Exchange Services draining my battery... - BlackBerry Priv

Battery life used to be exceptional on this device... for the last 5 days, the batter will not last 10 hours in stand by mode... goes from 100% battery to shutting itself off inside 10 hours... I checked and Exchange Services used 85% of the battery...
I have two email accounts on my PRIV... both are MSN account so basically Hotmail... one of them asked for the password to be updated due to Authentication Error around the time the problems started... I just deleted both email accounts off and re-added them... it's in stand by mode now and went from 100% down to 97% in the last 15 minutes without being opened, the screen on, an email being received or a text sent.... just simply being "on" and it's drained 1% every 5 minutes...
I'm beginning to hate this phone...

Try to avoid using your phone while charging the battery.
If you don't do that, maybe the battery is just slowly dying, it happens sometimes.
Your best guess is to seek either the Blackberry company if you still have the warranty, or try another battery.

Battery Usage Solved

The following thread on the XDA Desire forums was pointed out to me on androidforums by marabuchi. I did what was recommended and everything seems good so far.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=666404
"UPDATE APRIL 28 2010: PERMANENT SOLUTION FOUND?: Remove Flickr Sync. Go to Settings>Accounts & Sync>Flickr. Then press remove account at the bottom of the screen and reboot the phone - Please report back in the thread if successful! "
I don't have Flickr sync on anyways haha.
after a week of haveing it I stopped messing with it every 2 seconds... and dont have your accounts update every 15 minutes all it does is eat away our battery... I have all mine set for every2 hours and my battery lasts just fine unless I'm playing a game or something ... I even use slacker radio for over an hour a day and it barely used up 2% of my battery for the day
I realize that not everyone is having this issue specific issue, but this sure helped my battery life.
I am now at 31 hours uptime, 2 hours awake time since the last time I charged my battery. My updates are at 4 hours (I'll normally go into the app and refresh), GPS is enabled, Always Connected is on, and I use the phone pretty regularly throughout the day. I have 5 battery bars currently.
Anyway, helped me, figured someone else might be in the same boat.
Thanks
Didn't change anything for me, my calender was normal.
I get probly like 14 hours max on my battery, gps off, always data off, wifi off, screen low, only thing updating every hour is weather. I mostly text and do some web surfing, seems quite a bit low of battery life.
Gmail or Exchange?

I have Google set to sync gmail, but not contacts/calendar. No exchange, and have Hotmail setup with manual refresh.
As a quick update, battery life for me has still been great with pretty much everything turned on. Going about 2 days before having to charge.

This is how fast my battery drains...

Ok, yesterday I put my battery to the test. I decided to use my phone non-stop until the battery drained. During the entire test I had running the following tasks on Task Manager:
Opera---with tap vibration enabled
Messages
Active Sync
Word Mobile
Hotmail
I had:
Push E-Mail (hotmail) "As items arrive" (receiving emails approx every 5-10 mins).
Backlight Automatically adjusted on, with both battery and external power set at 40%.
LeoCpuSpeed app running at 998 MHz.
Constant changing signal strength from 1-4 bars and H to 3G to E and back to H(Inside the lobby of a building).
Weather, Twitter, Facebook and everything else to be updated automatically, each one being set to update asap.
BsB Tweaks settings in the pics below.
Apps Installed: see pic below.
Also had some texting, about 30 messages from 9:30pm to 11:00pm with notification set to vibrate and ring. No phone calls
So, if you think your battery was bad...this is how mine did
100% -- 8:25pm
96% -- 8:38pm
89% -- 8:53pm
83% -- 9:10pm

Pretty much my battery did not last even 4 hours. Keep in mind I was browsing Facebook and XDA forums on Opera non-stop. Also noticed when the charge was at 8%, it started draining 1% per minute
My conclusion...I will have to get a spare battery cause a single battery can't handle my every day usage Have tried different Radios, but they all seem the same to me strength and signal wise. I haven't tried any other Custom ROM than KUMARS.
In case I forgot something I'll add it later on.
I also had very bad battery life, i have flashed a few different roms since ive got the phone about a week ago, and id have to say
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=667601 this rom has outstanding battery life. i would definatly give it a shot.\

Pal, how would you compare this rom with Kumar's in terms of Battery life?
My stock rom had slightly more battery life compared to Kumars.
I had terrible battery life with the Cell Evo ROM.
I have had terrible battery life ever since I had my phone. However, I am currently using ChuckyROM with 10.50.19_2 radio and it's actually getting me through the day now.
wow u had all that crap going on & it lasted about 4 hours and ur complaining? seriously???
how long did u expect it to last? large screen, 1 ghz processor and a constant connection online... i bet ur HD2 outlasts ur laptop
thats like saying, i filled up my gas tank before i left home, drove like a maniac, floored the gas pedal after every red light & stop sign but i expect my car to not run out of gas.
real world tests are more acurate... without all that on u should get a full day of "normal" usage...

Sure did, the max I can get on normal usage is around 10 hours though.
Battery Training
I do not believe the HD2's battery requires training. Older styles of batteries had something called a "memory effect", where a battery not fully depleted, then fully recharged, created a shortened cycle time.
Newer battery components, IE Lithium Ion, or Lithium Polymer do not have this characteristic. Accordingly, there is absolutely no need to "train" the battery.
Now the only requirement with the newer battery types, is to maintain a charge between 50-70% during long term storage (ie what your phone was charged to when first received).

got my tmous hd2 launch-day... battery sucked so bad I cried (on the inside too). Returned it for another (hard as hell as I had to call corporate and have them call a store and make them hold one when some came in) after 2 weeks and all battery problems gone. 2 days easy with 1 charge. and I am a bit of a media whore: videos, podcasts, web, push, etc.

mine sure did, the first day i got it, it went dead about 6 hours after i charged it..
2 weeks later and it was down to about 60% after a whole days use and it would die during the night if i didnt put it on the charger.
now its been about a month and now it will go a whole day and a whole night and still be in the 40%s in the morning.
I don't see the need to have all that stuff running continously but it seems that the battery lasted as much as it should. I close out all programs propperly when done but I have the screen at the brightest and still the battery lasts me 30 hrs on average. I don't think I could kill the battery in less than 4 even if I tried real hard.
currently using the rom bellow... not getting 10 hours on my phone... my life relies on e-mail. So few calls rarely any texts. But 4 e-mail accounts with each having a send/receive every 5 mins... with downloading the full e-mail. I don't know what to do...
You are correct that Li batteries have no true 'memory' but there is a bit more worth mentioning... Here is a great article on Li battery extension & calibration:

my battery is horrible too, i cant last more than 10 hours without bareley using it. i took it off charge 7:30 a.m. took it to school, around 10 i texted a little bit used the camera to take about 10 shots (no flash), and i played bubble breaker for about 15 minutes. brightness was on 20...keep in mind after i close everything i fully close it through task manager.
around 11 my battery was at 65 percent. and i only USED the phone for about 25-30 minutes of light usage. i honestly dont understand how a battery can be this bad with a phone. the battery is HORRIBLE!!!!!
i got 3 different batterys exchanged so far, none of them work goood. i conditioned it as well... fully charged then fully drained then fully charged again
please help =( i dont even use my HD2 anymore because i HATE the battery, i strictly use my BOLD 9700 until i find a solution to the battery problem
NYC, the biggest issue with the HD2 battery is its low capacity (1230mAh), which is lower than most smartphones in general. Add the huge screen (a big battery draw all by itself) and the other power-hungry functions of a super-capable phone, and it can become very difficult to maintain a charge.
Now, in your case, I'd suspect that you have something that's updating data in the background, at least once if not repeatedly. Twitter, mail, weather, etc are all possible culprits. Even if they only update once in the morning (for example), they flip on your 3G connection which then remains on until you switch it off manually. Bluetooth and wifi also drain the battery quickly, even if they're just "on" and not being actively used by you.

My phone drops to 11% after 24 hours of doing nothing with it besides fiddling for about 10 minutes. The signal bar is 3 ~ 4 bars at all times on a 2G band. I'm not certain why it's this crappy even though I pretty much leave it on standby. Any ideas?

Battery w exchange on

Hi all,
Just switched from xperia x1 winmo to galaxy.
I love my exchange and cant miss it.
So I set it up on the galaxy. Left it in good hsdpa coverage area over night for 8 hours after fully charging it. Battery now at 76%.
This is not so good... My xperia was significantly less consuming.
Moreover, sometimes push is sluggy. Some maols from this night only appeared after opening mail app.
I am quite disappointed...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
now it is 6h30 since 100% charge
Battery down to 33%
Android reports:
Display 36%
Battery in Standy 23%
Android OS 16%
Phone in Standby 15%
Android System 5%
Task Killer 4%
Maybe 5 mails arrived, opened mail app 3 times and 3-5 opened for very few minutes.
Had the phone in bad reception area (1-2 bars) most of the time.
Still, this is really bad!
If you do a search, you will find many posts advising that the full potential of the battery will not be available until at least 5 complete cycles.
This means battery fully charged, then run to fully empty, then fully charger again, equals one cycle.

well, better now, but my old Xperia X1 still beats the **** out of the Galaxy in terms of battery & MS Exchange Sync reliability...
Samsung: 2 days only under optimal reception conditions
Xperia: 3 days any which way
new test from last night:
charged to 100%, clean reboot, exchange sync on
7 hours
=> -15% battery
I conclude
The SGS does not survive one working day.
Recharging twice a day is not acceptable!
I activated the push today so I will see how long it last
For the moment I am at 81% of battery and it has been unplugged for a little bit more than 3 hours
I watched also 20mn of french news so 57% of battery used by display
I think it could last the day if I don;t do anything to stressful
there is a very specific way to charge this battery right out the box to optimize its full potential ASAP
so you turn on the phone for the very first time and use it on whatever battery power thats left. then use it to the point which it shuts down itself. now turn the phone back on again, and plug in the charger, keep using the phone but with the charger still plugged in. when the battery meter indicates "FULL". unplug the charger. and repeat these procedures twice.

It's been now 9hours and I still have 43% of battery.
42% of display (2h11)
19% call (10mn)
Android system ( including sync) 15%
...
So for sure it won't last more than 1 day but you should be able to last 1 full business day
I even switch on the bluetooth to send some mp3 to my wife ( it failed ... she had my old iphone and I forgot it wasn't possible ), the gps for few min ...
I am also listening music for around 2-3 hours
EDIT : by the way, I was in front of my laptop and half of the time the mail arrived before on my phone and I got all my mails
still got the JF3 ROM, but heard that newer ROMs may have trouble with Exchange.
Email works ok for me, but appointments sometimes take tooo long to sync.
My office is well-shielded (lots of steel), so only got 1-3 bars, sometimes switching HSDPA and EDGE.
However, my previous phone had to endure the same.
7h18m since unplugged, battery at 74% still remaining.
Display: 49%
Cell Standby: 24%
Phone idle: 17%
Android System: 4%
- Exchange sync is on.
- 2x Google account, email, contact and calendar sync is on.
- Updated 4 apps from market.
- Display on for a bit more than 35 minutes in total since unplugged.
- Twitter and facebook sync is on. Refresh every 15 minutes.
- Weather service refresh every 2 hours.
I've still only once not had the phone last a full day on one charge, and I use it quite heavily. Playing games, taking pictures, reading feeds etc.
I don't know what you call heavily but after 15h my battery is a 7%
I have 3h of display which takes already 38% of the battery
35mn in more than 7h is not what I would call heavy ... especially if you read, play games, take picture ... unless you do so with the screen switch off
now for the OP I guess this bad reception can explain the ewak battery but not the difference with the previous phone .... Just mean that the battery was better on the previous one
the SGS is useless.
My Xperia could do email & exchange sync better and browse some web pages.
The SGS has trouble with exchange (tasks!) and COULD do browsing and apps better. But if you actually start using it and looking at the superb screen, the battery runs empty quickly.
So what is the point in having this device? Honestly, this is quite frustrating.
[Update]
9h20
100%->81%
radio: 74% (why does it translate to "Akku" in German?)
Telephone: 23%
Email: 2%
one email came in during that time
I just read of a guy on another forum who got 8 1/2 days out of one charge!!!!!
I'm getting about two days, had the phone three weeks and the battery has improved, at first I was loosing 30% in only a few hours. I initially starting turning off email, then once-per-hour to save battery, but now after a few charges I can leave both Gmail, gTasks, Exchange on push sync and a few widgets which update at regular intervals... I still get two days of average usage. Not like my old Nokia, but then again the Nokia was nothing like the SGS
Note, I do have a profile which turns off autosync between 23:00 and 06:00, and I use autokiller, but apart from that it all stock.
now at another place with full bars most of the time:
11h40 since charging
50 minutes telephone call

69% goes to calling
22% radio standby
...
mails came in with 2-3 minute delay ... sometimes its rather instant ... well, WiMo and blackberry can do better

unfortunately, this is what major/ popular finger touch screen device deliver, be it Apple iPhone, HTC, and SGS.
I'm surprise to know Experia can last that long, is that the Winmo version that that uses stylus? the pressure-base (or rather stylus based) touch screen have a very long battery life.
PS: I have around 100 mails in 8 hrs, and my phone need a charge during lunch in order for it to support me until night.

I was told that Blackberry Storm and Storm II have the same battery performance like iPhone and SGS.
WinMo 6.5 is using stylus based. I curious how long can WinMo 7 battery life last with that finger-touch based screen.
I don't see how resistive screens vs multitouch screens matter in this case.
Looking at the energy info, radio in standby seems to consume a lot. And also phone in standby. The phone's screen is on for very few minutes, just to quickly read some mail. Most of the time screen is off and push mail service is active in the background.
Besides, Samsung talked about OLED and SOLED as SAVING energy ...
Well, maybe it is just the OS.
I think WiMo 6.5 is just a better OS. I wonder what the HD2 is like.
To bad the original WiMo 7 has been canceled. This touch & fun cellphone trend is horrible!

Signal Strenth and Battery Life

I just got my droid x a few days ago and I'm having problems with battery life. I work 12 hour days at a state penitentiary which cell phones are not allowed to enter the building. My phone is rooted and I have about 8 bloatware apps removed like blockbuster, skype, ect in case that matters at all. My typical day is waking up at 4 AM unplugging my phone fully charged. I get to work at 5 AM and between 4-5AM I prolly send one text and sometimes visit one website. So at 5AM my phone is in standby mode until I take a lunch and come out to my car between 12-2. So the phone is on around 9 hours so far but not used much at all. Today I took my lunch at 1PM and when I pulled my phone out my battery was at 15%. The battery ussage is like 72% cell standby, 14% screen, and like 14% Phone idle. I checked my signal strength at work and it was like 99-102 dBm which I beleive sucks. Also today was very hot 100+F so that might also play a factor but I came from a iphone 4 last week that went through the same daily routine and never had battery problem (of course att may have had better reception at work which used less battery). So what do yall think? Is it because of the poor signal strength that runs the battery down within that time even though its in standby? Is there a problem with my phone?
I know this isn't really a fix per se, but any reason not to put it in airplane mode?

yeh thats what Im going to try tomarrow. Just weird my wife has the same phone and in a full day of her using her phone it still has 70% battery life when Mine is in standby all day and it dies. But I do work at a prison out in the middle of nowhere and im sure the reception it very bad but i didnt think that would cause a phone in standby to go from 100% to almost dead without using it. Guess ill figure it out tomarrow when I try airplane mode.
Try juice defender
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Try turning off GPS. That made my standby mode last 10x longer.
Just a thought are you using handcent? I was until 2 days ago after do some tracking it appears that it was not acting well with something and my battery died very quickly. Since my wife has it on her phone as well I am guessing it is with something else I have DLed but since my wife has not gotten many apps I have a hard time finding out what it might be. But changed to chomp yesterday and at the end of a 16 hour day while taking 130+ pics along with texting browsing ect was at 60%.
Are you using an exchange account to sync email? I found that when I leave the exchange email sync set to "push" or "as arrive" (or whatever that setting is) it totally drained my battery. However, when I set it to sync every 15 min my battery life improved probably 2x.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
battery usage all depends how the user phone is setup, if you have email clients with push activate, that will drain battery, having gps location on will drain battery, screen brightness will drain battery, widget that update though internet(3g, edge) will drain battery and etc; take all that into account and try out the battery manager on the phone that turns off data connection after 30mins of inactivity.

Exchange account chewing battery life

Dear all,
I have the Galaxy S2 since friday and my battery is lasting about 4 hours with normal usage. Without usage about 8 hours, tested during the night. I had also high Android OS percentage, I tried hardreseting, that lowered the percentage but with no markable results for battery live. I attached some photos. The second discharge was during the night doing nothing. From 90% to 10% in about 8 hours.
I now did a hardreset again, and tested the discharge in original condition (only battery app installed, no WIFI, no sync, just google account for market). I lost about 2% in 1 hour (phone idle) what is think is normal and gave me an estimation of 2d5h.
Now I created my exchange account with syncing contacts, mails and calender with backgrounddata and automatic sync on (everything on default) and now I need about 9% in 1 hour (phone idle) and I have an estimation of 10h06.
Would I use the phone in a normal way I assume I would have 4 hours battery live again.
Do you think that this (exchange) could be a reason for the high battery consumption?
regards
Michael
the first image shows "WiFi Sharing", right? Why, if you said you did not do anything besides Google and Exchange?
Did you read all these threads about WiFi sharing killing batt life, and also certain routers?
I am using Exchange, get about 15 hours with light to moderate usage. Not perfect, but better than yours.
Hi,
thank you for your reply and sorry for being not exact. The images show the status of the phone before the last hard reset, so after the hard reset I did nothing beside of Google and Exchange.

OMG, that is a SUPERB drain! And I thought I had battery issues. Bro, I think you need your device replaced, else do a factory reset, don't install anything and start monitoring. There is definitely something wrong with your phone.

I wonder what keeps your phone Aufwachen with Bildschirm Ein
What are those icons in top left corner? If you are keeping some weather app pull weather data every 5 minutes, and some battery program ping your battery every minute, that would also drain.
I agree, I think you should try a reset, set up the phone while still on 3G , only then connect to WiFi, configure Exchange, and then test with nothing else installed or running.
My battery life was not perfect, but I think it is improving. Over the past week I had to charge at least twice a day, now it is getting to about once a day.
Remove calender sync from exchange server. Had same issues on sgs and gingerbread. Give it a try...
