What you guys think about the battery life? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know its hard to say but do you think these results are accurate?
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Google-Nexus-6P-battery-life-test-score-average-in-active-use_id74853
If so its kind of a let down. I was hoping with a bigger battery, marshmallow, and pure Android that it would perform better then the average.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

I would hold off on judging battery life until you have the phone yourself.
There's a lot of things that go into play when seeing how long the phone will last. People use the phone differently, and you have to remember there will always be more optimizations in the future and developers compiling kernels that enhance battery life as well.
That's the beauty of a Nexus, development.

The guy that has one already that started a thread was getting pretty good results. Even 6 hours SOT at one point. And I believe, dont quite me. Phone arena just uses a program to test battery. Not day to day use. Doze would help out with this.

Yup.... And another for 5hrs 30 over 36 hours... Pretty remarkable
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk

Those simulated tests where they loop video, or have an engine for loading websites are just trashola.
Never compares to real person usage
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk

I think most of reviews had battery life results between 4 to 6h SOT in real life usage (no simulated test)
Of course many things can change the result (WIFI vs LTE - screen brightness - games/camera vs soft usage, etc)
5 hours SOT average, is good enough for me !

Nexus 4 Battery Life

Hey Guys,
A bunch of people are complaining about the battery life on Nexus 4. I've been waited for a couple days since I got the device, to have enough confident about the battery before I make any post here. Yes, the phone battery drain pretty fast on the first few cycles. After a bunch more charges later, let me tell this, the battery life did get significantly better. It lasted about 10-15 hr depends on the load of the usage.
Here is my typical day, off the charge at 100% in the morning, listen to a few songs, checking emails, and messages while getting ready for school. About an 30mn to 1hr of internet browser and youtube videos while on the bus. By 1-2pm the battery drop the about 70-80%. I put the phone in silent mood til i'm done with all my classes. On the way back home on the bus, I listened to a bunch of music, web browsing, maybe a few phone calls, texts or games.
Compare to my old phone, Samsung Galaxy S2 T989, im impressed with the Nexus 4 battery life. My Galaxy S2 battery always die on the bus coming back home. What I'm trying to get at: if you're a light to medium user like me, then get this phone. I was hesitate at first because I always have bad experience with android battery life. But Google seem to get its OS right with this nexus device, mainly because the battery drain minimum while in sleeping mood.
Can you post your Nexus 4 battery performance screenshot if you have been using the phone for more than a few days ?
Is there supposed to be a question being asked? Or a statement as this is in the Q&A forum.
I agree with you on many points. People need to wait at least 5 to 7 days for the battery charge to fully kick in. The first days mean absolutely nothing as it is still being aligned plus the user is still installing apps and setting up their phone.
There are some notable problems in the default kernel that uses more battery Usage than normal too.

From full battery to this overnight + breakfast usage. Rasbean + Matr1x v3.0. Never seen anything like it. Coming from the GN, this phone is a different dimension altogether. On any aspect..
Had phone for 5 days. Drained phone to 10% then fully charged. Moderate to light use made it through a day.
Stock rooted + Franco Kernel.

Depends on how much screen time you got, which you didn't show us.
The trick is to be careful about using mobile data when signal is bad, I switch to WiFi when home to avoid unnecessary battery drain.

What is this obsession for battery life, it lasts me well through the day with moderate/heavy use. I charge it at night (if needed) and unless you are homeleless this shouldn`t be a problem. It`s a great phone and i enjoy using it.

I thought the same until my N4 actually arrived, it seems battery life is abysmal compared to my Optimus 2x which didnt have anything really spectacular in regards to battery size. On my O2x I could get 1.5 - 2.5 days depending on use, hitting atleast 1 .5 which was good and acceptable for me (I can charge at night anyways) however my N4 doesnt even reach 13 hours on similar usage!.
I am quite a light users of smartphones however I do like to have a power phone when it comes to using it on the basis of smoothness and capabilities if I need to say do work on my phone, I rarely play games though. Main usage is 2 email accounts on poll 1 hour steps, a third account that is an exchange server and polls in 30 minute steps and thats about it with some brief browsing and a handful of texts (been a quite time since I got my N4), this is less usage than my O2x and yet it still performs alot worse!
I was hoping of staying with stock as I was expecting it to finally be good, comparing it to LG stock attempts it is but battery life isnt . I will be trying the combo Vangelis13 mentioned, raspbean and matr1x kernel as that seems like a great mix however Parandroid has been on the table and it seems like alot of being are getting good results so I will try it soon .
If I can get more than a day of usage I would be really happy, if I was playing games or doing really heavy tasks I wouldnt expect it to last but right now it is doing pretty much nothing and dieing far to fast!.
One thing I've noticed since coming to N4 from S2 is that phone calls drain battery much more significantly on the N4. I could make an hour long call on my S2 and it would use no more than a couple of percent battery but the N4 used 15% for an hour long phone call the other night.
If I didn't own a nexus 4 and came to this thread to find out about it's battery life I would expect it to be good.
Point is you guys are misinforming everyone. The battery is mediocre and that's it.
It won't last a full day if you use it constantly and I do need two charges / day many times.
Let me put it this way, you will only get roughly 3 hours of screen time on stock everything. If that is good for you then it's will have good battery life, if not then you will say it's got poor battery life.

you are perfectly right.
I come from an iPhone 4s, which I changed because the battery life wasn´t that great and I thought it was time to try something new.
Got the N4 last friday and played around with it during the weekend.
Monday, tuesday and wednesday this week... none of these days I´ve been able to come back home with the phone still on.
I wake up at 7.30am and I usually am back home at 6pm.
In my opinion, and honestly should be in everyone´s opinion, 10 hours of battery life are unacceptable, whatever the usage is (considering that 7.30 of those 10 hours I was at work)
I have till friday this week to return it, which is a pity because the phone is great
i get 5-6 hours sot..
rom is omnirom 5.1.1 hellscore kernel b73.
100mv undervoltage hellsactive governer.
think 7 would be possible if google services would not take a quarter of the battery.
the screen is not taking that much battery as one would think.
think most issues with battery life come from fake original battery replacements.
had 3-4 sot using "original" battery. but after replacing with real genuine from official lg spare parts shop 5-6...

[Q] Battery life compared to capacity?

I'm interested in getting the phone, but there was something that really caught my eye. I was wondering why a phone like this, with 3000mah, gets only a little bit more battery life in stats compared to other phones with lower capacities, like the nexus 5, with only 2300mah but around the same battery life.
You're kidding right? G2 is well known to have the best battery out there.

Not sure where you are seeing that the G2 gets just a little bit better battery life than the Nexus 5, but if you look at several reviews that are out there, specifically ones where they do standardized battery run down tests, you will see that the G2's battery life is excellent in comparison to pretty much any other phone that are out there. On engadget for example, the G2 lasted 16 hours on their battery run down test while the Nexus 5 only lasted 7 hours and 20 minutes on the same test. Also in their review of the G2, the phone easily lasted 20 hours under 'heavy' usage while they only got 12 hours on the N5 with 'normal' usage.

Nexus 5 is nowhere near in terms of battery life

Battery life

The early reports are showing only 3.5-4 hours of SOT. If so, this is shameful on a 3450mah battery. Can anyone say they have seen better than this?
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Look in the review thread. Some reviews say 6+ hours, some say less. Depends dramatically on cell signal strength, screen brightness, and application cpu use so review numbers are really only useful for comparison to other phones that were tested the exact same way.
Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
In Dave Lee's review, he got 5.5 hours of SoT during a span of 32 hours.
Battery life is extremely subjective, most reviewers will have vastly different usage requirements out of their devices.
There is also countless optimizations that can be done to further improve battery life, most reviewers don't know this and tend to not include it in their reviews and thus end up with lower than expected battery life.
I can kill a smartphone in 2 hours with extremely heavy use, recording 4k and playing games will easily do this while you can take the same device and get 5 hours of use browsing the web and reading forums.
It's all extremely subjective and unfortunately you can't accurately predict the battery life you will get simply because your usage, signal strength and many other factors vary from other users.

You mean changing the dpi? I gues it's not hard. There's videos on youtube how to change your phone's dpi through adb without root... But I don't think it will have a difference in batterylife though...
Yes, sorry I did mean DPI. Having to power more pixels doesn't equate to more power?
I don't think changing the DPI has any effect on the number of pixels being used, since the entire screen is still being used. More likely it reduces load on the CPU/GPU by not having to render as high of a resolution.

But this is amoled and only the non-black pixels use power, not every pixel.
First full day on the phone 3:00am-3:57pm not touching a charger, currently at 3h 33m 28s of screen on time using 468mAh and 23% battery remaining (calculated to 4.5 hours SOT for a full 100%). This includes web browsing, facebook, inbox, navigation with screen off, audible book downloads on wifi with screen off, 1 hour of audible playing with screen off, playing 30 min of games, running 2 benchmarks, tweaking settings, 1.5 hours of screen off speaker phone, various xda posts. With the amount of work my phone has done I am perfectly happy with that run time.
Battery usage after first full charge, you can see doze working over night where it lost just 2%
How on earth are you people getting 6 hours sot? Don't get me wrong. That's what we should be getting in such a large battery but I'm trending at 4 hours and have perfect signal

Let's hope Kirin 950 is efficient because with the right setup, Mate 7 does well and I see no reason why Mate 8 should be much different.
See how Mate 8 owners compare, once the phone is in your hands and rooted etc.

the biggest worry is as always the modem...they drain a lot battery.
not many people think about it since it is "hidden" statistics

Running on lenovo,Huawei mate 8,Note5, S6
Epic battery for me yesterday, first full charge, performance mode on all day, 19 hours up time with 6hrs39mins screen-on and 11% remaining when I turned in for bed. Looks like 7 hours screen-on over a full day should be doable, in a straight line I would think 8hrs+.
Similar again yesterday, 18hrs on battery, 5hrs 20mins screen-on, 23% battery remaining.

Your battery life does not say us anything unless you are using wifi or 3g/4g ?
you would see that in the mate 7 thread people using only wifi would get very superior screen on time while we normal people using 4G
would get more realistic battery life around 4-5 hours.
I hope you do not use wifi since that consume a lot less power as you might understand, and the modem
is a "hidden" battery drainer which is not shown in battery statistics ( I wish it did )
Mostly on WiFi, but if I contrast with other devices we can still make a meaningful comment.
My Note 4, in the same use, would not reach 4 hours of screen-on time. Neither would the 6P that I had. The P8Max would hit around 5 hrs.
So far the battery life here is best I have experienced on Android.

IF you have been using mostly wifi I would be little bit worried about the battery life when using 4G for data.
Also the software is still in early phase ..so big improvements can be made still in most areas.. battery life and camera etc.
battery life also depends on your usage pattern concerning apps. independent from wifi vs 3g/4g ull get far less SOT if u use cpu/gpu intensive apps all the time. so a direct comparison with other devices from the same user with identical usage patterns makes sense

Mind posting more screen shot of battery life of your usage? I am very interested. Battery chart + sot. Thanks.
I'm sure with time and people getting their hands on the phone, battery life will only improve. I avg 1d 4-5 hours with 6-8hr sot on my note 3 with 4g but the phone has been out for a long time
The Note 3 had pretty good battery life, from memory when I moved to Note 4 there was a reasonable regression there.
After a couple of charges and latest firmware update my battery life has been stunning. Yesterday/day before yesterday I went 36hrs on a single charge and had 6.5hrs screen-on. That's totally unprecedented on Android for me. Today I am down to 60% and have had 4.5hrs screen-on. For me at least is a new high bar for Android battery life.

Yesterday's battery report - 18hrs on battery, 7hrs20mins SOT, 17% remaining (another hour and a half or so or SOT for general use I would think). Indoors, WiFi, low screen brightness etc, but nevertheless destroying every other Android I've ever owned. Spent 50mins playing some emulator games towards the end - Wipeout Pure (PPSSPP) and Fire Emblem Path of Radiance (Gamecube game in dev build of Dolphin). They got the phone warm and were, as you would expect, much heavier drains than browsing and so forth (probably more so than higher end native Android games as they stretch the CPU as well). For those interested Path of Radiance played seemingly perfect for the first level proper of gameplay, overclock set to 0.2.

Battery life

I did buy one..... waiting but I hope the battery life is going to be excellent.
The size of the battery is not huge and even though they say excellent battery life Google does not give you stats.
Screen on "50%" how long....
Can you wake up 6am set the phone in charger at midnight and still have battery?
Me I typically play a game, use my language learning programs a few hours a day.
Check maybe 20 emails, and 20 text messages.
Location services and bluetooth are always on. (need them for Play services and Android Wear)
And I believe and I hope the device proves me wrong but if I know it will be a long time between charges I will need to modify usage.
Is the type of usage I go through unreasonable ?
Yet all they say is you can get 7 hours of usage (what type of usage?) in 15 minutes.
So you are in the airports all day the battery is at 20% and you need to have the charger with you and find an outlet.
1) do not always have the charger handy
2) can not always find A/C
Does anybody really expect better battery life than with other phones ?
I am wrong Google did post some stats
3,450 mAh battery
Standby time (LTE): up to 23 days
Talk time (3g/WCDMA): up to 32 hours
Internet use time (Wi-Fi): up to 14 hours
Internet use time (LTE): up to 14 hours

They stated similar stats when they released the 6P (the shop page was deleted so I can't paste them) and I got one....
Best screen-on-time I can get is 5 hours (with custom rom, custom kernel and a lot of system tweaks).
Don't rely on those stats, they were (in the best case) made under ideal conditions (probably in a lab) or (and that's rather the case) just calculated and without promise....
I am somewhat underwhelmed with the 6P battery life, but I'm stock as I can't root per company policies.
Hoping the Pixel XL will be better. Or at least same... If it is worse, then it will be going back in the 14 day return window.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Potentially we're looking at better stats.
Same size battery in a smaller body with a smaller screen and Supposed CPU optimisations, could explain the underclock.
My 6p makes it through the day without a charge, but I'm never far from an outlet, car charger or power bank just in case. Now that I've USB C proofed my home and office the rapid charging serves its purpose.
We've all seen the garbage spouted about days of battery life before and usage varies so much per user it's hard to compare. As they say the proof is in the pudding so we'll soon see, the price definitely isn't going up so why not wait and see?

Why not rely on Google's internal battery life tests?
They did the same for the 6P, so they can be compared.
All that matters in the end is how it really works for you, also stats are always overly optimistic. You buy a car an the dealer says the car is rated 5 litres per 100 km and every time the best your car does is 7 litres per 100km
What I had to do in the past is when I know I will be travelling without easy access to a charger is ration battery usage.
The stats though are encouraging hopefully and only time will tell is my next device I will not have to ration too much.
I really miss removable batteries remember the carefree way I used devices in the past with huge Zerolemon batteries. They will like sell a case for the Pixel XL but a case that adds battery capacity is not as elegant as just using a bigger battery.
The reviews on the battery life seem pretty terrible so far and is really worrying me as it was my only concern. I have been rocking a Hauwei Mate 8 recently, which I consistently get around 7 hr SOT. Reviews for Pixel XL are coming out at 3.5-4 hr, which is not good for how big it is. It has only a slightly smaller battery than the S7 Edge, but the Edge performs much better, I was getting 5-5 .5 hr SOT with my Edge before switching to Mate 8. Google Assistant always being present and doing stuff may be a pretty severe drain. Just as someone else mentioned, nice that we have a 15 day return window.

3-4 hours SOT sucks. Im getting 6 hours on 6p and 5 on Nexus 6
SOT is dependent on multiple factors, like what apps are running in background and what you do on the phone. Web browsing habits of sites visited, some sites have a lot going on.

Where are you seeing these 3.5-4 hr SOT reviews??
Many of the reviews that came out yesterday gave the Pixel highly positive ratings on battery. MKBHD said he got 6hrs SOT on full brightness, Dieter at the Verge said it might be the best battery life of any phone he'd ever used. Wired and a couple others also noted it as a high point. But then Mossberg said the smaller Pixel got so-so battery, and I think one of the Android Authority guys also called it average.
So... it sounds like basically any other Android phone. Varies highly for different people.

Pretty sure the AA review, he was getting 3.5-4 hours for battery life and called it good/above average, which is not. I remember his specifically because that is where I got the idea that google assistant could be having a large impact if used heavily, which he said he was using heavily. I don't remember MKBHD saying 6 hours but I would have to go rewatch. I know I saw at least 2 reviews that said 3.5-4 ish and they both called it good. Which makes me worry that all the other reviews that called it good without giving specific numbers were under this same impression. I watched a crap ton of reviews, many didn't give specific stats. They must be comparing it to htc10, lg g5 and iphone to consider that good, leaving samsung as the only outstanding if they are considering that anywhere near good.
Turned my phone on right out of the box around 12pm and started using it and I hit over 3 hours of sot

I wouldn't put too much stock in the first charge out of the box but that is still not a good indication. No bueno. Guess I have two weeks to try it out.
I'm at 90% right now with 56 min screen on time. Just reading the news/web browsing. On wifi.
I'm happy.

That's what I have been wanting to hear! Would you be willing to post some screen shots of your battery life, etc before you plug her in tonight. How heavily have you been using the new assistant? have you done anything to customize your settings like turn off always listening or anything like that, adaptive screen brightness, etc?
MKBHD on Twitter
I got mine yesterday at 5pm, Used it straight, setting it up with everything turned on and screen @ %100 (setup, music, movies, games) and it died after 5.5 hours. It was also on 86% charge when i got it.

Right now, no tweaks everything turned on (assistant, always listening, Bluetooth, wifi).
Mostly web browsing. 15 minutes or so of Clash Royale. On wifi most of the day. Auto brightness.
Looks like about 6h SOT if I took it to empty.
