[Q] Screen replacement for ZE551KL: would Selfie (ZD551KL) screen also work? - Zenfone 2 Laser Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've edited the whole post to simplify it:
Dropped nine-day-old Zenfone 2 Laser (ZE551KL). My heart shattered, as did the display.
Asus Canada wants $124 to repair it (Canadian dollars; estimate provided by telephone representative), and the only location to repair it is 3388 km (2105 mi) away and apparently takes walk-ins only, but I'm quite comfortable repairing it myself if the repair process is similar in ease to the Zenfone 2 walkthrough.
Searching for ZE551KL LCD modules returns only two or three matches. Since I can't post links because I'm too new at xda, I'll just post the search terms: "90AZ00T1-R20010"* and "90AZ00T1-R20020"* (I don't know what the difference is, but they're both unavailable anyway), as well as "B90AZ00T1-R20010" (which I would need to e-mail about availability, compatibility, and pricing). (Note the leading B on the Czech website part number, which makes searching for the module a bit difficult, since searching for either of the part numbers only ends up returning the original pages).
Update: I heard back from AsusParts.eu (where I found the asterisked parts above), and they said that they can't get the parts and that I'd need to get it serviced through Asus. The phone was only released in November, though, so I'm wondering if part availability will change (not just with them, but in terms of the lack of availability anywhere online).
The rest of the search results are for:
ZD551KL (Zenfone Selfie), which has essentially identical components and size, but the front display has a larger, better, centred 13 MP camera (compared to the ZE551KL smaller, offset 5 MP camera), but specifically mentions "ZD551KL ZE551ML" along the ribbon cable, and the AliExpress sellers say that it's compatible with both, while the eBay sellers only mention ZD551KL.
ZE551ML, which has different internal components, but the display and device dimensions appear to be identical.
If the ZD551KL display also supposedly works for the ZE551KL but the cameras are markedly different, it appears that I'd have to replace the camera module, too, and that's when I become particularly concerned about compatibility (both physical and firmware). Does anyone know if it actually would work?
The ZE551ML screen looks identical, but I'm not sure if it actually is. Does anyone know about this?
Any thoughts on other places to try finding the actual specific display?
I contacted Asus, and (no surprise) they won't give me any part-related information. "Send the phone in" is all that I'm told.
Thank you very much!

Well the smaller resolution might cause problems.

An authentic ZD551KL screen should have the same resolution as the ZE551KL. It's the size of the part, ribbon cable compatibility, and camera that I'm particularly worried about.

Can you buy it from the repair center or ASUS?

Unfortunately not. I figured there was nothing to lose trying to call them and live chat them requesting anything of the sort (part information, available to purchase, etc), but they would give me no information whatsoever and kept referring me back to opening a service ticket for repair. Their lips are sealed; they insist on doing it themselves.

Well you will need to see if the camera is attached to the same board and if you can get a different front plate so that the screen will fit on the different phone. The ribbon cable itself should be fine. Most parts should be rather modular. The only concern would be the front bezel.

Silly question but I just bought the phone on Amazon 32Gb and 3Gb RAM for $199. One of the selling point for me was the Corning Gorilla Glass 4, Its supposed to be pretty durable, so how did yours crack? And have you been able to find a replacement screen you can diy?

Mine was on a desk in a communal laboratory office, attached to a long charging cord. Someone asked where something was, so rather than describe its location, I got up to show her where it is. The long cord was tangled in my chair wheels, so when I backed my chair up, it pulled the phone off of the desk, making it land face down onto a slightly gritty laminate tile floor.
I found a screen from a place in Germany. They say that they get their parts directly from Asus. Both of those statements should make you expect that it won't be cheap, and indeed it is not: €80. That's within a few dollars of what Asus Canada was wanting to charge me.

I would like to clear one thing to you dear,
ZE551KL & ZD551KL have different screens.
ZE551KL has 401PPI but ZD551KL have 403PPI.
my working twrp for ZE551KL does not work with ZD551KL due to this issue ( same twrp with full working touch for ze551kl does not work with zd551kl touch)
decide yourself.
for confirmation you may read my twrp 2.8.6.0/2.8.7.0 thread.

Do you have any thoughts as to why the Selfie LCD (even direct from Asus) has "ZD551KL/ZE551KL" written on it, if that's the case? Just curious.

In the same boat
I dropped mine on New Year's eve
I searched on Aliexpress (tinyurlDOTcom/njtjav2) and found a replacement digitizer for around $35 (free shipping) which is not that expensive.
I'm from Europe btw.
Tomorrow I plan to go to my local Asus representative to see if they can replace it for around the same price, if not Aliexpress it is.

Just be really careful. All of the results that were in your link are screens for the Selfie (look at the top of the screen, and see how it differs from the Zenfone 2 Laser ZE551KL). The speaker and camera holes are in completely different spots.

Thanks for this.
I went to the official Asus representative today and they offered original replacement screen for around €50 with warranty which is a no brainer for me.
I'll wait about a month which would have been the same if I went the Aliexpress route (if they had a screen for my model that is).
To be honest I was surprised that it was that cheap. I guess competition is a good thing

Did you buy the phone using a credit card?
Many credit cards have accidental damage insurance for the first 90 days of purchase.
Usually you have to file a claim and get the work approved so it takes time, but they pay for it once you do all the paperwork stuff.

I checked Aliexpress today and found something that appears to be the right one, at least on the surface: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Orig...tizer-Assembly-Free-Shipping/32620432352.html I still need to call Asus to find out what it will cost in USD for me to get them to fix it.

I want you to know how nearly-completely-psychotically thankful I am for your post. I called by bank earlier to ask about what kind of purchase protection I had, and the answer was disappointing, but after you made your post, I looked up information for my bank, and it suggested that I should indeed have 90 days of accidental damage insurance.
I called them, filled out the form, and received the cheque a few days ago. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Pure/Diamond 2 Housing Swap?

Does anyone have any experience with swapping the housings between the 2? I am getting the Pure tomorrow but prefer the housing of the Diamond 2 whos full housing is available for purchase. Ive done a ton of swaps, even the iphone, but never between htc rebranded devices... any thoughts?
I'm not sure how well that is gonna work out for you. There are different things between the two of them. First the layout of the buttons. But that may not be a problem. The Unlocked Diamond2 has a front facing camera. So there may be an issue there. The device is curved differently so who knows it the Mini USB port will align right.
I'm sure that no one has done it since the Pure has only been out for a few days and some people that are getting it don't even know of the Touch Diamond2 or that the PURE is a Touch Diamond2. The T-mobile EU version is just like the pure but has a FF camera. So if anyone who has that phone and has done a swap can tell you for sure but I doubt it. There could be slight changes the just throw the entire thing off.
I was just thinking about that. I too prefer D2's design over pure's but I needed 3G. I've done many phone customizations and would definitely undertake this task if it's possible.
I think one of you should try and see if it's possible. There are TD2 Housings for sale on ebay. $20. Worth it if it works.
The $20 one may just be the housing. I asked the seller if its the complet 3-peice housing set. If not there are more for under $40 that show pics of the full set and say its the full set in the description. If you don't trust ebay go here and pay the full price. They have original OEM parts for almost any mobile.

yeah i found the cnn one and will probobly end up doing that, from the pictures they look like they both have everything in the same places, except the front facing camera will not be there. I wouldnt be suprised if you could add that though during the swap...

Any updates on the housing swap project? Was it do-able?
Just curious.
You will have to replace the digitizer as well. It's impossible to remove without damage. Also, be careful with the ribbon cables. You need to slide the black retainer slightly to remove them...
BTW....P.M. me if you get into it and get stuck or nervous. I have taken mine apart a good 5 times to get the dust out of it.

did anyone try this yet? i really want to do it because the hard plastic gets scratched up really easily and the back cover is starting to look bad.
Ya the Pure is dog ugly compared to the Diamond 2 IMO...I doubt it will be possible though, to do that switch.

Ebay LCD Quality

Hi, i broke my htc hd2 display and i buy a new one in ebay. They have same image quality of the original htc display? Some one know that?
Thanks
Problem with eBay is what apears to be same parts are actually very different in qaulity & functionality so be very careful.
Have used seller linked HERE below twice with no issues & LCD was equal to original in terms of colour, brightness & viewing angles ...

I bought the combo and the LCD screen was great! Even tho the original screen was brighter, you barely can tell. I know you're not buying the combo but if you do, there's a chance (happen to me this week) you might need to realign the LCD if it's off.

As you said: if 90% are fakes and would be theoretically banned/forbidden, make some simple calculation and figure out what money loss ebay would encounter.
I do realise the loss of profit eBay would take but if they want to keep going without legal problems arising they really need to introduce some action to back up the written policies they make ... the amount of fake junk being sold & imported/smuggled across borders is rediculous & damaging to the economy & enviroment. Hopefully one day soon visiting an eBay link will lead to a FBI notice :-D ...

HTC One Tear down

Looks like it is totally unrepairable, even by HTC

Also i think they have missed the point of simply removing the speaker cover to start the process

despite the score, the article is full of praise for the craftsmanship!
HTC has said over and over that they wanted to create a seamless product, and the absence of any exterior screws is a testament to that.

Our diligent spudgering appears to have permanently mangled the plastic bezel surrounding the aluminum case. It's possible that prying at a snail's pace while applying heat could minimize this damage, but we're not too hopeful. This phone was not made with open-ability in mind.

The motherboard of the HTC One is pretty much encapsulated within copper shielding. Two flat pieces of copper adorn each side of the motherboard.
Here's the thing about copper shielding. It dissipates heat and provides electrical grounding. However, copper shielding is a pain to deal with during reassembly—kind of like trying to straighten out aluminum foil once it's been crinkled.

There is no respite for the weary—even the rear camera is coated in copper shielding.
This is the HTC UltraPixel camera, a f/2.0 aperture, 28 mm lens unit with a dedicated HTC ImageChip™ 2.
It is not surprising to hear HTC bragging about camera specs, as their apparent Siri counter-marketing is Zoe, your personal photo assistant.
Manufacturing such a small camera that can do so much is a hefty task, and a shortage of these units is a big reason why HTC has had to delay the official launch.

The daughterboard remains, but there is still a mystery left unsolved.
No phone operates without antennas, and antennas don't transmit signals well through metal walls. Considering that this daughterboard is on the receiving end of the motherboard's antenna cables and sits directly under the plastic bezel at the top of the phone, we're thinking it has something to do with wireless signals.
See those three spring contacts along the top of the board? They meet the rear case in an area obscured by the plastic bezel. If we had to guess, that's where HTC put the antennas.

HTC One Repairability Score: One out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair)
Very, very difficult (possibly impossible?) to open the device without damaging the rear case. This makes every component extremely difficult to replace.
The battery is buried beneath the motherboard and adhered to the midframe, hindering its replacement.
The display assembly cannot be replaced without removing the rear case—this will make the most common repair, a damaged screen, nearly impossible.
Copper shielding on many components is difficult to remove and replace.
Solid external construction improves durability.

If you were looking for the HTC One to be a device you were easily able to take apart for inner-bits replacement, you might not be all that pleased with the report appearing today. It’s not going to be a device you’ll be popping open on accident, that’s for sure.

With the release of the HTC One, the manufacturer has bet a whole lot on the hardware as a proving point in their history. With this release, the company known as HTC says that they’ve done the best they’re able at the moment – this is the HTC One, and it’s named that for a reason. According to iFixit, this device is just about the most difficult smartphone to tear apart they’ve come across – but that’s not all bad news for you if you’re a general consumer.
The HTC One does not have a removable battery, nor is it able to take a microSD card. It’s got a body that’s made from one solid block of machined aluminum with a lovely pane of reinforced glass up front. A collection of awesomely odd bits and pieces can be found in the teardown, including this fun selection:
• Elpida BA164B1PF 2 GB DDR2 RAM
• Samsung KLMBG4GE2A 32 GB NAND flash memory
• Synaptics S32028 chip
• Cable for display labeled with DATE: 2012.11.30
That last bit proves that there’ve been bits and pieces of this device ready to rock for several months now – the back casing of the device can be seen to carry the date 2013/02/15, indicating that some of the parts have been added as recently as the middle of February (for this unit, anyway.)
Have a peek at the timeline we’ve got below of fabulous HTC One bits and pieces, and don’t forget to check out our full HTC One review as well. This is a device that’s set to either be a skyrocket-ready spaceship to the moon for HTC, or one of the biggest disappointments for the company in their history – if it doesn’t sell, that is. Have a peek at our full run-down now!

The negativity is implied based on a one out of 10 repairability score. How much do you think it's going to cost to repair/replace a display out of warranty? Or replace a unibody damaged in a fall? Ifixit could give a crap about one manufacturer over another so they have no bias in their reporting. What they are reporting is that the One will be a very expensive phone to repair based on its design. No matter how much the following is true.

Huh? Kind of shooting the messenger, no? Since the One's unibody was first shown off I've been curious about how it's held together because it's a very unsual design no matter who built it. Drop tests and tear downs give a lot of insight in to questions I'm sure I'm not alone in having. Sorry if the answer's aren't "fun" and I have nothing to do with the outcome of any tests the One or any other device are subjected to. I'd be just as shocked if another brand's device had a repairibility score of "1." And as I said in another thread, devices get the forum's they deserve. If once in people's hands the One is a "happy" device that's what the forum will reflect. After a year of sticking your fingers in the holes in the dyke that was the One X forum you should know that by now.
And "aluminum" as a material isn't what determines repairibility it's engineering and design focused on facilitating it to keep repair costs down. Here's how the "other" aluminum phone did.

hamdir, do u have any idea how to remove the speaker covers? ifixit looked like they butchered the phone with an axe, there must be another way to have a simpler break down
BTW ifixit said it was all "A"s after the back was removed, meaning removing the backplate was the hardest part

yes the speaker covers are currently falling out on their own in defected units and in drop test its flying easily, so really they didnt need to butcher it like this
they acted under the impression that the entire device is uni body and hence started with the screen, if you notice all the way through the tear down they never removed the speakers
its all hilarious really
Yea i noticed them saying the zero gap phone had a gap when they removed the screen. As far as I am aware the zero gap is to do with the back of the phone and the plastic surround after watching htc's video on how it's built.

I like how HTC has tried to make the One more sturdy for customers. However, I doubted how the production can make a large amount of aluminum body, and now I'm sure it's even harder with this kind of assembling. Not very good idea for production

Chipworks didn't say anything about the level of difficulty with dissembling. Nothing I saw anyways. This puts a little doubt in my mind looking down the road a couple of years. In 2-3 years it will be time to replace the battery...then what? WE HAVE SOME GREAT LOCAL REPAIR GUYS, BUT WILL IT BE POSSIBLE TO REPLACE THE BATTERY WITHOUT WRECKING THE PHONE? Good question huh? How much would a 2-3 year old HTC ONE be worth, if anyone were to consider buying a used ONE?
My current phone, an ATRIX 4G, now 3 years old, had a couple of problems last year. The volume rocker mechanism broke and had to be replaced. I'm also not on the original battery. I have 3 spare batteries just in case. Carrying around a small 10,000mah charger from Ebay
(for $24.95) is an option. But really if something goes wrong with the phone (out of warranty) you may just have to buy a new phone. This means that you cannot count on any trade in value on the phone. If you can live with that, OK. But you still need insurance in case there is a problem along the way.
Just food for thought guys.
This is great! This confirmed my speculation that HTC is just using a single modem for Asia, EU and all other variants of the HTC One! Thanks to the MDM9215M chipset it has!
What it means is
LTE:
EU: 800/1800/2600 MHz
US (AT&T): 700/850/AWS/1900 MHz
US (TMO): 700/AWS MHz
US (Sprint): 1900 MHz
Asia: 1800/2600 Mhz
is only 1 single phone.
So yeah we could cross flash basebands to unlock certain bands. US carriers could purchase the HTC One from Europe then when S-Off is already available they could just flash a baseband of the US model then they should have LTE instantly. Or better yet it's already a world phone by default. Since they are using the same modem chipset with the likes of Xperia Z & ZL.
Lol, to me that only means "don't try it at home":good:

Need Good Source for LCD/Digitizer + Frame Assembly

Good afternoon.
Currently need for a good source to buy a white D801 LCD+Digitizer + Frame from.
Already replaced my screen 2x.
1. due to the Ebay LCD having dead pixels...that source ran out of white screens and refunded the $$. (Gadgetfix)
2. The next screen I got from another source (smart.usa) is even worse with washed out colors and a darker bottom of the screen. Currently debating whether I want to exchange for another one of their screens or abandon these Ebay sellers altogether and find a better OEM source.
Can anyone assist?
OEM Replacement
I just went through this process and went through 5 screens before I found an Amazon seller that had a quality replacement. The screen matches the OEM that I was used to.
I can't post a direct link, as I haven't posted enough. But the seller on Amazon that eventually worked out was Etopaces Inc, fulfillment by Amazon.
Now might be a good time to order, it is about $25-$30 cheaper than when I ordered a week ago from that same listing; frustrating.

Man!!
Thank you.
Don't want to go thru that again.
Read my HTC Sensation posts if you search my name for a good laugh.
Will return the ebay screen and order from Amazon.
Did you get one with the frame?

Yeah, it was the full assembly, so I was able to plug and play. Just ordered some 2mm double sided tape on eBay to seal everything back up.
Hopefully everything works out, just know that you aren't the only one who ran into issues with screen replacements. I started questioning if there were more issues with my device, but it was just the poor quality screens that were being sent.

Thanks again for the heads up.
Promptly removed the defective screen and have packaged it for return
Will update back here with full details once I have a chance to install the Amazon screen.
Just got my new screen from Amazon seller 8090team.
First off the packaging was amazing.
The seller even promised to test the screen himself after hearing my story and rushed the screen to me even faster than the tracking # said.
Paid about 68 including the frame with a few extra for shipping.
Let me be the first to say the screen is better quality vs the 2 ebay ones I had.
My original oem screen on the phone had one the best lcds I've seen in the market and I've seen plenty of first and 2nd gen LG g2s enough to tell the difference.
Will go on record and confirm the Amazon screen is better. If I had to do it again I would have gone this route from the beginning.
I will say the aftermarket screens do not have oliophobic glass like the oem screens do. I noticed this with both the ebay and Amazon screens.
No seller lists this as a feature.
Not a dealbreaker but would love to have the option for it
After using my screen for a couple weeks now I notice :
The viewing angles are not good like OEM.
The head on quality is amazing (looks literally as good as the new Galaxy S6...had then side by side last week) however I wish the viewing angle was just as good as the OEM screen.
Going to decide today if I want to remove this one and exchange it again.
I'm the meantime I may take my original perfect OEM LCD and see if I can use professional tools to remove the digitizer glass and replace just that piece.
I swear it seems like only then will I be happy lol

New tablet after Pixel C?

After 2 years and 1 month my Pixel C got the split screen and black screen issue and seems to have died. I spent an hour on Google chat seeing if they could resolve the issue but they wiped their hands and said get a local repairer to fix it. The problem is no local repairer's are able to fix it as Google don't make it anymore, so they don't have the parts! I need a new tablet. I don't want to go down the Apple route if possible. Does anyone have a recommendations for cheap, powerful rootable tablets 10 inch in size? I was thinking about the Huawei Mediapad M5, but after Google's announcement yesterday I am not so sure. Any idea's?
At this point, Samsung is basically the last bastion of powerful Android tablets. I don't think they have unlockable bootloaders but I'm not 100% on that. The tab s4 has a SD 835 and the s5e has a SD 670. Both have similar cpu performance to the tegra X1, though the GPU will be worse on both. That said, they both can be had for around 400-600$ depending on spec. Tablet size I believe is the same, but the screen is bigger and oled. More RAM and more storage by default. I wish there were more options, because I too was looking at the mediapad m5 until the other day. Now I'm looking at either one of these Samsung tablets, or just picking up a used pixel c. Hope that helps a little.
If you don't want a Samsung tablet (I can't stand Samsung) then you might be better off just buying a used Pixel C off of eBay. They are going for between $150 and $200. I think you are going to have trouble finding a better deal than that.
There are some interesting tablets out of China using iPad and Microsoft Surface screens. They are cheap and you need to be careful about finding one that has a community of supporters. TechTablets maintains a list of recommended tablets that have been reviewed. You have to understand that you are not getting something of the quality of a Pixel C or iPad. That being said, you get a ton of bang for your buck. Especially if there are community-based ROMs available for them. https://techtablets.com/recommended-chinese-tablets-brands/
You also might want to check out the Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Plus if you want something that is getting active development on XDA developers. It uses a 16:10 screen which is kind of a balls aspect ratio for a tablet in my opinion but it has decent guts and can be had for $285-$300 on AliExpress. I just got its 8" little brother, the Mi Pad 4. The MIUI OS that it comes with is not horrible but it's a lot better once you install an AOSP ROM on it like Havoc OS.
Thanks for your input. I have decided to get the Huawei tablet, so we'll see what happens. Oddly since Google told me to do one and I was unable to get it fixed by only local suppliers I found a video on youtube showing the problem and a possible (maybe temporary) fix.
It involved lifting the top of the screen from the back and adjusting the display ribbon cable. I tried it, but couldn't do it and cracked the screen in the process (hairline).
The day after Google emailed and said they were assessing my chat with them and asked if there was any liquid damage to the tablet and to send them 4 pictures of each side of the tablet (front, back and both sides).
Why do you think they want to do that, and if they were going to give me a refurbished tablet do you think they still will if I explain my story with a link to the youtube video? Cheers for any replies in advance.

I am curious, did you ever hear back from Google?

I did. I sent them the pictures of my device and explained to them how I got the crack, which I got when trying to follow this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb3By2Z-Zt4
They said as it has physical damage they would not do anything. Even though I explained the damage was done trying to fix the device as they or no-one else would. They didn't even offer to look at it, as the problem is the ribbon cable for the screen, and me trying to open the device up will not have affected what was the issue in the first place. Google's customer service is abysmal. Apple would not treat its customers this way IMO.
Odd. Sorry that went ****ty for you.
A year ago I tried to fix my Pixel C's stuck power button and cracked the screen badly. I told Google what happened and they sent me a new Pixel C. I didn't purchase a protection plan and it was more than a year old... I don't get it. ?
I'm selling my Pixel C 32Gb in like new condition with adapter & cover through Amazon EU Fulfillment. It is bootloader unlocked and comes with latest Pixel Experience installed. Shipping & payment will be done through Amazon so if interested, send me PM for the link.

Neither do I. Not even a cursory offer to look at it and then say it was my fault. It's like they're saying 'we dont' make tablets any more so if you have any problems then tough ****'. I now have the Huawei Mediapad M5 and as nice a tablet as it is it's not quite the same
I am keeping an eye out for a new tablet but I am pretty picky about it so I might have to wait. I essentially would like the Pixel C again* but faster and with more Android appropriate hardware (think GPS, haptic feedback, better touch screen, cameras that don't entirely suck in every way possible). Either same size with larger screen (smaller bezels) or a bit larger overall would be good too. The new Samsung tablet with the SD855 is something I'll look at. The rumored Nvidia tablet also will merit a look. But for now I will save my money.
*This to me means a decent keyboard accessory, mostly stock/Google Android, open bootloader, and higher quality components.
I've been debating what to upgrade to for awhile now. Then I noticed on eBay there was a seller who is unloading a batch of near new Pixel C 32gb. I sniped an auction at the end and got one for $122.00 US. The tablet is almost new and running fine. For the price, I am going to stay with the Pixel C for a bit longer.
If this is an option for you guys check out eBay. It prolonging the inevitable, but the price is right.
I also hope that mine will run forever. I have it now for about three and a half years and it's still going strong. If mine goes down, I think about getting another one before I try any Samsung tablet. I can't stand anz of the current models, to be honest.
What about Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Plus? It has Snapdragon 660 and I saw a price of $225.
