Squaretrade vs Nexus Protect - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I didn't purchase Nexus Protect when I bought my phone and, according to Google, the only way to get it is to return and repurchase. Or, I can get a square trade warranty. Thoughts?

You can get Square Trade.
I've used them on plenty of items.
I've filed claims on two different items.
One was a tablet and they refunded the price.
The other was a camera and they sent me a refurb replacement that has been flawless.

Does Squaretrade have a limit on replacements like Nexus Protect only allows 2 incidents in 2 years?

I, too, purchased a squaretrade warranty. Makes absolutely zero sense why nexus protect can't be added within the return period.

Does anyone have an opinion regarding SquareTrade vs Nexus Protect? Should I go through the hassle of returning the phone and buying a new one just to get the Nexus Protect?

I honestly don't think Nexus Protect is worth it. It carries a nasty deductible.

Any expensive phone insurance does unless you pay more upfront...

I just get square trade $5 a month and cancel once I get next years Nexus.

I looked at it this way
2 years of verizon insurance @$8 a month is $192, nexus protect is about 1/2 price. Verizon to replace a device is over $100.
The pros of VZW is it covers lost/stolen phone and up to 2 insurance damage/stolen/lost replacements a year if needed Cons of VZW insurance price and deductible price and they can't cover a device not bought from VZW
The pros of NP are lower price and deductible than carrier insurance. The cons of NP is it doesn't cover lost/stolen phones. Only covers 2 replacements FOR TWO YEARS.
So I looked at NP and Square trade and went with nexus protect since their pricing was similar

I'm considering this choice right now since I didn't buy Nexus Protect when I bought my phone and Google won't let me add it now (I tried; got nowhere with their customer support). My concern with Squaretrade is that if they have to replace your phone, they won't replace it with a Nexus 6P but with a "comparable" phone. Does anyone know if that's the case? I really don't want to go through the hassle of returning my phone and buying a new one just to add Nexus Protect. But on the other hand, in the event that I have to file a claim, I don't want to be told that I'll receive a Galaxy Note or whatever instead of a Nexus 6P.
As an aside, Google's policy of not allowing customers to add Nexus Protect during their return window makes absolutely no sense. Returning my phone and buying a new one is a hassle for me and a waste of resources for Google, since it results in a wasted new unit. Lose-lose situation.

Yeah that seems a bit odd on googles part. I was planning on going with squaretrade just been trying to find a coupon to get it a bit cheaper , havent had much luck getting one lol

(Q) nexus 7 insurance

Hey peeps! I'm getting a nexus 7 and I'm wondering of anyone is getting insurance on their device. I know it has the manufactures warranty but it doesn't cover things an insurance policy would. I'm thinking to get it insured.... .

I don't even know if you can just for something that costs $199. If you could, I don't think it'd be worth it. In my case, it would fall under my renter's insurance--although IIRC my deductible is around $200.
It's £60 here for an extended 2 year warranty including damage, not worth it for a £190 tablet.

I wonder if it would be covered through Homeowners insurance.
You can take it to best buy and buy a protection warranty. Only thing is, for a tablet like this it costs 199.99. WTF! I'm not paying another 200 on top of the 250 I just paid. That's like paying for a $450 iP*d (had to censor or I would get killed ;p )
"extra" insurance is always a scam. (i'm talking for Europe). First you pay about 25%+ insurance fees and in case something happens you will pay "own risk/excess" and documentation costs. In many cases you'll pay within a year the full amount you need for replacing when something happens.
Never get extra insurance for something you can afford to buy a new one. Much cheaper in the long run!
What about a place like SquareTrade? They seem to offer good warranty for decent pricing
I just got a quote for a $279 tablet for $27 two year warranty.....

It should be. Check with your agent to be sure. Also check what your deductible is.
At least with my insurance, if I'd drop it and the screen would break, it would be covered. Some extended warranties will not cover, um, "user error" like that. In general extended warranties are a scam and a MASSIVE money maker for places like Best Buy.

Square Trade's warranty's are awesome. My wife dropped her iPad 2 on a tile floor and shattered the screen. Square trade sent a padded box by next day air and paid for next day air shipping both ways. We got the box, they got it next day, it was repaired and returned on the same day the got it. We received a repaired iPad 2 in 3 days and it didn't cost us a dime extra.

so you're saying there is not deductible? and just pay roughly 25 bucks for 2 years of warranty?
I dropped my Transformer and cracked the screen about 2 weeks after I bought it. SquareTrade couldn't replace the glass within 7 days (this was when the Transformer first came out) so they sent me a check for $450 for replacement. I did have the accident insurance on it, and they were really great to work with. - sheureka

Insurance for the Nexus 4

So last year I imported my Galaxy Nexus last year for around $700 but never got around to purchasing a insurance plan for it. Good thing it still in great shape. My Nexus 4 should be here tomorrow and I want to know if anyone knows what the best insurance company is for the nexus 4 is.
$350 in your bank? For $350 why get insurance?
I voided my warranty.

You serious? For ~$100 for insurance and the $50-$150 deductibles why get insurance on a $150. Do the math. If $350 is a lot of money for some people, then why are they buying $350 phones, and some insurance on top that. Start using logic.
I voided my warranty.
SquareTrade is what I use. Since I only buy unlocked devices and use mvno carriers that don't offer insurance. SquareTrade has come in handy... Not sure if they offer service where you live though.
Only issues with a 3rd Party insurance is they can't guarantee a replacement device on something as new as the Nexus 4.

Insurance for the Nexus 4?

Just thinking, I'm not too worried about defects, Google will replace it for that. But reading about the nexus 4s slickness, and people dropping them makes me realize stuff happens. This is why I have insurance on my at&t account, but obviously that isn't going to mean much with a non at&t phone. Any third party companies that offer it?

Squaretrade is ridiculously overpriced given the cost of the n4 and the deductible they charge. Plus they offer cheaper coverage for iPhones which is irritating. Not recommended. If others have found reasonable insurance, I'd be interested.

My current plan through T-mobile is $6 a month with a $130 decuctible. What are you used to paying?

I think it's crap that I can't just pay $30 from square trade for a service plan with accidental coverage. Oh it's a phone. That means you need insurance and not a service plan. Who decides this crap? I got a service plan from square trade when I bought my HTC Flyer and it was $30, and what is a flyer? An oversized Desire HD!
I remember you used to be able to buy a service plan from best buy for a phone if you bought it from them, and now they have bend over and spread em insurance too! Really who decides this crap? Cell phones are pretty much in a class of their own with consumer electronics.
I guess I'll just go insurance free

bumping this in hopes that it gets some action.
i think i am going to get squaretrade before my 30 days are up. one of the things i like is you can cancel at any time and be refunded the rest of your money. or cancel and stop paying your seven bucks a month. you can also transfer it with the phone if you sell it and want to use the insurance as a perk.
has anyone else found anything better?
i just noted in a previous post that my phone just dropped 18" onto a rug with the bumper on and now my glass creaks. its only a matter of time i feel before something worse happens. and who knows... maybe google and lg will start building these things a bit better and with insurance we can swap it out.
I just think it's crap I can get a square trade warranty on a tablet for $30 that doesn't have a monthly fee and offers the exact same coverage but because the device is deemed small enough to be a phone I gotta pay a monthly fee

i completely agree. i wish some hardware replacements would start hitting the market. if i could price out the replacement parts i could weight out the pricing better. but i dont want to go past my 30 days and be forced into buying the parts from the internet when they could very well be pricier.
Check the threads were people have sent their phones back for repair. I'd rather save my money then send it back to LG for repair, if there is something that needs repair. One post I read said it was going to cost $140 to repair the cracked glass. Another one was $153. So paying someone $125 for 2 years and $99 deductible seems like its not worth it. The cost for a one time repair would have to exceed $224 to make it worth it.
This is what I got. Square trade $79.99 for 2 years and a $50 deductible.

I agree. Paying $125 on the chance that I break it and then have to pay another $99, for a total of $224, on a phone I bought for $300, doesn't seem quite worth it.
Of course, that's if it only breaks once. My wife is murder on phones, so figure that she breaks hers, say, three times in two years and that's $125 + $99 x 3 = $422. But then, if LG will repair it for about $150, then those three times only cost me $450, so the difference is still pretty negligible.
I'm going to get us both the Ballistic cases when they are released in a few weeks and hope for the best.

I got Square Trade. They are having a 35% off sale until December 26th.
Transmission sent from my badass Nexus 4.
I've had mixed experiences with Squaretrade. My biggest complaint is that they send your device to a repair depot that can take over a week to fix. In addition, if the repairs exceed the cost of the phone, they keep it.
Also, the last time I used them, they wanted my SIM card (I was having SIM identification problems). I personally refuse to send an active SIM card through the mail. They said that all of their customers are fine with it?
Anyways, I personally don't think it's cost effective to buy insurance for a cell phone at $299-$349. Just keep money aside if it breaks or is lost/stolen.
I'd like to know if any one has used these guys.
http://www.worthavegroup.com/cell-phone-insurance
on paper it seems like a good deal and good coverage... but I'd like to hear some stories about claims being a hassle or not.
I'm content with using SquareTrade as an "Insurance" for my Nexus 4.
SquareTrade: $125+$99=$224 (They even cover shipping)
Buying New Replacement: $349+Shipping
Plus with buying new, you have to take into consideration that the Nexus 4 is nearly impossible to get right now.
So you could be stuck without a phone for months, where with SquareTrade you get one quickly.
And "Part Replacement" is pointless IMO. You might crack the screen, spend $150 for a new screen. But what if you do more damage than just the screen.. more parts to buy
But that's just me. Plus if the phone is not repairable. They give you the full retail cost of the phone at time of purchase.
$79 Plan from SquareTrade the Indian guy from the SquareTrade Customer Service said the Nexus 4 is covered under this plan.
Or $99 Plan from SquareTrade will cover it too, (in case you don't want to take the chance that the $79 plan does not cover it.)

Best Buy Protection, SquareTrade Protection, or Asurion Protection?

Hey guys, I am planning on upgrading to the GS4 next week and am contemplating on where to purchase the device. The location I purchase it is going to be based on the warranty I get. Best Buy has no deductible while Asurion and Square Trade both have deductibles. Has anyone had any experience with filing a claim with either of the companies and/or recommend one over another? Thanks.

Asurion is god awful and you'll have to pay 150-200 (lost my S3 three times) each time.
Square trade is awesome with is extra accidental coverage, one time payment plus there's almost always a nice discount code online to save a bunch. I smashed my tablets screen dropping it and I had the bootloader unlocked with is permanent with Asus and voids the manufacturer warranty but they still ended up replacing it.
Don't know about Best Buy though, have heard it's good though. Definitely recommend SquareTrade though!
dit: And SquareTrade doesn't have a deductible? I'm pretty sure.
EDIT: Never mind lol, there isn't a deductible on tablets but there is on the phones xD Still great though!

Thanks for you reply. Yeah, I thought Square Trade had a deductible. I actually have used Square Trade in the past, and luckily have never had to file a claim. I like the fact that with Best Buy, I can just go into the store. I'm pretty good about not misplacing my phone, so I'm not worried about the lost/stolen feature. I am leaning towards the Best Buy insurance, but I have read mixed reviews on the service/insurance through Best Buy. Some say they are given a hard time when they take their device in, while others say that best buy takes the device and ships it out right away to get fixed.
And Best Buy gives you a loaner while your phone gets fixed. But the lost or stolen part blows. But still leap years better than asurion.

I have used asurion on my Sprint phones and Att phones. In the first 6 months nothing IMO beats asurion.
I rarely keep a device longer than that anyway. It is good to know that if I lose one it is covered for a much smaller cost than buying as replacement. I have had to use my insurance twice after someone else broke my phone, process to file a claim was quick and easy and my replacement arrived next day. I have had an instance where quality of the replacement was below my standards and was sent a suitable replacement.
I have also had Bestbuy insurance and it was OK...just had bad experiences with poorly trained stores, had to wait a few days to two weeks [I hear they have improved that] and now don't buy phones there so not really an option

Best buy is the best. No deductible infinite replacements. And it's a $1 cheaper a month than Assurion. Assurion is $150 deductible and only 3 replacements a year even though you have to pay that much.

Insurance for our Nexii?

I was doing some googling to see if there was any insurance available for our new phones like Asurion which I have on my S6 w/ Verizon.
I came across this site http://www.worthavegroup.com/product/cell-phone-insurance/ and I was wondering if anyone one has used them before.
They cover anything and everything that can happen including lost/theft.
For 1 year of coverage the cost is $64 and has a $50 deductible.
Seems like a great deal just never heard of anyone using them before.

Nope,
You can only insure a phone that Verizon sells in their stores. So you could technically buy someone elses Samsung S5 for example and put it on your line and keep it insured. You just cannot bring a phone that was not sold by VZW and insure it.
If you already have an old phone, you are also eligible for an additional Family plan discount on Square Trade. No experience with these guys, but Square trade has been awesome for me with next day shipping or walk into a store to get most of the issues resolved (For Walk-ins, you dont have to pay any deductible, if you use one of there preferred stores)

I bought through then for my 6p, but I was unable to find an coupon codes that worked. I even signed up a junk email address of mine to get the coupon they send out, and it explicitly said "not valid on smartphone plans" in the fine print.
Squaretrade is great, just understand that they ARE NOT a phone INSURANCE plan, they are a PROTECTION plan.
Insurance covers loss and theft, protection plans only cover damage.
I also got squaretrade with the accidental damage protection. $99 for 2 years with $75 deductible. Covers devices up to $999. Only catch though like the_hustleman says it does not cover loss or theft. Can't really blame them though. That's how they keep great rates. Just keep your phone on you at all times.
Also like Squaretrade for device insurance....
I'm just using one of my savings account as interest. I'm not against insurance. But we should receive at least 50% back or be vested but to pay and get nothing.

What insurance gives you is peace of mind. $99 to join and $75 per incident is doable if I break my phone. Paying another 600 outright ain't happening. and would cost more anyways. That's just how insurance works. You pay a small amount in a pot that can be used by all contributors to the pot in case they need it. You don't get to take your money back out of the pot after 2years just because you did not use it. You were covered for those 2 years.
