Skype Test results - Fire General

be aware I only done one test here's the results
installed fine
logged into Skype fine
called fine
party I called could hear me
I could not hear them
and yes volume was all the way up
I'll test again once my nephew wakes up
Ricci

ok the results are in
nephew said he could hear me fine. (so microphone is good)
speaker (adequate for the task)
note 1:
with the screen turned and the back speaker to my ear.. I could hear him just fine
(note I'm slightly hard of hearing)
but with the back speaker to my ear like I'm holding a phone, I could hear him fine.
Note 2:
not sure why .. but the phone used 4% (96% from 100%) battery
to make a 15 min call
I thought I was at 100% battery. I will test this again at a later date
to see if it really did use 4%
this was NOT a video call
challenge to anyone wanting to use the Fire Tab as a phone and can do the
following... I could not do
1) Video chat with someone and note the amount of battery it uses (5-10 min call should be fine for a battery % test)
2) test with headphones (mine would not work but they are OLD so i could not test this)
but see if you can hear better with headphones..
2b) see if headphone mic will work, not holding my breath on this one, as I don't think it WILL work.
3) test with Bluetooth (test both speaker and mic on a bluetooth headset) i don't have anything bluetooth
4) test a Bluetooth speaker
Peace
Ricci

i bought a Bluetooth headset both the sound and microphone work
i also bought a bluetooth speaker
the speaker plays songs just fine but does not seem to work with Skype
but i maybe doing something wrong not sure yet

peace

No problem, I was just curious.
The Amazon help ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201540210 ) includes the statement: "Note: Bluetooth microphones, microphone-enabled headsets, and low energy devices are not supported." Hmm...

I presume this was with FIre OS. Since bluetooth isn't working on CM12 yet.

Hi, did you ever fix this problem? I have the same issue.. I also tried Google hangouts with no luck. They can hear me buy I can barely hear them. Volume us too low even though I have the volume top the max.

Skype Volume setting
Had the same problem of not being able to hear other people in Skype although they could hear me no problem. (NB this was also the case for Whatsapp)
Turns out there is another volume setting that is not normally accessible from settings etc.
I seem to recall I accessed it by using the Echo Sound test on Skype and from there went into Skype's settings and found the volume button was set to virtually zero. It seemed to be completely independent to the normal volume control for the tablet. Once I adjusted that I no longer had this problem and it resolved my Whatsapp sound problem too.
Don't have access to my tablet at the moment but if you have difficulties finding the volume control let me know and I'll post back more details..

Would definitely be handy only seen that menu on pc not on tablet.

If I remember correctly, the volume setting is in the Skype Menu (3 dots on the bottom right of the screen) and then Settings.
I'll confirm when I can get access to my tablet.

I just looked for it and couldn't find it. At least not in the tablet. What Skype version do you have? Do you mind uploading a screenshot of this setting? Thank you!

Sorry to take so long to get back to you - had to wait for a replacement Fire and have only just got it up and running today.
I've just reinstalled Skype v6.15.0.1162 from google play. I had to use the Echo / Sound Test Service which appears in your contacts. You have to send a contact request and then try and call. It will then come back saying it's a test and will ask you to record your voice. During this, you can use your volume button to increase the sound. Give that a try. I tested it by calling a friend and the sound worked perfectly. Have a go to see if it works for you.
Hope that helps.

[PROJECT] Headphone Controls - HandsFree

I would like to start working on a way to change the function of the push button received from the headphones. Mainly for when your driving, but this would also be helpful when you need to work with your hands, but still would like to use your phone!
I would love to make an app, but i have no exp in doing this, so basically this is my REQ for a developer to work with to create, develop, test help build my idea.
A customizable app that allows you to choose to open apps, perform actions, play music, skip, pause, play etc with different clicks of the button (Like the older/newish ipod shuffle controls)
If your interested or have any material or ideas for me to start looking into gpio settings please add to the post.
My ideal click config would be:
[Current]
1 click - Depending on Phone State : Open up Music Player/play/pause/answer call/end call
[Additional - Needs to be added]
2 clicks - Next Song
3 clicks - previous song
Click and Hold - Open Voice Control Program (in my case Vlingo) Should be configurable via GUI or config file
(I'm not sure how many commands we can actually store, but if there are more then we can surely add more and more features)

If you don't notice the difference, well, good for you .
but with the same kind of money you can get so much more quality you can't even compare.

Fingers crossed that this is on topic enough...
On my Captivate, the hardwired headset that came with it has a button in the wire. This button doesn't seem to do anything. What is it supposed to do?
Also, I have a bluetooth Jabra BT3030. None of the buttons function with the Captivate. They all worked fine on my Tilt (WM). Should all of the bluetooth buttons work with this phone? Also, when I turn on my bluetooth it pairs fine, but doesn't automatically connect. I've read about this happening with other people. I'm wondering if it's just this old bluetooth device isn't compatible with the Captivate. Any opinions?
Thanks,
Rich

The button you speak of will pause and un-pause music from my experience. I'm not sure if it does anything else.
It also answers incoming calls and in at least one music player (can't remember which one, maybe DoubleTwist?) a double click skips to the next track.

You obviously haven't tried out the s9_HD pair. They are really good quality. I have a $50 pair of Sony buds, and the S9s are just as good.
BTW you can get them for $60 on the net. So where did you say you can get better quality buds for far cheaper?
Also I mostly use my S9s' at the gym, because my wired pair of buds kept getting caught on the weight bars. When I run on the treadmill I always set my phone on the top tray and kept yanking on the cord. I actually knocked my phone on the floor a couple of times.

Yeah, my buttons doesn't do anything with any music player I've tried. I don't use the stock captivate player, I prefer pretty much any other music player over it. Right now, I'm using the one I pulled for the vanilla rom awhile back.
In Slacker radio the button pauses and unpauses. I think this is going to be more of an issue of the software developer using the functionality of the button, not making the button talk with the software.

Through more investigation it seems that the software determines what happens on button press, so really this is going to be a look through to see where it allows us to select which program launches on button press.

Help With My New Galaxy S

Just got my SGS and am very happy with it but there is a few little things that have been bugging me.
1.) Call volume, its very low when your in the car or in a public place such as a lunch room or mall. I have it on max and it still very low, is there any way to increase the call volume?
2.) Is the anyway to change the home screen button? like what happens when you press/hold the button. I would like it that when i hold the home button it launches the music player instead of task manager.
3.) Battery life, this is a know issue i want to know what you guys do to make your phone last more then 12 hours. I been testing it and if i turn everything off like data and gps then it will last 2 days but then the phone is useless. I have it set to auto brightness and all that and did the battery calibration and all that. Turning data on and off is annoying and never had the issue with my BB. How long dose you phone last and how can you make it last longer?
4.) Wired headsets, this one is very annoying. I was surprised when i plugged in my brothers iphone headset and it did not work. I tried a few headsets at Bestbuy like the rocketfish headset and the skull candy mic'd, generic blackberry ones and none work. The samsung headsets will not last forever and there are so many choices out there and none work!!!! what heads will work that will be easy to find at bestbuy. I read that nokia ones will work but thats annoying i really like my skull candy mic'd headphones.
4b) is there a way you can use regular headphones to hear when making a call and use the mic on the phone.
bump bump bump

re: battery charge and discharge full for a few times and it will improve..
also if you set wifi to turn off when sleeping and turn of 3g at night (but leave wifi on) you will get better batter.. (i use switch pro widget to do this)
usually get about 36 hours or more.
re headphones use a adapter such as nokia or samsung avail. on ebay an then you can in (froyo 2.2.1 control using buttons) and all firmware calls over the headphones work.
such as these
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250669116158&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
call volume: mine is pretty loud.. maybe get a louder .mp3..
also you can try to turn up speaker vol. with audioboost app from maket (need to be rooted) but for most firmwares speaker is already on max but not all.
test your device with supply
maybe there is problem with your device

Those samsung adapter with mic, i had them with my Omina II and found they make the sound horrible and when listening to music. Do you have it and find there is no issue on the SGS and music still sounds good?.
Regarding call volume, not the volume of the ringer but the volume of the ear peace(in call cvolume), like the person im talking to there voice is very low even on max in call volume

Headphones with the mic addon doesn't work properly due to the fact the Galaxy S has TV Out (try holding down the mic button, it'll sound good). The Galaxy S comes with a pair of earphones which work alright. Apart from that, any 3.5 earphone/headphone will work properly if they don't have that mic bit attached.
Make sure you're updated to the latest firmware. Battery life has improved. Either check on Kies or head towards the custom rom section.
well the whole point is a wired headset with mic other then the samsung ones. They are not going to last forever and i don't want to resort to ebay to get a pair. I would like to go and buy a pair of skullcandy mic'd and use those but since they are wired differently i can't and there are no samsung/nokia at my local best buy which is annoying. why sell a device when you don't have its accessories or why not wire it like all the modern devices like HTC, Blackberry and iphone.
I know i can use regular headphones and they work fine but another annoying issue is you cant use them when a call comes in. With my blackberry i always used regular headphones and when i call came i would take out the BB to use the mic but could hear through the headphones. I don't have a problem doing it this way as this is my preferred way but it just dose not work. I mean is a small BB can do it and an iphone can i was surprised that the SGS cannot.

There are 3rd party adapters you can use. Nokia Ad-54 works just fine (media or call controls dont work, but the mic and headphone works). There are few more, search the accessories forum.
To help your battery life problem, download the app superpower from the market. It automatically manages gps and data etc and turns it on only when it is needed.

[Q] Mic volume

I am having issues with the mic on the iconia. Volume is pretty low. While using gtalk the other side can barely hear me. Has anyone else been experiencing this?
Same here. Testing Fring and using the built-in mic or a headset mic, it is impossible to hear what I am saying. There is no mic adjustment in the Fring app and I can't find one in the tablet settings? Am I missing something that should be very obvious? How do you adjust microphone senstivity?
same problem with gtalk. It's sometime hard to hear what I say
I ve been having the same issues with gtalk. Havent tried any other voip app yet.
Mic works fine in voice recording apps though, so it can't be hardware related.
Maybe honeycomb issue??
Where are the mics?
i think the mic is atthe top of the screen in the crack dead center .click the vol up and click on the/pop up the middle i think is the mic volume .if/im/wrong sorry
I have the same problem on my galaxy tab 10.1 but mic volume seems low on all apps.
Just got the a500 and have experience similar results, mic volume is extremely low.
I have tried it with various voice apps, including gtalk, voice recorder, camcorder, etc, and the voice is really low.
Im begining to wonder that this is a hardware issue.
Is this issue consistent with all a500s? or only some models?
My mic is so low volume as to be virtrually useless. I tried plugging in an external mic and that was slightly better but not enough.
When using the voice recorder app I notice that the meter hardly moves off the stop, something wrong here.
I wonder if this issue is more common than it should be?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1162054
But some people here have said their mic is fine. I am going to check a few out in the shops and see if they are any better. Really, at the moment it's not suitable for skype or google talk which is what I got it for.
I still think its a honeycomb noise canceling issue. Plug In headphones while u record and u will see the difference.
I bought a second A500 yesterday and the microphone records my voice far better than the unit I've had for almost 2 weeks. With the old unit I can barely hear what I speak, but the new one I can hear myself clearly. Manufacturing date of the old one is may, the new one is manufactured in april. It did not get the 3.1 update yet so it's still running stock 3.01. One other thing I like about the new one I just got is that the volume buttons work a bit easier and don't require as much force to push them down.

That's the key right there.
It's a software problem not a material one.
I experienced the exact same thing as you.
Bought a new tablet and tested the mic with stock 3.0.1. The volume was fine.
Updated to 3.1 and the volume was very low.
Well, my mic sucks in a big way. I tried many times to use google talk, tango and so on with horrible results. I have to yell like crazy and they can barely hear me.
So... as a lot of ppl are complaiing and it's a software problem, is it possible they do nothing to solve it????? It shouldn't be that difficult...

I opened up my acer and moved the microphone to the front because before when recordingi couldnt catch a sound coming from recording eg. a person talking.
Now I can at least hear the voices of the people im filming.
For gtalk and skype and stuff i use a headphone set with a mic via the headphones jack, much nicer.
Cheers!

You don't say things like these and not tell us the how's and the what's. For example, what headset did you use? How did you move the mic to front?
BTW, I'm on 3.1 and have never had an issue with the mic. Just did a recording while I was driving and talking. Still sounds pretty good to me.

There is actually a thread further back if you bother to look that I opened and described everything and also uploaded a video to see the mic improvement.
Edit: Here is my thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1169050
Edit: Headset I used is a brand called EXIBEL Art.no 38-4061, cheap and works PERFECTLY I can hear and be heard as if in the room.
same issues. Sound seems to just stop as well after I use camcorder
Mine works well on any app except gtalk. Although I recently installed voodoo on my rooted Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the mic adjustments helped. Without Voodoo I usually just plug in headphones when I use gtalk and that solves the issue 100%.

Call's people whilst an AUX jack is in.

I've checked high and low on the forums for something similar or a solution to my problem, but alas I can't find anything so I'm starting a thread.
As the title state's my phone rings people whenever an AUX jack is in, listening to music, or hooked up to a stereo. I've tried restoring to factory setting's also I've tried different headphones and stereo's but still no joy.
T-Mobile
HTC HD Desire HD.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Many thanks.
Flynn.
Hmm, maybe I've got a similar probelm, I use normal 3.5mm in-ear headphones with my Desire HD and they are able to make strange things, if I gently move the jack, sometimes my phones starts a call to the latest called person, sometimes it skips to the next song, sometimes the music is paused.
I think that has something to to with the default headset funcionality, but it would be great if there was a way to lock any function other than playing music if no multi-functional headset is plugged in.
You're going to think I'm nuts but I've tried everything.
It seems to go berserk when you do a screwing motion with the 3.5mm jack. It doesn't make any difference what headphones I use whether they've got any calling buttons on them or not they just go absolutely mental.
I will admit to doing the calling bug that increases the music volume when you hang up straight after making the call.
But I still can't get around it and it's VERY frustrating, especially in the car.
The same problem
Hey, i have the same problem. This morning i was listening to music on my way to school. And all of the sudden it went berserk, started calling, skipping. What to do?
That happens if the AUX wire passes a current (many times stray) back to the phone. The phone just reacts in the way it would if a button was pressed on one of those headphones having an in-line mic/button.
A lot of times this stray current comes because of static build-up. I'm sure you guys know how to get rid of that. If it's not because of static, it might be because of faulty wiring on the audio enhancement (not usually the case), or if the audio enhancement and the phone function at hugely different potential differences (also, usually not the case).
As far as mine is concerned, freeing it of static usually helps.
One way to quickly judge if it's static that's the problem is if the call/skip/whatever usually takes place the minute you plug it in.

Search for an app on the market called "headset blocker"
NO luck
The above post helps,
However im testing the new ICS rom by Lord Clockan and twistedumbrella and there is no compatability for ICS. Wondering is anyone knows what part of the phone controls headset controls so i can mak an app to block it on 4.0?
Its a real pain as i cant play music at all,
random apps start playing music over other apps and music stops in others, skips tracks etc. SO frustrating.
Take out headphones
Blow into the jack hole
Plug back in headphones
Sorted till the next time crap builds up in there.

I have the same problem. And its realy anoyeing me . Cant listen to music at all anymore on my desire HD...
I have that problem for a while now. The blwoing inside technik did work for a while, but doesent anymore.
That headset blocker would be amazing if it would be working on ICS. Im on the LordMod Beta to.
@geinome would be amazing if you could make an app to fix that. But honestly i have no idea were in the sistem that headset control is located. Hope you can find it.
Found a Fix. Hope it helps you guys to.
I found an other App, that did solfe the problem for me eaven on ICS. The App Headset Interceptor is meant to let you choos, which Music App should receve the signal coming from the remote on the headset. But if you dont choose any from the Apps to get the signal, none dose and so none is cousing problems
Would love to post you guys the link to the market, but cant couse i dont have anouth post yet. But im sure i can sind it yourself
I hope this is solving the problem with the unwanted calls to. Couse i never had that problem, i cant test that.
you dont need any apps
you just need a needle to clean up the pocket lint inside the 3.55 jack.
for me it's usually enough to unplug the jack and plug it in again and all works well for the next month or so.

Microphone works under ICS

For the first time. It never worked well here under HC.
They seem to have solved it by not using the noise cancelling mic. So while bg noise is high the signal is no longer garbled. It's now quite useable for recording notes and the like.
I will give skype and CSIp a try later as I always had to hold the tablet almost in my mouth to have others hear me.
Have you tried a Headset with a built in Mic yet? or a bluetooth headset ? those are my trials for tonight.

No, and I've never even tried Skype as the mic pickup was so bad. Let us know what happens.
I did a Skype test call and it seems to be just as bad as before to me.
I tried installing Skype and got a garbled record of my voice that I didn't get on MP3 Recorder or the stock app. It may be a problem of Skype on the A500....awful software BTW ever since MS took it over.
