got my g2 d800 and i want to root and flah a rom but have many questions help... - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok guys got my att d800 and i want to root and install recovery and a rom.. am not new at flashing but the way g2 is i am.. well first of all am pretty worried about refurbished. i really dont want to open the phone.. i have checked the thread about refurbished phones... well i got mine from craiglist. black 32gb. it had everything except the charger.. the box manual and a how to use guide, a at&t sim card in a little bag with a metal g2 with pin. ( i assume this is to open sim tray).. i cheked phone imei on dialer and it matches, i used online phone imei and it matches ive checked the box and it matches.. if i go this way and trust this way, will i be able to recover phone back and unbrick if it does?
if i go and trsut its a true d800
what are the steps? what should i do first back up imei? first root right and recovery thats where i can back up efs that contains imei number right? if so wich method of root and wich ecovery. am not good at command prompt.
then whats next?
phone is unlocked am in mexico havent tried my sim card yet.
on software it says am on d80030f. lollipop
when you do nandroids can you save it in a laptop and if need it can it be tranfer back to phone, on recovery mode.?

Well, first, welcome in G2 forum !
Ok, so about your questions:
-First step, yeah, backup your EFS partition -> use this thread, thanks to @autoprime: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451390: it will backing up the partitions on your phone, then you MUST MOVE those backups into safe place, such as an external hard drive.
-Second step, yes, when you make an Nandroid Backup, it's located in "/sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/your_phone_id/", so if you provide to do "risky" things, do the same as the EFS, move your backups into safe place: if you want to be able to push it when in recovery, you must use a recovery that use the MTP protocol: the latest TWRP use it, so flash it into recovery (see my signature to link for TWRP, BUT USE THE 2.8.7.1 VERSION, 'CAUSE THE 2.8.7.2 SEEMS TO HAVE A BUG THAT WIPE YOUR DATA).
If you experimenting a bootloop for example, boot into recovery, plug your phone, and you'll be able, after LG's drivers installed, to push the backup from your PC to your phone.
Here if you got any questions mate!

Hmmm, nice dude, you make things fast !
But be sure every time you download a ROM to download the correct version for your model, and also, check some posts into the ROM threads to see how you can go back to stock, etc. Always good things to do !

THANK YOU, Sir.
Update:
Having trouble with Flashify. It doesn't see a recovery image, I guess. I tried putting the zip file, the extracted folder, AND the single file into Flashify's Recovery folder. No go. It doesn't see a file to flash for some reason. Am I doing something wrong?
Single file would be the way to go. No clue, have never actually used it. Just backed it up. Sorry. Maybe just may work for me. Shouldn't you be able to remove from a tot or extracted kdz bin?
Reverting to stock recovery in order to accept OTA updates ...
For anyone trying to apply any OTA updates, e.g., from Verizon, after modding your phone, restoring back to your previous version and wanting to go back to stock (for WHATEVER reason):
As you may have found out, trying to apply OTA updates with a custom recovery seemingly bricks your phone (it doesn't really, there are some nifty "dd" Linux commands you can use to get your phone to break out of the boot-loop it's stuck in).
Since I went back to my previously backed up stock ROM, I also wanted to revert to my stock recovery so that I could accept Verizon's OTA updates (if only because the popup reminders are annoying and a drain of the battery).
Here are the steps I followed, thanks to this thread:
- I downloaded the recovery.img from the link in Partager.info's post (#4) (choose the model subfolder which corresponds to your variant of the G2).
- I used "adb push" to copy the file from my computer to /sdcard (good to have on the sdcard partition as the rest get blown away when you flash a ROM)
- I installed "Flashify (for root users)" (found in the Play Store) on my phone
- I ran Flashify and chose the stock recovery file I downloaded which was in the /sdcard folder as expected (no need to put image files in specific folders; whatever works best for you)
- It flashed it in a blink of the eye and asked me to reboot; I did and it's worth mentioning I got the Android with the triangle (*clench*)
- I held the power button and forced it to shut down/reboot
- Upon reboot, I saw the Verizon boot animation (*unclench*)
- I checked for an update from Verizon and it prompted me to reboot and apply it; I clicked "Install now"
- It successfully rebooted and applied the update; what a relief to see the firmware update splash screen
Pfew. Thanks again, Partager.info and Steamer86.

Need help, urgent

Hi, I have a D806 G2 and I have a big problem.
After an error modifying my build.prop I was left with a broken phone. It wouldn't boot to the os.
I was rooted and with TWRP so I restarded and tried to revert to the old build.prop (that's the only backup I had) and it didn't work.
I followed the tutorials to go back to stock (I had done it once before to update my phone while rooted, but that time the phone was working fine).
Well, to my surprise, given that I only had recovery or download mode, the process started but failed with an error.
Now, I don't have a System, meaning that my system folder is empty so I really don't have an os in the phone, and all procedures to flash a rom, fail.
I have tried flashtools and everyother tool but nothing, can't put a rom in the phone.
Now I'm kinda desperated because It is too expensive for me to loose the phone (things in Argentina are far too expensive) and when I put it in download mode it clearly says ROOTED so I will have a problem with guaranty.
Please, someone give me a hand!!

Sorry was too crazy to post most data.
No I don't have a backup of my rom, but I got a backup from another phone and it doesn't work
Gladly I could use a USB OTG to copy Carbon and Gapps to the phone and I could install that so the phone is working now.
The problem is going back to stock because I would need a backup of a D806 rom and I don't have one.
I'm on TWRP 2.6.3.4 and it's working fine now. Thank you very much.,
Very simple and very lucky you still can access download mode. Just using flashtools to flash TOT again then its all go back to original stock.

I would if I could, but my IMEI reads 0, hence no luck with LG software.
Luckily I could boot the phone to an AOSP rom (copied via USB OTG to my phone -I still have recovery-)
So, I have an AOSP rom, I can get a backup of a similar rom to my stock rom -from a user in another forum- and I can install that backup (foing it ATM)
BUT, my IMEI is 0 so LG software doesn't fully recognize my rom and drivers don't fully install
HELP??

I've had a tmo g2 since november, i'm still on 4.2.2, I just rooted the phone and I'm trying to install a recovery. I tried TWRP by the app in the playstore, then voldown + power to get into recovery, just reloaded the phone. I uninstalled twrp and tried all three offered but the same thing happens with each, so am I screwed? Plz plz plz, I'm hoping someone can point out what I'm missing here, innumerable thanks if you can.
Bump maybe?
hope someone who can helps sees this before it fades away...
go onto the play store and get freegee it should detect your phone and come up with compatable recoveries if so click the recovery you want and it will download and install
If NOT then google twrp revovery for lg g2 d801 and download a version of twrp for your model and get twrp manager from play store on the twrp manager go to install then locate the downloaded recovery then flash it after a while you will have a custom recovery instaed hope this worked for you
Thanks Reecegibbs. That's what I did while I was waiting for someone to respond to this. Same thing essentially, but now i can't get the little android guy to pop up. I got freegee, tried cwm but it stalled and never finished, but I installed twrp that way, tried to reboot to recovery, and the same thing happened minus the momentary glimpse of droid.

the only thing i can think of right now is to backup all your data on your phone reflash the kdz file and then do a hard resetwhen booted use the ioroot it the freegee will do the rest this will work but it will require you to lose your apps and rember to back up personal data as this will wipe that too

Pretty sure I'm not missing something major, but wth is a kdz file? I used ioroot24 to root, and like i said, twrp thru the play store and then the AIO i linked to to try flashing a recovery. I know I have all the drivers installed properly, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to root, so where does this kdz file come into play?

a kdz file is basically the whole operating system with extracrap thrown in for the lg g2 they are normally about 1.5gb to 2.1gb in size for you phone i will link the right kdz file if you can tell me the infomation about your phone and also give you the tools to flash it if your interested
Thanks for the offer, but I got it myself last night. I had to use freegee to install TWRP, then I downloaded the twrp app, gave it SU access and used it to boot into recovery, which worked this time, so I could flash the rom. Apparently it takes two.

[Q] HOW TO: LP D802 - back to stock

I installed leaked international LP rom for d802 from this DEAD/closed link http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g2/development/rom-international-lollipop-stock-g2-d802-t3058129/
Rom is working fine but I wonder what steps do I have to take to go back to STOCK KK? I read the thread before it was closed and it was briefly mentioned. Now i cannot search for that answer.
I enabled usb debugging but since adb devices does not list any connected device, I'm a little scared to do something wrong if I wanted to go back to KK.
I think someone has written that you must first install AUTOREC - which restores some crucial partitions , before flashing new rom. Is that correct?
If someone is interested I can send them a link to the rom.
EDIT: I solved adb devices not showing by choosing USB device connection to PTP.
I would like also some clarification
use this to fix partitions before restoring/flashing rom

personally, i haven't tried it. but this was the fix that was mentioned in the stock D802 thread before it was closed.
I just went back from the leaked LP ROM to Mahdi using AutoRec.
>AutoRec
>Reboot to recovery via AutoRec
>Restored full (system, data, efs, radio, recovery, etc) nandroid
>wiped cache+dalvik cache
>reboot
Everything working perfect like before LP.
I _guess_ (guess = I don't know it exactly) you can just flash a new ROM etc, if you don't have a nandroid backup. But you may need to flash bootloader/radio.
Also you may wait for confirmation by more experienced user/s. Sorry.
I install that rom, without root and i just go to recovery using power+vol down and install cloudy g2 and its work....
Because that rom is stock base 20H

Unable to install any rom with recovery.

I have a Note 3 N9005.
I installed the latest TWRP recovery.
No matter which rom I try to flash to the system, the same thing happens.
I see that the Aroma installer is strarting and than it just resets for no reason, no install made.
The only sulotion I have found so far is to install a 5.0 stock rom via Odin.
I want to install a custom rom 6.0.1.

I tried to do the same but ended up bricking my phone. So then I try to unbrick/unroot my phone by flashing the stock rom but I can't do that either cause now it says "Volume Size is too big 4620288<4718599. Need help!!!! ASAP!
Hey guys, I had the same problem at first and it freaked me out too.
Try installing the older 2.8.7.0 version for TWRP through the app, instead of the latest or any other after v3 for that matter. Apparently I've read from other forums that it's due to lack of Aroma Installer Support.
Hope this helps
Confirm the phone's model # by booting into download mode befor flashing TWRP or a stock ROM from sammobile.com.
Will try
I flashed the stock rom packege with odin.
saved my phone after brick.
so you are saying that by downgrading the TWRP recovery i can use aroma insatller based roms again?
cause i also tried to install reserection remix rom (I think this has no aroma in it), i got a massage that said that i cannot install it as well.
refuses to let me change into anything but stock rom.
rooting did not help at all.

To be honest I don't really know about Cyanogen Mod, however this was just my personal experience with Aroma Installer. I've tried DarkWolf_FW and Aryamod ROMs which are both S7 Edge Port ROMs, and they both use Aroma Installer.
- Also! Take the opportunity to make a Nandroid backup just in case the installation goes bad, then you can restore to where you are right now. Honestly downgrading just worked for me so please don't make me liable if anything goes to pot, at least you will have a full device backup to the exact point in your system which I have found extremely useful when trying different ROMs and Kernels.

don't worry man
1. I always backup the whole phone before ANY change.
2. your suggestion sound interesting, cause i tried the same rom's you did but no install was made.
3. i'll maybe try a different recovery... maybe CWM.

Hey, just randomly thinking, did you reset all your System, Data and Cache and Dalvik Cache files before you tried to install the ROMs? Sorry, this might not make a difference, but I don't think I have any more advice to give (I'm kinda new to this too ).
Hope CWM recovery goes well, let me know how it goes

Doing a complete backup before anything is always the safest bet.
From my experience, TWRP 3+ is fine for CM and AOSP based ROMs.
TWRP 2.8.7-0 is the one you should use to flash ROMs using AROMA Installer.
If you read the OP (opening post) on any ROM forum, it will usually include installation instructions and generally states which TWRP version should be used.
Good Luck.

I presume when you say it doesn't turn on you mean it doesn't boot into the Android environment. Have you tried unplugging the battery and pressing the Volume Up + Home + Power Button? Yes... I was surprised you don't have to be an octopus too..
Then restore the Nandroid backup from before.
You can also flash TWRP through Odin without root, have a look at the TWRP website for more info.

all you need is to flush new stock rom via Odin.
Search the web (like I did) to find a stock rom with 4 .tar files in it.
There should be instructions on how to install but usually all needs to be done is this:
1. load odin 3.*
2. enter the phone in download mode.
3. After you see the line 'add' in odin, load the .tar files to the correct place each (not hard they are tagged by same name)
4. Flush and pray.
5. After a successful install the phone will reboot, this will take a while so don't get streesed.
after about 10-15 min the phone will load again.
Root one more time via odin and try to install again.
