picture/color quality on netflix - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so last night i set up my old trusty Nexus 5 and new nexus 6p and watched "The Flash" on netflix. i set them up so they were perfectly synced ... i have to say the crispness and colors on the nexus 5 was MUCH better! the 6P looked not as sharp and the colors were a little washed out. the nexus 5 was very crisp (more detail) and the colors (specially the reds and skin tones) looked a lot more accurate and overall had more "pop".
it was very disappointing, because i was expecting the exact opposite, i will try to post pictures tonight when i get home...
has anyone else noticed this?

Theres a big where HW accelleration uses a reduced RGB range and not the full 0-255.
This is causing videos to look washed out.

theres a big where HW?
theres a big where HW? now i am really confused LOL.
can you please elaborate... is there a fix for this?
thanks
Sam

Is there a fix for this, can it be disabled or anything?

No fix yet. Google will have to provide the fix via an update. Not sure if they have even acknowledged the bug yet though.

[Q] Pixel Quality? Error?

So quick question XDA. I noticed on my HD2 running FroyoStone 3.2 the pixel quality is bad...I wouldn't even say "pixel" cause its just the textures on some things. I took a screenshot of my phone to show you what im talking about but it showed up better quality then it actually is... Confusing right? Well take a look.

The shaded black part behind "Speak now" is actually good quality when i took a screen shot...even though thats not what I see?

This is what I see, Notice how the shading or the black part behind where it says "Speak now" is really bad quality.
Thats not the only thing that has bad quality. When I receive picture messages all the pictures are really bad quality. Also the pictures set for each one my contacts are bad quality. Is this something I can fix? Please and thank you.
If you really see what we can see on the pictures, then a a fix is available.
You only have to wear your glasses
The pictures are really bad. Maybe you should take a look in the manual of the camera and search for "focus" or "autofocus"

Compare the two images. The first one is what i see on my phone when i use it. The second picture is what it should look like.
Also I took the first picture with my moms phone, i sent it to my HD2 without changing the file size. When I received it on my phone it was sent as a 4 KB file and which is a really small size. It does this to EVERY picture I receive. Yet its only when im running android (FroyoStone 3.2)
For example...

I think I worked out what you're saying OP. I just checked mine and it's exactly the same. It's probably due to the 65k colour screen as opposed to 16million colour screens most phones have these days. It's nothing to worry about.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

That's what we think. I don't think anybody has been able to prove/disprove that the HD2's screen is only capable of 65k colors; it could just be a WM limitation, and the devs have yet to 'unlock' the 16mil colors using Android. (Of course, I could be wrong, but like I said there's no proof.)
The problem is the color gradient -- it's easy to detect the low quality of the images due to the gray gradient.
Concerning the MMS sizing, I think I encountered a fix for that, but I haven't tried it. I can't help you look for it now because the sub-forum search is down.

Screen is damn bright!

Screen is a bit too bright for me even on the lowest settting. I remember reading about an app that let's us knock the brightness below the minimum level, ideal for night reading by all accounts.
Can anyone tell me what this app is called? Does it need root?
Thanks.
No root necessary.

Thanks I will give that a go ... not to keen on this bit though :
"Known issues: - Gingerbread: Filter prevents interaction with Gmail. "
Is this the only one available so far?
It's just buggy. It will "turn off" by itself, and yes mostly when you switch to Gmail. Gets the job done though.

Edit: works brilliantly for occasional use bit I'd like something that can be applied permanently and system wide if possible. Don't know if anything exists though... yet?

I'm sure an app will come along that caters for this if it's seen to be a common observation (though I'm not sure it is).

i don't have this issue. i keep mine on about 40%
Once the devs start doing custom kernels, we'll get one that can go dimmer. Supercurio, the VooDoo lag-fix guy for the i9000 and other Galaxy S versions is big on color correction and gamma and all of that. One of his early fixes including making it less bright on minimum. He's looking to get a Nexus S, once he does we'll see lots of good stuff.
Meanwhile, even without one, he's chugging out lots of stuff for the NS community. Big fan of his work.

this is why the colours were changed

i'm looking through the samsung.git (the kernel source) in the android source, and came across some very interesting commits from Arve Hjønnevåg on this page
http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=kernel/samsung.git;a=shortlog;pg=1
click on the commit link for the details
they point out that the colours were actually wrong, and have now been reset. so, actually, all's good - so stop whining!
personally, i prefer the new colours!
looking through the commit logs is actually really interesting. a really annoying bug in googles where, if you pressed flash, it would turn itself off was fixed here: http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=ke...it;h=65799b8cfd15cb61201a0492d8d7799136c4d440
and the explanation is informative too!
What was the point of "fixing" the colors? It's not a bug.
The colors may have been "wrong" before 2.3.3 but that's how I saw it in the store and that's what it looked like when I bought it. If I saw it at the store with the 2.3.3 colors there's a good chance I would have purchased a different phone.
I prefer the "fixed" colors as well. I mean, would you buy a TV or monitor with inaccurate color representation?

I sure as hell wouldn't want to buy a TV with fixed colors and settings
If you want to get technical most mainstream LCD TV and PC monitors are TN panel and they produce inaccurate colors anyways no matter what settings oyu put them on compared to lets say an IPS which have much more accurate natural colors

things that are generally 'wrong' in software are bugs. your logic is wrong. let's face it, we didn't buy the phone for pretty colours.
and it's not a bug in android, it was a bug in the samsung crespo (nexus s) firmware that's been fixed. only users of the nexus s will see the colour changes. the samsung.git is the boot kernel code.

So are the colors now similar to the Epic or "washed out" as a couple of people have noticed.
I am going to store today to consider change from Epic. I love my phone, dont care as much about GB since it is rooted and rommed to 1.3, however
what I want is the size.
Just not sure about using my upgrade just for size since I know there will be newer, flashier things out, which I also don't know that I really need . .
Such a nice choice to have . .
Any other pros/cons

The argument just stems from the fact that the original colours on the Nexus S were over-saturated and were not 'correct' by any definition of valid colour space. Those that accept that there is a 'correct' colour space are generally happy with the change, and so don't consider the colours washed out.
Those that prefer the incorrect colours and over-saturation consider the colours to now be washed out.
As for pros and cons of the Nexus S, check out the many other threads giving detailed reviews or 'compare and contrast' opinion pieces.
For me the biggest seller to getting a Nexus S was the fact that updates come straight from Google (previously was on Milestone and Motorola are crap at providing timely updates), closely followed by the speed and responsiveness of the phone in general.

lol what do you think most people do before they buy a TV
you look the your screen 99% of the time you use the phone it plays a huge part in hardware decision for allot even its its colors
like someone said earlier its called bait and switch
and whats worst with this is that they are fixed with the exception of kernel with voodoo
Also i never seen once person complain before about the colors Google used prior to the update
BUT now that this "problem" was fixed i see tons of people complaining including me and then other just lay back and except it becasue Google said it was a good choice
also try owning a phone prior to this with OLED like i did with my nexus one and vibrant...even WP7 has accurate colors for and OLED panel.
Google is just made a stupid decision.
FYI im huge into hardware ill bet im one of the top enthusiast when it comes to this stuff ...mainly PC hardware

apples and oranges.
still, google and samsung even give you the complete source code for your phone, so, you can:
a) continue to whine and have it fall on deaf ears.
b) buckle up and modify the source code to your heart's content and hell, maybe even fix other problems.
c) use an existing solution.
whatever you choose, no one really cares, you're either happy, or if not, make the change.
so, start today.
make the change
'cause i'm standing with the... uh... oh.
not apples and oranges since they are FIXED on the nexus S

Now that my battery life is incredibly awesome thanks to kg2/3, I really don't have anything to complain about.
The positives of this phone greatly out weigh the negatives which is only one thing I can think of.. Some of my wallpapers look ugly because of the banding.
I think I can live with that.
Its a minor issue and only noticed with some loading screens like angrgbirds and xda app and certain photos.
I just love how people turn a decent post into a threat like the nexus prime.

Nexus s had the issue fixed because of outcry. Meek sheep in here advise to fix the problem is to ignore it. Not cool at all.
And its not a minor issue. For those of us with eyes it is glaring. And don't tell me that with dual core at 1.2 and 24 bit the things will grind to a halt. I don't buy it.

What "banding" issue? Mine is fine.... I guess if I "look" for issues I will find them. Then again the positives far outweigh the negatives. A little gradient here and there is no matter. Some people are their own worst nightmare with their "anality" Probably have their devices wrapped in armor lest a little nick or scratch appear during normal use .......How do they sleep at night?

Color banding? Don't have it.
Colors are incredible on my SGS2 and shades flow very smoothly. Best screen I've ever had.
yeah I've used a number of roms on my phone and haven't noticed any banding... I'm wondering if this is a hardware specific thing?
The default background image on the Go Launcher exhibits significant banding. The issue goes away when using CM7, currently this isn't a solution as CM7 is severely functionality-impaired at the moment.
A fix would be appreciated, it's a minor irritation though. Seems a bit silly to have such a powerful device with such a great screen and then run it at a lower bit-depth.

Yeah, because the problem IS there, anyone saying "I don't have it" or "it doesn't exists" is either ignorant or lying, because it's a FACT the problem(or whatever you want to call it) exists. The purpose of this topic is rather to ask to people how they live with it/what they think of it.
My 2 cents is that it's quite annoying. Now I see it, I notice it everywhere, games, apps, wallpapers. We'll see how the Tegra-version of the Galaxy S2 with SLCD screen will manage color gradients - if banding still occurs, we can be quite sure it's software-related, if not, there's more chance for it to be hardware-related(though not sure).
