I have actual real computers for work that requires them. I build my own. And can build a nice one for less than the Surface .
For mobile smaller screen needs, Surface is more than I need to pay for. Which is why the Pixel C is what I'm waiting for.

I've got a little 8" windows tablet, x86, full desktop Windows (See my sig for the model, great device)... Not that useless garbage Windows RT disaster. I can install any little tweak program I want, run multi things in windows or side by side. I can run all emulators, I can play older, REAL games (Half Life 1, etc). Most importantly. I can listen to my youtube podcasts without being STUCK IN THE "YOUTUBE" APP. That drives me insane. Until Android can run applications in windows and true multi tasking split screen... it will never be even close to beating a windows tablet. As much as I love android, it is NOT a true multi tasking OS...hopefully google fixes this soon. But even then, you are limited to the play store for a collection of 90% garbage, unless you root...which... I always do. Xposed, and other things become available...but still. There are more high quality open source programs for windows than decent paid apps in all the 3 app stores combined...and that is what drives me insane.

Pretty easy to side load apps. Without root. And plenty of people us alternative app stores like Amazon's.
But you clearly don't like Android. So enjoy what you have, it makes you happy. I don't think Google is targeting you with this.
I'll enjoy mine, without attitude.

You can code if you want to. Nobody stops you from installing a Linux Distro via chroot. I code in my Note tablet for years now.
The problem is the size of the screen (quite small for coding), not the software. In fact the software is the star of Pixel C (android + linux)...

cool! Thanks! I guess i can try to install kubuntu on my note 4 :/ but its risky! Although Android is arm and not intel/amd(closed source) but thats amazing for coding
The only problem noe is missing my mechanical keyboard It's huge to carry around

Well I'm running Lubuntu (LXDE and Ubuntu) for 2 years now.
The easiest way to run KDE + Ubuntu is by installing Xserver XSDL (set it up and let it run in the background) and then LinuxDeploy (choose Ubuntu, KDE and the then rended in Xserver and finally install + start).
If you don't have root there's only Debian I'm afraid: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.****ubuntu&hl=en

An interesting thing happened while waiting forever for Google to release the Pixel C. I had an event, that put me in a situation where I needed my desktop while on the go. Basically, I needed another laptop. I already have more than one, but I needed my desktop while on the move. I need yet another full mobile computer. And will have to end having a dedicated "desktop" style PC. When I need to be on the move, I can't take the desktop with me. Things have changed.
And so I'm now looking to get a Surface Pro 4. Considering it will replace a desktop and I probably won't get a Pixel C in light of this. The expense is a little easier to swallow.
Google had me sold on the Pixel C, but took too long getting it to market. And it can't do what I now need to have, given new circumstances.

I was actually considering a Surface 4 or a Pixel C and would have gone with the Surface (and erased Windows 10 and put Linux on it) but the price and the stupid kickstand deterred me. I had a chromebook before and liked it, but I like the detachable nature of the Pixel, even though their slimmed down keyboard sucks when you're trying to use it as a laptop to SSH into Linux clients since it lacks common keys such as escape and others. I ended up just buying a full bluetooth keyboard to use with my Pixel.

Since the C is discontinued and 2 years old.. what is another alternative?

Getting an Android Tablet?

Any one here planning on getting one of the what seems like dozens of Android based tablets that will be coming out later this year?
What about Google TV? Anyone planning on springing for it?
I have already looked into many of the tablets that are available over seas right now.
Some are as low as $100 bucks... got to do more research though.
I've noticed some rumors of really cheap models <$150 (iPed)
But the specs are laughable in some cases even compared to our phones.
I have an iPad and it's pretty nice but it is really lacking in a lot of areas and I can't wait for a Nvidia Tegra 2 Android Tablet to come out so I can sell the iPad and get a real tablet that or one of the windows 7 tablets that are coming out too. I really just want iPad build quality Tegra2 hardware with a 10"+ screen and Android the iPad is really a faster larger iPod touch and iPhone OS has nothing on Android. It would be really nice if the guy who got Android running on the iPhone could port it to the iPad I would be in love because the build quality and the screen of the iPad are top notch pair that without the best mobile OS out and you've got a clear winner!!

I agree, There is no official Android Tablet out there, just the bull**** that comes out of China. If you have been current on engadget, you would have seen their china gadget segment where they show all the knock offs that china sells. I really dislike China in that aspect because they do sell knock offs of real gear. A real tablet in my opinion is not some ****ty operating system that runs one program at a time and does'nt use the "Internet" correctly.
In the mind of Steve Jobs, he is a self indulging lunitic who favors a internet world without flash apparently, A operating system without multitasking, A world without people who have more than 1/4 of their brains. Meanwhile a monkey deep inside apple corporation is telling the dev team how to build a phone os by pointing at bananas and various nuts and fruits.
A real tablet pc in my opinion is a Windows 7/Android based operating system with a ATI or Nvidia based chipset that can run Starcraft 2 or Farcry 2 out of the box. We just need to give the Android team time, they are just getting themselves situated in this field and I know we can expect some amazing **** to come in the future.

Its going to be a looooooooooooong time before we see a tablet that will run games as graphically intense as Far Cry 2. Most pc's other than fairly high end systems can barely run it, if at all................besides, you need a mouse and keyboard for games like that, doesn't fair well with a tablet..................Besides, tablets are a pain to carry around, don't fit in the pocket or on the hip....

I actually think games like starcraft 2 would be amazing on a tablet, using multiple fingers instead a lot of on screen clicking with a mouse you could micro easily and do a lot at once.
off-topic. anyone ever see people play starcraft (especially koreans) they are amazing good, I used to play sc a lot and couldnt come close to anybody actually good. starcraft is like a national sport in korea, best players are treated like celebrities.
Dig up your old starcraft cd key and you own it for life on blizzard website, you can download it as many times as you want and play online still...
I used my starcraft non broodwar cd key i found in a box in my attic and they gave me broodwar for free...
worth trying out.
Only if I can find mine, looked earlier when i seen i could try to get the beta for sc2

Math Teacher seeking Tablet!

Hi Everyone,
I am looking for tablet advice. I am a high school math teacher who teaches using SMARTboards. If you've never heard of this, it's basically a giant white board that is also a touchscreen (picture a 6 foot tablet mounted to the wall). It mirrors the PC in my classroom (via a projector mounted on the ceiling), and allows lots of fun interactive opportunities with my students. However, I am stuck at the front of the room with my back to my kids a lot. I want to change all that, so I want to buy a tablet to control the PC (which in turn controls the SMARTboard).
What I am seeking requires a tablet that could take over a Windows XP PC (wirelessly I assume - we do have WiFi access). Any suggestion on good apps for remote access would be appreciated here, but also I want to know this - would this system seem to be a good one with the Nexus 7?
Do you guys think the screen is large enough for this sort of application (solving math problems with a stylus, and this would be projected onto a large screen for my kids to see)? Or would you think a 10" screen would be better?
Also, would this idea work, technologically? WiFi access of PC... this should allow writing on the tablet to write on the PC... SMARTboard would then show what I'm writing since it is a clone of the PC screen... I just need to make sure that I can easily control programs remotely from the tablet.
I know this may sound like a mess, but I really want to do my homework before spending money I don't otherwise NEED to spend. My smartphone (EVO 4G LTE) does all I need right now, but this would be a toy that I can also use daily for work. Thanks for any input you guys have! Feel free to ask questions if what I said didn't make perfect sense. I just know that XDA is the place to go for tech questions, and this is an awesome community.
Check out this app called Jump Desktop on the Google play store, might be what you're looking for.

Splashtop 2 is really good, works great with my computer.
A 7in screen should be fine if the app in question can zoom, or you dont mind less space.
I notice that with my remote desktop it doesnt matter if im zoomed in unless i try to name a file, or if im using photoshop to paint.
Realvnc for the win !

I would imagine the smartboard uses its own software, could you list the boards make/model? We might be able to help out a bit more. Otherwise you'll just be connecting your tablet to your computer via remote desktop and then using it to control your smartboard. I would imagine you would definitly lose some functionality that way and it would be hard to control with the small screen.
I would suggest either getting a netbook or small laptop and just face the class using it or get a stool to set it on, or to go to the google play store online and see if your smartboard has an app.
Good luck
That app has great reviews - and is cheap too! Thank you for the suggestion! I wish I could test out this system first, haha. Oh well, I'm sure there's a return policy I can use if something won't work.

I have done this actually
I love my nexus but i do NOT think its big enough..
when my arm was in a sling from surgery for over 5 months.. I would use SPLASH TOP .
My tablet was a 10 inch Acer a500 tablet connected thru my netgear wifi router in close proximity . to my Wired connection on the same router. With HDMI MIRROR to 42 INCH HD TV.. i used handwriting and photo shop on the tv screen . i think the 10 inch tablet was ok but the hand writing is hard because of the size of the screen on the tablet Drawing something say the 3 inches tall 1 letter on the tablet will show up as 4 feet tall on that display ..
Your software could have some zoom features in it to correct this. Other wise it would be difficult to make it work... its hard for my to explain the issue .
very doable if your program on the computer can overcome the zoom issue.. i THINK This is what the post above mine was saying..

+1 for Splashtop, but I would imagine there is some sort of Smartboard app specifically for Android devices. If there is such an app, that would probably be your best bet, but I don't know.
Splashtop on the other hand was the smoothest remote control software I've used. It's free as well (as long as your using it on a local network).

if there is a app for the smart board then a 7 in tablet will likely work .. the issue is the resolution and more so pixel density .. If the app will let you project say 1-4 ratio or what ever you need to make it work and resize then you could have a winner...
we use something similar to that smart board at work for blue prints..
ohh and +1 more for splash top Its best and i have tried them all.. the issue could lie in the speed and network ability of the xp pc
Unfortunately there is no SmartBoard app yet. Apple is getting one this fall, and Android MAY in the future. As for now, u can't bank on that.
I'm thinking the Samsung Tab 2 10.1 would be a good choice. Or maybe I should look into Windows Tablets... Hmm.

If you can wait till october- November I suggest you look into windows 8 tablet/PC which could do all of your computer functions with pen input and run all your computer applications.
I have a friend who is also an elementary school teacher and I recommended this device to her as she is also using the smartboard. I haven't used it myself but I think the size of screen is good for it unless you also already have a 10 inch tablet. But to each is own I know I write extremely small and she is more of a bubbly letter kind of gal so I can fit write more you could say.

I checked out tablets at Fry's Electronics today... 7" is definitely too small for this application.
Does anyone else have issues with accuracy of the styli out there today? I tried a few tablets and a few styli... I couldn't write an equation to save my life! It kept not reading it or appearing slightly above or below where I wanted. Then I tried the S pen on the Sammy Note 10.1... It was incredible! It was like writing on paper with a pencil! I don't wanna spend that much, but man that thing was incredible... I think that's what I may need.
Thanks for all of the help guys! Any other tips are still appreciated but I'm pretty sure I won't be a Nexus 7 owner...

Apple's issue with the OG G-Tab wasn't just its physical design, it was that, in their view, the OS it ran mimicked iOS and the combination would confuse potential customers. They never went after Windows phones even though they are physically similar to the Android phones they sued over because no one will confuse WP7/8 with iOS. The same thing would apply to W8 tablets.
This is far closer in design to the iPad and yet Apple never went after Asus. They pick and choose their targets carefully. I'd assume that in 2015 if all the appeals run out and Samsung loses Apple will then go back and seek damages from all other Android tablet and phone makers using the Samsung win as precedent.

same here. I doubt I'll let Asus sucker me in to buying another 4 tablets to find 1 usable one.
the tablet in the ops link clearly does not look like i pad. that button/ logo is at the bottom middle of landscape mode .. The ipad is bottom middle of portrate mode...
I would buy one if it could get all day use battery life weigh less then 1.5 lbs without keyboard of course. and prices reasonable. Ok well maybe i would consider it...
Here's a review of a W8 Pro tablet from a reporter that used it for a week. Overall, he was pleased. Here's some of the things he questioned which I think are going to be important to a lot of people. The things I bolded we've talked about and I'd bet you create a lot of chatter once W8 tablets are in people's hands. There's an old adage - "you only get a single chance to make a first impression." How W8 tablets launch and are perceived (outside the enterprise) are going to determine their future. So far all our conversations have been about the things people hope to do with them with no discussion about their limitations. The latter is going to get far more press after their launch. Look at maps and the purple camara flair in the iP5.
The split-screen view is one of my favorite new tricks. The OS supports full multitasking, and with a specific finger swipe maneuver, you can open two different Windows 8 apps on screen. For example, your Mail app can occupy the left pane (which is fixed at roughly one-quarter of the display) while Internet Explorer can sit in the right pane (which dominates the screen). If you like, you can flip their positions, moving the skinnier pane to the right side.
Another neat trick: To switch between open apps, simply drag your finger from the left side of the screen. Its the Windows 8 version of Alt-Tab, and once again demonstrates just how powerful--and fun--the system is relative to the competition. To see a thumbnail filmstrip of all of your open apps, quickly drag your finger right and then left, from the left edge of the screen. To access the Windows 8 "charms" bar--a centralized home for search, sharing, and settings functions, among others--swipe in from the right bezel. All these touch maneuvers became second nature once I learned them, but they're not intuitive from the giddy-up, and they're difficult to describe in words. This could emerge as a public relations pain point for Microsoft. If the company is smart, it will build a force-run demo video into Windows 8--something that pops up the first time someone turns on the new hardware.
Challenging learning curves aside, I found the W700's touch controls quick, fluid, and responsive. Screen redraws never lagged or stuttered, and the hardware seemed well-equipped to handle the OS's requirements. We didn't run any benchmarks on our preproduction unit, but if a Core i5 and 4GB of memory can't boss a tablet OS around like a schoolyard bully, Microsoft has serious optimization problems.
Of course, the new Start screen is far from perfect. For one thing, without resorting to third-party utilities, a user who wants to boot straight into the system's desktop mode can't bypass the Start screen. And as Paul Allen recently pointed out, the Start screen has no hierarchical nesting system--so if you have a huge collection of apps, you may find yourself scrolling ad nauseam to find a particular live tile.
All of which brings us to the question of how the W700 and Windows 8 performed in desktop mode. It was far better than some critics have made it out to be, but a device like this definitely presents some compromises. The bigger problem with using the W700 as a traditional PC productivity machine lies in the rendering of the Windows desktop. A resolution of 1920 by 1080 on an 11.6-inch screen makes for tiny fonts, icons, and scroll bars. And because all of these interface elements were so small, I had trouble seeing text in the URL field of Internet Explorer, for example. Likewise, using touch gestures to collapse and exit out of windows--or, for that matter, just navigating around the basic Windows experience that I've been using since Windows 3.1--was a challenge.
Though Windows 8 hasn't even launched yet, it's off to a rocky start. Power users are slamming Microsoft for all the new "features" that subjugate the desktop, and as we reported on Monday, the Windows Store inventory is looking alarmingly thin.

I would buy one if it could get all day use battery life weigh less then 1.5 lbs without keyboard of course. and prices reasonable. Ok well maybe i would consider it...

And this my friends is why Windows tablets will fail. The screen is simply too small to be a laptop replacement and too expensive to be a tablet replacement. Of course some people will like it but it will not find wide acceptance. Add to that that enterprises HATE Windows 8 and you have a recipe for failure.

I would so have to agree with this. A
As far as the tablets looking alot . well the look is directly related to how it works. the layout and so on . that is why the icrap lawsuits and patents should be tossed out. as well as some other design patents .. its not just a common sense function.. not a design..

but i think this is closer to true mobile computing. a tablet that "transforms" into a laptop and you can hook up to a monitor and other external components when at home. all with the power of a full OS and better application support than any other tablet.
it's definitely not what everyone wants or needs, but it's something i'm looking forward to.

"better application support than any other tablet."
Wait till the product is out for a while before making a claim like that. It reallly puts me off considering a win8 tablet when people proclaim something is this and that, when the damn things not even out yet...........
Saying that, as a current android user i wish the win8 tabs a sucess in a FREE MARKET, because COMPETITION benefits us all
An 11.6 inch tablet at same basic resolution as this tablet is going to look like crap. Seriously. These Windows 8 Tablets are too expensive for a tablet and too small for a laptop replacement.
Stuck in the middle. They won't sell.

guess i should have been more specific since there will be 2 versions of the w8 tablet, but i was referring to the pro version from barry's post. it's already a fact that windows has more applications than any tablet (but not necessarily all tablet friendly) - possibly combined. sure i'll be giving up battery life, but that's what i'll have my ARM tablet for - who knows what OS that one will be.
one thing i'm hoping for on windows rt is the ability to tie multiple devices to one account but only allow certain devices to actualy access the mail and personal settings of the main account, like IOS does. i don't like tying all my android devices share with my daughter to my gmail account and i don't want to make two account and have to buy an app twice to share it with her (amazon is a decent solution, but no for apps i've already purchased). i've got app blockers on her tablet now, but one day she may get smart enough to get around them.

[Q] Note or Laptop for digital art? i cant decide on this one

What do you guys think, should i go with a note like i was planning too or get this laptop?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834310625
theres pros and cons to both but i just cant decide x .x
I have a wacom pad already on my desktop and is the reason i like the GNote
I have tons of games for both android and windows and either one would be able to play all the ones i have for either OS. The laptop will be able to run my adobe suite though and the GNote wont.
What do you guys think? stick with my GNote plan or might i be short changing myself in the productivity department?
Are you planning to replace your desktop with it? The note is definitely not a desktop replacement (no proper adobe suite etc, apps still have a bit of a way to go but are getting much better) but as for laptops... nowadays i hardly ever use my laptops unless i want to do a lot of typing. if you want the note as a side sketchpad or to do work up to a certain extent then it's a fantastic tool... the only thing similar is a tablet pc and those are $$$ and comparatively horrible for battery life so.
Personally i use my desktop anytime i need to get big things done fast but use the note 10 for quick sketches, small pieces and to draw on the go, or while sitting on my couch. Then i usually add the last few touches on my desktop.
Hope that helps.

No I'm not b trying to replace my desktop, just be a bit more productive with my some of my work when not near it and get rid of the needed to carry a sketchbook.
Think I'm gonna stick with the plan of getting the note. The power of the laptop would be nice but I think the portability of the note out weighs the potential benefits of the laptop. I can also save about 100$ getting the note xP

Note all the way mate. Was in a similar situation last year. Bought a laptop in the end, because I just couldn't see how the note would do what I wanted it to. Then I got a note a few weeks after and tbh the laptop is just sitting gathering dust.
For drawing I use either sketchbook pro (note version) or infinite painter pro and when combined with photoshop touch (which comes with the note) you get a hell of a lot of productivity on your hands, rarely needed to use the desktop. You will be amazed at just what you can achieve, well i have been anyway. Only package I'm really missing is a proper animation one. But I'm sure with time that will come and if not, theres the trusty ol PC in the corner.
I might be able to help, seeing as I had the same decision to make a handful of months ago, It really depends on the type of art your trying to make. I'm an illustrator that recently bought a Note 10.1 to do some sketching on the go. I use my Note to start the sketching stage of an illustration.I would not be able able to complete an entire illustration on the Note. It can't handle large files with a lot of layers(80mb). I normally use Photoshop and on the tablet I would be missing too many tools that I normally use. Only a handful of Android apps can open a pre-exiting .psd files with layers intact. Plus the screen is to small. My desktop setup is a triple 28" monitor setup with an Extra Large Intous4 tablet and 2 x-keys.
I used to use a laptop with an extra wacom, but unless your planning on sitting still for extended periods of time its not practical. It take as while get going each time and pack up. With the Note I'm able to use it while walking. The perfect example is shopping with my woman. While I'm waiting for her to move to the next store I can sit in the corner and sketch. This would not be practical with a laptop.
Even if that was not a issue, most laptop have a screens that have bad color shift when you move your head from side to side. I have messed up an illustration that I was working on because of this. Also the battery life on my laptop with constant use is a little over 2hrs. which is terrible.
Another option was to get one of new tablet pc's (slate) or new windows 8 pro tablets. I didn't go that route because of price. I don't want to be lugging around a 1000+ piece of tech around. Because I dismissed this as an option I didn't use any of these product hands on, so I don't know if there are any issues. There are some videos on youtube.
I mainly use PS Touch and LayerPaint. They work best with my work flow. I would only use PS Touch If it could open .psd files.
The android apps the the other poster mentioned are also the ones that I recommend. I would also like to add Layerpaint to the list. It's one of the few apps that can open .psd files with layers intact(PS Touch can not, it flatten the image).
If you want the natural media look I would go with Infinite Pro or Sketchbook Pro.
I your just using it for light sketching the think the Note 10.1 would be better. I you want to do completed work you might want to look into the new windows 8 pro tablets.

no problem, as the other posters here have commented I totally agree with them, laptop + wacom = sucky. a tablet PC would be better... but I had tablet pcs, didn't like the weight + heat + noise + battery life and the digitizer is exactly the same. having the tablet pc would not be worth the doubled price IMHO unless you plan to be doing full work while you're travelling a lot? also, the new slate screens are not much bigger than the note, and usually stretched in a weird long portrait dimension it seems...
pretty sure you'll love using the note as a mini-cintiq (eg. i have a 20 inch cintiq on my workstation but i often just use my note instead cause it's so easy to whip out /turn on/ take anywhere)
I have been using Clover Paint on my note (cannot open psds or transform yet (in development) but i've found it great to work with once it's all set-up the way you want)

i was considering won 8 pro tabs but looking at the price and the fact that i tend to work in alot of layers the atom processors would take a dumper in my case. I usually work in large dpi/res images with many layers which my desktop is perfect for. I'm wanting something with protability and the power to do alot of the desktop stuff but i suppose ill have to make a bit of sacrifice which is ok, the note will be a good way to start my images with sketches and such and i can do the painting and effects on my desktop

I really like using Sketchbook Mobile on my GNex so i will only like Sketchbook Pro better on my Note im sure

I guess it kind of depends on how much you're willing to spend. The more you would want to do on the go, the more you'll have to spend. The Note 10.1 will not exactly handle more than an Atom-based x86 Win8 tablet either. The difference is that because you're running Android, you're not gonna have apps that will overload the processor (aka you can't shoot yourself in the foot). But, one of the major benefits of having Win8 is being able to run desktop class software. It may not be able to handle Photoshop, but it can probably handle the likes of Sketchbook Pro, Artrage, and Paint Tool Sai.. and the desktop versions of these apps will probably be more powerful than their mobile counterpart (not sure if Sai has a tablet version out there).
That being said, I have the Note and an i3 Lenovo laptop w/ an Intuos/22" monitor.. and between these two I'm perfectly satisfied. If you add the multiwindow mod (multiwindow for any app) for the Note, then you'll almost have a desktop like experience on the go.
I think it was already mentioned, but the main advantage of the Note over the Laptop+WacomTablet is the portability. Since it sounds like you're going to use your desktop for more careful work anyway, you probably will get more out of the Note's portability. By the way, how is TVPaint in terms of its usage, relative to desktop class software?

Yea, my budget is about 500$, so 1000$+ win8 tabs with decent processors won't be an option. Ik the note won't handle more, its just like you pointed out that android apps are lighter. I've use Sketchbook mobile and its for the most part the same as the desktop version. I think from the comments here I'm not gonna regret getting the note c:

anyway, the cintiq I bought secondhand off ebay and it was probably the best working investment ever though the $$$ did hurt somewhat. it was 1200 used, ended up 1600 ish with shipping/tax. would have been cheaper if I didn't live in Canada you can get pretty good deals if you don't mind shopping around on ebay/craigs etc.it speeds up my workflow at least 30%.
I also see people raving about the yiynova now which is 500 bucks or something? http://frenden.tumblr.com/post/38693256477/yiynovamsp19u

there's an open beta that you can sign up for, it is actually THE desktop software ported onto android so it's fully functional afaik and very powerful. but god knows how much they will end up pricing it at.

Super Dilemma! Buy Dell Latitude 10 Now or Wait for Haswell! – Tablets!

I absolutely love the new super long battery life of the Atom Z2760. By reading reviews of the Tablets I am finding out that all day battery life is absolutely no problem. Especially with the battery upgrade you can do with Dell on the Latitude 10 optional “60 WHR 4-Cell Battery”. People are getting like days of battery life.
I was really torn between the Microsoft Surface Pro which seems like a beast with all the loves and kisses of an amazing tablet but the battery life is horrid. I am currently going back to college and am looking for a note taking power house that will absolutely last all day, let’s say 8 hours. I know the Microsoft Surface Pro will be fast and the perfect size but will not last all day maybe 4 to 5 hours.
So battery life is my absolutely main objective. Even though I would love to have the Surface I prefer battery life. Other people might only need 4 hours of battery life and the Surface will be fine for them.
So back to my main question about the famous Haswell chip. I really want to pull the trigger on the Dell Latitude 10 because of the upgraded battery but I am reading about the Haswell chip and it seems to be everything tablets are not right now. I know you will always be in a 6 month loop with technology with something always better around the corner but this is something different. They say this is revolutionary and will increase performance and battery life by leaps and bounds. They are building the chip and tablet from the ground up with the Haswell.
What do I do? I mean will the Haswell actually be the amazing new Tablet revolution that everyone is talking about or is it just a bunch of hype? I mean how much more battery life can you pour into a Tablet over the Clovertrial.
I really do not need the performance upgrades of Haswell so much because I will be mainly using the tablet for note taking. I do not care about gaming, but same price and better performace is always nice in case you ever need it.
Please give me your thoughts or similar experiences. Will you be buying a Tablet now or waiting? Do you think it’s worth it to wait or just buy now? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I only want a full blown windows 8 experience as well, not RT, Android, or anything else.
Best,

Best,

I'm like you and was stuck and didn't know what to do. After researching online it seems Haswell tablets wont be out until the end of this year, but I needed a tablet now. I went with the Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2. It's faster than my SurfaceRT was and I absolutely love the digitizer. I use the pen mainly as a mouse when in the full desktop. It makes a huge difference having the pen to use as a mouse. If they refresh the Thinkpad2, I plan to sell my current one to acquire the haswell version. You always have that choice if you don't mind ebay/craigslist.

me too.
customise 128GB SSD.
on dual booting 7 and 8:good:
too use separated.
I would definitely consider an iPad for educational use. They're excellent for note taking and reading textbooks. No, I'm not kidding.

Yeah, let's pay more than a Win8 tablet to get a fourth of the usability (and I'm being generous with the iPad's usefulness)
I am in the same boat. I want a windows 8 tablet sooooooo much. I want to trade my laptop which weighs 7lbs for a nice, light tablet and I want to build a cheap pc for home gaming. However I don't want the Atoms. Not enough performance. And I wouldn't mind paying 600-700 bucks for an i3/i5 tablet right now, but I would hate myself if the Haswells came out with almost double the battery life and more performance for the same price.
So I've decided to be patient and work through this school year using my laptop. All the while saving up for my upgrade. Then at the end of next summer the Haswells should be on sale or cheaper. Or if they weren't as much of an improvement as we expected I can get the current tablets for dirt cheap. Next summer the surface pro will probably be around $500 at some places.

A fourth of the usability of a Windows RT tablet? Heck no. The iPad has way more stable, useful apps.

shows how much attention you've been paying.
Educational use, the RT has a full blown office suite, printing and usb storage, all useful and unavailable on an iPad. Well, office suites there are some but none even nearly match Microsoft office. Printing on RT is no different from a normal PC, no specialised printers required (my old school would have had to spend £40000 on printers if they were to replace with an iPad compatible model, the RT tablet a classmate bought in worked fine already). Usb storage, hah, you don't even get a usable file system let alone mass storage.
But we aren't using RT. We're talking windows 8, you know, that OS on your laptop or desktop. Intel atom, ivy bridge and haswell tablets as discussed here are all full blown x86 tablets and will run your full PC software which I would love to see you do on your iPad. That and many have active digitiser pens which are even better for nite taking than a capacitive screen which has no way to palm block (and I cannot contort my hand in such a way to write with a stylus on a capacitive screen without wearing gloves as a palm blocker).
So, cheaper and more useful for productivity which seems to be what was desired.

Hahahaha more useful apps than every single "app" I use on my PC everyday? Like gimp and Photoshop? Sony Vegas? Real games like DmC and Call of Duty? Wow. What are you even doing in this part of the forum?

You aren't going to be able to run any of those apps on Windows RT tablet. And if you do go up to the x86 windows 8 tablet, unless you're willing to spend $1000+, you won't get a tablet that runs Photoshop or Call of Duty well.

1. Apple has a very good Office Suite for iPads
2. Most universities will have printers that are compatible with wireless printing.
3. You seem to be misinformed as you can connect USB mass storage devices to iPads. (Though it does require jailbreak)
4. You said it's cheaper but for a tablet to have all the features you listed, the price point is close to $1000 or more.
5. Many medical fields write their software specifically for iPads. I know the hospital my mom works at does.

Did I say university anywhere? I'm not there until september. And besides, wireless printing does not mean an iPad will print to it, has to support some stupid apple protocol which although many do, most don't. And besides, in my old school the printing was not inherently wireless. The entire school was covered with a local network (a very large network which is also a rather convenient example of mixed topology within a network for computer science lessons), all printers were normal network printers. If you found a wireless access point then any windows device had no problem printing, if you had an ethernet connection then you could print fine from any normal computer too, a few of the printers in the school were even recognised by some android devices (although that was hit and miss), windows RT was able to print to them fine, iPads insisted that there was no printer present, even for the wireless one over in A11. There were only 2 iPad compatible printers in the building, 1 in the head masters office and one in my computer science room which my tutor bought himself.
The only office suites for iPads (pages is probably best and I presume the one you mean) are all far inferior to MS Office in terms of available functionality. Credit where credit is due, pages does work rather nicely as a basic office suite but leaves alot to be desired for things like .DOC support etc. Openoffice was able to open my 130 page coursework fine, MS Office was fine, Pages loaded a few pages, then gave up. The demo surface RT in john lewis, loaded it into MS office fine, no lag, nothing broken. Then on top of that, all RT tablets have office pre installed already, iPad its a seperate purchase. Same for windows 8 admittedly, but at least on windows 8 there are incredibly good free alternatives which are all fully fledged yet run fine on the atom processors of the CHEAPER tablets.
USB mass storage even on jailbroken iPads is buggy, its a native feature in Windows (for storage one can assume RT and 8 to be the same thing, as they do use the same feature set on this front). Windows supports more file systems, try using an NTFS drive on your iPad, or even on OSX for that matter, OSX has read only support, iPad apparently is hit and miss for that. You have to jailbreak which most users appear incompetent enough to not be able to do. Windows you get support for various forms of network storage too. Windows 8 you get FTP etc, with jailbreaks that is available on RT although not everyone wants to jailbreak (although those that need FTP are probably capable of jailbreaking). You get a normal file system presented on desktop, with apps in Start too, a proper file system, excellent, even android has that.
You will find that most establishments (including medical and educational, I know people from both backgrounds) who are migrating to iPads from existing windows solutions already have software for windows devices. Well, newsflash, a full windows 8 tablet will run these systems no porting required. But this is a hugely irrelevant point as we are not discussing the medical profession. In most cases these businesses are having to write their new shiny iPad apps from scratch, well if they are writing new software anyway they can just as easily write it for android or windows Start, so that further nullifies your point.
And no, a Asus vivotab smart costs less than an iPad. And does what needs to be done. Photoshop, devil may cry and call of duty were not on the criteria list, he said note taking and that he specifically is not gaming. Another newsflash, photoshop actually runs on the atom surprisingly well, sure your not going to be editing 500 megapixel images and applying 42 filters to it and having them done in 1 second, but quickly touching up the contrast on a 5mp phone photo is well within its abilities, more than that is but thats another null point as thats not a criteria so it doesnt matter.
I understand you want to defend your over-priced purchase but if your going to slate a windows tablet, use actual or relevant facts.

I actually don't have an iPad. My mom, however does have an iPad that was given to her by her work.
The Asus vivopad does not have a digitizer (which you were saying is a big plus on Win8 tabs) And according to a review I just read, it lags once a few apps are open so I doubt a resource hungry application like Photoshop will even run on it. I believe the comment about gaming and Photoshop were in response to someone else.
But the problem is that the medical companies aren't moving to Android because of security issues, build quality, and reliability.
USB mass storage works fine on the iPad. My mom uses it to type her papers. (A lot of which are well over 130 pages) Also I was not talking about you when I mentioned university. I assumed that the person I originally asked to consider an iPad was moving on to higher education. There are printing apps that allow you to print to almost every printer as well as accessories for USB only printers.

So going back to the original question and ignoring iPads...
I would say that you should wait for Haswell. It's literally right around the corner and you will get much better performance than Atom currently offers with the same, if not better, battery life. Also keep in mind that Intel just announced that Atom will be released with the newest architecture AFTER Haswell, meaning that the current generation is already very obsolete.

I was wondering if anyone knew of the latest or best phone that has the greatest ROM rooting following at the moment greater than the Galaxy Nexus?
I have a Galaxy Nexus right now and its great but I am just bored with it. I would like to upgrade. The only problem is that I use [GNEX TOOLKIT V11.1.0] Drivers, Backup, Unlock, Root, Recovery, Flash + MORE [SPRINT] which is the best tool around.
I was wondering if there are tools like this or better for other newer phones that I may upgrade to or should I just stay with my Nexus for while?
