OTG Working on 2015 Fire (kffowi/ford) - Fire General

What is otg?
USB On-The-Go, often abbreviated to USB OTG or just OTG, is a specification first used in late 2001 that allows USB devices, such as digital audio players or mobile phones, to act as a host, allowing other USB devices, such as USB flash drives, digital cameras, mice, or keyboards, to be attached to them.

Required: OTG Cable
Amazon Link: Micro-USB 3.0 OTG Adapter
Amazon Link: USB 2.0 OTG Cable
These are just some examples of cables available, there maybe better, or cheaper options
What is a OTG cable
When attached to a PC, an OTG device requires a cable which has a USB Standard-A plug on one end and a Micro-B plug on the other end. In order to attach a peripheral to an OTG device, the peripheral either needs a cable ending in a Micro-A plug, which is inserted into the OTG device's Micro-AB receptacle, or the OTG device itself needs an adapter cable with a Micro-A plug on one end and a Standard-A receptacle on the other. The adapter cable enables any standard USB peripheral to be attached to an OTG device. Attaching two OTG devices together requires either a cable with a Micro-B plug at one end and a Micro-A plug at the other, or can be achieved using a combination of the PC cable and adapter cable.

Not in most cases, some usb devices may require an otg app to change settings

Thanks for your hard work on root/recovery. I was planning to try OTG print to USB printer tonight. I'll update here tonight after I get home and try it.

USB Serial adapter working here; FTDI chipset

Do you know if it matters if cable is usb 2.0 or 3.0 or are both supported?

I just wanted to report that when I connect an USB stick to the Fire (5.0.1) and try to use ES File Explorer to browse through its files, the Fire force-restarts.
Using Solid Explorer there's no such issue

OTG worked perfectly on 5.1.1 (rooted) using this drive. Same with a generic (cheap) OTG dongle similar to this. Plug-n-play.

An app is needed as far as I know. I haven't actually used it for anything, was just testing what works. Tested with the "UsbWebCamera" app. There are also apps that will stream the usb webcam from your Fire to another device. I could think of a couple nice uses for a usb webcam. Cheap car rear view camera, constantly recording car dash cam (record to a SanDisk high endurance video monitoring microSD). Personally I wouldn't drive without a dash cam. Too many crazy drivers who will swear they weren't texting while they ran right into you.

Has anyone found out if this tablet supports OTG while charging?

It does not appear to support OTG + charging.

I believe a kernel modification could make this work.... I am looking into it, but I really have little idea of where to begin; A $50 tab for (semi)permanent car install would be incredible

[Q] Is is possible to use a mouse with CM7.2?

Exactly what the title says. I was wanting to connect a mouse to my Nook to make using Mini vMac MUCH easier to use.
Yep!
Yeah, absolutely. Download Nook Tweaks from the market, enable usb host from there, plug in a micro-usb to usb-female connector and you're good to go. I run a small usb branch with keyboard and mouse from in using this setup.
As to Bluetooth, I think there are some compatible mice, check this thread;

Thanks! Now I just need to get a cable. Do I need to get one of the OTG cables, or will just any cable work?

I think any cable will work, I just used an adapter and ordinary cable. But you may need to use a hub. I had to to make my flash drive work.

I'm pretty sure a Bluetooth mouse will also work (within the Nooks short range)

Yeah BT mouse/kb work, no need with the hassle of hub and what not.
Does someone feel like testing Mini vMac with a mouse for me before I go out and buy a bluetooth mouse or find a cable?

Whats the Usb for?

I have not seen or heard what the micro usb will be used for on the NP....
The ADT-1 has a USB port and all it can be used for is a keyboard/mouse currently. I'd kill for OTG support. That said though, the ADT-1 also comes with a splitter for the power that adds an additional USB port to connect to your computer to access it via the SDK. So, it could be very much the same setup, or something completely different.
Interesting... You would think they would list the use for it.. maybe these OTG cables i have will come in handy..
It's been said that usb to ethernet adapters will work.

[Q] things to buy

I have my NP coming next week! Now I need to know what I should order to go with it. Should I get a USB hub for it? Can I use the Logitech k400 if I wanted? Can I plug a 1TB HDD in somehow to play my movies? My computer recently died so my plex server is down :/
I'd like to change ROMs on the device too.. So please advise. Thank you!

Get an adapter cable from micro USB to USB female. Then get a powered USB hub - the passive ones probably won't be able to drive your HDD.
With Kodi, you won't need the PC-based server!
Lots of choices for a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse. I use my Logitech diNovo Mini.
I would recommend the Inateck HB4003 Gigabit Ethernet & 3 Port USB 3.0 Hub. It has the micro usb adapter built into it as well as an ethernet port & a hub. If you want to use your TV remote instead of the nexus player, I would recommend getting a FLIRC usb adapter as well.
Thanks for the ideas! I'm really pumped lol.. Kodi sounds like a perfect fit for me. Are there any restrictions on hard drive size that can be connected?

My mistake, you are right. Its has been so long ago since I put together my setup. I forgot that I also have a HooToo (HT-CT01) Micro USB OTG + 4 port charging hub as part of my setup (used to charge my cell phone, tablet, & game controllers). You will need a micro usb OTG cable if you go with the HB4003.
Regardless of which OTG cable you go with, make sure that it is a straight cable for OTG. If the otg device is a right/left angle cable or a short adapter, it won't work because of how scrunched the cables are.

I chose the adapter to reduce clutter & reduce my millions of wire behind my TV. The way I see it, having one less USB connected device is one less thing to diagnose (I am always flashing roms & plugging & unplugging devices to the USB hub.
Hmm is this a viable option?

Yeah, but now having a ssd to increase userdata space is a valid method, it changes a limitation of the NP. For me personally I'll just hide away the clutter.

This is what I have. Click here for my review on XDA. However, there is only 1 USB port that is connected to the OTG. The remaining 4 ports are for charging purposes only. If you need more than 1 USB port fort OTG purposes & possibly an ethernet port, I would get the HooToo and the Inateck.
The way mine is wired is:
Nexus player ---> Micro USB Cable (provided) ---> USB extension cable (OTG cable is short and wanted to hide the hub) ---> HooToo Hub (back HooToo USB OTG port) ---> Inateck Hub (Front of HooToo Hub)

There is a method to my madness! It makes more sense when you see my setup.
My setup:
1x Harmony Smart Hub (USB Powered)
1x Winegard LNA-200 Boost XT Digital HDTV Preamplifier (USB Powered)
2x Micro USB Cables (Charging Tablet & Phone)
The Hootoo hub allows me to charge/power all 4 devices using 1 power brick instead of 4 individual power bricks. Having a functioning OTG was icing on the cake.

Yes, that sounds right (make sure it says OTG). Is your 1TB HDD self-powered or is it powered through the USB port? If it is self-powered, it should work. I just plugged up my spare 1TB Fantom Self-Powered (power brick) HDD to see if it works and it seems to be okay. If it is not self-powered, it may be ymmv.
I have two HDDs actually. Both 1TB but one was in my desktop and I'd just order a powered enclosure for and the other is a western digital mobile drive without power.
So I'm pretty sure I'll go micro otg > inateck> powered HDD and Logitech K400.. That's really all I can see I'd use really. My TV is on the other side of the room. So not like I'll be walking over there much.
I'm stoked!

Why not plug the hdd into your router? It'll be accessible everywhere, easier to add/delete files on it.
My router is an older N 300 Cisco.. Sadly I've got no USB support for something like that atm. I'm looking into a router upgrade though. But the one I have has worked well for about 2 years now.

Certainly something to consider.
But seriously, if all you're going to put on that hdd is media, plugging it into your PC and sharing it works the same as plugging it into a router (only bad point is that your PC needs to be switched on for the hdd to be accessible). If you're going to be plugging/unplugging your hdd from your Nexus Player just to add files, it gets old pretty fast.

Does xperia x compact support OTG ?

I change my phone to xperia x compact recently, I find the type-c USB is easy to use.
I have a otg usb drive with micro usb, which is working on samsung s7, dell tablet. I wonder if it can be used on XC.

Not sure about your micro USB OTG drive, but I purchased a separate OTG type-C adapter which connects to my USB card reader just fine.

Even this doesn't work for me. My phone seems not being able to act as USB host and not recognising anything plugged in the type-c port. My phone is rooted, not sure if it's the cause.
I use the sony type-c dual flash drive and it works flawlessly
Still not working. I used a voltage reader and found that there is no voltage coming out of the USB port, no wonder it won't detect anything. No sure if my phone is faulty (doubt it, as the port works perfectly when it is USB client) or due to setting/rom/kernel...

USB OTG a few things tested...

I've no idea if this will be of interest to any of you, especially those people who have yet to buy a 5t and are trying weigh up the pros and cons, but USB OTG is something I use all the time, so o it was one of the first things I tested when I got mine. So far I'm really pleased as everything I wanted to work does so. My last device, a Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, had very poor USB OTG implementation so this is great from my point of view. Maybe I'm behind the times and I had the last phone on the planet with that problem - if so, please delete this mods
First off, before you can use USB OTG, you need to head into settings, then advanced and check the OTG setting. It turns off after ten minutes so I created a link on my homepage using Nova launcher's activity widget menu.
*EDIT* As ny-hardcore has kindly pointed out below, you can also have an OTG quick toggle in notification area. This didn't work for me at first (or I was hitting the wrong thing), but now it does .
Tested and working:
USB card readers of various types, including micro USB readers, with the help of a USB C to Micro USB adapter (5 for £4 on eBay!). The only one that didn't work is a proprietary Samsung multi card reader that also has a full sized USB output and HDMI out too. This isn't very surprising of course, but they're to be avoided if you see one on eBay and assume it's a generic adapter.
80 GB iPod hard drive in a cheap enclosure bought via Amazon.
1 TB 2.5" Western Digital HDD - that's right, no USB hub required, just plug it straight in. The only other portable device I've owned could power it was a Samsung tablet.
2 mega pixel boroscope (using USB Camera app in Play Store) . So useful for finding slow water leaks under the floor or peering down a spark plug hole into a cylinder!!
Micro USB DVB TV dongle, via adapter.
Keyboards and mice via an OTG adapter, including a combination media keyboard with built in trackball mouse (this usually doesn't work on my phones for some reason). The UK keyboard layout is supported via settings so you can have a £ key - woohoo!
Other phones! I plugged my old phone in and discovered I could mount it in MTP mode and then browse its contents from the built in file explorer. For what it's worth, the Oneplus even charges the device that's connected to it.
When you need to eject the device there's a button that appears in the notification area. Sometimes this gets obscured, so swipe down a second time and the 'eject' will appear.
I haven't tried any game controllers yet, but so far the support has been so comprehensive I don't see why there would be a problem.
In the attached photo, the only thing that doesn't work is the black coloured multi purpose card reader on the far right.
In quick toggles you can add an otg switch.
You don't have to go in settings that way to enable otg.

Thanks, for some reason that just didn't work for me unless I went into settings/advanced as well. I can't recall which firmware I was on at the time and I haven't tried since The quick toggles are so far away for my little hands too (please Oneplus add a Xiaomi one handed mode - in fact, make it EXACTLY like Xiaomi devices).
LOL, typical, now it does work for me! I was probably pressing flight mode by mistake or something.
Just FYI, I've tried the following USB DACs with an OTG cable on my 5T and they appear to work:
- Fiio E17
- Meridian Explorer (v1)
- Audioquest Dragonfly (v1)
I just discovered my old Saitek X35/X36 throttle/joystick combo works too! That's a first for one of my Android devices too. Now I need something fun to test it with

Has anyone gotten USB sound cards to work *for recording*.
Like I have a Terratec Aureon USB MkII and would like to livestream my DJ sets to Facebook via the FB app, by hooking up the line-out on my decks to the line-in on a soundcard hooked up to my phone and have the streamed video use the soundcard instead of the internal mic which sounds rubbish.
Edit: Tried it, and yes it works, but you have to hook up to the mic port, not the line in, and this doesn't seem like a great idea. Any idea how to change it?
Edit2: Scratch that, phone rebooted itself during a longer test

That would be so cool if you can get it working. Wonder if it's the phone or the Terratec? I have NO experience in that area. Good luck! How much power does it draw? Would a powered USB hub in the mix help?
Hadn't thoughtof the power draw issue.
What I really need is a super cheap low power USB line-in of some sort. Though after further testing, FB live streaming is crap, with low quality audio and video in all the configurations I tried (Android app, Win10+Firefox, Win10 app) so I'm probably going to abandon this plan and try a different platform like Youtube or something.

1 X USB C OTG adapter with micro SD card reader built in.
All of the above work. In the case of the micro USB OTG adapters, I'm using a USB C to Micro USB adapter (they're tiny, about 2 CM long).
In short, every USB OTG adapter I've put in it works. All are unbranded, generic adapters that I've bought from Amazon or eBay. I've never had to do anything more than enable OTG in settings.
Could it be something to do with the ROM you're using?
In the attached photo, the ones with a yellow Mark are micro USB OTG adapters. The one with a red mark is a USB C multi card reader (built in USB OTG). The one with a blue mark is a USB C to Micro USB adapter.

Sadly what you're doing is way beyond anything I've tried. I'm happy when I can get card readers and stuff to work
I vaguely recall reading about specifications for the older micro USB ports on phones and what type of power output they supported - not all were equal. For example, there were a bunch of Samsung phones and tablets that could power hard drives without needing a powered USB hub inline. Similarly, some could power an MHL connection to a TV without the adapter being plugged into a charger like most phones that supported MHL had to. I've forgotten the name for these specs, but presumably USB C is exactly the same and it'll be online somewhere. No idea what your Terratec draws or if that could be the problem - if our phones can spin a 1 TB hard drive then perhaps it's not an issue, I was just clutching at straws.
Good luck!

4.7.4 Stock. Stock recovery too (not rooted either).
USB OTG worked on stock 4.7.2 as well.
Working fine for me, stock, custom roms etc. Use a cableconnection usb/otg cable 6" in length. Just enable OTG in the swipe down, plus USB stick in...no problems.
I gave up on using the phone for this because the audio quality via the FB app is terrible anyway, so I nicked my GF's Windows laptop and started using OBS for streaming instead.
Power aside, it's awesome that an external sound card will work (kinda) for recording though!.

Thanks for the reply, I am beginning to think that it kind of an issue with OOS 4.7.5, I have to flash the old version and try my luck on it.
