Can the "Nexus" lettering fall off? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are the Nexus letters the same as the last 2 generations? I'm hoping they finally didn't inlay plastic letters with double sided tape. It seems like the 5X still has this design.
My Nexus 5 letter started falling off after about 6 months. Ended up removing the rest and eventually replacing the back. Same happened with my nexus 6. I got it replaced 4 moths ago because the battery was swelling.

From what I've read, the Nexus is printed on the 5x and 6P.

:good: I guess I haven't looked close enough at the Nexus 5x. I watched a few hands on and it is hard to tell but it looks like they have gone to just painted letters. Hopefully that doesn't wear off. I'm glad I don't have to worry about those falling out.
I'm starting to think that when I cleaned the phone with rubbing alcohol might have caused the letters to fall off. The alcohol might have worked as solvent for the adhesive they used. I have avoided doing that with my current Nexus 6 and so far they are intact. However I also used a case for a good portion of that.

Only speaking on the 6P but it's clear (to me at least) that the lettering is depressed lower than the rest of the back of the phone, making me believe it is imprinted and not a sticker.

The 6P body is anodized aluminum, so the nexus lettering is most likely laser marked (engraved/etched). It will look and feel like it's just printed onto the aluminum. So I don't think the lettering will "fall off."

Probably the case. Alcohol is a very good solvent.
On a side note, don't use it on screens. The alcohol will strip the oleophobic coating right off.

This is good to know! Do you have any suggestion on what to use? Just use water?

Weird half moon shape on bezel?

I just noticed this today. This is my 3rd nexus 7 and was hoping it was a keeper but im not too sure now. Its a 32gb c90. Just wondering if anybody else has this same issue. Its not water and does not appear to move. I've tried cleaning it off but it seams to be missing the coating in that area as if someone had touched it while it was drying. Any suggestions of what it might be?

It looks to me like the black coating of the bezel de-laminating from the underside of the glass, maybe down to a less than perfectly clean patch on the glass when the bezel coating was applied in manufacture.
Do you have a screen protector on it.. It looks like its under that and not between the glass.
looks like you spilled water or something.

The reason I thought it might be the coating on the glass is because if I wipe all of the finger prints off its barley visible but if I swipe over it it reappears. Ill post some pics of what I mean.
See how the skin oil gets "stuck" on the shape.
Anyways I think Im going to return it in case it decides to do more of what it is doing whatever that maybe.

That's what I first thought but it hasn't been near water and didn't "move" like water when I pushed on it. Also, if you look at the reply below I posted another pic of it. It seems that it may be on top of the glass but I've tried cleaning it with a micro fiber cloth but it stays there. I tried an alcohol swab and it seemed that the alcohol dried faster on that spot than the rest of the screen (I don't usually clean my screens with alcohol unless I cant get something off because I had read that it can destroy the coating on these "new" types of glasses)
Well then its just a defect in the glass or the coating they put on the surface to make it more smooth. Has it always been there.. anyway send it back i would
If you clean the screen then you can't see it?
Then clean the screen and apply a screen protector. That should solve it. I use an SGP Matte and its great.

I guess I could do that but I just don't want it to continue to deteriorate and end up having a pos outside of my return window. I think I'll just exchange it and continue the cycle.

Oleophobic Coating wearing off

I have my nexus 4 now for about a month, and I noticed that, starting from the top left edge of the front face the oleophobic coating looks like to wear off, it is noticeable because the fingerprints are much more visible in that spot!
does anyone else have this problem?
I find my screen gets 'sticky' after a few minutes use, where my finger no longer slides with ease.
But as far as finger prints my whole screen is permantly covered in them lol.
I just opened a thread in Q&A about this very thing. Mine's the same way. Was wondering if anybody has tried to use after-market coating sprays as a viable solution to this kind of thing. I've noticed that other phones in the past have had this problem too, so somebody here should have seen it before.
I've never used a coating spray but I highly recommend iKlear for cleaning. They claim it doesn't damage coatings, but it is a bit pricy. (Like all screen cleaners)
It's winter. Your hands are dry. Use lotion. Problem solved.
you need some Fusso SmartPhone drops, I have never had this issue as I have a screen protector, should last upto 3-6 months
www.amazon.com/API-Fingerprint-Oleophobic-Coating-SmartPhone/dp/B008H2GFUW/ref=pd_cp_cps_0
A month on and mine is still slick but if I could tell the coating was giving out I would call google.
Yep I am definitely experiencing this at the top left and slightly at the bottom right. The glass is still slick it more that they look like blemishes. Not sure what I should do really...

I was very close to buying this for my galaxy nexus but then i got the nexus 4, i wish some one would review it
Is this what you guys are seeing? I started noticing this a day or two ago, but I have no idea what it is. Is it the coating wearing off or is it a defect in the glass/screen itself?
(Smears were added intentionally to show the blemishes inside red box)
Yes that's it, at first glance it looks like it could just be a few finger prints but if you keep wiping, it doesn't go away. It looks like it's below the screen, but obviously it's not because it wasn't there before.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Yeah exactly. If the screen is clean then it doesn't look like it's there, but once there's dirt/oil again, then the blemishes come back. If it was the coating, wouldn't the glass feel different? Because my glass still feels really smooth all over, including that spot.
Sadly my glass feels really rough in the middle... Stupid coating! You can see the damage pretty well if you wipe a wet cloth over the screen. Will probably post a picture soonish
Has anyone tried to RMA their phone because of this? I've just discovered a ~1" x 1/8" streak right in the middle of my screen that just collects oil. No matter how well I clean it up with a microfiber and a dab of water it reappears once I use the screen again. I noticed when wiping the screen with the microfiber cloth it seems that the friction is higher in that patch.

Strong bump. I've got a similar issue on my 5 days old Lumia 920, around the earpiece to be more more precise. I don't really care much about it because it's not on the screen so I don't know wether I should get it replaced or not.

aren't the smears not supposed to happen if it's oleophobic? I guess I'm wondering why I'm always having to wipe my screen off when I've only had this phone for like a month..
I used that lame screen protector that comes with my nexus 4 for a couple of weeks. After getting fed up with it I removed it. A couple of hours later I found a scratch on my nexus 4. I tought that the gorrila glass was just bull****. I also found out that if I rub the scratch with micro fiber it completely disapears. Maybe it was already scratched and I didnt notice it because of the screen protector? A month later and no other scratch has appeared. Seams weird to scratch the screen in a few minutes after removing the protector but 1 month later no other scratch has appeared. Also my corners (specially the top left) is getting some heavy wear. Has anyone RMA their phone because of this disapearing oleophobic layer?
Regards.
Possible manufacturing defect
I've had my Nexus 4 (new design with the nub on back) for about a month and in the upper left corner also what appeared to be a smudge, and after some alcohol wiping and delicate cleaning is still there It shows up more when there are finger oils than when clean. I've owned many other smartphones before and this hasn't happened, I keep it in jeans pocket with nothing else, so the only thing it could've been rubbing against was cotton. I think either LG made the coating too thin or of a material that weakens easily maybe when in contact with some acids (like fingers that have just peeled an orange).
Really sad to see this, my older & cheaper LG Optimus S & LG G2x didn't have this problem.
Anyone tried Rainx? I have used it in the past and it works pretty well. Needs reapplication occasionally.

Removing White Marks from Protective Film

Has anyone tried to simply remove the white marks from the protective film that come with the Nexus 4, instead of buying a whole new screen cover?
nah , i prefer get a new one, the existing one
easily peel off though.
The original one is crap. It scratches extremely easily.
Just don't use one. I have been using my Nexus 4 for 2 months now. Not a single scratch. (I use a bumper case though)
I'm not worried about scratching the screen protector, that's the point lol. I'm worried about scratching the screen. The original is quite thick and I'm fairly sure will protect the screen quite well. However, I was given a free screen protector with a case. I may invest in a few more in case this one doesn't work though.

Which is why I suggest we leave the screen film from the box on, but the white marks are annoying. Mine is still on and there are no marks on it. It's great for running your finger on too. I've certainly had far worse screen protectors. I might try a little bit of rubbing alcohol this weekend to try and remove the white marks and let you know.

I agree. I've left mine on as well and haven't any issues so far. It's really not a bad screen protector (or whatever you want to call it). I've purchased screen protectors for other phones that scratch very easily. I did purchase some screen protectors for my Nexus 4, but haven't put them on because I like the one that came with it. It gets the job done.

So, ill have a pop this weekend with light rubbing alcohol. It might not remove it and it definitely won't if the white is on the sticky side but if it does ill happily use this as a protector lol
I tried nail polish remover and it was a no go.

Not even a little bit?
I have the back protector still and from the feel of it, it's definitely not on the adhesive side. I haven't try to remove it but I was thinking about rubbing alcohol. I think it might take quite a few tries...
The back protector? I'm talking about the screen protector...
Isn't it the same material used for the makings? You're talking about to volume and power button marks? For me it's the white rectangle that has imei sticker. I peeled my imei sticker off and kept the protector.

Yes, the marks. Interesting that you think they can be removed. I will have a go with some rubbing alcohol. Might not come off though.
Rubbing alcohol doesn't work for me. I've even tried to scratch them off causing a nice patch of scratches that are more annoying to look at than the marks. Good to know nail polish doesn't work... that was going to be my next step.
You can try using a white background on your homescreen
The patch is actually pretty small just the left half of the power symbol... I do have more screen protectors on the way anyway along with the new Rearth Hybrid case that everyone has been squealing about.
Ahhh damn they must be under the protector. Will have to buy some screen protectors
weird. can afford to buy hundred dollar phone. but cannot afford to buy $10 dollar screen protector.

[Q] Left pattern after removing screen protector

Hey Guys! Just wanna share this problem. After removing a cheap screen protector on my nexus 4 i still have this pattern - the cutout on proximity sensor and on the camera. I tried scratching it with my nails but there is really no more residue, the surface is flat but the feel on the screen is different on the sensor or the actual glass. Did I remove a coating or something after removing the protector? I also dropped a small amount of alcohol trying to clean it and observed that it follows the pattern. Check out the pictures please. Thank you very much.

I couldn't describe it but you could barely feel the difference between the real glass (proximity or camera or edges) and the area covered by the screen protector. It seems It'd never be removed. I tried tape, alcohol, scratching it, none worked.

I thought the term oleophobic is for the steinheil SPs only. Is it really possible? What could possibly happen? Well I cant say, I immediately put a screen protector on the device right after I got it.
i'd say the oleophobic coating just rubbed off completely around the screen protector, mine has a slight problem around the sensor and front camera cut-out but it can only be seen if there are fingerprints on the screen and you know what you are looking for. i think it happens because of sweat/skin oils.

Quality problems with the plastic part between screen and chamfered edges

Hi,
I have my 6P now for two weeks, and for the looks I'm rocking it only with a screen protector and a white carbon dbrand skin.
So I am pretty careful with the phone.
The problem is that the phone already shows signs of wear, to be more specific:
It already has notches in the plastic between the screen and the camfered edges.
The plastic seems to be very soft. The only possible scenario where I can imagine to picked up the notches is while having it in a car holder(also made out of plastic).
Does anybody else has the same problem?
Can you post a picture of this issue?
wish i could help but like above pics would help as don't know what it could be. Been naked and then to dbrands and have no issues
I can confirm these issues. I'm on my 4th RMA because of this issue. My first device has a chip on the plastic piece by the power button, second device had what looked to be the mate finish wore off and a dead pixel on the display, the third device had the same thing and a strong pink hue on the bottom of the display, and now I'm waiting on my 4th RMA. By the way if this one is messed up I'm going to stick it out with my first device because the display on this device is perfect! You can also see a big difference in the display from the RMA units. The panel looks black when off like my GS6 but the RMA's I've had looked dark grey when off and not black. The plastic piece that sits between the display and metal seems to be an issue Google is tracking so hopefully it gets fixed. I have a white 64gb 6P if that helps. I did have pics of all the issues because I had to send them to Google for proof but I erased them. Sorry

I have this issue with mine. That plastic strip that goes around the screen got rip or broke in my Nexus 6P is flimsy and is coming off. I had my phone from launch week 1. Does warranty cover this? Is some minimum but for my OCD this issue is killing me.

The plastic part on my phone came from Google with dents and scuffs in it.
I have this issue also.
The plastic is quite fragile. My damage was caused by the Google nexus 6P case...
Have pics but cant post em because first post.
The black rubber like piece between the glass and case is coming off on my Nexus 6P. I've had the phone in the Genuine Official Nexus 6P Leather Folio Case Flip Cover since almost day one, so I'm a bit surprised after about 2years of use Build Number N2G470.
My answer was simple to this. Wanted a black and silver nexus 6p and when I removed the back to change it I noticed how flimsy the plastic was and was dented and cracked in places. So I took a razor blade when the phone was back together and removed the plastic all from around the edges and it now looks slot better. I did try and buy a mid frame before doing this as my LCD was perfect. But couldn't find one. Much better look now and the phone now looks brand new again and my ocd is at bay. Lol.

Doesn't that plastic filler strip (between glass and aluminum chassis) act as a retaining ring to hold in the glass? I have not taken my phone apart, but that thin black plastic piece has broken in several places (with sections missing). I assumed it acts like a snap ring in the groove to retain the glass screen. Am I wrong? Is it just a for aesthetic purposes?
Does anyone know if Google recognizes this as a defect and fixes it for free? Or.... can I remove the remaining pieces and use the phone without it?
It doesn't hold the screen in. It's designed to act as a buffer between the glass and the frame to help stop the glass crack or smash if you drop it. It's actually part of the mid frame attached to the glass. Mine did what yours did, hence when I put the new housing on, I trimmed it down with a razor blade level with the rear housing and it made it look so much better, while still doing good the job of helping stop the glass from cracking when dropped. To be honest, once a case was on the phone you couldn't tell anyway, also Google doesn't see it as a defect, just part of wear and tear. I tried a defect claim and they said no as it was damage I had caused, even though mine happened from taking it in and out of my spigen case on a few occasions. Hope that helps.
---------- Post added at 08:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:23 PM ----------
Also, you need to slide a slim pry tool between that plastic and the metal frame to remove the back. It's not in a ridge its part of the midframe of the phone.
