It really shows the lack of practical testing this device went through (if any at all). How did someone not say "wait a minute...you think we should enable surround sound passthrough? It is 2014 after all".

Google fails at seeing the big picture. People who invest in surround systems don't want audio decoded on the device to PCM, they want their expensive receivers to do the decoding. They should also be including mpeg2 hw decoding in all android tv devices if they intended these devices to do anything with live TV in the united states.
I'm hoping they turn things around, but remain skeptical considering the failures so far. Sony's 2015 line of smart tv's are supposed to be all Android TV... I hope they get it right...
Those TV's better have passthrough, better be able to pass 5.1 over ARC back to a receiver, and better have mpeg2 hw decoding. Do it right, or don't do it at all. People don't want half baked crap in their home theater systems.
Well...putting the Android media player aside and focusing back on Netflix. I'm trying to get in touch with them regarding the 5.1 audio. I sent their developer e-mail a message asking about it. Any other ideas? I sent the e-mail to [email protected], but maybe there's a different place. The only other options I could find would be to call or chat with them.
Hello,
I'm using the Netflix Android App on a Nexus Player running the most recent Android version and firmware (Android 5.0, Nexus Player firmware LRX21V). I noticed that when I watch movies that normally have a 5.1 surround audio option on other devices (such as the Windows 8 app), the same movies DO NOT have that option on the Nexus Player.
According to the weblink below from Netflix's help center, the Nexus Player suggests that there should be an option for 5.1 surround sound ("Learn how to enable subtitles, closed captions, and alternate audio (including 5.1 surround sound..."). https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23004
Is there any chance that this feature isn't working properly on the Nexus Player? Or is it supposed to be coming in the near future? It would be nice if we could have that option.
Thanks for the help!
Best regards,
David

It amazes me the amount of movies on Google Play that are offered in Stereo only. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why I was not getting 5.1 with no success (assuming it was a hardware/setup issue). I decided to check the store and noticed 90% of the movies are only available in 2.0 stereo. This is truly disappointing. I can't remember the last movie I got from iTunes that was stereo only. I cannot understand why Google offers mostly in stereo...makes no sense to me.
To clarify, the hardware supports passthrough, it's just the apps that are not implementing it for whatever reason.
We'll just have to wait until the devs get off their asses and add support. Sigh.
Have to say, for something that people were so excited about, Google has really sh*t the bed with this one. Little to no support and no real info from Google support either. Piss poor. I find myself using my FireTV stick more often than the Nexus Player, as much as I'd much prefer to use the latter.
I do actually get Dolby Digital 5.1 out of Netflix on chromecast. Casting to nexus player is definitely different, though. It actually launches the Netflix app when you cast instead of regular casting. Not sure if this is this is android TV issue or if Netflix is accessing with how casting works.
Even after updating to android 5.1 still cannot get multichannel surround. Dont get it ! It would be expected to get at least similar multichannel audio compared to chromecast. When using hbo go or netflix through the player's google cast functionality I can only get stereo. What are we missing here.

play any downloaded vr video or movie in daydream

If you want to play your own downloaded be videos or movies in daydream view simply download what you want to watch onto your phone turn off NFC in setting then launch the video file on your phone will start playing in the double lens format likes it's already in a vr then just simply pop your phone into the daydream there ya go now functionality is definitely lacking compared to what it will be once a dedicated vr viewer is released but it works

So this is a 3d video you downloaded? Any idea what the file format is?
If it's what ever is on the phone, it may only have had one option (photos) so launched it in that?
Unless you've installed other apps?
But, files generally need changing to make them 'fisheye' so that they play properly.
Since NFC isn't active, you should be able to launch the video without popping in the Daydream; then if you swipe up and view the list of apps it should tell you what the app the video is launched with. That might help me figure out what I need

It's still in beta, past-due for an update.
