[Q] Custom Ringtones & Notification Sounds? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm searching for a way to assign a custom MP3 ringtone for each contact on my 6P, just like I did for my Galaxy S3 & my Note 3. A free or paid Play Store app (doesn't matter which because I have that $50 Play store credit) would be ideal!
It's really bumming me out that the latest & greatest Nexus 6P just doesn't have that capability, or am I missing something blatantly obvious here?? For example, on my Note 3 when my Sister calls, I would hear Weird Al's "White & Nerdy". When my mother calls, I would hear "Like a G6". And when my boss calls, I would hear Cheech Marin's voice knocking on the door saying "It's me, Dave...D A V E!" His name actually is Dave, so that just fits! You get the idea.
Any suggestions for an app that would watch for incoming calls, then play the ringtone I would assign to that person? I've already transferred all of the MP3's, notifications & ringtones from my Note 3 to the appropriate folders in the 6P AND they are selectable for a default sound, but no custom contact ringtones or custom notifications sounds for each event.
Not rooted (yet, but most likely will in time) so still all stock with build MDA89D
You help will be greatly appreciated. And if I'm missing the obvious here, please feel free to laugh at my pain!

I use Light Flow for that. Other folks here have posted that it works for them without root for LED customizations, but I haven't received my 6P yet to test it myself... If it works, it should do both custom LED and sound notifications.

If you go to contacts and edit the contact you want once you hit edit touch the 3 dots it should show set ringtone in the options thats just for incoming calls only not for messages

That solves the custom ringtone problem. How did I miss that one?? I tried to edit the contacts as you said, but I completely missed the three dots menu. [face palm!]
But Light Flow sounds as the way to go. I'm used to having a blue LED for missed calls, green for text messages & red for voicemail. If the 6P has those options already built-in, then a lil customization of those couldn't hurt!

On that note, it is *ridiculous* that Android doesn't have the possibility of individual text tones.

Use Rings Extended in Play Store...can assign any ringtone or notification, ANYWHERE

If you use Hangouts for SMS, you can set a custom tone for each conversation. I still prefer Light Flow, though, because it lets me change LED colors, blink rates, and durations per notification type/person. It also allows similar options for custom vibrations.

I may get the anti VZW hate on this one....but I use Verizon messages. Can use individual text tones on that. I like the app as when I switch roms, it syncs all texts and pic messages for me. No need to back them up and they are also on my tablet. However, I agree that it's BS that google does not make this a feature in the stock messaging app. I used to use Hangouts before switching to VZW messages.

Just tried this with no joy. Only the stock ringtones seem to work. Will we have to root to assign custom sounds?

If you go into the default messenger app
click on the thread with your contact
Hit the 3 dots in upper right
Select People and Options
Click Sounds
Select your custom notification tone

Got my 6P on Friday, and for the life of me couldn't find how to set this, even though I had it set on my Nexus 5. Thank you!

Then you don't know Android... Try again.
The solutions for messenger & hangouts are temporary. If you delete the conversation, they'll reset next time you get a message from that contact. If you want permanent solutions, you need something like textra or handcent.

I don't think it should be necessary with a third-party app to do that. On the iPhone the feature is build into the OS.

That's the stupidest argument ever! If you're gonna compare every feature to what the iPhone can do, why not get an iPhone?

Well, I'm just comparing ideas and that happens to be one that I like. I don't get why you react so aggressive to me saying that I would like it to be a core feature of Android. After all, you could do this on a Nokia 3310. I don't get why it is a bad thing to request these much more sophisticated devices to do the same. I won't ever get an iPhone an have been using Android for years - but the ring tone thing - I *personally* think that iPhone handles that better.

No one's being aggressive. I just think it's stupid to compare features that way. Well the iPhone has it, why can't I? Do you want a big round button on your phone too? Do you want an apple logo? The iPhone has them. And I'm going to assume you're semi intelligent, being that you are on these forums... Making a request, as you put it, will get you nowhere here. Messenger & hangouts are Google Apps. No one here is going to add those features for you. So your request here is gonna get you a 3rd party app. But since you already said you didn't want that, guess you're out of luck. Enough on the that. Good day & good luck in your search for a 1st party app that has those features

I know all those things. That's why I've been a Handcent user for years.

Here is the solution.
Download a file explorer app such as ES file explorer.
That's it.
Now where you chose to select ringtone, you will be ask to chose from..
1. ES file Explorer
2. Media Storage
Choose ES file explorer and find the song you wanna put as ring tone or alarm tone.
That's it.. Work done for free.
This even works for individual contact tone.
Open the contact in the edit mode..
Click on those three dots for further options.
Set ringtone and then chose the ES file Explorer option.. ?

Why do my custom ring tones and notifications reset themselves sometimes? I'm using stock, locked, unrooted N6P.

[Q] Custom text notifications per contact?

I'm looking for a way to assign a custom notification sound to a specific contact. Like assigning a custom ringtone to a contact so that when they call you know who's calling without looking at the phone. I want to do that with text messages, specifically for one very important business contact.
Want to know this as well. Haven't seen this option since I was on sprint with a sanyo phone, about 6 years ago.

Try RingoLite in the market. I had it for a lil while and it was great, it does both ringtones and sms tones.

Don't no about a app but i think cm10.1 has that option , u MAY be able to extract phone app and get it to work on stock ROM .
I guess it will feel strange ! pretty awkward ! although extract the phone.apk from cm10.1 ! though !
Changing system apks on stock will affect your ability to accept and install new otas and will further cause problems doyen the road. Flash the rom. Stock rom is overrated and I don't know why people want to stay on it and they want the features of a custom rom.

My only issues with my Nexus 4 are...
1. No macro on camera.
2. No stabilization on camera.
3. There is a delay when starting a phone call where the other end can not hear you when you strt talking, using either T-mobile, Talkatone, Groove IP or Vonage.
the call vibrate is handy, better than having your phone glued to your ear.
Did you check the dialer settings? Open the dialer, Menu button > Settings and check Vibrate on Answer. Unless that's not available on stock (I'm using CM10.1)
And yes, this is actually very useful. Saves me the trouble of lifting the phone up to my ear only to hear a voicemail box.

It's not available on stock.
People still use Voicemail box? Just tie it to Google Voice's Voicemail. It transcribes your voicemail as well as allows a press play to hear. No more of that "press 1, press * to delete, etc"
On the 4.3 version, does this feature exist?

I've never had a problem with getting 2 notifications for every message with GoSMS. It blows away the stock messaging app -- especially if you put it in Normal mode.
Other than that, not sure how to get Emojii.

really? on every phone ive had the group chat comes up as 2 notifications no matter what, it first gets a message and downloads it a half a second later and goes off again tried all the setting and could not get it working properly
I believe you can install an "emoji keyboard" from the the app store which will give you emoji everywhere in the OS. Ive never tried them since I don't use emoji, except in whatsapp....the significant other insists on using them

I have the same problem as him, albeit I don't mind that much. But I get the message as a multimedia message (1 notif) then it automatically downloads (2nd notif) so for every text it makes 2... kinda annoying but yeah.

Lock Screen Messaging Preview Help

I seem to be going insane at the moment after just plumping for a Samsung Galaxy 6 Edge + moving from an Iphone 5.
Yes the screen, the speed, is all incredible and yes everything seems to take longer at the moment because Im coming from a lot of years of using the Iphone system.
But there is one simple thing that I just cannot seem to resolve at the moment despite trying several apps, several settings etc, and its just so simple I cant believe there is not just one setting somewhere for it.
All I want on my lockscreen when I press the power switch is to see the following.
What message I have
What emails I have
What Whats Apps I have.
I want to see who they are all from, ie the senders name, or the contact name thats in my address book ... but nothing else, no preview, no nothing, just
I have a Whats app from Ben
a Whats app from James
an email from Ebuyer
a text message from Suzie.
Thats it!
Why cant I have this? By all means call me an idiot and tell me the screen its on and I will laugh at myself along with everyone else, but I just cant see where this is at the moment. All I can get is either previews of all the messages etc, or just plain I have 2 emails, 1 message and a whats app, but not who they are from.
Can someone PLEASE help with this? Its driving me mad !! I have a fingerprint on the device by the way and I dont want to be able to reply to anything without unlocking the device.
Any and all help very much appreciated, as not being able to accomplish this just makes my android experience dead in the water at the moment.
Do you mean like that? If so; » Settings » Lock screen and security » Notifications » Notifications on lock screen; 'Show content'
No all I want to see are senders details,no content at all. I want to see that a text or what's app or email is from Jeff, but not the first line of Jeff text etc as it might be private. I don't get why there isn't a simple setting for this like on iPhone, its absolutely crazy.

Early I was used SmartTone app on Galaxy S8 with Oreo and it worked (com.olayinka.smart.tone, now it unavailable on the GooglePlay. and founded .apk don't work on Note9).
...funny wish, I know: o)

I have the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 UnRooted SM-N960W Snapdragon Variant Canadian Model. 6GB/128GB Blue running Android Pie first stable release. I found an app that works, at least on mine it does, just tested it 4 or 5 times having my girlfriend call me. Make sure you turn off "battery optimization" so it does not get put to sleep, also make sure all permissions are granted. "change system settings" must be set to allowed, and notifications must be set to allowed. Here is the app I tested & works fine for me. Hope this helps you out. Message me if you need anything.
Cheers

You can select random Ringtones, random sms/mms tones, and if you buy app it removes ad banner, and let's you pick random notifications for any app as well. Works fine for ringtones in the free version, never tried sms/mms tho. I have my tones in .m4a file format & they may need to be a certain length, not sure, mine are full songs so 2+ minutes and had no issues. Cool idea, thanks for the help request, led me to something new.
Thank you, TWiiTCH! This application has a slightly weird interface, but it works!

Unfortunately this app doesn't work anymore. And it's a bit outdated. I used to have this app for a couple of years and it was great, actually - the best. But it obviously doesn't support Android 13 on both of my phones.
For now I use this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplycomplexapps.randomnotificationsounds for randomization of notifications and this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.leonidbuzmacov.ringtonerotator for ringtones.
But RRM was better because of all-in-one app and it has great features with special conditions for concrete apps, current location etc.
