Verizon activation with unlocked bootloader - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know for certain if Verizon will activate my Nexus 6p since it has an unlocked bootloader? I'd prefer not to have to lock it back up to have it activated. I wish I had a SIM from a previous phone but I do not. I want to do the prepaid Verizon service. Project Fi is not working out for me
Thanks

There's no activation that Verizon needs to do. Just pop-in a SIM and you're good to go. I would advise double checking APN settings as I did have some weird issues with MMS not sending.
Using the APN settings here resolved it.

No, it does not matter what state your bootloader is in when you activate new service, prepaid or not Unfortunately you will have to go to a VZW store to get a new service but they should be able to activate there. When the N6 was brand new like a year ago you couldn't get new service but I believe you can now.

thanks. would have never thought to check APN settings. Where can you get a nano SIM? Sounds like I have to go buy one/get one from Verizon?
Another question...I went to Verizon online and put in my IMEI and it told me it wasn't valid. The phone is currently active on Project Fi....would that be the reason the IMEI would show as invalid?

If you have an existing (and activated) Verizon sim you can trim it to fit the nano size holder. That's what I did with my micro? size sim.

They might not cooperate if it is not in their system yet. Do you have any old VZW phone that you can activate service on, or someone you know that you could borrow? Nano SIM size is best like Ifone or if it's a micro size you can easily cut it down.

The store is pretty ymmv, I know a guy who works there so I took my wife's old iPhone 5S, had him give me a new micro SIM, activated her phone on my line, then popped it in my 6P, and MONEY =D

use a gophone?

I am visiting US for a month.
I bought an AT&T gophone cheap phone with unlimited text, data and calls.
The sales rep at bestbuy told me that I can use that SIM with any other unlocked mobile phone.
Now the sim is only working in the gophone. Any other unlocked phone is not recognizing the sim.
Is there any workaround for this? In S4 or any other android phone is possible to use that SIM?
I tried returning but the set can be returned not the packgage(calling minutes etc).
Thanks in advance.
Your should be able to use that sim with any unlocked phone or any att phone. Go to an att store and have them check your sim card. Also, did you apply any locks to your sim card?
Tapped from the Shear Galaxy Near You!
There was a change to the way these Sims work. ATT has them locked to the phone they are shipped with. You will have to have them unlock it before it will work. The person at Best buy probably wasn't aware they changed this about a year ago.

T-Mobile Nexus 6 works on all carriers CONFIRMED

Hey guys,
I just purchased a nexus 6 from t-mobile and popped in a sim from att, sprint, and Verizon. I can confirm all 3 worked flawlessly with no problems.
At the device start up, i did skip the part where it tried to activate on the network the sim was from.

Are you seeing the issue of voice + data not working at the same time? When I'm on a call on Verizon, Wi-Fi works, but mobile data shuts off... is this just Verizon, or is this a "feature"?

But what I do want to know is if Verizon will whitelist the imei numbers . because I am soooo ready to pull the trigger to buy at a tmobile store. Did you have to activate the tmobile first? That's what the rep is telling me here

Unless something has changed with CDMA technology, the Verizon phones shouldn't be able to use data while on an active call. I know they are working to get that working with some new LTE standard but I haven't heard anything about it being here yet.

I'm considering switching to TMo anyway, so I picked up 30 days of pre-paid with the phone for 45$. I plan to try both carriers on my commute, see how signal is on both carriers on the train ride, downtown at work, etc. before making up my mind, and this device makes it as easy as swapping the SIM out!
The issue I had, was I didn't have a nano-SIM. Verizon rep at the store told me there was nothing they could do... I told them if he got me a nano-SIM, that customer support could active it... He gave me a SIM and let me use their phone to call Support to activate it. The support person did a "SIM swap" for my existing device, even though my Note3 obviously doesn't use a nano-SIM.. but that's all it took to activate the nano-SIM, and it works perfectly.
I may be misunderstanding your question... I believe the confusion is that you don't actually activate the phone... you activate the SIM IN the device. You should be able to take the phone out of the box, and drop in an already activated SIM and all will work fine...

Good luck getting your answer. If the device suddenly stops working on Big Red, I'll post here (as soon as I've completed my switch to another carrier).

Lol. Yea that's what I was worried about. I didn't want to buy it then down the road oh yea this I.d. doesn't work anymore.
I did not register my device on T-Mobile at all. Just popped the other sims in.
What I'm told is that carriers only care about imei when activating for the first time. If you just put your own sim in there they just can't see the device type which really doesn't matter unless you're looking to call them for support.
T mobile store gave me **** about buying the phone out right. I had to get a friend to add me as an authorized user on his account to buy the phone OUTRIGHT. So stupid...
Also, at T-Mobile the phone out right was 649 where everyone else is like 50 or 40 bucks more which was also sweet.
I also did not get bloat Ware on the phone from the carriers.
The devices CDMA identifier (MEID??) needs to be in the carriers whitelist so if the OP didn't place a voice call over either the Sprint or Verizon networks itnis not "safe" to to say it works on all carriers.
This is supposed to be one model for all of the US with 4 SKUs for the variations, and it should work but there is still the question of whether the CDMA carrier. Allows the phone on their network.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk
I can confirm I've activated my nexus bought directly from moto on both sprint and T-Mobile. Both voice and data worked with each carrier. Sprint takes a little more when than just putting the Sim in. They need to activate the MEID in their system. You can't just put an active Sim from another phone in and have it work.
Interesting..
Other users have reported the exact opposite.

Buying from T-Mo living in a non-T-Mo area
Yes. I must be one of the only people on here in the U.S. not living in a T-Mo area.
I just ordered from T-Mo (64GB MB). After much conversation and clarification, I've learned that one can buy a Nexus 6 from them outright, which requires also buying a $10 SIM activation kit. Since I do not live in a T-Mo area, I will have to call and cancel my 'yet-to-be-activated' plan, which also required a $50 deposit. By utilizing T-Mo's "buyer's remorse", I will be able to keep the phone, since I bought it outright, but will be refunded my $50 deposit for the service, without ever having to activate it on T-Mo's network. From there, I will pop in my AT&T SIM card, and be on my way! The only thing I'll be out is the $10 SIM activation kit.
Also, the rep's did acknowledge that the Nexus 6 is one of the few phones they have that are already unlocked.
Please do critique this if you foresee any problems I'll have popping in my AT&T SIM and using my existing service with them.
EDIT: Yargh. T-Mo had zero 64GB phones, and have since called me back to tell me they are on back order. But hey... at least I have an order in now. Beats what I've accomplished so far on the Play store all to hell.

I bought my device from T-Mobile, removed the T-Mobile sim it came with, put my Verizon sim card in, and it worked no problem. This happened with my phone on ATT as well. The guy next to me did the SAME EXACT THING on Sprint.
I am not BSing you guys in the least. I have no problem helping out in anyway I can. I'll even give you the number and the guy at the T Mobile store who watched us do it lol.

This is incorrect, it has been working for 3 years now. Data while on a phone call has been working since LTE came out. It worked on my Note 2, Note 3, and currently works on my Galaxy S5. Also works on my families HTC M7 and M8.
However, it no longer works on the Droid Turbo, and now I believe the N6.
But the original assumption was incorrect, data + voice has been working for years. They did something now that it is not working on new devices coming out.

VZW CDMA Compatability?

All,
It seems that the only way to get the XPE working on the Verizon network is to use an already activated SIM.
If I'm not mistaken, this is only for the LTE portion of the radio (since LTE is a GSM derivation).
To activate a phone on the CDMA network, I believe its IMEI has to be whitelisted.
So, my question is, can this phone use Verizon's CDMA network?
This is important because, while I do get some LTE service at work, the CDMA repeater network typically picks up my phone so that I can receive calls.
Thanks!
CDMA works fine. I don't get LTE at home, and my MXP works fine there.

Easiest way definetly is sim swap. That being said. Being that i wanted a fresh sim. Went to store. Official vzw. All that needs to be done
If you don't have a activated nano or want to cut your micro. Go to store and let them know you wish to activate new MXP. Have them call level 2 tech and they can take care of it pretty quickly. Activated in hand. Or call #202 and explain samething and they will send it. Either way mine is activated and everything works great.

I ran into trouble with Verizon activating my device. Apparently the IMEI wasn't white listed yet.
What I had them do is use and already activated S6 on my account (wifes device). To issue a nano sim. Then plugged into my device and that got it working.
Really not impressed with Verizon not having the devices white listed already. Not sure if it's because mine is custom (64gb/ leather). Either way, I'm activated.
Does tethering work fine for those of us on the UDP?

I had LTE once I got a nano sim. They couldn't issue me a nano sim. I'm coming from a galaxy s4 so needed to get a nano sim. Took almost 1.5 hours, but this was the employee calling someone and trying to find a way for a while. Then after all that I suggested using wifes device imei (which is on same account and takes nano sim). Which that process took maybe 10min tops and plugged the nano sim in and worked instantly. On my account shows my device as "non Verizon device". Didn't even know it is the moto x pure

Verizon on the G5 Plus

Has anyone activated their Moto G5 Plus with Verizon? I am wanting to do that myself but need to know if the phone is compatible with the network. Has anyone had any issues with Verizon service on their device? I would like to hear anything, even the most trivial issues. But pros are welcome as well, I'm jus more concerned about the cons. Thanks!
After rooting my phone, I just popped in my sim card from my old Verizon Note 4 to my new Moto G5+. Everything runs fine. There was no activation process. My Note 4 had a micro-sim, so I had to trim it down to nano-sim size, but that was easy.
Same, mine just worked when I popped the sim in. People are reporting bad voice quality on phone calls with VOLTE (verizon's HD voice). But you can disable that until there's hopefully a fix.

Thanks for the responses. I don't think I'll ever use VoLTE, and that issue can probably be patched with an OTA relatively easily. So I can just activate by using my old SIM? sounds deceptively easy... Does the phone automatically add APNs as well?

I believe you need a sim card. It isn't like it use to be before they had LTE. Your best bet is go to a verizon store, get a sim and have them activate it or get one online and have them do it over the phone.

Just head over to a Verizon store and buy a SIM. I recommend activating the SIM with a different phone and just putting it in the G5 when done. Big Red/Big Brother hates unlocked phones and freedom, so give 'em what they want - a Verizon-branded phone - then transfer it over.

Do keep in mind that if you switch to a custom rom, you will be unable to use Verizon's Visual Voicemail service. You'll have to rely on the stock dialer for that.
Great. Sounds like how the non Verizon pixel works on Verizon. Same deal, just need a preactivated sim. Sounds like due to the volte bug, no 4g video chat.

That no longer works with they do now is when you're in the store they turn it on to verify it on their network even if you factory reset with the Sim no longer of a option
so update if you change sims prior to activation in sprint it remains unlocked. However unsure what happens when you put the sprint sim in

If the sprint sim is in, I am pretty sure it locks the phone to their network until you call and request to have it unlocked. I will know soon enough, even though I got the pre-order discount, I hate having phone payments and pay them off as soon as possible.

I know people have been successful, when buying it from Sprint directly. You just have this make sure the phone isn't powered up with a print sim in it. Also Amazon had them back in stock as of a couple days ago.
The next question would be, if someone out right bought an unlocked version and they popped a sprint sim into it what would happen....
Traded in my LG G6 from Sprint on September 13 for the PH-1(Directly from Sprint)..Phone was setup when I walked out of the sprint store..A hour later after a couple of calls and texting I switched over to T-Mobile with no problems..The phone comes unlocked out the gate..Reports told you that before the first phone ever shipped..Factory unlocked with all U.S. LTE bands..
Have you tried putting the sprint sim back in
Here was the first phone that they set up in store

Isn't that saying a locked bootloader, not carrier locked SIM?
I have a essential ph-1 from Sprint and cannot unlock bootloader... Any help?
