Slow app performance - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone noticed any performance issues running apps on their MXS/MXP?
I've found one particular Play-store app that performs very poorly on my device, compared to running on my wifes 2 year old LG G2.
The particular app I'm referring to is called 'Human to cat translator' (here). On my MXS it consistently takes 50 seconds(!) to get past the initial 'loading' screen before it's usable. On my wife's LG G2 it takes 3 seconds. (Once loaded, it's fine though.)
All criticism of my questionable taste in apps aside - does anyone know why this would be? Is anyone else willing to test the app and see if it's the same for you?

Tried it twice, took 25 seconds each time fwiw.

Thanks for trying it. Wonder why it takes so long on the MXS, when an old G2 loads up in 3 seconds?

Are you still on KitKat on the LG phones. If so maybe there is something the game does not like about lollipop. Just guessing.

Actually, yes - the G2 is still on KK. Wonder if that's relevant?
Going to try some other devices this week if I can (including a Nexus 5 on Android 5.11).

Dalvik vs ART?

Well the MSX runs Lollipop which uses ART, so I would have expected it to be faster than the G2 (still on Dalvik) in that respect.

Google Play store loads app pages very slowly on the G2. Anyone else?

For example, when I am looking at my own list of installed apps and then select one, it pauses for 2-3 seconds before jumping to the app's page. This happens consistently, but I've never seen such a delay on my other devices (Nexus 4, Nexus 7). Does anyone else's seem to pause there a lot longer than it should?
Other than that, the phone is very fast!

I'm having the same problem as well. Most of the time I'll click on an app and the phone just sits... and waits... until it finally opens up the actual app page. Really annoying but glad I'm not the only one that's noticed it.

I wish that was the case, but I can put it side by side my Nexus 4 or Nexus 7, and it's WAY slower than those. It always happens on my G2, so there is something about the play store version or the LG custom software on the device that's causing these delays. I believe it happens in some other apps too. Tapatalk, for instance, seems to delay longer after selecting a forum as well. Very weird.
I have the same problem on all my phones. I think its playstore but sporadic enough so you may think it is only the new phone.
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk 2
I've had the same thing on both my G2 and my RAZR Maxx. Think it might be the play store.
I've noticed app pages loading slowly on Google Play for the past few/several weeks when I owned a Sprint Galaxy S4 up to getting the LG G2 earlier this week. Now being a new owner of a new phone on a different network, the only constant in the equation is Google Play.

iphone 3s is beating my lg g2....

I hate to admit it but.. my phone before gnexus, which was iphone 3gs, is beating my lg g2 in terms of overall speed. Every button i press takes noticeably longer to register and always seems to be the case with every android phone i owned unless its freshly wiped....
How does this even make sense? the sheer hardware..... even with gnexus, i must have tried 20 roms and they didnt vary much. Screen size, hardware, camera, customizability all means nothing if the phone is damn slow no matter which gen/os/rom im using....
Who else experiences this?
Never experienced this. My friend had a 3Gs and even compared to my iPhone 4 at the time it was super slow and laggy. Not sure why your phones lag but my G2 is the smoothest and fastest phone I've ever had.

you're telling me, when you press recent tabs and click an app, it opens up immediately? no no jitters and lag?
when you press home, its instant?
Yeah pretty instant. I haven't experienced any lag like I did with my GS3.
The only app I hate now is the official YouTube app, it takes about 3 sec before lunching.
But most of the apps open instantly.
Edit:
I am using DROID Dna, not lg g2. So I don't know if it's the same case as lg g2.

My G2 is insanely fast. Every normal task is instant. YouTube is slow yes. But that must be bad coding. I have a 3GS I got free from work. And I can't use it because its so damn slow.
Sounds a bit odd considering every and I mean every review gives this phone high marks for performance and how it never lags. And a 3gs of all to try to compare this to. Now that is a complete load of crap.
Being that I have had every phone in the last 3years (check my posts) I can say without a doubt this has been one of the best. The only phone that has been better in fluidity was or is my droid maxx. (New one that is.)
You obviously have a defective phone if a 3gs is beating it in terms of performance.
Sent from my VS980 4G using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I was recently playing around with an iPhone 4s and besides the (compared to the G2) tiny screen it also reacted notably slower than my G2 to every task and input. As was said before, only a screwed up G2 can be slower than an iPhone other than maybe the newest.

you do realize android had animation delays right? To turn off the transition delays enable developer options and change the window animation/transition animation/animator duration to .5 or off. That will speed stuff up a lot.

The speed is still same, now there is just a gap of inactivity and more noticeable lag. My device scores around 34000 in antutu ..... it's frustrating how long simple tasks like opening up recents panel to clicking one and to get it to open. Doesn't even compare to iphone 3s.
O yeah, I noticed when i click recent apps nav button, it shows an image of no recent apps for a split second and then shows up my apps. Is this normal?

I just disabled the LG keyboard and my phone is ultra smooth now

Like the title says, I changed over to swiftkey keyboard lastnight and after rebooting to get the old keyboard to stop running my phone is now EXTREEEEEEEMLY responsive and the animations are now REAAAAALY smooth!!
It's been 24 hours now and it's still blowing my mind.
Just thought i would share this here incase anyone else wants to give it a go.
EDIT: just to increase the success rate, I decided to post a few simple steps.
1. Download new keyboard of choice.
2. Go into G3 options and set the new keyboard to default.
3. Reboot (important).
4. Hopfully by now you're enjoying some butter smoothness.
I looked through the thread and out of everyone that reported if this helped or not, is about 50% say this helps and 50% say no difference.
The worst that can happen from trying this is wasting 30 seconds from your life.
Here's a quick video i made showing the difference in stutter & response time of my notification bar, it helps in all areas of the phone, not just the notification bar but i just wanted to show an example.
You can easily see the increased response times in my video. But It's really hard to see the stutter difference in the video since it was only recorded with a 30 fps camera, though in real life it's improved a ton too.
For my testing conditions, I have 100% same apps & i shutdown and coldbooted and let the phone sit exactly 10 mins to let the os settle before testing for each test.

After you download a new keyboard, make sure you set it up as the default keyboard in the G3s options then reboot for it to completly disable the LG keyboard.
I like the LG keyboard too, like i mean i personally think it's the nicest looking keyboard i've used yet, but if it does that to my phone no thanks.

Hmm, unlike many of the so called tweaks out there this does seem to help. LG stock items do seem rather memory and CPU hungry.

It's funny you said that, because i thought exactly the same thing haha.
I've done near everything in the book to make my phone faster & more efficent including debloat of more than 130 apps and only having 3 running processes in the end seemed to have little to no effect, and then this happened.
My goal was to save battery life, but enstead i realized i had just REMOVED my stutter which is even better  if i coulda hoped for ANYTHING for this phone this was it!!
What about battery life after disabling stock keyboard? I mean if its affect so much at performance of the phone its probably affect on battery too...

I'm currently testing that out right now as we speak under extremely controled conditions, I'll post back the results when i'm done.
Well I don't know if it is just placebo or what but to me apps like gallery are opening smoother and it does seem to be a fair bit better so thanks op.
i dont know if i see any difference.
Uninstalling Lg Stock launcher makes it even more smoother!
I used titanium to uninstall it....

First thing I did was download Google keyboard. I personally hate the LG keyboard. For a phone so big, the keys on the keyboard are surprisingly small. I get that you get more keys, but I can't get used to it and the predictive text is almost comical.
it is indeed a bit faster. I have ART enabled, so everything was already running pretty smooth.
Next test: disable ART and install xposed with some app settings, G3 tweaksbox and 'nomoreoverlay'....
Now how does it compare to a Nexus 5 in smoothness?

I don't think that's a fair comparison. Let's wait for the unlocked bootloader. And a good AOSP rom. Then we can compare those devices...
It mainly the LG apps that are making this phone slow. The LG gallery is killing me, its so slow. I can't even replace it became the camera needs it.
I don't exactly understand what is "unlocking the bootloader", I thought rooting the device made everything possible on the device, but it's probably not the place to ask for the difference between the two.
However I may ask why is it taking so long? The phone has been out for months now.
Did it take so much time for the LG G2?
As I remember I have been adding new ROMs to my Nexus 5 a few months after purchasing it and i bought it on very early January which was two months after it was out.

I am not an expert but I think there's probably a tweak for doing that? Like freezing the lg app and grabbing the kit Kat gallery app then resetting the association in the app settings?

Allows you to flash ROMS. Bootloader unlock policy depends on the manufacturer. LG is infamous for not facilitating this.

Yes, it is VZW model.
The general consensus is to hold off on it until lollipop, but I will probably try it at some point anyway.

Yeah, I ran into the same thing. The interesting thing is that on first reboot it had to optimize some 250 apps, I did a restart to see if it would do the same, this time it is optimizing again but only 87.
I almost never reboot my phone so I will try it out for a couple days, see if there is any battery gains or losses.
So far, I have seen no benefit. I do hate that most every time I restart the phone, it seems to optimize the same 25 files increasing the boot time. I have switched back to Dalvik for until specific and substantial advantages are verified and posted. If miliseconds reduction in UI response are the only benefit, I am not in that big of a hurry.
Hope this helps.
Only thing I noticed is that S health crashes now that ART is enabled. Which I normally wouldn't care about, except I'm one of the few that likes the heart rate feature. -___-

App Optimization Issue

I've noticed that every time I reboot my Turbo, the device always goes through App Optimization. This wouldn't be that big of an issue except that it takes like 10 minutes and I've never had this problem with my past devices.
I suspect that this has to do with the fact that I'm running ART. However, I did the same with my last device and it didn't do app Optimization every time I rebooted.

Im not to worried about art not working on lollipop because i believe it will. I think the only issue I will have is to make sure all the apps that I used are optimized to run on art. I notice there are still quite a few that I still use that haven't yet.
Well I had lollipop on the nexus 6 and on the moto g. It's nothing special, kit kat is smoother and less bugs. The nexus 6 had a ton of problems. ART only reduces memory usage, other than that it's about the same as dalvik.

I have a Nexus 7 and performance increased substantially.
I also have friends that disagree with you re: the N6. To each their own of course.
Seems to me, that while some apps are not compatible at all with ART, some just need more help. Could these be the ones that need recompiling on each boot?
My Droid Maxx takes 30 sec to do the same 5 apps on each boot!
