Xperia Z5 Waterproof Test - Xperia Z5 General

Has anyone here ever tried testing the waterproofing of the Z5? By that, I mean completely submerging it in a pool for a few minutes, not only running it under the faucet for a quick cleaning.
Given that the phone has exposed USB port and headset jack, is this still possible? Or does Sony's updated waterproofing blurb about not dunking it underwater valid due to these exposed parts?
The bestselling factor I'm buying its bigger sibling (i.e. Z5P) is because of its waterproofing capability. And I definitely would want to be able to take underwater shots and videos. Any advice on how to properly do this? (e.g. putting some rubber to cover the ports while underwater, etc?)

Have a look here:

Today I was hanging out with my Xperia z5 during the charging and I notice that when the led got green (so about 90% of charge) I could have seen its light through the jack hole. Is that normal? Does this compromise the waterproof? Sorry for my bad English but do the same and let me know, try to see the led (on) thought the jack hole

Yes my friend, i see the ligth too. Its normal, ive maked some photos and videos under the water and my phone its ok, only problem you cant charge your phone until its whet, you need to dry your usb port...

How to take pictures with xperia z under water?

Xperia Z is a water proof phone that can be used under water. But can its touch screen be used underwater too?
The answer is a big NO! You simply can not use Xperia Z’s touch screen under water whether you want to do anything on your phone.
Why Touch Screen Functionality Doesn’t Work Under Water?
Is it Sony’s manufacturing fault? NO! This is not a fault of Sony, it’s because water conducts electricity.
What functions can be performed?
Play a music before putting it in water, it will not stop
Record Sound
Use Flashlight while making sure its on before going under water
Photography can not be done as it requires touching the screen
What should you do if you want to take a photograph underwater?
As we all very well know that Xperia Z doesn’t have a hardware camera button to take photos so the answer is simple. Set a Timer to take the photo. An alternate method can be to install any other camera app from app store like Camera 360 that lets you set volume buttons as a Camera hardware button to take photos.

WHY would one want to use this phone to take pictures under water? It is NOT designed with that function in mind. Please do read the manual that came with your XZ before you bugger it up then write here blasting the phone!

I thought it says it can survive under water of up to 1 metre for 30 minutes. So why not have some fun photo takings under water? If not its kind of pointless buying this phone.

The phone is a water resistant phone not a water proof phone
The real idea is for it to survive every day life like getting caught out in the rain, dropping it in the bath or swimming pool
Using buttons under water would certainly risk water ingress
And swimming with it would be a risk, and the warranty does not cover water damage

sigh...it's always the same...people mistake waterresistant with waterproof.
just because an airbag might save your life in case of a car-crash, you don't drive into a wall on purpose, do you?
waterresistance is your airbag in case your phone gets dropped into water or s.th. like that.

I have been saying EXACTLY the same thing here for months only to be met by general abuse by some owners who are clueless regarding this mobiles water resistance. The water and dust resistance are in case of accidental contact and not to be confused with an industrial made device with underwater capabilities by design..
What ticks me of is when I read threads where owners have the temerity to complain about the XZ when it is damaged due to use in a sauna or after being boiled in soup!
Several posters here have actually copied and attached the Sony guidelines that clearly show what the mobile cannot be exposed to yet some still persist in abusing a domestic phone and thinking the XZ is water proof when it is water resistant and not designed to function under water only survive ACCIDENTAL contact.
I have also said numerous times that its an awful shame that some owners appear to lack the same level of intelligence that the XZ posses!
Have you seen some of the Youtube 'tests'.....more money than sense, take a look at the chocolate clip! Absolutely absurd behaviour.

I agree. If you want to possibly destroy your own phone by placing it in situations it wasn't designed to cope with then go ahead. That is your choice.
But don't give people the wrong advice regarding THEIR phone. The only correct answer to give regarding questions on the water resistance of this device is what is written in the manual. End of story.

I think we would do better trying to pee in the corner of a barrel! I wrote months ago here, when the mobile was released, that we would soon find owners doing the most ill advised things with the XZ due, in part, to Sony's own un wise advertising campaign
It beggars all belief what some people are doing with the XZ. It also beggars belief that after they do these puerile things they come here and write posts complaining about the mobile!.
We have seen them taken into saunas, swimming pools, the sea, lakes, diving, jet skies, cooked in chocolate and boiled in soup? I do ponder what sort of person has the money and total lack of intellect to do some of the things they do with a domestic mobile phone.
Some of the complaints are absolutely absurd. Deliberately dropping the phone onto a concrete floor from various heights to see how many drops it takes before the glass breaks. Hitting it with a lump hammer? Certifiable behaviour.
What can one do?

Actually, it is Sony's fault.
The up-coming Galaxy S4 Active has a screen that will function underwater, so the fact the Z's screen doesn't is simply a reflection of Sony's choice of parts.
As for the comments about how the phone is only water-resistant 'just in case' it gets splashed and that people are reckless to willingly submerge their handsets, that's ridiculous.
The handset is IP57 rated, that guarantees it will survive submersion to a depth of up to 1m for up to 30mins, provided an owner doesn't exceed that they are doing nothing wrong.
IPX rating is there to ensure the phone doesn't get water damaged. Nowhere does this rating mentions that the said device will work normally when submerged. Its just to protect its body and nothing else.
As for taking underwater photos and video with Z, Sony never advertised this nor mentioned it so please don't point fingers at Sony. You simply cannot keep your expectations in check.
The ZR gets a camera button and also has a higher IP rating than the Z. Sony is advertising underwater photography because of the simple fact that the ZR is designed in a way for it.

Our u can chose the camera timer...
As you said, it's not Sony's fault - but it would be nice to introduce power button shutter and "underwater mode" to our XZ Camera app - or at least, explain why it's not possible - if it truly isn't possible or shouldn't be done. I personally don't care about that - but there are tons of people that do.
I dont really get it. I can use the screen of my Xperia Z underwater. Are there different models out ?

Here in the Netherlands, they actually show posters with the phone dipped in the water. In the stores there were bowls filled with water where you were able to put it in and I have also seen real life women (sounds nerdy) in showers at the stores, using a XZ.
Maybe they never intended to advertise it like this, but I can defenitely accept why people use it that way.

How many Defy of yours have lost waterproofness?

Hi, fella forumers! I'm just wondering: how many of your Defy have lost (or still retain) its waterproofness up to now?
Mine has lost this quality about half a year ago. At first I noticed that there were vapours gathering inside the screen, which would go away if I opened the back lid for a while. But once the micro-USB port totally stoppoed functioning that I wasn't able to charge the battery, so I have to got it repaired. I was told that circuit board has water stains which caused the malfunctioning...
It's actually my seconf Defy, which was bought in Oct. 2011, after I've forgotten my first Defy in taxi... I was pretty satified with Defy at that moment and really value its waterproofness, so I didn't hesitate to buy a second one while there were already a lot of more advanced (but not waterproofing) smart phones on the market. Therefore, its waterproofness just lasted for roughly two years, which is much shorter than I had expected. I thought for at least five years it would be as new as just rolling out of the assembling line every time I washed it under tap water - but it turned out to be not the truth, sadly.
Well, I have to admit that I did wash my Defy regularly - in fact almost everyday, because - well, 'scientists' say that computer keyboards and mobile phones (previously it was traditional telephone) collect more germs, etc. that toilets. So eveytime I was back home, I just put it under the tap water, briefly let the currents to go through it. It shouldn't hurt, right?
Right now my Defy is completely 'hydrophobic'. I no longer dip it in water. I guess I will continue to use it for a year or two. Still, the fact is not up to my high expectation.
So, I would like to see if this is my own unfortune or a normal phenomenon. It's quite critial to know the result because if I do change my mobile phone, I would definitely choose a waterproofing one still. But now my confidence for such phones has been significantly weakened. If new phones repeat this fate after just a couple of years, I don't think it's really meaningful to pay more money for this not-long-lasting porperty.
Maybe the manufacturing technoligy has already advanced - phones nowadays are tougher than their predecessors?
Well, mine is about 8 months old (yes, I could've bought a newer device but thats a different story). In my time of using this phone, I would only say its water resistant and not exactly waterproof. Sometimes when I dip it in water (either to clean it after a busy day outdoors or when friends want to test it), i realize that some traces of tiny droplets do make it inside (looks like vapor sometimes). But it does not enter the battery area. This is probably due to the rubber lining. It still worries me as these traces of tiny droplets did somewhat enter.
I would suggest cleaning it with a wet cloth instead. Treat the waterproofing like it is an emergency feature...just in case
If and when you want to switch phones and still want waterproof, I'd say look at Sony. If you need removable battery, the Xperia ZR looks promising and if you don't mind not being able to access the battery, their other models are alright too. For me personally, battery life is important.
R u using any custom ROM?
My defy is waterproof to a great extent, but steam does enter, and sometimes condenses on the inside of the screen, and the camera lens. But under running water/rain no water enters. I once kept it in a bucket of water for some time, and a few drops made it to the edge, or maybe they came from the cover itself. So, it's good enough for me

Yes, I've been flashing Quarx's roms.
I agree with you that Sony's Xpreia might be a good candidate, but it's only IP57 or IP55, right? So the grade is even lower than our Defy.
In fact it seems that nowadays at the market there are only two major series of waterproof smart phones: Sony's Xperia and Samsung's Galaxy S4 Active. Some sources mentioned that the latter is not that water-resistent. Of course there are other tougher phones which are heavily-armoured, but there are twice thicker and heavier - real bricks. Some have suggested that Lenovo's S750 is the next Defy, but as far as I can see, the technology used for waterproofness is the same of Defy's. Naturally I doubt if it will last longer than Defy.
IMHO, I think, at least in my case, the water enters into my Defy mainly through the back battery lid. It's made of a piece of platics that bends after year's using, so there comes the gap between the rubber band. Also, as vai0 has mentioned, the USB lid is vulnerable for the same reason. There's no conern for the headset jack, because it's totally made of rubber.
Anyway, I wish factories like Samsung and Lenovo will not follow Motorola and just make only one shot for good, but will keep designing new tough phones to the market.
By the way, I don't think phones like Moto X applied with nano-coating does not make too much sense, since the phone's still not watertight after all.

The Sony may be ip55/57 but its good enough from what I've read. As for Samsung, I didn't suggest it because I don't like how they design things. Its appalling and I feel as if its insulting the consumer with their designs and material finish. Unfortunately, Samsung is one of the very few manufacturers that constantly deliver on 2 other important things (to me); removable battery and expandable storage. Still won't buy from them. But hey, thats just me. As for Lenovo, I have not tried it yet. Personally, I'm looking at the Xperia ZR at the moment if i choose to change (will still keep my Defy+ as secondary if i change ). A review in case you're interested too
Yeah, nano-coating isn't really water-proofing. I find it more like a water resistant protection. Sometimes there are phone models that become popular to the point that accessory makers produce cases that offer some sort of protection against water/dust. Thats something you can look at as well (with caution of course)
Defy is not water proof, it is water resistant. I did never wash it or put it into water and it is still in good condition (bought 06/2011), now with Android 4.4.
I'm replacing it with an XCover2 (IP67 certified) and also there the manual warns to immerse it in water although it has an underwater camera.

Note4 S6 Camera Upgrade

The Galaxy S6 uses the same camera sensor as the note 4, but the S6 camera module has a slightly better lens. I use my phone for all kinds of product pictures and scanning notes/ lectures at school so I gotta have the S6 camera in my note 4. I'm going to document my swap here.
I just received my S6 camera module $20.00 from ebay G920F is the S6 model and 16M is the mega pixels the sensor captures. I'm still researching the video limit removing hack especially increasing 4k capture time from 5 min to 30 min. Heres my new sensor, I'm waiting on amazon to ship some disassembly tools I've been sorely needing. It's about time I had a real sprudger and not a harbor freight nylon body panel pry bar.
Pic of new sensor.
Let me know how it goes I've been thinking on doing the same thing
From what someone said samsung said the camera want work in n4 the to the software not compatible with the 2 phones. Let us know if it works along with some sample pics showing the improvement or issues.

^Hahahaha that got me rolling
Did this work?
So I want to say this is one of the hardest phones I've ever opened. I have a bunch of video footage I took and have not yet edited any of it. If you're super impatient I'll give you the super fast rundown without any details. Yes it works, but it isn't plug and play. The sensor is the same but the circuit board it is mounted on is not the same. The S6 camera module won't fit into the cutout made for the note4 camera module. What I ended up doing was removing the optics from the S6 camera lens, and swapping the actual lens portion of the camera module onto the note 4 sensor board, I'm waiting on gold foil tape from amazon to repair my EM shielding that got tore up by the glue. The note4 is entirely glued together. I'll post up pics and videos a bit later when I get more time. You can see the S6 CCD sensor and board there, I just snapped it since it was in my way and I couldn't fit it in my phone without cutting up my motherboard. I got the optics from it and stuck those in my phone. The photos are shot from my S4 which I'm using while I wait for foil tape from amazon. I have not gotten to test the software compatibility because my phone is still apart.
Another difference is in these little rollerballs inside the lens. I imagine they have something to do with focusing, The note 4 has 3 white ones in each rail you can see one in the photo it's the white sphere in the bottom of the magnetic generator part of the module. The S6 has smaller black ones as well, you can see in photo too. The note 4 doesn't matter on the arrangement of rollers, but the S6 has different roller arrangement and I wasn't expecting to find those so I don't know if I lost some or put them in the wrong order, I have to get another S6 camera module to investigate that if it matters
tl;dr you can swap the optics but it isn't as simple as you'd hope
This is pretty hardcore, I have to say. I was thinking whether or not this would work in my head, and now we have someone crazy enough to actually try it.
auto focus has some issues, but if I let it autofocus then move the camera manually I get a really nice clean shot. Noticing the phone gets pretty hot right behind the memory card slot, I'm wondering if I need thermal paste or something back there, but I put the phone back together and everything is ticking along just fine, I'm going to order another s6 camera module so I can pay attention to the order and composition of the rollers maybe that matters too. If that doesn't work then I'd say while the sensor may be the same apparently the board that drives the electromagnets is different and therefore this won't work since that board will not fit unless there is someone who can fashion an adapter cord to go between the sensor board and the mainboard thus allowing repositioning of the sensor board. I'm going to see if there exists some sort of "extension cord" for this type of connector. Basically I just need a bit of ribbon cable to give me a little flexibility in positioning the board and I can just plug and play the S6 board in there since I dremeled out my subframe a little.

Uh I would say less. Auto focus flat out isn't working. The lens isn't getting positioned correctly relative to the ccd, this is a software issue or a hardware issue. The video is producing right now. Guess I should start taking some footage showing the problems. Just finished doing the swap video. This is only my second youtube video so I'm learning. I'm a filthy casual =P
Video should be produced and uploaded to youtube in an hour so sayeth the progress bar.
Off to the gym back in like 2 hours. Depending on how automated cyberpower is with youtube I'll have a link for you guys.
AAAND I forgot sound, man im a scrub I'm gonna postpone gym its too hot right now anyway.
Gutsy! My note 4 will not autofocus at all. Im interested if you think it is hardware or software. I have dropped it once. Could that have damaged these balls you are talking about?
Maybe or jammed it, the sensor is just free floating in there with 1 permanent magnet on each side of the optics carriage (the part that actually contains the glass lenses) then in the plastic housing there are what I think is 4, 2 coil electromagnets, one on each side that float the sensor to the correct position while it rolls on the little rollers in the two V grooves to keep it perpendicular to the ccd.
This is a photo of the S6 sensor, the note 4 sensor you can see in the video. Note 4 sensor has 6 white rollers total 3 for each Vgroove S6 has atleast 1 white 1 black for each but I may have lost some because I opened that sensor first and wasn't expecting tiny tiny rollers to be inside.
Okay learned a lot still a lot to learn about making videos.
Here is the video of the complete teardown with some commentary about what I'm doing. Gives you an idea of what you'll be up against in there and shows the disassembly of the camera module.

I considered a similar situation when trying to use my phone as a decibel meter to measure how loud my car exhaust was. I was getting complaints from one of my neighbors about my wrx being too noisy so I ended up measuring it with my phone. It didn't work because the microphone on these phones is chosen and calibrated for its sensitivity to the noise a regular human voice makes when the phone is reasonably close to a human mouth. Using the phone in a "live" environment or somewhere there is a ton of background noise or amplified vocals or other sources of noise outside of its specs will likely interfere with your recordings. You'd need to test it in a more scientific way to narrow down the problem try isolating if all recordings are ruined or just really loud ones or if even the choppiness could be caused by processing power and too many background apps or something.

The solution for lack of Micro SD, removable battery, small batter, water proof!

I am very very happy with Samsung Improvements.
Let me settle your problem above with my humble opinion.
1. No SD Card Support.
Answer :- Dual USB OTG Drive is being produce in this world to solve this issue. I my self is bringing a Strontium Dual USB OTG Drive every where hanging with my keys and it is much more convenient then Micro SD card is because data can be view, used and moved in out easily anywhere and anytime.
Size of a Dual USB OTG Drive is only a 50 Cents.
Weak or Slow Micro SD make the phone juggling in the process of output data and this will affect the phone performance. Thus the more data you had in a phone will decrease your phone battery easily.
2. No Removable Battery / 3. Smaller Battery.
Answer :- Fast Charge is being researched and implemented into Samsung phones where you can charge up the phone easy and fast.
Power Bank is being created in this world to ease battery issue. Slim type of power bank like Xiao Mi 5000 Mah would help user alot. Size wise Xiao Mi 5000 Mah is Same like S6 so you can bring anywhere you can easily and the weight is so so so so light.
Hardware like the Processor and RAM in the phone is being improved so that the hardware would not consume alot of battery life.
Exynos Processor is being refined with smaller die cut size so that the processor wont consume lots of battery while RAM by using LPDDR RAM the voltage is being reduce so that the bettery life would be preserved during usage and sleep mode.
It does not means that higher spec phone need superior big size battery.
4. No dust and water proof.
Answer :- Our eyes would not able to see micro dust and particle where each and every second everything in our world is being infected with dust. It is impossible that our phone would be dust proof unless we lives in quarantine zone that is being clean every 30 minutes.
Water proof is useless feature if you never use that feature at all. How many percentage in this world is utilizing the water proof feature of a smartphone.
Do you know that phone with water proof feature would decrease the phone performance limit in terms of speakers and heat control.
The water proof layer block the speaker and make the speaker sound weak and not load this happen to lots of water proof phone outside in the whole world. With the water proof layer heat in the phone is hard to escape and it makes the phone hardware inside suffer, Therefore the phone hardware will be easily spoil and need to enter SC to repair.
Thus after the phone send to SC repair do you guarantee that the phone is still water proof ?
I can say NO I CANNOT GUARANTEE because once the seal is being tempered there are chance water will leak into the phone.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Actually this is a reminder for you. You need to do research before you compare a product with another product. Don`t always see the negative side of a product. Be mature by widening the view of a product. There are no perfect things in this world where it can satisfy the unlimited human desire.
I agree! my batchmates (at work) all uses Xperia waterproof phones from Z to Z3 but they wouldn't even let me pour water into their phone they are all afraid it may get damaged ???

On battery life...samsung simply could've just included a larger battery instead of chasing after Iphone to beat their slimness and of course fixed software bugs which contribute to poor battery life.
I think samsung can achieve much better battery life with software fixes, it isn't that bad, also you can always use fast charging or a powerbank

But the slimness of the Samsung S6 is what attracted me to the phone (Was a diehard HTC fan before and was going to go LG). I also don't have a problem with battery life, I always get more than a full day of use (charge in the evening between 8-10pm, turn-off charger and use until following day).
Regarding the SD card, I also prefer the high speed of UFS over larger size. Even when I use phones with removable SD cards, I have always carried either OTG SD card reader or OTG doube head USB drive (so I can connect to computers). I wouldn't want to take out my SD card that has all my files on it and connect it to someone elses computer to transfer files or make print outs (90% of the time when I want to transfer files off of my phone).

While I agree with everything here except the SD opinion about slowing the phone down and affecting battery which is nonsense, and the waterproofing which is easy to do and a very useful feature especially on holiday, do we really need a thread telling us what we already know? Of course we have fast charging, but how does that help anyone who's battery is running out when they are out and about? Bigger battery would of been better. Although battery life is comparable with every phone i've had barring Xperia Z3. Powerbanks are a great idea but look stupid hanging out of the bottom of your phone when you're making a call.
I totally agree with you. When I was purchasing I was in doubt about needing the good old fashioned samsung features but.. I just dont need it anymore! I feel perfect with my s6 the way it is. Battery is optimised for a day of full usage and if you need more juice you can charge it up really quickly (clap to samsung, it really takes just a few minutes of fast charging to get a lot of juice) or just have a battery bank with you: these "little" guys are the future, there is a big variety, from smaller and lighter ones to bigger and heavier. I have 2 of them, 1 small 2300mah 1,5 A of output and 1 big guy with 20000mah and 2 usb outs, 1 of 2,1 A and the other 2,4 A and thats amazing!
Water resistant? Come on, the best you can do with a "water resistant" phone is keeping it half a hour at half a meter of water....wooow really useful.
Come on.
I heard good things from Aukey Portable Battery 10000mAh (http://www.amazon.com/Aukey-10000mA...?ie=UTF8&qid=1435617316&sr=8-2&keywords=aukey)
It's cheap, supports QUICK CHARGE (the only one in the industry currently for a portable charger), and it can charge S6 up to 2 and a half times
Regarding the waterproof thing, I'm guessing no one uses their phones outside? Where it rains? I've lost the use of a phone by getting caught out in the rain before. I'm not saying all phones have to be waterproof, but as the technologies are improving, it wouldn't hurt to see it become more common. Oh, and how many of us have had the heart pounding moment when someone spills a drink?

you know getting caught in a rain storm scenario probably isn't the best example with waterproof argument with this phone, besides the fact who stands outside when it rains and talks on their phone unless they are no where around buildnings, their car or trees. Besides that the ports that are affected by water the most is on the bottom of your phone, which means it would have to rain from the ground up to affect it. Also they make little rubber stoppers that you can plug your headphone jack and charging ports with that would help this even more. I personally think unless your planning on taking a swim with your phone the water proof for most people is over rated. I know other scenarios could happen as accidents always do when you least expect them but that's what insurance/ protection plans is for.

You don't actually have to be using you phone for rain to be a problem some of us don't drive and have to walk a lot. If an unexpected storm appears, you can get incredibly wet!! The phone that got damaged that I mentioned, was in my pocket. Walking home from work. It is only about 10-15 to walk, too. But the rain was so heavy, when I got home, it looked like I'd been swimming fully dressed.
Let's not forget the buttons, sim slot, microphone and earpiece that are in the upper part of the phone too
I'm not saying that it's common, but from experience, it can happen

Xperia X Compact secretly waterproof?

Hi guys,
I have read that Xperia X and X Compact might be secretely watrerproof. Of course it makes no sense to me and it sounds dumb. Anyway, I have performed a pressure test on my X Compact and actually the results are quite similar to those from Z3 Compact, so maybe there is a grain of truth in these rumors. What do you think guys?
i think there maybe be some true about it, i think a least water resistant he is. The reason sony could be not saying is water proof is to avoid the warranty for water damage, as it cannot be defined as to be hardware fault (bad glue) or due to the user making unintended use (submersion on unclean water, over the time or profundity, leaving the cover open).
For me what favor being water proof, 1- the pressure test; 2- the sim/SD slot having a ruber closing similar to the Z cover model;
Also if you look at the fingerprint sony did input it on the phone and leave it unused.
But how knows the best way would be for someone to do a submersion test, but who wants to do it?
Sony Xperia X Compact in Pepsi Cola
also take a look at the teardown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMfvUJBUWOc it seams to have a glue similar to the olders Z's the usb has a rubber around, earphone jack is glued (mighty be just to fixate) uper speaker is also glued and lower one has a cover similar to the older model (seams like a number one thing) the buttons it dindt show but they seam fixated to the body
It is possible that it's waterproof but for more cost savings they didn't pay to get it certified. All we need is for someone to test it...
My understanding is that the Japanese version is IP rated, while other regions were not. I'm still not planning on testing that theory, but there's a lot of evidence (including anecdotal) that this may be true.
Just tried on my X Compact [pressure sensor test: 993 -> 1002 Millibar].
It works perfectly under water.
No damage after.
It only needs some minutes for the mic to dry completely.
Video on youtube, search for "sony xperia x compact underwater call".

Lets not forget the U.S version wasn't supposed to have a fingerprint reader so the comment about certification could be true, add this and the other video to the equation and it seems like we do have water proofing.

Fair enough.
Just made another video where the aqueduct water is evident.
Like before, I'm still not allowed to post URLs, so, search on youtube for
"sony xperia x compact waterproofing".
Edit:
changed youtube video description to
"sony xperia x compact waterproof - evident aqueduct water"
i think sony just doesnt want to deal with any water problems so they say it's not waterproof so if someone's phone gets water damaged they don't need to take responsibilities. but they made it waterproof because that way it can share parts (SIM tray, charging port, headphone jack etc.) with other devices and don't need to order extra parts
sorry wrong post, can delete
