Help Flashing Music Player Please - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so I just rooted my phone and uninstalled the android music player. I then flashed an older version of the stock android music player which I really like, but the app isn't showing up on my phone. I did the same thing on my old S2 and it worked fine, so I'm not sure what's up.
I've attached the music player zip if that helps. Maybe it's incompatible with an S5?
Also, does anyone know where to get other older versions of the stock android music player?

Did you try to install the music player as a system app......
That is probably the only method that will work......
If you are rooted, you need a root enabled file explorer like ES file explorer or Root Explorer.
You copy your music player app and paste it into.....
system>>app (you have to have RW permissions enabled in the file explorer app)
Then you change the permissions for the music player to rw- r-- r-- and reboot.....
It *should* be 'job done'.......

Hi... thanks for your help. I got Root Explorer and copied the zip file into the app folder, then flashed the zip again, but it didn't work. Am I supposed to transfer the zip file or the apk file to that folder?
Also, in the application manager there's something called "multimedia UI service layer", which has the same icon as the stock music player. Should I uninstall this too? Would I need to remove any trace of the stock player to get this one to work?

No....this app cannot be installed in the usual manner (with a package installer) it has to be unzipped to its apk format, then copied/pasted into that folder and it's permissions changed (as described above).....
As for any other apps that *look* like the app you are trying to install (Unless they are called exactly the same thing) it's probably best to leave them alone.
Just remember, you *must* reboot the device in order for the copy/paste/permission change to take effect.....
Edit.....just re read your original post.....
Not sure if it'll work anyway......
Most system apps are framework dependent.....
Meaning that if your preferred music player was built for an older version of Android, it *may not* work if installed into a newer version.....
http://i.imgur.com/rVnFwJM.jpg

I put the apk file in the app folder and it's showing up in my phone now! Problem is, whenever I start it I get the message "unfortunately music player has stopped". I think I may have messed something up when I uninstalled the stock player because I re-flashed it as well before and got the same message. I think maybe I'll have to do a factory reset, which is ok cause I just got the phone.

I doubt factory resetting will help much in this case.....If you've changed stuff in the system folder, it won't delete what you did and reset things, it'll just perform the reset on what is currently installed....
What you changed will still be there.
Did you change the permissions of the app correctly?
Did you reboot afterwards?
http://i.imgur.com/rVnFwJM.jpg

Uh oh that sucks. I have the read and write permissions checked, and execute is unchecked. I tried installing it from the app folder and it gives me the message "app not installed".

No fella......you don't install the app at all....
You.....
1) copy/paste the app into the [system>>app] folder.
2) long press on the app until a dialog box opens.
3) select permissions from that dialog box.
4) change app permissions to......
rw- r-- r--
5) Reboot the device.
Job done

and you need to set the permission 'check' marks to the same configuration as in the picture.

Yes that's what I did initially, and those are the permissions I have. I thought that after it didn't work that trying to install it might, but it didn't. I think uninstalling the stock player screwed something up.

Or it could simply be that the version of music player is incompatible with the version of Android you have.....
Where to go from here?......
3 options......
1) download your firmware, extract the music player and install it like you've been trying to do with your preferred version....
2) flash the entire firmware again.
3) try a 3rd party music player

I ended up re-flashing the stock rom and everything is back to normal. Can't get the old music player to work but oh well. Thanks for your help!

Photosphere feature in 4.2

So I was playing with Photosphere on my Nexus S, and a thought came in.
Samsung, or any other OEM's that make Android Camera, should work hard to bring 4.2 update to their Android Cameras.
Photosphere would be a standout/luring feature to promote their Android Cameras which are somewhat a new kind of product.
While Photosphere is still in beta and doesn't stitch very well, I think people still would like to try it out since it is something new and exciting.
Samsung, Nikon, you heard?
Hurry up before someone does it first.

Hi Robb
I followed your instructions and was able to download the App + Lib onto my PC and extracted the WinRar files.
I've copied them to my Galaxy Camera's Ext SD card and can copy them to the system directories.
But I'm not sure how to change permissions on the files.
Can you please explain how to do this? I'm a noob to Android.
Thanks.
I use photo sphere too on my galaxy camera and work fine.
So for your problem, you need to change right of the file like say on the link provide.
For doing that, you need a file explorer with admin right.
I use ES file explorer.
Once you install this file explorer, you need first to allow him to access to root, for that go to : Settings
Then on the boot you will found : Root settings
Enable everything there.
Then after enable the first one, you get a pop up inform you to agree to give right on Super SU. Do Yes and after agree to give right.
When done, go to your folder app and lib where you copy the file, found the file one by one and made a long push on the file for show a menu and choice option on bottom "Properties" that open a new windows.
There click on "change" button and enable everything in "Read" column and on user for "write" column then click "ok" and again "ok".
Do that for all files (5 if I remember well) and reboot the Camera.
You will got 2 new icon for camera and galery
Hope I'm clear ^^

Thanks David.
I've downloaded ES File Explorer and am having difficulty copying the files to the system/app directory.
First I connect the SGC to my PC and after the files are extracted with WinRar I copied them to the Download folder on the Camera.
Then using ES File Explorer I navigate to the Download folder and tried to copy/paste the files to the System/app directory but it gave the message that copy "GoogleGallery.apk" failed? The Gmscore.apk was copied OK.
What am I doing wrong?
I'll recheck the Root settings but I think I did that right as I can access the Root directory in ES File Manager now.
BTW, could it be because my SGC is not Rooted?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Yes I think you need root your device for get right to change file in system/app folder or even right of file.
So first root your device, very easy for the moment due of Eqynox issue, uberNoobZA and cybriks on the forum confirm he can root with the tools from Chainfire.
You can read the full topic about root Galaxy Camera here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995245
Or go to page 5 firectly if you want use the method from Chainfire where uberNoobZA and cybriks confirm it work
The link about how to use the Chainfire tools :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050297
This method should be the easy way compare to the one use Odin, so you should be able to use it, it's only an app you run and do eveything alone
So do it and then try again to copy file and change right and you probably can use Photo Sphere (I like this function ^__^)

[Q] Cannot write to sdcard0 without root - Can I fix it?

I have a Sprint GN3. I've rooted with CF Auto Root, flashed TWRP, flashed Jellybomb, and then restored back to stock from a nandroid backup.
I'm not sure when it started, but it appears that I can't write to sdcard0 or Emulated/0 without root or system permissions. For example, I can use Astro to create a new folder in extSdCard just fine, but it fails if I try to create a folder in sdcard0. It works from Total Commander or Root Explorer but I also get the "...has been granted superuser permissions" popup.
I can't download any files in Chrome or Dolphin, and downloads from Ambiance also fail, I'm assuming because it's failing to write to sdcard0, and Audible throws an error when it tries to create my data file in /emulated/0.
But setting the storage location for the camera to Device seems to work just fine.
Below are the permissions I'm seeing in Root Explorer. Does anything look obviously wrong? Is sdcard0 supposed to be owned by Root while extSdCard is owned by System? Or what else should I look for?

Try this app from the play store FREE worked great for me...
SOLVED!!!!
Had the same issue and its cuz the USB debugging was turned off in the Developer apps to my luck I had it on, but turned it off 1 week prior to my ph crashing... lol I tried EVERYTHING for 3 days and I'm tech savy lol What I ended up doing was using my fiance's note 3 to back up all her files via the SD card on her phone and then loaded it into mine and it worked like a charm. It's even a free app from the play store called "Root Browser" and NO you do not have to root their phone to copy their files... Copy the files, on the broken phone do the recovery mode (Volume Up + Home Key + Power Button) then load from external source. Be sure to wipe your data and all that before installing on the broken ph.... and bada-bing bada-bang! FIXED!
I suggest downloading that in the future and keeping that spare SD card in the GUN SAFE!!! just in case you happen to re-root your phone later lol
Hope this helps out since I about threw my Note 3 at the wall from all the looping frustration...lol Tried Odin, Kies3 and nothing... even the ABD cmd and no luck.... Idk why I didn't think about doing that in the past lol GOOD LUCK!:fingers-crossed:

[GUIDE][ROOT] Use Viper4Android (or similar) with NC, or Concept EQ with NC too

Hi, first of all I'm sorry for my english.
After a long time searching the way to use a better EQ on my Xperia Z3 (I don't like the official), and after a lot of tests, I've found a way to use the Concept EQ or the amazing Viper4Android with NC feature on my Xperia Z3.
For my tests I've used the official Viper4Android, the new A.R.I.S.E., and the Concept EQ extracted from Official Concept firmware (I attach a deodexed version).
Concept EQ with NC:
Go to Applications, clear data and disable the MusicFX, Sound Enhacement and Headphone Selection apps.
Use your preferred file explorer (with root access) to remove the above apps folders from /system:
/system/app/SoundEnhacement
/system/app/HeadphonesSelection
/system/priv-app/MusicFX
Reboot to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik (important, or new EQ will FC)
Exit the recovery and let the phone to recreate Dalvik cache.
After the phone starts, create a new folder in /system called MusicFX and copy the concept EQ apk to that folder.
Set the permissions of the apk to 644 (rw-r--r--)
Reboot the phone and enjoy the Concept EQ on official FW
The first time you will see the EQ with no bands and only two pressets. You have to play at least one song to fix it (not the full song ).

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Viper4Android with NC:
Download Viper4Android from the official page
Create a folder Called Viper4Android on /system/priv-app
Copy the downloaded APK to that folder and rename it to Viper4Android.apk.
Set the permissions of the apk to 644 (rw-r--r--).
Go to Applications, disable the MusicFX app and clear it's data/cache.
Remove the MusicFX folder using your preferred explorer (/system/priv-app/MusicFX)
Open the Viper4Android App, open the settings menu and press Install Driver.
Reboot the phone
After reboot, you will see how if you plug your NC headphone the NC icon will appear and should work.
The Sony EQ is too selfish to allow other EQ to take the control, so you will go to Applications and disable the Sound Enhacement app to allow V4A to take the control. The NC icon will dissapear, but NC should still working.
A.R.I.S.E with NC:
How A.R.I.S.E. is based in V4A, the steps to make it work are similar. Only changes the way to install because A.R.I.S.E. is flashable.
Download A.R.I.S.E. from the official page
Go to Applications, disable the MusicFX app and clear it's data/cache.
Go to recovery and flash the downloaded zip
The zip contains a new MusicFX version but at least for me, the new MusicFX app FC so I've removed the app folder using the file explorer (/system/priv-app/MusicFX)
Reboot the phone
NOTE: The A.R.I.S.E. zip have the drivers too, so you don't need to install the V4A drivers.
I hope you find this guide usefull.
Greetings!!

Where are the ring tones?

I got my S8+ today and set up has been a breeze. However, I want to set up some ring tones but can't find them! The Settings Sounds option just takes me to a directory listing and the Ringtones directory has just one file. Am I missing something? Where's the usual list of tones?
Thanks

Yep, just what I am looking for....
Settings > sounds and vibration > ringtones.
If you don't see them, I would factory reset your phone

Looked there. I have just spent all day building the phone. I can't bear the thought of a factory reset ?
Backup your phone, factory reset, then restore. That'll work in theory lo l

Just found a zip file with the ring and notification tones and have loaded them. However, the zip file also contained a directory called "UI" with a load of sound files but there is no such directory on the phone. Any ideas where these files should go?
OP probably run into same stupid problem as I did: first time I changed ring tone, it gave me option to pick file manager, I picked wrong one, which didn't have access to system files and was set as default. From now on everytime I want to change ringtone, I get root directory with empty ringtone folder. Going to default to reset it didn't help, that particular default was not listed in there. I had to uninstall the es file manager to get the option to choose default apps again and the one with Android icon is the right one with proper access. Once you do that it will work. I absolutely hate Android access folder restrictions, can't wait to root this stupid phone so it works the way it should. I also changed settings for default apps: most default apps don't show up in default apps menu, how am I supposed to change them? Now I have option to run it once, test it and then later set as default, if I want to. And why ringtone folder has restricted access is totally beyond me.
Thank you pete4k. I had the same problem and you pointed me to the solution. I didn't have to uninstall ES file manager, though. I just went to Settings/Apps/ES File Manager Pro/Set as Default and pressed the "Clear Defaults" button.

I'm glad my post pointed you in the right direction and yes, that should work too.
Ringtone folder was empty
Tried looking everywhere file explorer, where did the built in folder of ringtone just shown empty. Beyond my understandment.
All i did was set a new ringtone from my selected music, & all built in ringtone in samsung disappeared.
Thanks to pete solution worked. Im trying to click thanks but its greyed out. So i register & logged in especially to do that.
Solution as described go to settings app es explorer clear defaults.
Then went back to settings selected ring tone it asked me choose es explorer or green android bar ( original android ) selected original android. Simply got all builtin ringtones back, as well as my mp3 ringtone was automatically added to built in list.
Much thanks couldnt do it without this help.
Some problems are beyond underst.
Very quick solution. But took time to get here.
Thanks to google, this forum & mr pete once again
On my Galaxy S8, I was using Total Commander instead of ES File Explorer, so I ended up finding the actual directory: /system/media/audio/ringtones and /system/media/audio/notifications.

Joying 6.0.1 Update, original settings.apk

No matter if I replace it manually or using AssassinLament's script, the original android settings apk (settings.apk from priv-app/settings in the rom) always immediately crashes and closes. Joyings version of settings.apk works fine. Permissions set to 0644. Any ideas?
Searched for a solution in the roll up/ Update 6 threads, sorry If I missed it in there somewhere.

The most important part of this answer is that you NOT leave the original /system/priv-app/Settings/oat/x86/Settings.odex
The odex file is the pre-processed file of the classes.dex file of the original Settings.apk. If you leave the "old" odex file in place the Dalvik JVM goes haywire as the apk is not correct.
If you only want to copy the Settings.apk file, you have to remove the odex file in that case. The Dalvik JVM will create a new one in the Dalvik cache (the "optimizing" x application(s) message).
So, yes. It is better to simply copy the entire Settings folder including the oat data.
I only add this to give some more insight why it is going wrong if you only copy the new apk in without removing/replacing the oat content as well.

I wish I could get this working but even deleting the entire Settings folder and replacing it with the one extracted from the Joying zip and setting all folders to 755 and files to 644, settings stills crashes on open
I even tried replacing the folder back with the old one to see if it still worked and it does with the old settings??
I even tried the script from this post: (although this is just a bat file of what I was doing manually anyway)

Still crashes on open :'(
I keep getting this error when trying to update. I did the file it suggested if an error occurred that worked then tried to go back and install the upgrade file and I get this error. Any help?

And what do you mean with Bluetooth stock settings? If you mean a "set to factory defaults" you can do that from the Settings apk.
If you mean the standard Android Settings app, then be more specific.

I meant the "Settings > Bluetooth" portion of any Android default settings menu which I do not have within my Joying Sofia 8" 6.0.1 unit's settings menu.
However I tried to replace both files today and settings.apk doesn't even start after a reboot. I discovered there is no "/system/priv-app/Settings/oat/x86/Settings.odex" file/folder but "/system/framework/oat/x86/Settings.odex" on my device!?
I changed permissions of both files to 644 of course.

It needs a rooted unit. If you don't have that: try the script.
And yes: Joyings crippled version doesn't need an odex. The original Android AOSP version does.
Ahhh... I have rooted my device yesterday and installed your toolset but didn't check all options yet... Will try tomorrow as just the upgraded version 1.6 installed late night...thanks mate!
