Something To Consider **Gulps** - Nexus 5X General

So apparently the official android marshmallow 6.0 is finally out today on the Nexus 5/6/9, so I decided to go ahead and search for reviews and I stumbled upon this video it's Nexus 6 on M (3gb ram) vs note 5 on Lollipop (4gb of ram) keep in mind it's also running TouchWiz and it's leaving nexus 6 marshmallow 6.0 in the dust... whyyy!!! So what can I expect from my new Nexus 5x 2gbs... I know I know... it's been discussed before and it's said that it would be fine but....guys I'm starting to reconsider my purchase as much as I wanted to love my phone I knew the truth would come out and everyone that was complaining about 2gbs of ram was right.... if the vanilla android 3gbs of ram is losing to touch wiz 4gbs than imagine only 2gbs...?

I didn't bother watching the video, all I'm going to say is wait until you have the phone in hand and get to try it yourself before passing judgement. If you don't like the performance you have 2 weeks to return for a refund. I'm one of the individuals that wanted the 5X to have 3GB RAM, but less because its actually needed at this point and more for future proofing. The N5 is still a smooth running excellent phone at 2 years old, I'm not sure the same will be said of the 5X in 2017, but I'm still looking forward to having a nexus again.

I thought the nexus 6 compared well to the note 5. Hard to believe that was stock marshmallow and not the dev preview. The lag and black screens that happen before launching apps don't happen on my Nex5 while on 6.0. My Nex5 I think was almost as fast as the note 5.

I, too, am with you on this. I'm on the n5 and marshmallow has been good in terms of smoothness. There are some minor problems but that's expected for a new major release

Ram has nothing to do with what you saw in this video.
The note 5 has the best processor of 2015... (1.9ghz 14nm chip). This is why its so much faster than the nexus 6 which uses a much older 28nm chip.

So should I be scared of an SD808 vs the big brother SD810??
Thanks in advance!!

If anything, people are actually having issues with the 810 because it gets too hot.

SD810 allows for EIS, the smart burst feature, and slo-mo @ 240fps on the 6P. If you don't care about that stuff then SD808 is fine

I consider it to be the fact the Nexus 6 is probably stock so the device has encryption enabled. So it isn't really a fair comparison. I would like to see the Note 5 encryption enabled then done again.

I'm not concerned, at least not yet. Here's a run test of the Nexus 5 vs Nexus 6, both running marshmallow.

That note 5 has the fastest soc out there and the fastest ufs storage of any android phone, so it'll have no trouble launching apps quickly, the amount of ram has nothing to do with this.
Why are you even trying to compare this to the 5x? The 5x has a slower cpu, slower storage, slower ddr3 ram... of course it'll be slower, doesn't matter if it has the latest os either. You want the fastest phone out there? Its called the s6/note5.

Regarding RAM management, the Nexus clearly wins here. The Note has more RAM and is constantly reloading Apps while multitasking... This is the typical Samsung crap.
2GB should be fine for 1080p...

Not necessarily. There's videos clearly showing the Note 5 needing to reload apps after 6-7 while a phone like the LG G4 doesn't.

It's not a bug for the Note 5. All a person needs to do for the Note 5 is change some things a viola never happens again. It requires root and Samsung just has their memory management too aggressive.

Thinking about these 3 phones

Hi, I was thinking about either getting these phones for T-Mobile:
LG Optimus G
Nexus 4
HTC One X
Which one do you guys think is the best one for the price? I don't really care about features, just the specs (But they're pretty much the same)
Because I play a lot of high-end games and stuff. yea.
Thanks in advance
Personally I'd go with the Nexus 4.
In terms of Specs the Nexus 4 and the LG Optimus G are literally the same device, I believe the LG Optimus G has a higher resolution camera but the Nexus 4 has a higher quality camera.
The One X might be slightly better for gaming because it has a tegra 3 but from my experience it makes the general android experience feel sluggish outside of gaming.
The Nexus 4's gpu keeps up well enough (assuming it doesn't beat it, I haven't checked benchmarks purely speaking from experience), and you get a vastly superior android experience.
On top of that there's the "feature" that the Nexus 4 will always have the latest version of android, but if you prefer Sense over AOSP that might be another reason to get the One X.

There is a 8GB and a 16 GB version and no micro SD slot. It's a toss up, it depends what you want. Sometimes you can't have everything, you have sacrifice something. The micro SD slot which the Nexus 4 doesn't have does not bug me. 16 GB is enough for me. I don't listen to music on my phone nor do I store videos such as movies and stuff, got a mp3 player for that. I'd rather get the fast updates from Google and stock Android.
It all depends on you OP. What DO YOU want?

Nexus 4, plain and simple. ASOP is the best android, no question. The nexus 4 will get all the latest versions of android faster then any other phone on earth. Its the best phone if you want the best android experience. Don't worry about storage either, 16GB is actually a very decent amount.

My one x got stolen recently, and it forced me to get a new phone. I bought a nexus 4, and I need to say that nexus 4 is a God in comparision with one x much smoother, runs cooler and has much better battery life. Don't think about one x, if you've got a chance, get a nexus straight away

When i was first looking at the N4 as an option i was worried about not having a SD slot, but have now been using my N4 for almost a month now and I still have 9GB free on the phone
BTW the nexus 4 that T-mobile is 16GB which is decent imo and my only other worry was not having the LTE on it but the HSPA+ is pretty damn good here where i live i see 7mb-15mb down which im also happy with , this phone is by far the best phone i have had in the last 5 years .
Correct me if I'm wrong but getting a HTC One X is rather difficult, isn't it? It stayed very few months on the market and got superseded by the One X+. The one X+ has a bigger battery and comes with 64Gig onboard. I saw very good deals for that bad boy recently. If you don't mind messing your hands with Custom ROMs, the One X+ and AOSP Android should be a sweet combination.
However, stock-by-stock, the N4 would be the winner. I think the only points where the One X+ would win over the N4 are onboard memory and that curved Gorilla screen. I just love the way the One X series look
The HTC One X lags while playing Need For Speed Most Wanted, Moderm Combat 4 and some games

I had a Nexus 10 and liked it a lot. I now have the Note 10.1 1014 Wifi (exynos) and it is a better tablet all the way around. Speed wise it feels much faster. The battery life is at least 50% better. The screen seems a bit better. It is smaller and lighter than the Nexus 10 also. Performance wise Snapdragon versus Exynos, the Exynos is slightly faster CPU wise and the Snapdragon is slightly faster GPU wise. The LTE snapdragon model is not officially available in the states yet. The camera is way better and the S pen is not just a gimmick. The New Note 10.1 is the most useful tablet day to day that I have owned and I have owned a ton of them.

+1 to everything he said. This tablet is way better than the current nexus 10. The nexus 10 never got to be properly optimized and felt much more sluggish and buggy. I can give many details if you want, but I bet you won't be disappointed with the upgrade.

I would like to know your opinion on the screens...as far as I know, nexus 10 came with a rgb subpixel arrangement, while Note came with a somehow strange rg bw arrangement. Supposedly one shouldn't be able to see the difference since the pixel density is so high, but I can and do see the tiny jagged dots, and it's not a very nice feeling though...that's why I wanna know how it compares to nexus 10. Thank you!

The screen is noticeably better on the note. The nexus has pale colors in comparison, and while in the note they might feel a little bit over emphasized and warm the screen is nicer to watch, specially at higher levels of brightness. Regarding definition and pixels... the note might appear sharper bit it's probably due to the colors and not for the density or anything similar. I bet you cannot tell the difference resolution/subpixel wise but the final feeling is that the note offers a far superior screen IMHO.
I have both and have had the Nexus 10 since April this year and I manually updated it to kitkat. My note 10.1 is running the latest mk1.
The Note is a lot more powerful on paper but the nexus10 is definitely more responsive. It really is samsungs touchwiz that's slowing down the note. However, the note destroys the nexus 10 on all benchmarks (if it matters anyway).
Screen sharpness I would say is the same. However, I prefer the colours on the note 10 as the nexus 10 feels underwhelming.
Both have stereo speakers and the nexus 10 has the edge because of its placement. But the note 10 isnt bad, it is actually loud I dont mind the speakers facing sideways.
I bought the note 10 because I need the stylus. I bring my note 10 to work everyday and use the stylus all the time. If I didnt need the stylus then I would be sticking with my nexus 10.

I agree with everything you said except with the responsiveness. I'm not saying you are wrong it laying, but in my experience, I almost have the same configuration right now that I had in the Nexus: Same launcher, same keyboard, same apps. I'm using it exactly the same way I used to use my Nexus, and I can tell you I've never had in my hands a tablet that responsive. It is far more responsive than my Note II as well. I tried the Nexus 10 with all the stick operating system except KitKat, Cyanogenmod, Paranoid Android and Revolt. 4.3 helped but the Nexus had been never at the level of the Note. This is just my experience, and I've seen a lot of divergence I'm the comments of people so I cannot tell you exactly what makes the difference.
By the way, I forgot to mention I bought the Nexus 10 the first week it came out, so maybe they did a running change in the hardware that improved performance in more modern models.

Im comparing it stock vs stock. No 3rd party launchers.
For ME, the nexus 10 "feels" faster, smoother and more responsive. Even if I know that the note 10 has a lot more power. The nexus 10 has come a long way with updates, and google have mostly polished the experience (it still stutters occasionally, but not as much as my note 10). I just hope samsung will continue optimizing this tablet and polish things out.

One of the apps in which I feel the difference the most is Chrome. Apart from the launcher, Chrome has been always sluggish to me on the Nexus 10. It works flawlessly in the Note.
The apps open much faster on the Note as well. And it moves between apps faster.
I definitely find the Note superior to the Nexus and I'm not trying to open a discussion up. This is just my mileage in case somebody find it helpful. Your mileage can vary of course.

So I went to Bestbuy to try the table out.
I've left being very disappointed with its responsiveness. They had Exynos model runnings 4.3 android. The tablet was dead slow due to touchwiz.
Chrome was extremely slow opening new tabs and in navigation through web sites.
Samsung should really kill the touch wiz or produce Google Edition for every of its devices to run a stock android.

Are you sure it was completely updated? Mine doesn't perform as the ones on bestbuy. Have into account that's a display model.
Anyways, not trying to convince you. You can stick with the Nexus 10. I cannot be happier having gotten rid of it, but if it works fine for you, why would you replace it?
I find it strange people complain about the lag in the new Note. I have the Note 10.1 2014 edition LTE version with Snapdragon and Chrome browser flies with it. It is a lot smoother than my old Note 10.1 ever was when browsing the web. I haven't encountered much lag elsewhere either. The home screen transitions were not silky smooth before I removed the widgets that were on the homescreens by default, but after that I really have no complaints there either.
Also the Note specific features are really well made this time in my opinion. Especially the new clipboard app is excellent with the pen (very quick to just cut and paste stuff with the pen while browsing the web or reading pdf magazines etc).

I think it's the best tablet out there by a long far, and in fact, the only one that has satisfied me since the very first moment. Thus, I cannot agree more with you.

I don't know. I didn't try to update it via Check updates.
Maybe it was bloated with apps, 'cause still it's a demo version. But it was slow.
I had a lot of Samsung phones, Galaxy S2, S3, S4, S4 GE. I know the difference between Android with touchwiz and without it.
I hoped that a faster CPU can run touchwiz smoother, but there is no magic. Nexus 10 on latest 4.4 runs smoother.
Maybe I should try Snapdragon 800 version. Nexus 5 is uber fast on it.

The Nexus 5 is pushing far fewer pixels and bare bones Android so it should be uber fast. Anything running AOSP should be super fast. Again I had the Nexus 10 and now have the Exynos version of the Note 2014. I got rid of the Nexus 10 the week before I bought the Note. The Note blows the Nexus 10 out of the water even with the bloat of Touchwiz. The most important difference though is the battery life. The Note has almost double the battery life of the Nexus 10 with my usage. I do use the Note a lot more than the Nexus just because of the S pen for work. I would not trust a demo unit in a store and there are many reviews on the web for the Note 2014.

[Q] Should I buy the Exynos variant today?

Hello everyone
Long story short, I decided to upgrade and went with an M9 (or three), and each one had a different problem. All of them suffered from light leaks, the last one stuck pixel too. The camera is poor, so I am weighing my options. Coming from a G3, my obvious choice would be a G4 but...BUT !
I have managed to find the Exynos variant of the Note 4 for about 378 pounds, brand new and sealed. My question is (for current users) - would you consider it future proof? Is it still snappy, good, and a good investement for another year or so? Would you recommend it over the G4?
Many thanks
Well, I was in the same boat as you: Wanted to upgrade from my G3 because I had the 2GB variant, it was a lagfest with launcher redraws and apps closing all the time. AOSP had good performance but also had bugs and the camera sucked.
So I found the Exynos Note 4 for a good prince in my area and decided to take the plunge even though I never owned a samsung phone before, and bought it based on the interest I had on the Note II back then and some superficial reviews I've had read about it.
I have absolutely no regrets whatsoever, the Note 4 definitely feels like an upgrade from the G3. It's faster, the screen has better colors and contrast, better visibility in the sun, and touchwiz came a long way from the old days where it was regarded as one of the worst manufacturer skins to android. The note 4 has many features that amazed me, including the best one-hand mode implementation so far.
I say go with it, you won't be disappointed.

If you have a choice NEVER go for exynos ESPECIALLY if you want to root/flash roms later on. If you are fine with stock rom then it doesn't matter which you go for. Just know that stock is a little laggy no matter which variant you go for.
I hated the lag and finally installed CM and am not looking back, you can get SPEN functionality on AOSP roms now too so not really an issue. CM FLIES on note 4, so fast!!!!

Maybe I should've worded my post differently. The snapdragon isn't available in my area, so there was no option of choosing variants. Exynos has no aosp, but SimplRom is pretty fast and yet has all the built in spen functionality.

Welcome to the family my brothers
I have the Exynos version & it's great
I recently got a Note 4 N910C, which is the Exynos model for the EU and I can honestly say that I love it.
I seek a kind advice, I currently have a 2GB G3 and i am looking to upgrade (as i wont have an opportunity to do that in future) Been deciding between an iphone 6plus and note 4, or basically any other big phone. So should i go for a note 4 or a different device? My main concern is if the note will be a solid choise for about 2 years or so.

I know that, what i also know is that when they are released they will cost a ton in my country so im afraid that i wont be able to aford them. But i guess ill have to just wait and see

Get the exynos, the CPU will be cooler therefore you will have no underclock due to high temps like 4 core snapdragon. Also a dev here (sorry i dont remember his name) is working on CM for our phone with exynos chip. But i really don't feel like i need to change the stock samsung rom so bad, some guys here are drowning on a teaspoon of water. Note 4 is one of the best phones atm, go for it.

Well oneplus one costs about as much as exynos note 4 here, it is cheaper but the difference is not that big so i think that oneplus two will be about the same price as a note

mine is lag free once i removed all the bloat, you should try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/general/guide-bloating-touchwizzing-note-5-t3184563

I haven't removed any bloat since I got my phone, i'm running it 100% stock so I can point out and laugh at these idiots trying to talk about how slow the phone is with all the bloat, well at least on the AT&T version there is pretty much no slow downs at all, this phone really is a workhorse. 6 days of use and it's not crashed or hard locked, it hasn't force closed an application while I was trying to use it, and it hasn't even done more than a slight hiccup when I first got it out of the box.
For the first 2-3 hours my phone was downloading apps and updates and installing everything so it was a bit slow during the first 2-3 hour time period. But ever since that all finished it has been flawless.
Yeah I don't know where anyone saying lag. Lag is non existence on the note 5 Verizon version.
Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
I was very impressed by how lag free the Note 5 is after reinstalling the apps I had on my note 4. So far Samsung has produced a beast of a phone here!

This is a good point. If the story from OP is at all true its surely because his mom signed in, then it started auto downloading all of her apps, and it was laggy while it was installing 120 apps so she said she didn't like it. Other than that there is no chance this is even remotely true. I just went from a Nexus 6, which is leagues faster than the N4, to the Note 5 and its a huge improvement. I was not very impressed by the N6. Was quite slow right from the start. I went to that from the M8 and it felt slow out of the box compared to that. The Note 5 is the only phone I've used that impressed me more than the M8.
my note 4 was lag free when i first got it but i started noticing lag after a couple weeks of use..tw cause much of a slowdown
Lol the nexus 4 was the biggest piece of **** I've ever owned. You sir and your alleged mom are full of it. Does she have kik by any chance? ?
Absolutely no lag on the Note 5.

I am happy about note 5, but TBH my Nexus 6 even with dev. preview was smoother. 90% I am smooth sailing however sometimes I have hiccups like text message not showing up til like 30 seconds after the fact and a few force close every now and then. Nothing to complain about, I mean Nexus does have the stupid multi task bug where you switch between apps and and only half the screen shows up

W trust me, fastest phone ive ever used. I didnt even lower my animation down to .5 like i usually do.
Wouldn't surprise me the nexus 4 holding up so well. Nexus lack features, don't have the top tier specs but they "just work" even gnex ran pretty smooth on LP considering it's age and no more official support I say it held it's a lot better than other phones of that time

I agree. I've only had the phone for about 2 days but it is easily the fastest phone I've ever used. Noticeably faster than my wife's S6 which I thought was very fast. Hopefully it will stay that way.

Nexus 6p vs note 5

I currently have a 32gb black sapphire note 5 from tmobile which I love a lot.. If I had to be honest with myself I'd have to say my battery heats up from time to time and all the Knox bs drives me crazy.. I have been considering getting the 6p and giving my mom my note 5 so it stays in house and I can always switch back to it and give my mom the 6p.. I'm wondering for those who have it if the jump is truly worth it..
I've read about the 6p bending and the sound quality not being so great and sounds muffled etc.. Also someone mentioned it heats up as well.. Can anyone help with any feedback before I make the plunge??...

Yes, do some searching. Plenty of threads open about same topic. Check your Note 5 in a dark room, dark wallpaper, does it have this issue?

I have a 128gb Frost 6P. I have had a lot of the best flagship devices over the years and this is the best Android device I have ever used. Have not experienced heating issues, stutters, lag...its really just a great device. Of your worried about bending (which I think has been over blown) use a case.
Highly recommended.

Thanks, have you had the note 5 or s6??.. I had opo and that made me not like aosp and prefer tw.. As of now once I sell my moms s6 I'll be getting the 6p.. I have a 64gb otg that I'm sure I can use on a 32gb 6p so I'll be fine in memory lol.. How's the frost looking??..

The only time I have experienced a heating issue was while using the phone and charging at the same time. I ran antutu twice... Both times after using the phone for a while and other apps open.. Once with the microfiber case on and once naked. With case I got 50k, without 59.5. The phone is excellent and I have not run into issues that others have reported.

No have not owned a Note 5 but do own a 64gb S6. Don't like TW and the S6 is starting to stutter and lag. The battery life as well has been awful from the start. I have an OPO as well and it was a decent device (good battery life).
Frost looks great, those chamfered edges really pop and its not nearly as slippery as a glass device. I'm a Nexus guy though....I like using the UI the way Google intended and being first in line for updates.
Good luck man, I have heard good things about the Note 5 so I'm sure you can't go wrong either way.

Well I've had the s2 s3 s4 s5 s6 now note 5..i did have an opo which the screen was crap compared to Sammy..
Personally I dont use very many tw apps.. My launcher is usually nova I use solid explorer and chrome.. When purchasing a phone external SD and battery are important as is the camera.. Nowadays extSdCard and battery seem to be a thing of the past so a great camera is good cause I have a soon to be 3 yr old and capturing moments are important..
I like sms time stamps for each message no matter how close or far apart the times are in between.. I love to root and theme my phone with center clock and 3minit... I use to be a huge aosp supporter but honestly Sammy screens is what make me a fan boy..

Honestly, the 6p is a fantastic phone. My favorite phone to date, but I've grown to prefer pure Android over TW, Sense, etc. If you really like TW then I say try to figure out your heating issue and stick with the note 5. Try turning the display to basic, the other settings seem to be pretty taxing on the phone. The note has 2 huge advantages over the 6p imo: the camera software and one handed mode.

Video recording is nothing special on the Nexus 6p. Also screen is awesome but if you hold it side by side against the Note 5 you will want the Note 5. Eye gets used though, so if you already use nova on your Note 5 and apps from the Playstore to substitute Samsung's own apps you might like the phone. I say try it, you have 15 days to return it. Usually Nexus devices are for those people that know how to tweak their phone and prefer minimalistic style.

I Have both phones and they are both beasts. I find that thanks to the lighter touchwiz and the combination of exynos and 4gb of RAM the note 5 is as snappy and lag free as the Nexus 6P. I give the Note 5 the edge on the camera side and the N6P for the battery. It all comes down to what you need. If you absolutely love the note 5 camera you're going to miss it. If you are familiar and appreciate the stock android experience of the nexus line then by all means get it. Best nexus phone by far you will not regret it.
