What do you guys suggest? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello folks,:good:
A few days ago i made a thread about how i bought 3 brand new note 4's...and all of them had either a loose power button or a little wobbly home button. I have already lost so much money in swapping as there is no return period offered where i live and these minor manufacturing defects arent cov ered under warranty as long as they don't affect phones functionality.
Anyway so i am phoneless right now. I could buy a note 5 or s6 edge but after watching those disassembly videos i dont want to buy a phone which comes with a built in expiration date ( no removable battery).... i will never buy another samsung unless it has a removable battery atleast. So i need suggestions on which phone should i buy now?
1) Try another note 4? and live with loose buttons if i end up getting one with the same issues....(which is most likely the case)
2) buy iphone 6 ? ....its battery is much easier to replace and is not glued to screen (like s6's battery).
3) LG G4 - I wanted to buy this phone but there are alot of users reporting "green spot" in their camera which develops after some days of use.
4) please suggest any other phones with removeable battery and good specs. ( Anything other than s6, s6 edge , s6 edge plus or note 5)
Thanks alot:good:

The home button on my n910a wobbles a little bit, as does the one on my Note 10.1 (2014 ed) tablet. A little wobble is normal. I mean, the button is a separate piece sticking through a hole in the phone's body.
It's up to you as to what you want to end up with. I can't help you there. You just can't be super OCD with it, as long as the device works correctly.
I will give you another phone choice though. Moto X Style/Pure Edition. Specs are good and it should get fairly fast updates. Nexus phones would be faster, but since Motorola is now owned by Google, I'd expect updates to come right after Nexus (unless you get a carrier version).

[Q] S4 vs Note 2

I already got 2 S4 coming, but question is, I keep reading around in different threads that maybe the Note 2 is a better device than the S4, a few people who've already got their S4 are saying that the S4 does not compare to the Note 2, my wife wanted the note 2, and I talked her out of it....man I am in deep shi$ if she gets wind of any of this....and she reads a few areas here in xda...I smell the dog house coming
Throw out a few opinions...PLEASE! save me

I have never used a S4 (I do own a Note 2) and based on specs alone the S4 wins (full hd display with almost twice the pixel density and dual quad core processors). Good news is, if your wife really wants a Note 2 you should be able to easily sell your S4, buy a Note 2 and pocket a few hundred bucks.

Thank you for that advice, spec wise is what I sold her on, but there a few people out there bashing the S4.
I am going to keep her out of the forums until she gets the S4 in her hand, she has a note 1 now.
My wife has a note 2 and the only thing to be envious about is battery life. After using the s4 for a week or two now, I'm always taken back on the screen quality of the note 2. It's no where near as good as the s4. Same goes for ergonomics, camera and so on. You made the right choice, don't listen to trolls and ask yourself, if the note 2 is so much better, why are their fan base posing in the s4 section?

Once the S4 gets some stable custom roms out with custom kernels I am sure the S4's battery life issues will be a non factor. I run Jedi Master 13 with Saberkernel 23 on my Note 2 and the speed and battery life of the rom blows the Note 2 stock rom out of the water. You are right, people are just trolling. Based on the S4s specs it is a superior phone.

Thanks guys, I kinda knew the G4 had better graphics, on the battery side, the Note gets her some serious time. I think I made the right choice, seen a few posts where some of the G4 users are selling them off now. wow. Don't remember, but I think this issue came up when the G3 was released also. man, I can not wait till I have that phone.
thanks, much appreciated!!!!

Really, only get the Note if you need the s-pen features and plan to actually, you know, take notes on the thing. Otherwise, go for the newest shiny.

That's exactly what my wife and I discovered. She came from the LG Lollipop to the Note2, and she was ecstatic about this thing, even though she "hated touchscreen phones" (mostly due to her experiences a long time ago with the Motorola Backflip, and the HTC Pure ... I don't blame her). She loves the Note2 because of the huge screen and low DPI (yet the picture is very clear and sharp at 720p) - excellent for texting and navigating around. She has no problems with a touchscreen now! Oh, and the camera is pretty good on the Note2 as well, with a snappy shutter time and extras like slo-mo video and such.
When she saw my S4, she was actually somewhat jealous! We've been comparing the devices side-by-side for a couple weeks now, and we've determined that the S4 is overall a much better phone. The primary exclusion to this statement is that the Note2 has the S-Pen, which is a really, really nice feature - for those who really use it. She uses it rarely to doodle or take some notes when she doesn't feel like dealing with the onscreen keyboard, so it would not be a huge loss for her if it were gone.
The sacrifice of .5in of diagonal screen space is noticeable by comparison, but the 5" screen the S4 has will still outshine nearly any other smartphone - especially at 1080p.
Lastly, I will comment on the covers. We purchased the official Samsung flip cover for her device, primarily because it was too difficult to find a third-party cheap-knockoff that actually included the NFC antenna. They exist now, but they were hard to come by when we were shopping. At least the S4 doesn't include the NFC antenna as part of the battery cover. >_<
I purchased the S-View cover at the nearest corporate AT&T store (30mi away or so in the next town) because I wanted it on Day-One (I had my phone on Day-Negative-One, and I was eager to buy the silly cover). After shelling out $60, I drove home with the shiny S-View cover, and I once again made my wife jealous. While she'll admit that the S-View window is a tad gimmicky, she both finds it "really cool!" and actually kinda useful for every-day use.
So, just as burhanistan stated: if you have a great need for the awesome S-Pen that the Note2 provides, buy it. Otherwise, the S4 certainly competes to be the best phone ever created to-date (IMHO).
She has been reading this thread at work, the pen she said is a plus, I think I got her leaning toward the G4, you guys are helping a bunch. I like the idea of the earlier reply, sell the G4 if she is not happy, get her the note 2 and save some $$$.
Or just keep it, and pass it on to some devs to help out with the rom progress, that would be my contribution to the cause.
This seriously is helping, cause she is seeing it from other people who have the phone and have been using it already.
Thanks

You have a pic or a link to the cover?
I had both but returned my S4 & switched back to my GN2 since I'm changing carriers. At first it was hard to get use to since I was so use to the GN2.
I rarely use the spen but the big screen & not having to charge every night with the GN2 is awesome.
I was getting about 20-22hrs w/ 5-7hrs screen time with my S4.
I do admit being able to use the phone with one hand is cool but typing was a little awkward since I'm so use to typing with 2 hands on my GN2.
Now that I'm back to my GN2, I'm not sure if I want to get the S4 when the 32gb for TMO comes out but knowing my habit of always wanting the latest gadgets, I'll probably do get it. Lol.

This YouTube video shows it in action, but I think it's French or something (dun car, not English). Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8mQOrk2DBg
Here' my experience with the S-View cover:
If you do not have a password/pattern/number lock on your lock screen (simply set to swipe-to-unlock), just opening the S-View cover will turn on and unlock the device. You open it, and it's ready-to-use immediately.
Closing the lid will lock the device for the most part, and for the next 10 seconds or so, it will show the time and notification icons (and battery/signal/etc) through the little window. After 10 seconds, the device shuts off. You can power it back on like this with the power button, but it doesn't unlock it until you open it again.
The window itself appears to be made of glass. It's fairly nice - I was half expecting it to be crappy plastic. If it's not glass, it's really nice plastic.
You can answer or decline incoming calls through the glass when it rings with a swipe of a little round icon one way or the other. Pretty neat, but if you have the touch sensitivity all the way down, you might have a slight trouble using this feature. I haven't tried it since the OTA update, so they may have improved that!
You can hang up an existing call in a similar fashion.
The flip cover itself needs some time to "break in". When you first put it on, it will not lay flat onto the glass of your phone without some convincing, or being held in place by your pocket. After enough use, or a day or two, it gets much better. Don't think the cover is defective from this, it's just too tight in the "hinge" at first, but will loosen up with use.
Occasionally, if I have the cover flipped backwards for long periods, it somewhat emulates the same effect as the above point. It will shy away from the screen for a brief while, and then return to normal. I suspect after several more weeks, this will go away entirely at this rate.
One thing that I really do like about this cover: Because it replaces the battery cover of your phone, it adds virtually no bulk to the phone. It is very slightly thicker, and I can tell you that I appreciate it for one reason: The normal battery cover is inset, such that the camera lens sticks out the furthest, and when placing the device on a flat surface, it rests on the edge of the camera lens. On the S-View flip cover, the new back sticks out just a hair past the camera lens, so it no longer rests on the camera anymore. I take a lot of pictures, so I like to keep my camera lens immaculate.
The glass window will get rather dirty, especially if you shove the phone against a greasy head. Not a big deal, just use a microfiber cloth once in a while and some screen cleaner to get it shiny again.
The normal covers have no window, and so when you open it all the way (flipped around backwards), you can't use the rear-facing camera! With the S-View cover, it lines up such that you can use the camera straight through the glass on the cover. A nice touch, really. Because I take a lot of close-up shots and other detailed pictures, I choose not to flip the cover all the way around, because sometimes the window is dirty. So I just flip it downwards or whatnot.
The flip cover, even when purchased through AT&T, does not have AT&T's logo on the back, like the normal battery cover. I like it that way better. Even better: the front shows "Galaxy S4" near the bottom, and makes it a lot easier to show that you have a really, really cool phone.
I hope this all helps if debating whether to drop $60 on the S-View cover or not. Generics are starting to become available, but I don't know anything about the quality, etc.

I didn't mention battery at all, but you bring up a point. The Note2 has excellent battery life, there's no doubt about that. The S4 has "good" battery life in my experience, especially coming from the S2. People are saying that battery life has improved with the OTA update recently, but I haven't had a good chance to test that out. Freezing bloatware has really been a big help to increasing the battery life, regardless.
My S4 easily lasts the day, and can last two days with moderate/intermittent usage. I think the OTA update may have improved the battery life significantly, but I will have to test this out over the next couple days. Also, keeping it on Wi-Fi where available seems to be the best way to conserve battery life in my area.
Went from the note 2 to s4 pre update, ui fluidity was the only issue. I addressed it with nova launcher and the options in the developers setting, which made the ui very fast. Update addresses that issue and everything else on the s4 is better and my battery life is very comparable. I get 20+ hours with 4+ hours of screen time easily and I'm sure it will increase with roms and kernels.

Thanks, I needed this one....
I had the Note 2 for a week before I traded it for the S4. They are both awesome devices, but imo the S4 was the right choice for me. Much easier to carry it in your pocket. Battery life not as good, but that was expected. Cant go wrong either way. Go to the store and play with them both.

She made a wise choice, I have a Note 2 and would gladly trade it for a S4. I don't even use my Spen, I got it last September because it had the best guts and it's a Samsung. Never buy a HTC. PITA software and very unforgiving. Buy Sammy, Odin is your friend. Enjoy your S4's!

Exchange Edge+ for Note 5?

Hey guys... I've had my gold platinum Edge+ for AT&T since Wednesday and I do like the phone. It looks stunning. But for some reason I'm considering going out today and exchanging it for the Note 5.
The Edge screen is cool but I'm already finding myself not using it a ton. I'm starting to wonder if I will get more use and value out of the S-Pen. Plus the Note 5 is cheaper.
Any opinions? Reasons why I should keep it? Any reasons why I should exchange it?
Thanks!
No reason to keep it if you're already doubting your choice a few days into getting a brand new phone. You'll probably be happier long-term if you switch to the Note 5 while you still can.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
To be honest, I don't expect to use the edge function a ton. But I love the feel of it in my hand and my pocket.
Best is the app that let's you launch your favorite app on the edge screen when your screen is off. Totally worth the Edge for this function alone.

I wouldn't say the Note is better, it just has s-pen functionality. I never used the s-pen on my Note devices so the switch to the Edge+ has been awesome for me! The looks alone make it worth it for me lol.
Just as an update, I did try the Note 5 for a day and I got my Edge+ back. Before this, I had a regular S6. The Note simply felt like a larger version of that with the pen. I never use the pen so this phone is my keeper!
Thanks for the input guys.

I didn't try the note 5, (i was sort of disappointed with it over the note 4) but I think you made the right choice. Especially if you don't see yourself using the s-pen. I actually miss the pen, (last 2 phones where notes) but in love this phone. Glad I went with something different.
I don't find myself using the edge all that much, although that would be different if notifications could pop up on edge by themselves (no swipe), but it's snappy, screen is amazing, and it is the perfect size and feel for my hands.

Well guys, I doubt you care, but I will update you anyways lol.
Tomorrow morning I am returning my Edge+ for the Note 5. For good this time lol. For various reasons, with the biggest being that Costco is offering a $150 gift card and wireless charger if you buy an Edge+ or Note 5 from them.
With that being said, they don't carry the gold Edge+. To be honest, that was the biggest reason I kept the Edge+ over the Note 5...the gold color. Now that my choices are both in black, I think the Note 5 will suit me better in the long run.
To be honest, the novelty of the slightly curved screen and gold color has already almost worn off for me. And I never use the Edge functions already. I know I will use the pen more than these functions.
Another reason is I went to Best Buy tonight to play with the Note 5 again. The screen looks a bit better and brighter to me when I put it side by side with my Edge+. I thought it was in my head at first but it definitely wasn't when I tried various things.
Anyhow, enough rambling. I might check in here every now and again. And I just want to say that this is a fantastic phone! Enjoy it guys and see you around.

I'm thinking of doing the same.. it's a hard decision tho =/. If only they had the Note 5 in gold. This is the first gold phone I've actually liked. I just can't get used to the curved screen for some reason.
I've had many of the note series of phones just for the screen size and never used the pen. In everyday usage the edge is more noticeable and functional on a daily basis, and just looks much nicer to me. I wouldn't trade the edge plus in for anything now haha
Agreed, I had the last 4 Notes and never used the Pen. I just wanted the best phablet that have also software features. Now I use S6 Edge and even though it's very ok in size, I am still a fan of big screens. So the logical upgrade is S6 Edge+ which I'll buy in 1-2 weeks.

I'm not saying this to try and sway you, but I have no regrets about my choice. The Note 5 is simply more functional for me (I like some of the new pen features) and it's easier to handle with less glare on the screen.
I can say that both phones are great, no doubt about it. The Note 5 just fits me better personally.
Good luck with your choice!
i have the old galaxy s6 edge minus, the edge screen doesnt do much ! it' a waste of extra money.
atleast on NoteEdge, you can display Main and Edge screen, 2 independent screen on the screen at the same time !
i have a family plan with 3 lines, so i upgraded to Note5.
there is no Gold note5, but you can slap a gold case on it !
take a look ! S E X Y ! haha

I had the s6 edge+ indeed it's a beautiful phone but the curved screen got me returned for note 5
Galaxy s6 edge+ plus is the best phone. And most handsome good looking beautiful phone in the world.
Anyway good luck with your note 5 I hope you enjoy it.

Note 5 or S7 Edge?

Hey guys! I am new to Samsung coming from the LG G4.
Verizon is sending a warranty replacement Note 5 64gb but I was hell bent on the S7 Edge so I bought the S7 Edge full price thinking I can sell the Note 5 to recoup my money.
Before I left I figured I'd at least look at the Note 5 and actually impressed. The Edge apps are already wearing as unneeded. I only had the S7E for a few hours. The Edge also seems to take away from some screen space.
If I returned the Edge for the Note 5, would I really be missing anything? I think the SPEN would probably be more handy than the quick side widget.
Thoughts? I don't want to open the Note 5 unless I plan to keep it so I can't do a direct comparison.
The Samsung S7 Edge is my first Android based phone. I have been using IPhone since it's first release. Although I can't give a comparison based on the Note 5 as I have never used it, I can say that the Samsung s7 edge is the most amazing phone I have ever used in my life. This is coming from someone who just 1 week before laying hands on the phone swore he will never leave iPhone.
I should add that the s7 edge is water resistant, so you might want to at least take that factor into consideration.

Had the note. Abused it and rooted it, roms and everything. Jere are my views...
S7 edge is easier to hold, bigger battery, seems faster and quick. Camera is better and focusing is amazing. Waterproof but I haven't swam with it yet.
SD card slot is big for me as it has my entire mp3 library and pictures too.
I used the spen mainly for sharing pictures but I hardly used it for drawing stuff.
Up to your preference I guess.

Hi, I had a Note 2 & a Note 3 and barely seemed to use the Spen. I went to a Note because I couldn't live with a small screen any longer. Once the iPhone 6+ came out I immediately headed back to Apple (being an Apple fan girl but always willing to live in iOS or Android world). All that being said, once I even started reading about or talking to friends about the S7 Edge, I knew I wanted it sight unseen. Pre-ordered it & got it 2 days ago. I haven't been able to put it down at all!it is so slick! The screen size is as large as the 6+ but the footprint is so much smaller. Other than the SPEN, what draws you specifically to the Note 5 that the S7 Edge couldn't provide? I'm even using a 200gb SanDisk microSD card. Much better than paying for a 128gb iPhone again.

Wife has had the Note5 for several months, I just got the S7 Edge.
I almost got the Note 5 - reasons swayed to S7E:
- SD card - I need more space than the Note 5 provides, keep a bunch of photos, movies, etc., on my phone. I have a Samsung Pro+ 128GB SD card in the S7E.
- Can hold/use in one hand - I use my phone a lot w/one hand and the Note 5 is just too big to do that comfortably.
Those are the only reasons I didn't get a Note 5 for myself. I think it's one of the best phones I've used...fast, great camera, beautiful screen, SPen is actually useful, excellent battery life. It's a really nice device.
The older Notes were big but AFTER buying the S7E and looking at the Note 5, it literally is the same size as my G4 was width wise, but 5.7"
The Note they are sending me is 64gb. I normally carry a tablet for movies but 64gb will do me plenty fine. Memory isn't an issue for me.
I don't have a case yet since I still trying to decide what to keep but the S7E is slick. It is kind of hard to hold and my palms keep tapping buttons on the beveled edges.
Overall I really like it though. It seems much smoother than my G4.

Why the V20 vs the pixel?

Hi
Besides the price and the screen size, how is the V20 better?
Thank you for the help. I am trying to figure out what to replace my note 7 with.

SD card and a removable battery. After the Note 7, I don't want a phone that I can't take the battery out.

For me is better in the following ways:
Second screen, removable battery, looks better, sdcard, the camera specs look better to me, better audio, full AT&T support (AT&T tends to not fully support features like VoLTE on non branded devices).
Downside: probably locked bootloader, potentially limited development support, and each version has a subset of all the possible LTE bands.
Almost 300 Dollars cheaper if you trade in your old 4G phone. Has some unique hardware features that the pixel doesn't have (2nd screen, dual camera, replaceable battery). Potential downside of V20: Slow with software updates and battery life. I decided today to cancel my Pixel XL order. To spent 1000 bucks for a phone that has no hardware wow factor didn't sit well with me. The Google software gimmicks on the pixel like assistant don't interest me and they are anyway 1st gen.Pixel owners are beta testers. Maybe next years Pixel 2nd gen will be nice.
The Silver phone is Silver on both sides, not Silver on the back and Girly White on the front.
I was debating between the two. My biggest gripe on the v20 is the screen. Not a bad screen, but LG calibration is usually bad and way too cold. Also no VR on the lg.

The worst is the blue pixel. Looks good from the back and then you turn it around and it is white. UGLY!
I hate the button placement on the Pixel. Similar to the one on the 6P. While holding the phone I constantly press the volume button. In a car holder the phone cannot be positioned in the middle because the holder presses than either the on/off button or the volume button down.

Very true, I'm hitting my 6p a lot! But otherwise the Nexus6p is awesome!

For every cons you find on the LG V20, you get 2 or more pros. By the way. Someone already unlocked the bootloader for the Tmobile model! (I GOT TO LOVE TMOBILE LOL! IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN SO NICE). Smells like some rooting is about to be cooked up!... anyway, lets keep up with the listing, LG V20 is : Better looking, high quality built, shockproof, removable battery, Expandable SD CArd up to 2000TBS!, more megapixels in the rear camera, INFRAREEEED (an odd yet very effective feature to find in a phone nowadays), and the uniform color. and several other great features that you wouldnt find on google pixel /xl
^^what they said! and has wide angle camera feature! and already has a lot of activity on XDA! Cool

YESSS you said it!
My main consideration in going with the v20 over the pixel was this is google's first phone. I think that alone increases the chances for problems. Plus, where I'm at, there's no actual physicall store selling the pixel. I'm more comfortable being able to go to a store and talk to someone if I have a problem and need replacement.

Facts which can be chosen based upon preference.
I preordered the V20 based on these items below.
- Availability, the XL is out of stock for how long no one knows.
- MicroSD support
- Removable battery (Not a must for me)
- Audio experience.
- Camera has a lot of features, but quality could be a 50/50?
Thats basically it. Everything else would be preference honestly.
The PIXEL XL is just a bad ass phone.

wait. did i answered your question right?
i just don't the looks of the pixel. the design looks like every other generic phone that has come out over the last few years. i got the v20 for all the same reason others have already mentioned. i love the phone so far. even way better than my recalled note 7 which i hated so much. glad they got recalled.

Upgrading from Note 4 to V20

After a few serious issues occurring with my Note 4, i just finished a claim with Assurion and after some back and forth, they offered me the V20 at my request. They couldnt guarantee that it would be brand new or refurbished but it still came with a 1 year warranty.
Im surprised that Assurion stepped up and gave me the phone i wanted. Friggin AT&T just wanted to sell me a new Next 24 or 30 month plan for more than i was paying a month for my note 4. So for $112 deductible Assurion is sending me the V20 and ill continue paying off my old Next 28 plan for the remaining 10 months.
Dam note 4 kept shutting off at 35% battery level ever since the Marshmallow update, screen burn in from extended GPS use, GPS not getting a fix intermittently and the screen separating from one side of the phone (looks heat related to me, as the phone would get pretty dam hot when sitting in the cradle on my dash).
Had the phone for a little over a year and all was fine until the Marshmallow update, then within the last month or so, i noticed these other issues.
Im hoping that i wont miss the S pen much. Only used it to write on pictures once in a great while and hopefully a wireless charging cover will become available.
Any other Note 4 users who made the switch, happy with your V20?
I had a note 4 before my s7 and now have a v20 and honestly the v20 is awesome. much better than both. much faster. no touchwiz lag which idc what people say, is very present on the Verizon s7. either way, it's a really fast phone with a great camera. you'll like it.

Thanks i was reading another thread where someone was complaining about using it in landscape mode while driving and having part of the screen cut off. Have you seen this and are you able to see the dialer when using the phone in landscape mode?
I still have my rooted and tmobile activated n4 and runs strong.
I got v20 and can't live without root. Rooted yesterday, got few apps and runs really fast. Still havent activated yet.
I wish we have good debloaded deodex ROM and working xposed.
It's a tottaly different phone than n4. I have to used to power button at the back. Also one thing buther me I can use kodi in multiwindow view (kodi on the top and browser at the buttom) to fully utilize my screen. Other than that is awesome phone.
Sorry for my EN.
I switched from the Note 4 to the V20. I really really like the V20. The second screen is my favorite thing.
The LCD is fine except the backlight night time use slightly annoys me. However if I am in a room with some external light then the LCD backlight isn't noticeable.

I made a GPS fix in the galaxy note 4 thread. The pins arent making good contact anymore or are oxidized too much. I'm keeping the note 4 for s pen and the camera, when handy. Prefer note4 pics in auto mode for micro detail at work.
I had a Note Edge which I loved. I especially liked the rounded Edge display with lots of apps and notifications on it. Also liked jotting notes with the stylus. I had the Note 7 briefly and didn't like the aspect ratio of it. Felt too tall and skinny to me. I'm very happy with the V20. The 2nd screen on top pretty much does what the rounded Edge display did. The only thing I miss from the Note Edge is the stylus.
I switched from the Note 7. Actually I like the V20 better than the Note 7. Hard to believe but true. It's an awesome phone that will do everything a Note will and more
