Install CM 12.1 keyboard? - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to get the CM12.1 Keyboard with the stock ROM? I've been running CM since froyo and have gotten to really like the keyboard over the years. Something else that CM has that I miss is the ability to scroll the cursor with added soft keys. Is there a way to enable that in stock?

AOSP keyboard? It is basically google keyboard.

The Google keyboard doesn't have all the special symbols when you long press a key.

What special symbols?

You can access things like forward slashes by long pressing the corresponding letter. Like the numbers on the top row. I agree, it's nice to have. Google should integrate it into the Google keyboard.

CM uses AOSP Keyboard.
Sent from my SCH-R530U using Tapatalk

Everything on the second and third row has a symbol associated with the key that you can insert on a long press. This is how the keyboard is on my wife's galaxy tab 3, my galaxy tab pro, my HTC one m8, my one plus one, my nexus 4 and I think my lg optimus v all running cm9-12.1.
You can also see the < & > I mentioned in the op. Those can be used to move the cursor.

Yeah that is AOSP keyboard there is an cm thread now install it then extract the AOSP keyboard.

I found this by @Shaftamle. It is a modified Google keyboard but there is one with the special symbols. It's working good so far here. The only thing is that I had to add the .apk extension after downloading it but then it installs fine. http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/lollipop-keyboard-phones-root-t2910268

If I knew how to do that I wouldn't be asking how to install it. I'd expect this kind of answer in a Dev thread, but not in a q&a thread.

Have you used Titanium back up? You back up AOSP keyboard then restore it on stock.

Do you expect everyone to hold your hand through the process? This person was kind enough to come up with a solution for you, the least you can do is thank and then ask them for instructions on how to install it the way they told you to. I would help you, but entitled people don't deserve it in my book.

Thanks, I tried this and it just keeps failing. I exported the backup to dropbox, downloaded to stock and tried to import it and it just says failed. I first tried to convert system app to user and that did not do anything.
From my days with the LG Optimus V I recall talk of copying a system file and then changing the permissions and that would install it. I never did it, is that something that is still possible? Or is there something relatively easy that I can do to convert it to a user app?
(I have an alternative working now, but would like to learn how to do this)
Thanks for the help @Orion116

thanks for the link to APK I can type as well as on samsung keyboard! cheers the stock google keyboard is crap

Also, don't forget that these Gingerbread Keyboards are all on the Market now. No need to hack one on to your phone.

I have one from the market that is way more customizable and highly recommmend it. Just search "gingerbread"

What keyboard is for YOU?

What keyboard do you like best? The one that looks the best? The one you can type fastest from with ease?
I just tried the themed android keyboard from miui and damnnn am I typing fast.
If I was to be using I hand though Swype "hands down"

I bet you do a lot of that one handed typing don't you.
UltraKeyboard is my keyboard of choice. Worth the couple bucks. Can fully theme it how you want it, including key size and spacing, has a ton, a ton, of features, and a swype like function that you can train and set pause parameters on. I highly recommend it.
Swiftkey is good too, if I could theme it I would probably use that all the time.
I'm using swiftkey, the only thing that I don't like that's it's bright, I would rather have a darker keyboard.
Smartkeyboard why? Because it's smart duhh
smart keyboard pro for me. ridiculous customization
+ custom smileys xD

[Q] Does the Nexus 4 / Android 4.2 come with a T9 Dialer?

You all know it, the T9 Dialer Apps for Calling people. Since HTC added this to their old Desire in 2010, I'm using this feature and can't live without it.
But as far as I know the Dialer App in Android 4.1 does not have this feature, so I fear it won't be there in Android 4.2 as well?
I for my case, am using CM9 on my Desire, where this feature has been added to the stock Android dialer App. But it would be great if Google added this as well. Otherwise I / we must use T9 dialers from the play store, which isn't such a big problem
So is there a T9 Dialer in Android 4.2?
If its not in stock you install as an app as you say so the point of your post was...
My question was if the T9 Dialer is now Stock or not. I simply don't know.
No I don't think there will be
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I know it was added to the stock dialer back in CM7, but I'm not sure about stock android.
Tapatalk² from my Optimus V
I'd like to know the answer to that too please!
I doubt that it will be integrated inside Jelly Bean 4.2.0; anyway it's not in JB 4.1.2
Just install CM10 when it's out.
Stock 4.1.2 on Galaxy Nexus doesn't have a T9-dialer.

Yes, like how you sent a sms on older phones with only a numpad. The dialer searches for possible combinations in your contact list that match the keys you pressed (without the need to press 4 times on 9 to get a Z).
I seriously don't understand why this option is still not in Android. Old phones from almost a decade ago had this option. Give us at least the option.

T9 is a patented feature and therefore Google did not include this feature.
It will be there in future CM builds (and others as well). If you build AOSP yourself, just add the CM contacts repo to the source; if not, you can copy the Phone.apk from cm to your rom but you will need root.

Well, just wait until the first custom roms start rolling out. If you're impatient, then browse through the galaxy nexus forums and see if there's a 4.2 custom rom with t9 dialer. But i cannot guarantee it will work on the nexus 4 (although i think it will). I would just wait a bit, in the meantime you can try dialerone or one of those alternatives...
Try Dialer ONE. I love it. It can be customized with different layouts.

Thanks, but i meant the actual CM10 and not for Nexus 4.
I have since yesterday Android 4.2 on my Galaxy Nexus and i miss the T9 Dialer from CM 10.
So it would be great if i can download the Phone.apk from CM 10 or the first nightly with Android 4.2 and replace it on my stock rom with 4.2!

I know Dialer ONE, but i want to use the stock dialer. It's great, it looks great. The only thing i miss is the T9 dialer!
Another +1 for Dialer One. Not it's not stock but if it weren't for the slightly odd looking launch icon you'd think it was. Google really do need to grip this issue in the stock ROM though.
This is ExDialer. Not much different from stock IMO and with t9. Bottom pic stock.

AutoCorrect not working

I have selected a default language, predictive text on but the default keyboard will not autocorrect anything. It will make suggestions but when I hit space it doesnt change anything. I have to tap the word at the top if I want it to be replaced. Anyone else having this issue? I used swiftkey before on my S3 so I am not sure if this is how the default keyboard should react. I may just go back to swiftkey but I thought this keyboard was developed by them and would work the same way.
Yeah I have noticed this. Love the set up but going to have to use a different one cause of this. Works great when swyping with it though

I thought swiftkey flow was just the swype equivalent.
Mine has Swype as an input option. I saw it when I loaded up my Swiftkey.
I dont think auto correct was included for some weird reason...there is no setting to enable or disable auto correct or even to automatically input suggested words...which is annoying since I am not used to the keyboard and make TONS of spelling mistakes (hitting letters instead of space or pressing numbers instead of letters) so I find my self having to manually correct things...lame, really my only complaint on this phone...seriously samsung why the hell would you not put auto correct on a smartphone...its kind of a freaking standard...and I dont really like aftermarket keyboards

They seemed to have missed quite a bit with the phone =/. As sad as it is to say.. The S4 doesn't seem like a typical Samsung release compared to the Note 2 and S3. I'm pretty disappointed in the S4 yo be perfectly honest. Maybe if I had bought the international version things would have been different. I live in the US tho so I couldn't afford to send it overseas if there was something wrong with it.

Due to the current litigation between Apple and Samsung and the fact that Apple has a patent on auto correct the United States Samsung Galaxy S4 does not have auto correct in the built in Samsung keyboard. However, I believe that Google released the stock android keyboard in the play store yesterday. This keyboard has AutoCorrect built in an gives you the vanilla keyboard experience across all android phones.

GS4 Running slowly, keyboard missing keys, and just other miscues

Hey Guys
So I am coming up from an HTC Evo 4G..(not LTE) so you already know this phone is a come up for me. I noticed, however, that the phone is running a tad slowly. Here are a few examples, maybe you all could help me out.
First - when I put in my password pin the phone will lag and catch up when I press OK. Now, technically, this is not that much of an issue because the phone opens up when I press OK...but to see that lag is a little disconcerting.
Second - if I am typing some messages the keyboard will miss certain inputs in my typing. Now maybe I am typing a little too fast, but, come on? I know I am touching those keys... I am using SmartKeyboard but I figure that could be an issue too.
I notice that my ram climbs up pretty high. I clear all my programs...but still. Anyway to remove this bloatware?
Finally is there a root out yet?
Thanks guys. Sorry for the litany of questions

There is a root available for the phone as well as a stock ROM that is entirely free of bloatware located here.
The lag may, in fact, be the keyboard you're using. The most popular keyboard of choice - and for good reason - is SwiftKey; have you given this keyboard a shot? I use it myself and type extremely fast and it keeps up better than my iPhone 4S ever did.

You can try to uninstall most of the bloatware apps but a lot of them aren't able to be uninstalled which is why people root and head to a custom ROM.
Sooner or later you'll find yourself flashing AOSP ROMs for a complete Vanilla stock Android experience and a performance increase and flashing often.
It's an addiction, I caution you my friend!

o yes, i understood that. but I just don't want to brick this thing...I'm a little nervous about that
its kinda hard to brick any samsung galaxy phone.. u would have to do thing really stupid for a brick
100% stock here and using the stock samsung keyboard I also can validate the lag and skippy issues. The chief editor over at phone dog goes over and over about this. So its kind of a known issue. I am coming from the s3 and it was smoother when it came to typing and multitasking. I end freezing and dropping frames a lot I am hoping samsung comes up with a fix.
