Nexus 5x Battery Life Thread - Nexus 5X General

I havent seen one yet (battery stats thread), and it's probably one of the top important features of a phone.
Heres what I've found so far: Edit: Will update tomorrow with better results.
Please be sure to include:
-Battery graph screenshot
-Screen on time screenshot
-Detailed battery screenshot (the one with signal strength)
Also throw in whether or not you use google now, you location settings (battery saving/device only/high accuracy) and anything else you did or didn't do to get your battery life results.

You should put thumbnails anyway... the images are too big

I'd like to see usage stats for a full day of true mobile use (i.e. no WiFi) on LTE. I get the impression that it will be better than my Nexus 6 but would love to see evidence of that.

Agreed, hoping its notably better than moto x pure but im not sure thats going to be the case. especially on 6.0 vs 6.0.

So maybe just on par with moto x? Bummer

Nothing bad about 4-4.5hrs SOT in a day.

Odd.... In according to this review, the 5x ha an outstanding batter lifetime.... They're talking about 11h and 30minutes of web surfing via LTE with the screen at 150nits)

Yea its all over the place. Phone arena is putting the 5x as having the same endurance as the 6p and mxpe, which all have 2 hrs less then the galaxy s6. Again, according to their charts.

150 nits is how much on the brightness scale? 50%?

PA showed the display on the 5X to have 487nits. So maybe 150 is about 31%?

I think the best test without actually having the phone yet is to compare the battery life of the Nexus 5X to the original Nexus 5 of 2013 under the same test conditions.
The Ars Technica test showed the Nexus 5 getting 400 minutes and the Nexus 5X getting 548 minutes using the same test. That is a 37% improvement of the Nexus 5X compared to the Nexus 5.
The Phone Arena test showed the Nexus 5 getting 4 hr 50 min and the Nexus 5X getting 6 hr 25 min using the same test. That is a 33% improvement of the Nexus 5X compared to the Nexus 5.

Based on those comparisons I'd expect the Nexus 5X to get about 35% better battery life compared to the Nexus 5 during actual usage. When I first got my Nexus 5 I was getting just barely 4 hours screen on time. At a 35% increase the Nexus 5X should get like 5.5 hours screen on time.
I can live with that. Plus, stand by time should be improved with Doze.
My Nexus 5X is coming late next week. I'll just have to wait and see how it goes.

Thank for doing all the math. ☺ 5.5 hours seems like it would be on the extreme end of the scale but I would be more than happy if I could get 4.5 to 5 hours without trying.

Personal experience, I'm very disappointed with the battery life, having used my new Nexus 5X for a couple of days. Today, I used it from about 10am and it was down to about 19% by 4pm. I charged it for maybe 20 minutes and it was back up to over 50% - admittedly a fast recovery. But I just realised (about half past midnight) it has quietly died sitting next to me while I watched Netflix. As in, it's now off. What phone does that? "Doze" my ass!
I didn't think that a Nexus phone could realistically be this flawed when I pre-ordered it. I love everything else about it (except the slippery back that's itching to escape my hand), but I'm starting to feel cheated and I don't think I can get my money back. I wonder if there's any way a software update could help.

You'd have thought there would have been a greater improvement than that considering the larger battery.

35% increase in SOT is pretty good considering the battery only got ~20% bigger.

You have good service where ever you were at from 10am to 4pm today? Or even while it was down while you were watching Netflix. Cause poor service is going to kill any phone's battery.

Just letting you know, Google's return policy is 15 days from receiving the phone. You'll get a full refund, plus they'll provide you with a free return label.
I am trying the Nexus 5X because I can't stand the lag of the Galaxy S6. If I don't like the 5X, I'll probably just buy the 6P.

Ill be doing the same thing with my Moto X Pure I got a few weeks ago. I really like what I have, but the 5x is tempting as the 5 was such a great device.

Seems good so far. Have only had it 4 hours. Will revisit this thread in a week to better surmise

[Q] Battery life compared to capacity?

I'm interested in getting the phone, but there was something that really caught my eye. I was wondering why a phone like this, with 3000mah, gets only a little bit more battery life in stats compared to other phones with lower capacities, like the nexus 5, with only 2300mah but around the same battery life.
You're kidding right? G2 is well known to have the best battery out there.

Not sure where you are seeing that the G2 gets just a little bit better battery life than the Nexus 5, but if you look at several reviews that are out there, specifically ones where they do standardized battery run down tests, you will see that the G2's battery life is excellent in comparison to pretty much any other phone that are out there. On engadget for example, the G2 lasted 16 hours on their battery run down test while the Nexus 5 only lasted 7 hours and 20 minutes on the same test. Also in their review of the G2, the phone easily lasted 20 hours under 'heavy' usage while they only got 12 hours on the N5 with 'normal' usage.

Nexus 5 is nowhere near in terms of battery life
and 3000mah with Gram it's like having ~3500mah battery

Battery Life

Am I naive in expecting insane battery life? What am I missing here? Why isn't anyone really talking about how this should be crazy amounts? Most phones are closer to 3000mah.
I know the 810 is a hog, but it's an amoled display, not 4k, the oneplus two is only 3300, moto pure is only 3000, z5 2900, note 5 is 3000 as well. I have to believe with marshmellow (fingers crossed) and 3450 with an amoled display that's only 5.7" this is going to be insane, like 2 days on light use insane???
I'm hoping for some pretty good things from the battery life, i've got the Nexus 6 currently and it lasts me a day and a half with about 4 hours screen on time ( which is fine for me in all honesty )
This has a smaller display and a bigger battery, lets not forget that " sensor hub " that will help idle time immensely if it works as advertised
+Doze
+App standby
I've got a good feeling its gonna be a goodun
and this is the main reason why im picking the 6p over 5x because i strongly believe this has to be a two day battery life, everything is lining up so very good.
I'm expecting great stand by time, but once that screen is on, battery is going to drop like a rock. This was the case with the Moto X Pure at least. I was afraid to turn on that screen, my battery stats show a straight line going down.

Since I had a Nexus 5, I won't hold out any hope for any sort of battery life.
I'll take what I can get.

It has a 2.5k display like most other flagships, and AMOLED is the display technology, it has nothing to do with the resolution.
Running dev Preview 3 I've gotten much better standby and battery life as a whole. While I don't expect much better life out of the box than I already have once it's tweaked with the right kernels etc it better be way better than my current gen especially to give up wireless charging....

The battery is gonna be INSANE! Huge reason why I went to the 6p ! The 6 on avg for me had 5 hours SOT so I can only imagine what this will be. I have the m9 right now and I cannot wait to ditch this thing. Battery is horrid on it
This the #1 reason I am getting this phone. The Note 5 has TERRIBLE battery for me as I'm a power user.
My S6E reminds me of my Evo 4G with WiMAX turned on. It's got to be better than the old school need to plug in everywhere feeling I have lately.

My pure has pretty bad battery life if the gpu gets used at all. Out of all the devices with the 808 in the same category the pure has by far the worst battery life for whatever reason.
The nexus p hopefully won't have as much of an issue.
Beware of radio signals... That leaks a lot too.
I like gsm endurance test as a review...moto x got 63 hours. Note 5 is a beast... So your if getting poor life on that... It's an app of signal issue. Try running off LTE and test.
I figure a good comparison is moto xpe. Stock almost, same size, qhd.
So factor in battery is 15% larger, Amoled should save 15 % (see note 5 Amoled vs moto x pure LCD) and marshmallow should save 15%. All that is being conservative. Let's say -5% for snapdragon 810 vs 808. So total 40% better than moto xpe. Which gets on average 3.5 to 4.5 sot time (ignoring the under 3 and over 6 which is usually tweaking or terrible signals)
So this should average at minimum 40% better. So at least 5 hours sot.....and max of 7?
Sounds reasonable. All of this was guessing while I await the phone

So far from all the phones I've had, The OPO on KitKat had the best battery life.

ZTE Axon 7 - SOT and charging time (battery life)

I can't find nothing about the battery life
Also very nice to know, how fast is the charging time?

5h 45min screen on is pretty good considering it's a 2K display pushing many more pixels that the OP3.
1h 29m charge time isn't bad either considering the 4 phone that charged a bit faster all have smaller batteries to work with.
It better than most and more than acceptable to me.

My battery life today was about 6:30 screen on with heavy usage, about 12 hours usage (from about 6:45 am-6 pm with a 1 hour phone call on speaker phone) very satisfied with battery life and charge time. Coming from moto x pure.

That's promising. I'm planning to go with either the Axon 7 or the new Nexus Marlin to upgrade from my Moto X Pure. Battery life on the Pure is my biggest complaint. I can barely get 4 hours SOT. Most days are closer to 3. The Pure seems pretty quick to me though. I rarely have dropped frames so anything faster will be a bonus.
I really wish ZTE would confirm the status of the bootloader. I'm holding out in hopes they make an announcement soon. I'm also concerned I'll be annoyed with the Axon's MiFavor 4.0 ROM. I love how stock the Pure's OS is.
I'm on Verizon so the OP3 is a no-go for me. Although it sounds like Axon 7 owners on Verizon are having issues of their own. Hopefully the issues are just because the CDMA networks haven't approved the Axon 7 yet.
I'm getting constant battery drain on my new phone in UK.
It lost 21% of power doing nothing last night. I also had enabled power save settings.

My SOT is getting better. Achieving 6 Hours easily.
6h in 20h for 1440p screen is good but pls post some screenshots
Yeah, I noticed the battery life improved as the days wore on... Might be like when you install a new rom, you need to give it a week to settle before battery life stabilizes....
How the heck is everyone measuring SOT?? I don't see it in the stock battery stats. I'd like to avoid 3rd party apps to measure this. Am I missing something?

Battery life

I did buy one..... waiting but I hope the battery life is going to be excellent.
The size of the battery is not huge and even though they say excellent battery life Google does not give you stats.
Screen on "50%" how long....
Can you wake up 6am set the phone in charger at midnight and still have battery?
Me I typically play a game, use my language learning programs a few hours a day.
Check maybe 20 emails, and 20 text messages.
Location services and bluetooth are always on. (need them for Play services and Android Wear)
And I believe and I hope the device proves me wrong but if I know it will be a long time between charges I will need to modify usage.
Is the type of usage I go through unreasonable ?
Yet all they say is you can get 7 hours of usage (what type of usage?) in 15 minutes.
So you are in the airports all day the battery is at 20% and you need to have the charger with you and find an outlet.
1) do not always have the charger handy
2) can not always find A/C
Does anybody really expect better battery life than with other phones ?
I am wrong Google did post some stats
3,450 mAh battery
Standby time (LTE): up to 23 days
Talk time (3g/WCDMA): up to 32 hours
Internet use time (Wi-Fi): up to 14 hours
Internet use time (LTE): up to 14 hours
Video playback: up to 14 hours
Audio playback (via headset): up to 130 hours
I should have no problem going through a long day moderate usage if this is correct.

They stated similar stats when they released the 6P (the shop page was deleted so I can't paste them) and I got one....
Best screen-on-time I can get is 5 hours (with custom rom, custom kernel and a lot of system tweaks).
Don't rely on those stats, they were (in the best case) made under ideal conditions (probably in a lab) or (and that's rather the case) just calculated and without promise....
I am somewhat underwhelmed with the 6P battery life, but I'm stock as I can't root per company policies.
Hoping the Pixel XL will be better. Or at least same... If it is worse, then it will be going back in the 14 day return window.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Potentially we're looking at better stats.
Same size battery in a smaller body with a smaller screen and Supposed CPU optimisations, could explain the underclock.
My 6p makes it through the day without a charge, but I'm never far from an outlet, car charger or power bank just in case. Now that I've USB C proofed my home and office the rapid charging serves its purpose.
We've all seen the garbage spouted about days of battery life before and usage varies so much per user it's hard to compare. As they say the proof is in the pudding so we'll soon see, the price definitely isn't going up so why not wait and see?

Why not rely on Google's internal battery life tests?
They did the same for the 6P, so they can be compared.
All that matters in the end is how it really works for you, also stats are always overly optimistic. You buy a car an the dealer says the car is rated 5 litres per 100 km and every time the best your car does is 7 litres per 100km
What I had to do in the past is when I know I will be travelling without easy access to a charger is ration battery usage.
The stats though are encouraging hopefully and only time will tell is my next device I will not have to ration too much.
I really miss removable batteries remember the carefree way I used devices in the past with huge Zerolemon batteries. They will like sell a case for the Pixel XL but a case that adds battery capacity is not as elegant as just using a bigger battery.
The reviews on the battery life seem pretty terrible so far and is really worrying me as it was my only concern. I have been rocking a Hauwei Mate 8 recently, which I consistently get around 7 hr SOT. Reviews for Pixel XL are coming out at 3.5-4 hr, which is not good for how big it is. It has only a slightly smaller battery than the S7 Edge, but the Edge performs much better, I was getting 5-5 .5 hr SOT with my Edge before switching to Mate 8. Google Assistant always being present and doing stuff may be a pretty severe drain. Just as someone else mentioned, nice that we have a 15 day return window.

3-4 hours SOT sucks. Im getting 6 hours on 6p and 5 on Nexus 6
SOT is dependent on multiple factors, like what apps are running in background and what you do on the phone. Web browsing habits of sites visited, some sites have a lot going on.

Where are you seeing these 3.5-4 hr SOT reviews??
Many of the reviews that came out yesterday gave the Pixel highly positive ratings on battery. MKBHD said he got 6hrs SOT on full brightness, Dieter at the Verge said it might be the best battery life of any phone he'd ever used. Wired and a couple others also noted it as a high point. But then Mossberg said the smaller Pixel got so-so battery, and I think one of the Android Authority guys also called it average.
So... it sounds like basically any other Android phone. Varies highly for different people.

Pretty sure the AA review, he was getting 3.5-4 hours for battery life and called it good/above average, which is not. I remember his specifically because that is where I got the idea that google assistant could be having a large impact if used heavily, which he said he was using heavily. I don't remember MKBHD saying 6 hours but I would have to go rewatch. I know I saw at least 2 reviews that said 3.5-4 ish and they both called it good. Which makes me worry that all the other reviews that called it good without giving specific numbers were under this same impression. I watched a crap ton of reviews, many didn't give specific stats. They must be comparing it to htc10, lg g5 and iphone to consider that good, leaving samsung as the only outstanding if they are considering that anywhere near good.
Turned my phone on right out of the box around 12pm and started using it and I hit over 3 hours of sot

I wouldn't put too much stock in the first charge out of the box but that is still not a good indication. No bueno. Guess I have two weeks to try it out.
I'm at 90% right now with 56 min screen on time. Just reading the news/web browsing. On wifi.
I'm happy.

That's what I have been wanting to hear! Would you be willing to post some screen shots of your battery life, etc before you plug her in tonight. How heavily have you been using the new assistant? have you done anything to customize your settings like turn off always listening or anything like that, adaptive screen brightness, etc?
MKBHD on Twitter
I got mine yesterday at 5pm, Used it straight, setting it up with everything turned on and screen @ %100 (setup, music, movies, games) and it died after 5.5 hours. It was also on 86% charge when i got it.

Right now, no tweaks everything turned on (assistant, always listening, Bluetooth, wifi).
Mostly web browsing. 15 minutes or so of Clash Royale. On wifi most of the day. Auto brightness.
Looks like about 6h SOT if I took it to empty.

The battery life on this phone is PHENOMENAL!

Guys I just got this phone through the Nexus 6p RMA I got a pixel xl 32gb and I just wanted to share something positive. Today using the phone for the first full day I got 7 hours of screen on time with 7 percent battery remaining. I'm shocked I've never seen better battery life or even close from any other phone. Nexus 6p in the beginning managed 5 hours sot sometimes but it degraded fast and pretty much got 4 or less for my 2 years with it so 7 hours is such a blessing. I love this phone.
I'll attach some pics I took before but didn't end up taking a picture at 7% but you can extrapolate from the photos.
Yes, but remember as a general rule it's a lot better when on wifi. It isn't as good on cellular only. Just a fact of life. I can get six+ hours SOT on wifi but only about five off it.
Good to hear...I did the same RMA.
Loving this phone. I can't believe it went under the radar.
I was using an iPhone 7 Plus...but can't see myself going back...that one might be for sale soon lol.

Ditto! RMA nexus6p for Pixel XL and it's battery and smoothness is awesome! ??
My 6P was so awful on battery I had chargers everywhere plus carried a big portable power pack.
With my new XL I have to remember Not to plug it in. Night/Day.
I am also a newer adapter of this phone and I've had it about 2 weeks. This is my battery life from 2 days ago with heavy YouTube usage. Rooted Oreo, no custom kernel, just greenify on a few apps. So much better than my Note 5, which topped out at 2hrs 50 minutes. Not to mention, this phone is way smoother and flies in terms of apps opening, really impressed with this phone.
Awesome.
Just found out that Facebook Messenger destroys battery life on Android..

Yes. The Pixel XL is by far the best battery life phone I have had in a long time (the previous champ was my the Samsung Fascinate 3G from years ago.)
On 7.1.2...freaking amazing battery life. Then I got the 8.0 update and that had lower battery life. Less screen on time. Many users reported this. Buddy of mine also had noticed the same thing.
The Sept 8.0 update then came out and now its back to the awesome battery life it had before.
As an aside. Where can I get a good tutorial on how to set up Greenify's treatment of the various apps on my phone? By itself, it's not immediately obvious what I should be doing to the various apps.

Why would u even want to use Greenify and such apps now?...O is far superior to previous versions with its Doze mode and app suspend processes..
Battery life is average at best, Still to beat my Nexus 6 or S7 Edge on MM here im getting a day or less standby with a meh 5hr sot

I didn't realize Oreo is so superior. In fact, I get worse battery life than I did on Nougat.

It was worse ...the first 8.0 update. The latest updates fixed that for me and buddy of mine. I read there was an issue with Google play services app older version eating battery. that updated with the last ota and its been great. I have very few apps on my phone though. i do know that FB and especially FB messenger...and probably many other apps are not quite optimized for Oreo yet and will eat battery in the background and its not shown in the battery stats. U can go into the system app settings now and disable certain apps to run in the background like FB. u wont get notifications for that app but i don't care, i manually check those apps fine.
Battery pretty good. Several times I tried going 24hrs starting at 100%. Essentially get 10hrs screen time over 24hrs with 10% to 15% remaining.

Forget the 6p. We had amazing battery life before this update. Then sot dropped like a rock. Screen off.. amazing. After O screen on time was half. Literally half. Same synching, same everything. Half sot! How else can I say it?

SOT sucks. I have it back up to 6.25 hours, but it's still not up to Nougat standards. It's either the increased performance sucking CPU or the screen itself is using more. I don't buy the updated apps for Oreo theory.

I also agree Oreo has horrible battery life not close no nougat. I have tried every kernel i could get my hands on.
I wonder if they did this crap on purpose so people would buy the pixel 2

Some have said it was Play services but others say no. Some have said it's the display driver on O. Either way I hope they come out with a fix if this is not some dastardly scheme. Very disappointing. I never had to charge my phone during the day and now I do. I was going to buy a 2 but now I'm on hold with that until this is fixed.
