Getting a Nexus 6p on Fi if I Order Now Will it Cancel my Verizon Number Immediately? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I'm going to be switching to project fi with a nexus 6p, I have my invite, but I have one concern. I'm going to be keeping my phone number when I switch so I'd like to know if I could register my project fi with that phone number and get the nexus pre ordered through fi and keep using my number on verizon till it gets here?

@TheUnladenSwallow
No, it will not. Your Verizon number will not be ported until you receive your 6P, insert the Fi SIM card and go through the activation process.

Awesome, thanks man. Wanted to double check before jumping. Probably should've ordered it sooner though, mine's gonna be pretty late now XD

Best Buy Unlocked Nexus 6

Hey everyone,
I know there was some confusion to this question only because I could not find any straight answers myself. But I can assure you that an unlocked nexus 6 from best buy will activate on Sprints Network without any issues.
Only thing I had to do was go to my local sprint store and ask for a nano Sim card. Took it home and placed it in my nexus 6. Went online to activate phone. Punched in the IMIE number leaving off the last digit and entered in the Sim number. Worked like a charm!

+1 for me also piece of cake getting it activated in store also
there's no confusion actually, everyone knows that all US bought n6 are exactly the same, and that putting a sprint sim in it will make it work on sprint. if you want to, you can put a tmobile or att or Verizon sim in it to make it work on those providers.

Well, if you go to the best buy website. They even say that the phone doesn't work on CDMA phones such as sprint and Verizon. I also found a lot of sites that said the same thing.

Bestbuy never updates their website, it's wrong....
90% of the time, and the sites you're seeing this on are wrong...just wrong, just listen to Google and knowledgeable forum members about how the phone works and no one else

I guess my play store n6 has been lying to me since winter every time its worked on Verizon... Long before Verizon even carried it. Works on every carrier. Granted...vzw put it on the lost stolen blacklist when I was swapping between vzw and a prepaid at&t card at work..but they fixed it.
Technically the best buy website is correct. You can't buy an unlocked nexus 6 from best buy and simply activate it on Verizon like you would a normal Verizon branded phone. However the Nexus 6 itself IS capable of running on a CDMA network and will work on Verizon and Sprint. The trick is that you already needed to have an active line on Verizon, then its just a simple matter of putting the active nano sim into your nexus 6..

The nexus 6 is unlocked, you CAN simply buy it and activate it on Verizon like you would any other Verizon phone, please, look around the forums before telling them wrong info. If I really wanted to i could take my Nexus 6, originally purchased at Bestbuy for "sprint" and go to any carrier I please without having to jump through any hoops. Verizon will activate it and it'll show up as a "non Verizon" nexus 6 on the account or I can just grab any GSM carrier sim and go to town.

The AT&T version is the only one sim locked out of the big 4. Rogers in Canada is locked too, I believe.

Umm, you understand that only Verizon Nexus 6's can activated normally. That's why they sell Verizon "branded" nexus 6's. Again I said the nexus 6 purchased from Besy Buy will work, But walk into a Verizon store with a non Verizon branded phones and you will have to jump thorough some hoops to get it activated. Unless something has changed recently that is.
I went to a best buy to buy one. It said they had it in stock online. I called and got a recording saying check online for stock information. This Best buy is an hour drive, so I waited until I could actually talk to a person at the store. Asked them to verify they had it in stock. The guy says yep we have it.
I drive an hour, stand there for 20 minutes while the guy that told me he has it tries to find it. Apparently he never actually looked. He then proceeds to tell me that they have been having issues with the Nexus 6 stock in their system.
Yep, I was pissed.

There is no "Verizon" nexus 6, just the nexus 6, the only thing Verizon about it is the sim card. It's already been talked about in the Verizon fcc thread made a while back. The nexus 6 is the only special case phone that you don't have to do anything special because Google made it so carriers accept them. Verizon just likes to mess everything up, but obviously the people weren't having it.

I am hoping to get a best-buy nexus 6 and use it on VZW... the only problem is, the drones at the Corporate store tell me they won't activate a nano sim for me on one of their phones. The issue for me is I have a galaxy nexus with a micro sim.... soooooo... does anyone know I can activate it this way:
1) I get a nano to micro adapter and put a new vzw nano sim in it...
2) put the nano+micro adapter in to my GNex....
3) have them activate the sim via my gnex and then take the nano and put it into the n6
Is there anything that would prevent this from working??
Just cut the some down to nano size. Just what u did with my cricket Sim.
When I got my dev edition moto x, I took the nano sim to a vzw store and said I need a sim activated. They asked if I had the phone motioning to take it... I just said I do have a phone, but I don't need any help with it, I simply need the some card activated to my account. They had no problems. Just don't be sketchy or an asshole. You can have just a sim activated.
At least in the past if you have an extra line you can do it over the phone too, you just give them account Info and the code from your new sim and they activate it for you.
Though I guess if you own a nexus 6 and are coming to verizon? I doubt they are sending you to a competitor if you state you have a phone and simply want a sim.

I did the same with my Nexus 6 that I bought out right from the Sprint store is running on MetroPcs like a champ.

What to expect on Verizon?

I've never had an unlocked phone before. I currently have an M8 (nano SIM) active on Verizon. I've read reports from people and their N6 experience. Some say it was simply a matter of moving the sim into the new phone. Others say they went through hell to get it to work. Does Verizon need to get involved? Is it really a case by case basis? Did people who had trouble do something wrong? Any insight appreciated.
I don't think we'll know until someone tries. As you had said, Verizon wouldn't issue SIMs or activate the N6 for the longest time. They have a terrible track record of allowing devices they don't sell on to their network. I'm on Verizon, and will probably go to Fi when it arrives. Cheaper that way anyhow.

I am in the same situation as you, never having had an unlocked phone and on Verizon. Have a Note 4 now and hope I can just walk in and get a SIM from them without problems, don't want to be put in the position of cutting down a micro-sim to a nano-sim size. Seen Youtube vids and yes it looks easy, but if someone can mess it up it is me. Hope they don't give us a hard time.
there was a small period of time where the XPE was having activation issues for new SIMs but existing SIMs worked fine. i anticipate this will remain the same. existing SIMs will work fine.
i do remember some issues with either the '13 X or some other models that were unable to do simultaneous voice/data but was eventually resolved.
I bought a nexus 6 on day 1. I was coming from a note 3 with a micro sim .I did not deal with Verizon at all. I cut my sim to make it a nano. Threw it in my Nexus 6 and the rest is history. Been using it ever since and when i get my 6p im just gonna transfer that sim into the 6p
I've cut down a sim card before. I had the HTC Rezound and when I ordered the Galaxy S4 I didn't want to go through the hassle of getting a Micro Sim from the store. The Rezound had a full size sim. There are sim templates online. Download and print one out. Cut the template EXACTLY and place on your Sim card. Trace in Pencil and then get a quality pair of scissors. Easy as that. They also make Sim card cutters online you can buy really cheap.
you do not even need a template...a good pair of durasheer type scissors and just trim all the plastic around the gold contacts off and you are good to go.

I called up and told them that a friend was giving me a Motorola Nexus 6, but I didn't have the phone yet so I couldn't activate it over the phone, and requested the nano-SIM.
It arrives tomorrow and I plan on putting it in an adapter and into my Rezound and activating it. That way on delivery day, I will just swap the SIM into the new phone. No guarantees, but I read this worked for the X Pure.
This is a really stupid question but I never bought a phone that I couldn't just pop my old sim card into and use right away. Are you saying I need to go buy a nano sim card from verizon and go through the activation process? I want to be able to use my phone straight out of the box so how to a buy a nano SIM so I have it ready to go on delivery day??
I've had unlimited data forever and I bet Verizon will claim new sim card means i'm no longer grandfathered but thats a headache for another day.
I'm ordering a nano sim right now, and putting it in my adapater and into my G3 to activate it then dropping it in my 6P when it gets here
EDIT: Update, I ordered the Nano SIM and they requested the device I would be using... I was slightly apprehensive but wen ahead and told them I'd be switching to the 6P and they were like ok... well.... let's figure out a way to get around this because it's requiring me to list a phone we currently offer. So she figured out a way to work around it and my Nano SIM is on the way! First time in a while i was pleased with the outcome from speaking with customer service lol.

I can say with confidence that we shouldn't have a problem. Here's why:
I ordered a Nexus 6 from Motorola the day it was released. The Problem was,
I was using a HTC One M7 (Micro Sim)...The Nexus 6 is a Nano Sim and Verizon
didn't support the phone. I went into Verizon thinking all they had to do was
activate a Nano Sim and all is well....NOPE! They told me I needed a phone with
the Nano Sim to activate it. Luckily the guy that was helping me ended up being
AWESOME! He found an nonactivated Iphone 5 (Nano Sim) and added to my
account and then just swapped the Nano Sim into my Nexus 6 and LTE
popped up.
So i can 99% ensure that it will work with just a Sim Swap.
Lets cross our fingers for that 1% chance
All you chat people must have gotten lucky I chatted with VZW's customer service, and was told that while they could ship me out a new sim, I would have to CALL them to have it done. I sound like the odd man out here, so I must just gotten the nitwit of the bunch. Anyways, I ended up just ordering a "noosy 3rd gen sim card cutter" (from EBay, as I had an absolute nightmare TWICE with Amazon on this specific product for some reason), and feel like I'll be set to go.
It's literally a paper punch, but for sim cards. While I feel I could trim them with no issue, for ~$10 I felt like the added speed and surity of it all seemed like a no brainer to me

Ya.... I felt like I got pretty lucky.. i expected to be given a lot of crap especially because I just switched to their newer/cheaper data plan and currently have 0 phones that use their silly monthly payment plan to buy a phone.
I spoke with a local Verizon rep in the same building as my work; he told me that I would be unable to activate my Nexus 6P on Verizon; I asked him about activating another phone and swapping that sim to the N6P, to which he responded, "Yeah, as long as they're (the sim card) the same size."
I take take his word with a grain of salt, as he seemed to think that the Nexus 6P was just the PLUS version of the standard Nexus 6; just like Apples iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+

If you have an active Verizon sim card just put it in the 6P. If it's a micro then cut it, it still works. Another trick is if you happen to have a IPhone6 IMEI or any phone that is on the Verizon phone list that is Nano SIM you can use that in lieu to activate your 6P.
My friend just got a moto x pure and he just threw in his nano Sim and it worked right , plus tethering is unlocked since verizon doesn't have their mits on the phone first.

Anyone on AT&T? Have a question about the nano sim...

So my phone arrives today but I have a Note 4 which doesn't have a nano. Will I be able to just walk into an AT&T store to get a sim without the phone or will they want me to have the phone with me?

You can walk into an AT&T store and get one but you'll have to call customer support to get it activated. At least that's how I did it when I got my Z3.
Ah ok. That's fine. I just rather not have to carry around two phones so I can get a sim

I called them to send me an unactivated sim card, which they have done for me before, but they told me they needed an IMEI number in order to ship me out one. So i actually went ahead and printed out a template to cut down my current micro sim so i don't even have to go see them when the phone comes in. Template link below if you're interested.

If you walk into the store with your new phone and old SIM they will replace and activate the SIM right then and there. You might have to wait a bit to be escorted to one of those tables after being greeted at the door, but when you're done, you will walk out with a fully functional phone.
I called AT&T and they overnighted me the nano SIM card. They asked for the IMEI number but had no issues when I told them I had yet to receive the phone so could not provide the information.
Ah ok. Let me try that
Steve, I don't want to carry both phones and / or be without service. Want to just have the card already

Ah I didn't want to do that. why spend money if I can get for free I got a Sim during lunch. I was told that I need a code that will activate the Sim which is sent over sms. I'll have to figure that one out
Ended up using Hangouts Dialer to call over Wifi and got the sim card activated. Worked like a charm.
I did also go to a store but there were at least 4 people ahead of me and I didn't want to wait. I made the right choice

Question regarding 6P on Sprint

Hi there!
I'm a current Sprint customer with the HTC One M7 that I bought from Sprint back in 2013 when it came out. I'm a bit hesitant to buy the Nexus 6P from Google simply because I'm not sure what exactly the "process" of its activation will be. I've never had an unlocked phone before, so the way of getting it activated is quite the mystery for me, especially considering Sprint is a CDMA carrier. I know the device works on all major carriers, including Sprint, but if it isn't coming directly from Sprint, then how do I go about getting it activated to replace my M7?
Thanks - I know it's most likely a quick procedure, but I want it to be as foolproof as possible!
I'm not quite sure if this has been answered before, but I did some searching and I came up empty. Again, I could be wrong, and if this question has been answered before, my apologies!
Contact sprint, ask them to send you a sim card for the 6P. You can then activate it through sprint.com. That's all I did, pretty easy.

When activating your unlocked Nexus 6p on Sprint, can you use WiFi Tethering / Hotspot...or do you have to pay Sprint separately for the service.
Call Sprint and tell them you bought a nexus 6p they will send you a sim card in one day it will be at your door. I ordered mine (free) and it was here the next day. Get sim and phone throw sim card in phone and go online and log in to your account hit swap phone and follow directions. Takes maybe 4 minutes tops and you don't have to speak with anyone super easy!! That's what I did.

Getting Verizon SIM for 6p

I'm getting my 6p on Wednesday, and I was wondering if I walk into the Verizon store with it if they'll give me a sim and activate it? I have a verizon phone now that uses a nano sim, and they told me through chat that I could go pick up one for free at any of the stores for that phone. So should I just wait till I get my 6p and go activate it; or go get one activated on my other phone? Are there any downsides to just swapping the a sim for phone A into phone B as long as they're the same size? I'm pretty sure the answer to the first part is that it doesn't matter now that 6p's are whitelisted, and the second part I'm guessing is no. Just want to make sure. Thanks.

There's no need to even walk in the Verizon store if you already have a nano sim in your old phone. Just pull the sim from your old phone and pop it in your 6p and you will be good to go. If you want to activate a new sim card most likely it will have to be activated on your old phone anyway and the put in your nexus.

That's the problem. I have a Verizon branded phone that takes a nano sim (s6 edge), but it doesn't have a sim in it currently. My sim was accidentally sent back to Verizon inside a bad s6 edge.

so you received a replacement s6? accidentally sent back your SIM in your defective phone? just go into a Verizon store and tell them that. they should give you a new SIM. then put it in your 6P and profit.
Verizon has no problems with the 6p. I just started new service and brought a 6p with me, no problem.
This may be a dumb question but I was going to cut the Sim card that is in my Note 3 and use it in my 6p when it comes in tomorrow. If I decided to keep he Sim in my note and have Verizon give me a new nano Sim for the 6p does that mean the Sim in the note would no longer work?

This may be a dumb question but I was going to cut the Sim card that is in my Note 3 and use it in my 6p when it comes in tomorrow. If I decided to keep he Sim in my note and have Verizon give me a new nano Sim for the 6p does that mean the Sim in the note would no longer work?

I'm pretty sure that would be the case; unless you added another line of service.

so you received a replacement s6? accidentally sent back your SIM in your defective phone? just go into a Verizon store and tell them that. they should give you a new SIM. then put it in your 6P and profit.

Yeah that's how it happened.
I walked right in to Verizon with mine, and they got me a new sim, activated it and played with it for a while. They were all complaining Verizon wasn't carrying the new Nexus line.
Your local Verizon store will give you one but they will want you to bring your 6p into the store so the can associate the sim with the 6p.
