Sony Z5 Dual - Dual Active SIM or Dual Standby and 3G/4G/LTE active on both? - Xperia Z5 General

Hi Folks,
I am looking for a Z5 Dual user who has 2 SIM cards inserted that both have active data connections available with their carriers e.g. AT&T and T-Mobile in the USA or Telstra & Optus in Australia etc, etc.
I am trying to work out if the phone will support dual active 3G or 4G or LTE? The reason why is the 2G network where I am will shut down soon so the frequencies on the 2G network will stop working.
The model I am considering for purchase is E6683 (http://developer.sonymobile.com/downloads/whitepapers/xperia-z5-dual-e6633-and-e6683-white-paper/)
– E6683 UMTS HSPA+ 850 (Band V), 900 (Band VIII), 1900 (Band II),
AWS-1(Band IV), 2100 (Band I) MHz
: GSM GPRS/EDGE 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz
: LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 17, 20, 38, 39, 40, 41)
I keep hearing that there is no phone that is capable of dual LTE as the battery drain will be huge but with 3G maybe possibility?
Thanks

I'm using a Z5 Dual (E6683) which I bought from Hong Kong. It is a Dual Standby but not Dual LTE. You can select either SIM 1 or SIM 2 to have LTE.
One SIM will be on LTE and the other on 2G.

You can only use data connection on one sim card, the other one is gsm. If it is dual lte or 3g, how would the phone or the apps know which card's data to use? It will be too complicated.

Thanks for your replies, it seems the MotoG is able to maintain 2 data connections, this was reported by another user in XDA forums:

Dual 4g I've picked up lte/4g on both sims and in settings it gives you the option highest 4g when you've got data enabled on second sim"
You would think that the Z5 could do the same ?

Hi Guys, just an important question: the device has two slot for the SIM cards and one slot for the SD (3 slots) or just two slot for a sim and and SD or 2 sim ? Thank you
@tasmaniandevil could u help me?

I have 2 SIMs with Bell Mobility here in Canada. Bell doesn't have a 2G network. Would this phone (or any other) be capable of having LTE on SIM 1 for voice and data and 3G on the second one for voice only?

2 SIM slots + SD slot. I only use the 2nd SIM while travelling, so I can't say how they would work atm. But typically on other dual SIM phones, any SIM used for voice-only in slot 2 is okay. At least I haven't run into an issue, but YMMV.

You can choose which sim card you want to be used for data and the other is only 2G. If your BELL card doesn't have 2G network, you have to set it up for data and set the other sim card to 2g only. In that case, you won't be able to use the data on your 2nd sim card.

It only allows 2G (GSM) for the voice SIM? God thing I don't need the dual SIM abilities in Japan. The cell companies don't have GSM aymore, only W CDMA (3G/HSPDA).

Sane model as the one I ordered. Thanks for the screen shots (glad I took French in high school lol)
Somewhat disappointing, but like I said don't really have a use for dual sim, especially while in Japan. Mostly bought it because the regular Z5 was out of stock.
Thanks again.

they are side by side under the flap: the dual has a tray which is kind of annoying to get out and the SD is a push in/out affair

I only know some Chinese phone vendors producing dual-sim-dual-LTE phones, which is achieved via putting an extra baseband chip or something in the phone.

I have 2 SIMs from Bell, with 2 different phone numbers. I don't need data on both because they both share the data but I do need 3G voice on both to be live. One will be LTE data+voice and the second 3G but no data. Anything like that exist?

No, as stated before, you can't have both SIMs connected on 3G. One can be connected to LTE/3G for data and voice but the other is only GSM.

No you can't. One of the sim HAS to be set to GSM. If you set it to 3g of 4g, it automatically set the other back to GSM.

does this phone actually work with WIND Mobile (E6883)
i was looking at the white paper in hk for the device at the Sony store and it doesnt' say support for AWS1700
however, GSM Arena says otherwise

maybe a stupid question, but why do you need data on 2 sim cards? Are you paying for data on 2 sim cards? Because you can switch easily between one sim or the other according to which plan you wanna use.

It already is? The phone comes unlocked.
You can use it on any GSM carrier. Be aware, however, you will only get a 3G signal if you are using it on T-Mobile's network. You cannot use this phone on CDMA carriers(Sprint/Verizon) because of the different technologies.

Do you mean SIM unlocked the phone to be used on any GSM network? The phone is factory SIM unlocked from Samsung/Google, either you bought it full price or with the contract, still SIM unlocked. Just insert any Sim card of your choice and your good to go.

in usa it is ,,,but in uk on 02 its carrier locked as i want to put it on 3 network

What do you mean when you saying that you can use 3G only in T-mobile network??
If i put a Greek SIM card f.e. with a GSM provider, i will be unable to use 3G???
Different GSM devices use different frequencies. That is why there was an AT&T nexus1 and a T-Mobile nexus1. Both GSM phones, but different frequencies. If you use a T-mobile phone on a network like AT&T you cannot get 3g. The phone will work, with voice, and edge data, but no 3g. Pretty sure same goes for the AT&T n1 on t-mo, but I could be wrong there, too lazy to check the frequencies.
Always check to make sure your GSM provider uses the same 3g/2g frequency as your device.
I'm not smart enough to know why they are unable to build the Nexus with a radio that covers all frequencies, would be cool if somebody could elaborate on that.

You need to find what frequencies your greek provider has for 3G. The nexus s has 900 / 1700 / 2100. I think it might work as it has 2100 band, but please double check what your carrier has for 3G bands, as I don't live in europe.
So i just checked and My Provider's 3G frequency is at 2100MHz...
Also My provider's GSM frequencies are 900/1800...
That means i can't get Nexus S 3G work on my provider???

Here i found a usefull link to check what frequencies all providers all over the world use...
Yep, you will have 3G on your nexus s.
The Nexus S with the frequencies it uses will work on T-Mobiles 3G network in the USA and the 3g on most if not all carriers in Europe.

Dual-SIM SM-G9287 in the UK

Yes. it works like that.
I'm currently in Australia and like the look of this dual sim phone. The specs say it should be 3G on both SIM cards....is this not possible in UK because of the SIM 2 bands ? I don't want to by it at just under A$1000 and get back to UK to find it doesn't work well due to network compatibility issues. I have tried reading the country network bands info online but I don't really understand if the uk and Europe can make use of the LTE band or not....... I frequently go UK and France (live in UK) so anyone know how this phone will workout in these countries.
I forgot to say that I'm on a Three network SIM in UK. (Long live the "feel at home" features they offer!)
I own this model and both sim use lte but you cant use them at the same time.

Thanx for your reply. Would you say it's a good phone for use in the UK or would you buy a UK model if you had the chance to change again?
It's just that there are not many dual phones available in UK.......
Currently I use an HTC m7 dual SIM.
It works perfectly fine in UK, But I advise You to Use EE UK. They offers LTE cat.9 (4G+). o2 doesn't support 4G on that phone. I don't know about rest networks.
Ok thanx, I will check what THREE network does. I saw your earlier post when you just got the phone and you asked a similar question as me about 4G so I guess your issue was service provider then and you now on EE.
Can you advise me one more thing...... If you put your EE SIM in to SIM 2 shot does it still work on 4G with data connection on SIM 2?
check if your carrier support this following band.
Cellular Networks: GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS850 (B5), UMTS1700/2100 (B4), UMTS1900 (B2), UMTS2100 (B1), LTE700 (B17), LTE850 (B5), LTE1700/2100 (B4), LTE1900 (B2), LTE700 (B12), LTE800 (B26), TD-LTE2600 (B38), TD-LTE2500 (B41), TD-LTE2300 (B40), TD-LTE1900 (B39)

I checked and THREE network sports LTE B2.
But what I would like to know is if sim 2 is selected for the preferred data connection, well it connect on LTE or 3G or like my HTC m7 dual SIM only 2G?
Could anyone try this for me and let me know. I have seen different advice on different sales sites so not sure.
Both sim card slots offers LTE. You just need to choose which simcard need to be LTE. You can swap LTE between simcards without removing it. Thing is, that You can use LTE on one sim, other one will be 2G. No way to get 4G on two sims at the same time.
Thank you for testing and letting me know, I don't need 4G on both slots at the same time, so that works for me.

S8 Dual Sim - Is it 4G/3G or 4G/2G - Dual Standby

Trying to read through as much as I can, but can't find a definitive answer to see if the dual sim options will facilitate a 3G network for the second sim, as in Australia the 2G network already scheduled to be turned off (Telstra Dec 2016 - Optus April 2017 - Vodafone Sep 2017).
From what a can see on the specs pages, it seems the second sim is only 2G/GSM capable, but would appreciate if anyone can confirm or debunk my 'theory'.
I also assume dual won't be available in Oz, so assuming HK best option again (like always) to obtain dual version? Thanks for the advice, cheers!
http://www.phonemore.com/phone/samsung-galaxy-s8-duos-sm-g9500/3233
According to this SIM No. 2 only supports 2G.
it might be wrong. after nougat update S7 edge itself got the option for 3g in secondary sim while using 4g as first sim
Thanks, I appreciate the comments.
The only other mention apart from Columbo_70's link above I can find (at a couple of sites) is similar to this
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s8-8161.php - showing the "(dual-SIM model only)" statement next to the 2G networks. Could mean the 2G networks only available on the second sim slot(as well as 3G?) or second sim is only 2G - depends on how you interpret.
Definitive answer may have to wait until phone is in user hands, and user verification can take place, as I tend to feel (hope) same as Quicksilver, that Nougat will give it the 3G functionality.
Currently on S7 edge i have:
Sim 1: lte/3g/2g
Sim 2: 3g/2g
I'd expect s8 to be the same.
I bought a S7 Edge dual sim in Dubai.
I have a subscription to Orange in France where I get 4G+ and a second subcription in France with Free
where I only get 2G.
I installed lately the latest Superman rom 2.4 with Nougat (great rom by the way) and hoped when going to Japan I could finally
get 4G/3G.
I bought a sim card working with Docomo in Japan (internet only, no voice) and hoped for the best as 2G does not
work in Japan.
Unfortunately I am stuck with 4G/2G. Once when tweaking the settings I would see 4G and 2G/3G but it did not work and went back to 4G and 2G to my great disapointment.
I have seen a post from a guy in Singapore saying also he did get 4G and 3G using a beta of Nougat.
May be it depends on the networks, I have no clue.
I hope the S8 will get 4G / 3G as many people are looking for this feature.

Samsung says S8/S8+ will support 4G/LTE on both SIMS
Samsung clearly stated in their announcement on April 26, and in the specs on their website, that both SIM-1 and SIM-2 support 4G/LTE (FDD and TDD). However, when one SIM is on 4G, the other will be on 3G/2G. This is how my LG G4 works, and it's quite satisfactory, switching back and forth between China and the US. The only downside on the LG is that it does not support T-Mobile's LTE band, so it's on HSPA+ in the US, which isn't horrible, but LTE would naturally be better.. Looks like the S8/S8+ might have the same issue, as I don't see the 1700 band listed.
The following is directly from Samsung's website, for the dual SIM S8 and S8+
Bands++:
4G FDD-LTE: B1(2100),B2(1900),B3(1800),B4(AWS),B5(850),B7(2600),B8(900),B12(700),B13(700),B17(700),B18(800),B19(800),B20(800),B25(1900),B26(800),B28(700)
4G TDD-LTE: B38(2600),B39(1900),B40(2300),B41(2500)
3G WCDMA: B1(2100),B2(1900),B5(850),B8(900)
3G TD-SCDMA: B34(2010),B39(1880)
3G CDMA: BC0(800)
2G GSM: GSM850,GSM900,DCS1800,PCS1900
2G CDMA: CDMA800
++Support 4G Network in HK and China: FDD-LTE and TDD-LTE; 3G Network in HK: WCDMA; 3G Network in China: TD-SCDMA and WCDMA and CDMA. Subject to local network, data and messaging services. If one of the SIM Card is using 4G or 3G Band, the another SIM Card supports 3G or 2G band only, vice versa. Users can choose 4G or 3G network with either SIM 1 or SIM 2 without changing the SIM card

I had a Galaxy S7 Edge Dual SIM which supported 4G/3G/2G - SIM #1 and 2G Only -SIM #2 when I purchased the phone but recently with the Android N update it enabled 3G/2G support on SIM #2. On a recent trip to Korea and Japan I confirmed that SIM #2 did indeed support 3G as I was finally able to get dual SIM support in those countries (both Korea and Japan do not have 2G). This was not possible prior to the Android N update. I recently purchased a Galaxy S8 Dual (SM-G950FD) and the SIM Card Management menu shows 3G/2G on the SIM #2 so I believe this will work exactly like the Galaxy S7 Edge Dual SIM with Android N.
All current flagship phones supports 4G/3G, it's the current trend, and to accommodate the discontinue of the 2G network in some countries.
Does anyone know, if the specific S8 for China is dual sim active or not? @Chinauser
@Akram - The S8 is dual standby, as said in previous post, but have no additional info. Based on my research on both the S8 and LG G6, decided to order the dual SIM LG G6 (H870DS). Idk if it's a HW/SW limitation but 1st SIM 4G or 3G and 2nd SIM only 2G. To get 3G in 2nd SIM you need a Dual SIM Dual Active.
Mi5 is capable and it's dual standby, not dual active....
