Sony Xperia Z5 was disassembled - Xperia Z5 General

Finally, i know how does Sony Xperia Z5 touch ID work at this teardown blog plus the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VznyxLBDccU

i think it's fair to assume you lose the IP68 rating when you crack it open?

Yep. But this sticker from the source link gives me some hope - YMMV!

Great, it seems so easy to just replace the camera module, cant wait till they can sell just that.

Xperia Z vs ZL: Which will you get (or have)

As the title states which would you get and why?
For me, I'm having trouble deciding.. Both are great and extremely similar. I love the waterproof Z. I would totally use it in the shower to text and such. Yet, It's not totally necessary for me to have and I'm loving the look and the compactness of the ZL. Decisions
On another note, Sony's finally doing it right, eh? :victory:
Z. The ZL seems like a dumbed down version even tho its specs are the same of course.

I think they've been pretty spot on since the takeover (mostly). Liked my S.
ZL of course! I love the small form factor
ZL all the way, I was sold when I compared my Xperia T to the ZL at CES. I don't need the water resistant since I've never been stupid to hold my phone over water and drop it, also I use headphones a lot, so the cover would annoy me. The reason that really made me sell my T for the ZL was the screen size, .5 inch screen size bigger than my T and being almost the same size phone?. That was a no brainer for me. Also the thin bezel makes the phone look that much amazing.

Rain ? Water splash from a car ? Spilled drink ? It's not just for dropping it into water
Anyway, I got the Z because i love the design. ZL is almost identical but i wanted waterproofing and glass back. Luckily this helped me to decide - otherwise I might have considered ZL because of it's slightly smaller build.
There is one reason why I want ZL - camera button.

I've been through so many phones in my life and never had water damage on any of them (knock on wood). I can live without water resistant for for a smaller phone, camera button, better notification light.
Definitely getting the ZL. Compact 5" with shutter key is my choice. Waterproof is not that important to me. To add that those flaps covers the usb port etc are annoying.

I am getting Z.
"Swyped" From My X10Mini Running SevenBean Stable3
if it's between Z or ZL - I will go for ZL. camera button and compact size
i'm confused can't decide.
i like the look of the z but still like others said because of the compactness of the zl i'm leaning towards it. hopefully i won't spill anything on the zl
anyways. z will get launched on 6th in my country and the zl maybe after a month. will compare demo units and make a decision.

How to take pictures with xperia z under water?

Xperia Z is a water proof phone that can be used under water. But can its touch screen be used underwater too?
The answer is a big NO! You simply can not use Xperia Z’s touch screen under water whether you want to do anything on your phone.
Why Touch Screen Functionality Doesn’t Work Under Water?
Is it Sony’s manufacturing fault? NO! This is not a fault of Sony, it’s because water conducts electricity.
What functions can be performed?
Play a music before putting it in water, it will not stop
Record Sound
Use Flashlight while making sure its on before going under water
Photography can not be done as it requires touching the screen
What should you do if you want to take a photograph underwater?
As we all very well know that Xperia Z doesn’t have a hardware camera button to take photos so the answer is simple. Set a Timer to take the photo. An alternate method can be to install any other camera app from app store like Camera 360 that lets you set volume buttons as a Camera hardware button to take photos.

WHY would one want to use this phone to take pictures under water? It is NOT designed with that function in mind. Please do read the manual that came with your XZ before you bugger it up then write here blasting the phone!

I thought it says it can survive under water of up to 1 metre for 30 minutes. So why not have some fun photo takings under water? If not its kind of pointless buying this phone.
Sent from my Xperia Z
The phone is a water resistant phone not a water proof phone
The real idea is for it to survive every day life like getting caught out in the rain, dropping it in the bath or swimming pool
Using buttons under water would certainly risk water ingress
And swimming with it would be a risk, and the warranty does not cover water damage

sigh...it's always the same...people mistake waterresistant with waterproof.
just because an airbag might save your life in case of a car-crash, you don't drive into a wall on purpose, do you?
waterresistance is your airbag in case your phone gets dropped into water or s.th. like that.

I have been saying EXACTLY the same thing here for months only to be met by general abuse by some owners who are clueless regarding this mobiles water resistance. The water and dust resistance are in case of accidental contact and not to be confused with an industrial made device with underwater capabilities by design..
What ticks me of is when I read threads where owners have the temerity to complain about the XZ when it is damaged due to use in a sauna or after being boiled in soup!
Several posters here have actually copied and attached the Sony guidelines that clearly show what the mobile cannot be exposed to yet some still persist in abusing a domestic phone and thinking the XZ is water proof when it is water resistant and not designed to function under water only survive ACCIDENTAL contact.
I have also said numerous times that its an awful shame that some owners appear to lack the same level of intelligence that the XZ posses!
Have you seen some of the Youtube 'tests'.....more money than sense, take a look at the chocolate clip! Absolutely absurd behaviour.

I agree. If you want to possibly destroy your own phone by placing it in situations it wasn't designed to cope with then go ahead. That is your choice.
But don't give people the wrong advice regarding THEIR phone. The only correct answer to give regarding questions on the water resistance of this device is what is written in the manual. End of story.

I think we would do better trying to pee in the corner of a barrel! I wrote months ago here, when the mobile was released, that we would soon find owners doing the most ill advised things with the XZ due, in part, to Sony's own un wise advertising campaign
It beggars all belief what some people are doing with the XZ. It also beggars belief that after they do these puerile things they come here and write posts complaining about the mobile!.
We have seen them taken into saunas, swimming pools, the sea, lakes, diving, jet skies, cooked in chocolate and boiled in soup? I do ponder what sort of person has the money and total lack of intellect to do some of the things they do with a domestic mobile phone.
Some of the complaints are absolutely absurd. Deliberately dropping the phone onto a concrete floor from various heights to see how many drops it takes before the glass breaks. Hitting it with a lump hammer? Certifiable behaviour.
What can one do?
im using cm10.1 on my z, cm10.1 camera can use power button as shutter

Actually, it is Sony's fault.
The up-coming Galaxy S4 Active has a screen that will function underwater, so the fact the Z's screen doesn't is simply a reflection of Sony's choice of parts.
As for the comments about how the phone is only water-resistant 'just in case' it gets splashed and that people are reckless to willingly submerge their handsets, that's ridiculous.
The handset is IP57 rated, that guarantees it will survive submersion to a depth of up to 1m for up to 30mins, provided an owner doesn't exceed that they are doing nothing wrong.
IPX rating is there to ensure the phone doesn't get water damaged. Nowhere does this rating mentions that the said device will work normally when submerged. Its just to protect its body and nothing else.
As for taking underwater photos and video with Z, Sony never advertised this nor mentioned it so please don't point fingers at Sony. You simply cannot keep your expectations in check.
The ZR gets a camera button and also has a higher IP rating than the Z. Sony is advertising underwater photography because of the simple fact that the ZR is designed in a way for it.

Our u can chose the camera timer...
As you said, it's not Sony's fault - but it would be nice to introduce power button shutter and "underwater mode" to our XZ Camera app - or at least, explain why it's not possible - if it truly isn't possible or shouldn't be done. I personally don't care about that - but there are tons of people that do.
I dont really get it. I can use the screen of my Xperia Z underwater. Are there different models out ?

Here in the Netherlands, they actually show posters with the phone dipped in the water. In the stores there were bowls filled with water where you were able to put it in and I have also seen real life women (sounds nerdy) in showers at the stores, using a XZ.
Maybe they never intended to advertise it like this, but I can defenitely accept why people use it that way.

Sony Xperia X Premium reportedly coming with HDR display

Wow, this explains a lot about why there's no 4K Video Recording and only 3GB RAM on this device.
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_x_premium_reportedly_coming_with_hdr_display-news-17838.php
Meh. I think this is just a fanmade rumour that will never come true or a fake news.
GSMArena is a pretty legit source, they must believe it in some manner if they posted it up.
I think it's true, I find it hard to believe that Sony would skip out on the high end market this entire year.
White paper
Sony mobile makes its "white papers" available, and according to that the screen only supports 16,777,216 rather than over a billion as specified in the HDR specification. It also includes a 'Micro USB support' rather than USB-C, unfortunately. So for me that means I'll be waiting the new wave of Sony phones out until they can meet our modern demands. Also, I miss my glass back :crying:

Use a case? Lol. You do realize if you drop a aluminum phone it can spin and Crack the front glass as well without a case. Risk is just slightly lower but you'll sent the phone which is as bad as a Crack imo.

Call me "outdated", but for me that's ridiculous.
You can argue if you should get 720p or 1080p (on < 5"), but 4K and 120hz? For real? They should rather try to invest in a good battery life. Sony tbh managed it in the Z1-Z3 era. With my old Z2 I had almost 1 1/2 Days of battery with like 8-9h Display on. That's amazing. Not some gimmickry like 4K, HDR, 120hz and stuff.
Yea, the new devices have QuickCharge, but still. a longer lasting battery would be better in my eyes.

Xperia X Compact secretly waterproof?

Hi guys,
I have read that Xperia X and X Compact might be secretely watrerproof. Of course it makes no sense to me and it sounds dumb. Anyway, I have performed a pressure test on my X Compact and actually the results are quite similar to those from Z3 Compact, so maybe there is a grain of truth in these rumors. What do you think guys?
i think there maybe be some true about it, i think a least water resistant he is. The reason sony could be not saying is water proof is to avoid the warranty for water damage, as it cannot be defined as to be hardware fault (bad glue) or due to the user making unintended use (submersion on unclean water, over the time or profundity, leaving the cover open).
For me what favor being water proof, 1- the pressure test; 2- the sim/SD slot having a ruber closing similar to the Z cover model;
Also if you look at the fingerprint sony did input it on the phone and leave it unused.
But how knows the best way would be for someone to do a submersion test, but who wants to do it?
Sony Xperia X Compact in Pepsi Cola
also take a look at the teardown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMfvUJBUWOc it seams to have a glue similar to the olders Z's the usb has a rubber around, earphone jack is glued (mighty be just to fixate) uper speaker is also glued and lower one has a cover similar to the older model (seams like a number one thing) the buttons it dindt show but they seam fixated to the body
It is possible that it's waterproof but for more cost savings they didn't pay to get it certified. All we need is for someone to test it...
My understanding is that the Japanese version is IP rated, while other regions were not. I'm still not planning on testing that theory, but there's a lot of evidence (including anecdotal) that this may be true.
Just tried on my X Compact [pressure sensor test: 993 -> 1002 Millibar].
It works perfectly under water.
No damage after.
It only needs some minutes for the mic to dry completely.

Lets not forget the U.S version wasn't supposed to have a fingerprint reader so the comment about certification could be true, add this and the other video to the equation and it seems like we do have water proofing.

Like before, I'm still not allowed to post URLs, so, search on youtube for
"sony xperia x compact waterproofing".
Edit:
changed youtube video description to
"sony xperia x compact waterproof - evident aqueduct water"
i think sony just doesnt want to deal with any water problems so they say it's not waterproof so if someone's phone gets water damaged they don't need to take responsibilities. but they made it waterproof because that way it can share parts (SIM tray, charging port, headphone jack etc.) with other devices and don't need to order extra parts
sorry wrong post, can delete

From what I understand, it is not rated.
Not waterproof and no more splash resistant than any other normal phone.
Major bummer for me, I was going to order otherwise.
There have been PLENTY of phones come out that ARE IP68 rated but did not officially rate it. It's entirely possible it just hasn't been either A. Rated or B. been reported yet. I think more time will tell on the subject.
They are waiting for official rating and they will share.

Since the first digit is dust protection, the second water, there may be no difference between IP57 and IP67 as regards water resistance.
(I say "may" because the ratings define a range, so different devices with the same rating will both be within the minimum and maximum protection covered by that range, but may not be the same).
I'm still rocking my Nexus 6, which also was never officially rated for any water resistance. However, despite having no official rating, the device was fine being submerged for hours on end. Hopefully this phone will be similar. There are several youtube videos of people submerging the n6 for extended periods of time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxiRSDF0Ke0

It's very strange there is no response from the company on this. I'd actually be surprised if the phone isn't at least splash resistant as the blog from Rubin talked about the phone being able to survive "the elements"
After getting a hands on yesterday at the NYC event... The sentiment i got was it is semi-resistant but they will not warranty it as such. Splashes and other accidents it could survive. heard some stories from people. Also i saw one working unit fall from above pocket height on cement tiles and it did not have a mark on it. Take that for what you will.
With the news breaking about Sony's settlement, I think it's smart for Essential to not risk publishing IP ratings. It prevents warranty claims that could cripple a start up. We'll find out how water resistant it is when somebody does a tear down or a water dunk test.
I'm always surprised by the volume of people that want this! I've never worried about it!
Why is it craved so much (genuine question)

As long as it doesn't die if it gets a little splash I'll be fine. Im not dumb enough to use it around a body of water.
