Random reboots on 5.1 Lollipop - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I have a problem with my N4 ever since updating to 5.1: The phone randomly reboots every two to five days while it's asleep. The screens lights up, the Google logo shows and it boots up normally. The device is rooted, now running LMY48T stock ROM with stock recovery. I upgraded to the latest handful of security releases by manually flashing radio, recovery, boot and system from factory images via fastboot.
Did a quick search and came up with 2 similar threads ([1],[2]) on the forums and this one on the Google forums. There's a multitude of solutions discussed (safe mode, keep WiFi off, keep Bluetooth on, clear cache, full wipe), but none is confirmed to be a global solution - probably because nobody seems to know what the actual problem is. I always cleared the cache after any update and because I flashed partitions from 4 or 5 factory images since the problem first appeared, it can't be a problem with corrupt images. Didn't try the other "solutions" yet, because they're all just poking around in the dark.
But I got lucky an hour ago and caught a reboot while the phone was sitting on the table in front of me. I tried a logcat, but this seems to show the after-boot stuff only. But the last_kmesg got it:

I once did some kernel hacking on a Samsung phone, but I'm no pro and do not really know what the log is telling me. Can anybody who know's have a look and help identify the problem? Any help is greatly appreciated - this bug is really bugging me!

I'm keeping that in mind. If Google doesn't fix this until christmas, I may switch to CM.

Thanks. The switch is fine.
Another reboot the other morning after midnight (time stamp is UTC, don't get confused). It's the second time the phone rebooted just minutes after I put it down to go to sleep. kmsg:

Phone won't wake up

Every so often my phone just refuses to wake up. I press menu and the keys light up but screen never does. I press call+menu+end to reboot and screen still doesn't wake up. Second time I try call+menu+end screen finally wakes up and device reboots. I'm running CyanogenMod 3.6.8.1 and have a custom bootscreen. Does this seem like a hardware problem or software? Any help is much appreciated, thanks.
After flashing a new ROM, the problem seemed to go away but came back. Everything seems to power on except the lcd. I can tap and hold to move an icon but nothing shows on the screen. Is there a certain app that would cause this or is it hardware? I've disabled compcache and swap and it made no difference. Any advice appreciated
I uncovered a little more info using dmesg over adb. Heres what it said

Is the code in bold at the end my problem? Is my hardware broken or could this be just a software bug?
I also tried an older CM build and same thing is happening. Is this officially hardware? Would I be able to get it replaced by HTC considering I got it unlocked on eBay?
umm u might wanna wipe...n if that doesnt work..(drastic measures) run dreaming.nbh in the spl bootloader and reroot
I've wiped and flashed a different ROM twice, no luck. How do I run dreaming.nbh? From the shell in recovery?

[Q] Run 6.1.0-RC2-Aria ROM in SDK emulator ?

Hi all,
I have downloaded the 6.1.0-RC2-Aria ROM a couple of days ago, installed it on my phone and everything is working great - thanks again attn1!
Now I would like to do some testing/dev with it; instead of tampering with my device.
I created a NANdroid back-up and then tried running the ROM on the SDK emulator following threads instructions found over here and other forums, e.g. :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-572497.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=525930&page=2
http://android.modaco.com/content/g...p-and-running-a-full-rom-with-the-market-etc/
The emulator seems to be running OK, but the kernel gets stuck before it even gives me the boot animation. (- c.f. below for the parameters passed and the kernel boot log; adb logcat does not report anything at all -)
Anyone has been able to run this particular ROM on the SDK emulator or may give me pointers as to how to do so successfully?
Thank you.

LOL, root the emulated device!
I would if I knew how to do so on the emulator itself
I have rooted my actual device, but I have no idea how to accomplish this on the emulator; could you elaborate or send links on how to do this please?
I have googled and nothing relevant has showed up other than the emulator is supposed to be already root-ed; by issuing adb root I get:
C:\android-sdk\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb root
adbd is already running as root
I also tried running the emulator with the '-shell' parameter, but got the same result and the boot process gets stuck as well...
A little bit of extra guidance would be great.
Thank you.

Wireless issues

I've had my Nexus 7 for an hour or two now, and I've already been grappling with excessive wifi issues --
It's flipping from my 5ghz network to the 2.4 ghz network, and then losing connectivity all together. Wifi stays connected, but I can't access the internet at all.
I go into the wifi settings and toggle if off and back on (making sure to shut off the passive scanning first, so the radio actually shuts off). However, it does not come back on. I need to reboot it for the wifi to come back.
I did a factory default to see if that would resolve it -- but the issues got even worse. It connected to my wifi, but wouldn't let me sign in. It complained that it had no connection to the internet. I rebooted again, reconnected to the wifi, and entered my username and password. It said it was syncing my account, then asked me if I had a google account again. I signed in, AGAIN, and it downloaded my profile. Half my applications installed, then the rest started throwing errors about how they couldn't download. (I think it was a 920 error). Clearing the play store cache let me go in and manually download each of the remaining apps.
I'm still having really bad issues with the wifi, at this point. I informed google that I'm having these issues, and I'm going to follow up via email with a bug report.
It may be worth noting that the charger it shipped with was working, then wasn't, and is again. No idea what's up with that.
So far, I'm really, really disappointed... I'm just hoping that this is all software related, and they can fix it quickly.
It looks like a driver issue, browsing through the bug report. Relevant log information:

I am having issues as well. On my home dual-band router I only get "authenticating", and "obtaining IP address"... but it did connect OK to a WiFi AP I created with my Nexus 4. I'm not sure what the problem is.
It also comes up with "avoiding poor internet connection" even though I'm in the same room and it has full bars.
Edit: Hmm... connects if I switch it to 2.4 GHZ only mode. Does not work on Auto or 5ghz mode.
This issue seems to have been isolated to the one device. I exchanged it, and have since had no issues of this kind.
Glad to hear man. I know my device has been running wonderfully, fast transfer rates. Its been great.
interesting. i'm beginning to think my issue is my home AP. It's an Apple Extreme. I have the same issue on 2 devices. An HTC One running 4.2.2 and this Nexus 7 running 4.3...
However, like above, once i set my device to 2.4GHz, it works... mostly...
the error i'm getting is the 'temporarily avoiding poor connection'... does not compute as my AP is about 40 feet away and my other device is connected to AP with full bars.
What kind of APs are those with wfif issues connecting to by chance?

give it time before you quote yourself on that. my device did not manifest its wifi issue until a week after purchase.

Yeah, I can confirm its definitely limited to certain APs. After wiping tablet I had the problem again but once I got the connection working to my home router once, it stayed working ( on 2.4ghz, anyway)

yea, seems like forcing it on 2.4GHz helps. we'll see. that's what my phone is set to and it's connection stabilized.

[Q] Defy+ CM7.2 crashes after a few days

Hi!
I'm using the following rom on my Defy+: cm-7-20130710-UNOFFICIAL-FINAL-jordan_plus-signed (CM7.2 Maniac)
I love it, but there is one big problem: the phone always crashes after a few days (2-3) and I need to take out the battery in order to restart it.
Today I noticed something before it crashed: at work I pulled out the phone to check the time and noticed that the wifi icon in the statusbar came on, but it stayed grey and didn't go blue (connected). I couldn't investigate the issue at the time, but after a few hours when I checked my phone again, it was dead and I had to take out the battery to turn it on again.
Below is the last part of kmsg, I also attached the full log.
I also checked the logs in the past after crashes, and the recurring thing is that it always conatins TIWLAN downloading a firmware in the last part. So I suspect some kind of wifi problem, but could it also cause the phone crash? Or it's a seperate issue?
Much appreciated!
EDIT: Solved! Turns out it was RIL bug and the phone didn't reboot properly, it got stuck at black screen. Reflashed the phone, no RIL bug since.

[Q] [Solved] [KERNEL] Recompiled SM-G900F Stockkernel has WIFI issues

Dear all,
I know this is not the correct thread but I don't have enough privileges to post in development.
EDIT: crap, just saw there is a Q&A section, messed up the location of my first post it seems.
The Project
Roaming is bad on most android devices for VOIP. This is due to the fact that you can't change the default parameters efficiently.
I wrote a fix for the broadcom drivers (BCMDHD4354 and BCMDHD) by means of using the iotcl's and a custom tool I wrote to change the default parameters (delta, trigger, interval)
The problem
When I compiled the stock kernel G900FXXU1ANG2 found on the opensource page of samsung I had no error's whatsoever.
The device booted fine and everything seemed to work. I was able to adjust the roaming parameters successfully.
However ...
After turning the wifi on and off by means of reboot or just turning it off or whatever, the connection profile is lost.
The entry found before in wpa supplicant is gone and is replaced by this:
Code:
cat /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
ctrl_interface=/data/misc/wifi/sockets
update_config=1
device_name=kltexx
manufacturer=samsung
model_name=SM-G900F
model_number=SM-G900F
serial_number=8e98743f
device_type=10-0050F204-5
config_methods=physical_display virtual_push_button
p2p_disabled=1
okc=1
ss_enc=1
autoscan=samsung_exponential:8:128
cred={
imsi="?"
}
It also takes a very long time to actually turn on the wifi. The stockrom takes around one second while my kernel version takes 8-10 seconds.
The steps I allready took
kernel without any customization
I downloaded the source again (just to be sure) and compiled it without any changes. Using the build_msm8974pro_kernel.sh script found with the kernel (with some small adaptions regarding folder locations and toolchains).
It compiled fine and was able to successfully flash the zImage on the phone: Still the same issue, so its not because of my small change to the BCMDHD4354 driver.
in short the script can be reduced to this:
Code:
make -C ../kernel O=../okernel -j4 ARCH=arm \
CROSS_COMPILE=/opt/toolchains/gcc-arm-none-eabi-4_7-2014q2/bin/arm-none-eabi- \
msm8974_sec_defconfig VARIANT_DEFCONFIG=msm8974pro_sec_klte_eur_defconfig \
DEBUG_DEFCONFIG=msm8974_sec_eng_defconfig SELINUX_DEFCONFIG=selinux_defconfig \
SELINUX_LOG_DEFCONFIG=selinux_log_defconfig || exit -1
Toolchains
Samsung suggests to build the kernel using the arm-eabi-4.6 toolchain. However, the sockrom uses the gcc 4.7 library, so I tried both. (got some errors with the 4.6 not finding certain headers etc... which I fixed by mannually adding them).
However, I got the same problem using both toolchains. So I don't think it's a toolchain problem.
DMESG log
I disabled the wifi and started a clean dmesg log the moment I turned wifi back on to compare the differences with the stock and the compiled stock.
(I got a lot more debugging messages, but that is probly because it is configured that way in my defconfig file).
Besides taking 10 seconds longer before showing up in the dmesg there does not seem to be anything off.

Any ideas what I could be missing?
SOLVED
Strange I didn't think of checking the logcat output before trying to find something in DMESG.
Anyway, I found this output in logcat once I tried to enable my Wifi:
Code:
E/SecureStorage(21019): [ERROR]:SPID(0x00000000)Client SS library: connect: Connection refused
E/SecureStorage(21019): [ERROR]:SPID(0x00000000)SS_ConnectToDmnSndCmnData error
To fix this you need to disable secure storage in the /system/build.prop
Change
Code:
ro.securestorage.support=true
To
Code:
ro.securestorage.support=false
So now I have a deodexed, pre-rooted, roaming-fixed, debloated, Odin flashable stock image for SM-G900F
Help me, please. How to use build_msm8974pro_kernel.sh? Where can I get a ramdisk.img and ../buildscript/tools/signclient.jar?
