Center zone of the touchscreen is dead to finger. MOST WEIRD WORKAROUND EVER. - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now comes the weirdest thing ever (or maybe its common, I am not expert), but when I place a finger in the edge of the phone (not even the screen edge, just over the metallic edge, like just grabing the phone with one hand), the center zone of the touchscreen works fine and the problem is solved, but the right edge is still with problems, and it is not solved with this strange "finger in the edge" workaround, look :
(If I place other finger in the screen instead of the metallic edge, it solves the problem too)
This is a new phone, is this a issue easily solved and common ?? or I should just change the phone using the warranty ???? Help please, this is a new phone should I ask for another new one without this issues ?

please someone help me with the giant pictures, I messed up that

Definitely a bad screen.

UNREAL !!!!! that fixed this problem for me !!! CANT BELIEVE IT
I tought your solution was for rooted phones with custom OS, unbelievable
THANK YOU !!!!!
Do you have (or someone) some kind of insight about this problem ?? what cause it ? this could happen again ?

The only time I have seen this happen, is when the wrong recovery has been flashed after rooting.
Maybe an OTA update caused the problem.

Just purchased the phone was with KitKat and I updated to Lollipop first day via OTA, maybe that caused the problem (but I think everyone did that, why me? bad luck xD)

Did the upgrade to Marshmallow a couple of weeks ago on my Optus SM-910G (build number MMB29M.N910GDTU1DPF4), and ever since the whole bottom of the screen was nearly useless, requiring multiple presses to get keys registered, Swype was useless, stock keyboard pretty useless, but with the s-pen, it was perfect. When I opened an s-note action memo and zig zagged from top to bottom of screen (by finger) without taking my finger off the screen, I found two dead areas, 1/3 down top left where it didn't really harm much, and a big big zone on the bottom about 10mm high and nearly the whole bottom section where it required multiple swipes across to get some of the area "drawn" on. I tried a factory reset with no improvement at all (except battery life LOL).
Just found this TSP tip today on another forum, gave it a shot, and yay, screen perfect again! Thanks XDA (the tip ending up on androidcentral in an S6 thread where my googling about Note 4 touch screen problems took me for some reason).

Trouble with green line appearing on screen

Anyone got this super irritating problem where u try to touch the screen to activate a button or swipe, but only a green line appears and what u want is not done?
Input was set to TP, but trying to hit the buttons to switch between text and numeric (the top bar) results in it.
Not sure why.....anybody have any idea?

I assume you're using Swype?
If so, you should really be asking those guys the question. It looks like a bug with their software.

Nope....swype has been banished from the phone. Unless it leave remnants behind?
Besides, it isn't active, how can it cause such a problem?
It doesn't just happen at the keyboard area....it happens all over the phone/screen. Even in the Sense interface until a reset makes it go away. It comes back randomly, pretty rare, but it's still irritating.

Okay - I just assumed that because you mentioned swiping and I don't recognise the keyboard.
So you're saying that you can sometimes draw green lines over the Sense UI with your finger? If so, it's definitely a piece of software you've installed, as that's never been seen before and I'm pretty sure it would have been picked up by now.
What did you install last before this started happening? And how often does it happen?
No problem.
I guess as much, but I can't really figure out what is the problematic app. Swype would be my guess, but it has already been uninstalled.
It actually came up a few weeks ago, that was when Swype was still present. But after a reset it went away. Now I have uninstalled Swype and replaced with TP4, and it came back right during a MSN conversation.... You can imagine my frustration in having a conversation when I couldn't swipe and press buttons properly.
Just trying my luck to see if anyone has encountered similar problems.
Finally found someone with the same problem..anyone else?

Trying to find out the culprit app/cab so that it can be gone FOREVER.
OK...it definitely has something to do with the handwriting input. Appeared after a hard reset with no apps/cabs installed.
Hard to replicate, soft reset will make it go away until it decides to rear it's head again. Very infrequently I might add....another point to chalk up to HD2's list of bugs again.

Can't touch bottom of screen

Well, I'm running the latest CM10.1 Nightly, and no other mods. For some reason, in some apps I can't touch things at the bottom of the screen. For instance, in Snapseed, I can't apply an edit, because it doesn't let me touch it. Also, in the messages app it takes forever to get the keyboard to come up. Does anyone else have this problem? Is it a CM10 thing? TIA!
So, I flashed the Google Official ROM, and still the problem persists. Going to fully unroot and see if it fixes itself.

Could I please get some opinions? This is getting very annoying. It only seems to happen in apps, because I can access the app drawer and docked apps fine. I flashed the stock ROM, and un-rooted but the problem is still here. Any help?
Go into developer options. There should be an option for Pointer Location. Turn that on, and scribble all over the area you're having touch problems with. See if it is even registering your touches.

while in that same area.. another option is z-device test. go to screen and menu key to perform sensitivity tests and such. if you dont have a menu key in the navbar... it will not work.
Okay, thanks for the tips guys. This is really weird. There's like, a barrier where I can't touch at the bottom of the screen. I took some screenshots to show you guys.

I figured this out and it's pretty weird. The height of the deadzone is exactly the same as the height of the nav. bar. Anyone got any ideas? Or has LG f***ed me over?

It would seem to be a software issue, where the launcher believes you are touching the nav bar so ignores input, that'd be my guess.
Try a different launcher maybe?
Another weird discovery. It seems that if I swipe over the dead-zone fast enough, it registers. That leads me to believe that it's a software problem, but after flashing stock ROM, un-rooting, and relocking I don't see how it could be. This is weird.

S Pen Hand Writing Recognition

Hello guys.
I have been using s note hand writing recognition for a while now but today it stopped working.
I checked with a colleague at work who has a note 3 he had the same problem,
I also called some friends who owned a note 3 they all had the same problem.
I would like to know if you guys (note 3 owners) are having the same problem as well?
I just tested this:
1. Open S Note
2. Write something
3. Mark the text that i wrote
4. Click "Transform into: Text"
and it worked! Is this the same you are trying to do but it is unsuccessfull? Or anything else?
Just let me know and i'll test.
I am doing exactly the same steps that you mentioned and am still having the problem; what makes me crazy that yesterday night it was working fine and plus four other galaxy note 3 owners are having the same problem today.

Today mine stopped working. It works fine if I pull up "Action Memo", but it doesn't work if I go in to the browser and then try to hand-write a search term in Google.
Just test mine and It works well

I tested this and it is the same for me aswell! My steps above works, but when i try a google search and type nothing happens. It should be automatically transferred into text but the written text is not changing at all. I can paint a horse with no way of delete it other than take down and open up the "keyboard" again.
So wait - is this some kind of online service? Isnt it translated locally on the device?
Edit: To conclude, it works in some parts of the phone but does not work in others.

Action memo is working fine every where on the device what does not work is hand recognition in samsung keyboard.
If you point on the searchbox with your pen you get a little square. Point at that and google search works perfect.
Its been discussed in Q/A, if you set the date back to the 28th sept it will work again as before.

[Q] How long do you think it will take samsung to fix the issues with the note 3?

There are several problems with the note 3 at this moment, most notably the region lock not being removed after inserting a local sim, and the multi touch issue (4.3 related?). Obviously there are things they won't want to fix (Knoxflags, flash counters etc)
How long do you think it will take them to issue an update? I mean, i have heard somewhere about them issuing an update soon for the region unlocking issue soon, but i dont know about the multi touch problems (which are very similar to the N7 2013)
In addition, do you think the community will beat them to it?
What multi-touch problems on the Note 3 are you referring to? I have not had any problem apart from the single handed gesture not working if any accessibilty functions are enabled for third party apps which also causes the stock browser to talk if enabled.

About Multi Touch, that's a hardware issue, because some phones like mine don't have it.
So send it back for a free replacement.
Region lock will probably be fixed, knox isn't a problem to "fix".

SOLVED!!!!
Had the same issue and its cuz the USB debugging was turned off in the Developer apps to my luck I had it on, but turned it off 1 week prior to my ph crashing... lol I tried EVERYTHING for 3 days and I'm tech savy lol What I ended up doing was using my fiance's note 3 to back up all her files via the SD card on her phone and then loaded it into mine and it worked like a charm. It's even a free app from the play store called "Root Browser" and NO you do not have to root their phone to copy their files... Copy the files, on the broken phone do the recovery mode (Volume Up + Home Key + Power Button) then load from external source. Be sure to wipe your data and all that before installing on the broken ph.... and bada-bing bada-bang! FIXED!
I suggest downloading that in the future and keeping that spare SD card in the GUN SAFE!!! just in case you happen to re-root your phone later lol
Hope this helps out since I about threw my Note 3 at the wall from all the looping frustration...lol Tried Odin, Kies3 and nothing... even the ABD cmd and no luck.... Idk why I didn't think about doing that in the past lol GOOD LUCK! :fingers-crossed:

Few problems. If anyone could advice.

My phone is stock 4.4.2 with recent updates and not rooted. No issues at all just few small issues.
1) This is a weird one, if I play a video and sometime after closing video player the screen becomes like high sharpness, the white color in the screen increases. Its hard to notice but it does. But after turning off the screen and turn on again it became normal. Also I tried taking screenshot of both condition but all looks normal in that, only visually I can see that. Anyone see this issue ever?
2) Skype is very important for me for work and in its setting > Notification > I checked Vibration but it never does. Its notification sound cant change also its very low to hear outside. Please advice.
3) Spen: I dont know if its usual for everyone as I didnt tried any other Note 3 but in my phone the Spen is not responsive mostly at the screen edges. Suppose drawing a line it ends before the screen edge and mostly same all sides. I’ve a screen protector but that is not a thicker one. Its very thin so I doubt if the screen protector could cause this.
1- I notice that all the time ur not the only one
2- try clearing the skype data and reinstall it.
3- no problems with spen on my phone. I have a pretty thick screen protector on it as well. I didnt understand by unresponsive if u meant dead spots or just slower to draw but either way no problems on my handset.
Cheers!

Thanks for your feedback.
1) Its good to know I’m not alone, and probably a OS fault. Hope on next update this will be fixed.
2) I don’t want to clear skype data as I don’t want to lose chat histories. Somewhere I read this will require to enable Vibration 1st on setting and then it will work. But I have already enabled vib for call. Don’t know if there have any other option in setting to enable vibration.
3) By unresponsive I mean it works flawlessly but I’ve to press it little hard on the screen to write properly. With firm writing or light gentle pressure if draw a straight line across the screen it creates a line like this ------------- gap ------------- gap ------------------------
Also it was not working on a particular spot (attached image) but today I found it was due to the flip cover magnet. If I keep the magnet away it works perfectly.
