Gps wierd problems... - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys
Bought this used note 3 recently. Some weeks after I bought it I noticed that my GPS was not positioning at all while I was driving, so I searched a lot and found that this model has a lot of gps problems. Since I got the cellphone with lolipop 5.0, I dont know if this issue is software or hardware related.
The wierd part is, using gps test, my device can see 30 satelites but wont use any one of them. I tried to get a fix for one hour and wont get it. I did this in an open space. I opened up my device, straighten the pins, checked the flex, and its everything ok in that department. Flashed stock rom again, flashed a custom rom, and still nothing. flashed back to stock and rebuilt the nv file, nohing... I'm cluess on what can be, since I tried anything. A-GPS is working since I get a positioning when I load google maps. (while using the gps while I drive, I cant get any fix)
I will post a print screen of gps test later since I have to go to work.
PS: Sorry for my bad english
Thanks in advance

gps not working?

got a new phone from tmo today...rooted it, flashed jf1.5, flashed new spl, moved apps and dalvik cache to sd...smooth sailing...redownloaded all my apps from sd and from market, still good...went to google maps and it cant find my location using gps...cellular location still good though...and yes, I did enable gps in the settings...so I reflashed did everything as before and still no go...did I just get a defective G1 or is there something I can fix? Thanks for any help guys!
BTW, my old phone, before it got wet, worked great with all the same settings and same ROM...
GPS can be iffy. Some locations are just prone to bad GPS acquisition. I went to visit my parents last night, real hard to get a fix in their backyard, but eventually it did. Tried at a friend's apartment building, anywhere NEAR it, its impossible to get a fix. Probably something to do with signal reflection. Other times, it'll lock on within a couple of seconds.
Your radio and firmware version are also important. The newer versions seem to lock on to GPS a lot easier. You say that you have jf1.5 -- the latest is 1.51, and can you confirm that you have the latest (official, not the hacked phone killer) radio installed?

I do have jf1.51...and the latest radio...and the latest SPL...my old phone didnt have this problem...I kept all my settings(thank you MYBACKUP PRO) so essentially everything is the same, except for the phone...and the same spots where I used to be able to get a fix with my gps(even indoors) I dont get anything....must be the phone...and if it is...any fixes you guys know about?
just got off the phone with a tmo rep re: my gps issue....I explained to him that I used to be able to get a gps lock on my old phone in seconds indoors and out but not with this replacement phone and he says to me well I have a g1 here with me and Im not able to get a gps lock...I told him that it's probably because he's inside a building with lots of electrical interference and other buildings blocking the reception...i also told him that I was able to use TeleNav with my old phone along with other apps that required gps...and he suggests to me to call TeleNav because it might be a problem with their app...oy...he also suggests to me to go to a tmo store where they have demo phones and we could compare gps signals....oy...I also told him that that I used google maps as a navigation tool before but not anymore since I cant get a gps lock anywhere...and he just tells me to try the tmo store...oy...i might need to unroot this phone and return it to tmo, I guess....

GPS Problems on a new G1

I'm on my third G1. The first one died to some strange graphics issue where the screen would go completely pixilated and wacky on me. I think the graphics processor was overheating. On the second one the touch screen died about the same time the speaker in started buzzing during calls.
Luckly because TMobile extends your warranty 90 days every time you get a new phone, I've only had to pay for shipping. I got the latest one, and immediately installed Cyanogen 4.2.5 on it. No problems. Then I followed Michael Mayhew's instructions for the maps update to get Navigation.
I can't get the GPS to work at all. I've since tried going back to RC29, or the base Cyanogen 4.2.5 without the maps hack. I've tried other GPS applications such as the Chartcross GPSTest. I can't get a read at all on any of them. I don't know if it was working before the updates, because I never tried to use maps before I installed the mod.
So I'm wondering somehow a radio update was applied that broke this phone, or if there is anything I can do to change the gps drivers around. Anyone with similar GPS failure issues?
I don't really want to return this one as I've only had it one day!
Yes, similar issues. No solution thus far. I also did not test GPS before flashing. OOPS?!? And now it no longer works, but I can't tell if that was the case to begin with.
I followed the same procedure (CM 4.2.5, Navigation mod), and had the same result--broken GPS. "My Location" not working, "Searching for GPS" forever, etc.
So two possibilities I can see:
1) hardware problem w/GPS
2) one or a combination of CM 4.2.5 + Nav = broken GPS
I have seen a few people on these boards say their GPS doesn't work all of a sudden. In fact, there are stock Droid owners with issues.
Can anybody chime in?
Hmmm
So for about 10 minutes on Friday it started working again. Totally random, I have no idea why. I was at a party and decided to see if it was working. All of a sudden I had signal (using GPSTest) and google maps found my location.
I've since tried it several times, rebooting, and doing a bunch of other stuff. I can't get it working again. Total fluke! So frustrating!
Well now the new version of google maps is in the market. I've successfully installed that one but still no GPS.
Im having the same issue on my G1 right now. Sorry for the Zombie thread, but did this ever get resolved?
I've had the gps fail on my phone and others I know have also. The g1 seems to have issues with the gps antenna strip breaking internally so one minute you'll have reception, the next.. nothing. Only solution is to find a new antenna strip and replace it (good luck!)
Aside from possible hardware failures, the GPS units on these phones tend to be very weak. Sometimes it *IS* impossible to get a strong enough signal to lock on, even when out in the open if there is something nearby that can reflect the GPS signals.
However note that these are AGPS devices, which means that with a cell connection and a data connection, and given that google knows the coordinates of the cell tower you are connected to, it is able to load assistance data (almanac + accurate time synchronization via NTP), and this will *GREATLY* improve your chances of getting a good lock and greatly reduce the time it takes.

I doubt that it was the GPU overheating. Your phone would burn your hand if it got that hot.
The in-call buzzing could be corrected by shifting the screen a little bit while it is happening. It is related to GSM interference with the speaker. The speaker is literally playing the radio waves emitted by the phone. The touchscreen issue was probably a broken cable... also related to moving the screen.

What radio version are you running?
I've also had no luck getting a GPS signal ever since I installed hacked navigation... I wonder if that's the problem? Has anyone tried removing the hacked navigation, to see if that solves the problem?
BTW, the problem started on CM 4.1 with EBI0 radio (2.22.19.26I), and still persists with CM 5.0.7... Has anyone tried upgrading their radio to 2.22.23.02? How about the folks that have gone back to the Updated Rogers EBI1 Radio (3.22.26.17)?
I have been having the "searching for gps" problem as long as I can remember (although I just got this phone a month or two ago)....I remember trying to install the hacked navigation or something so maybe that messed it up?...this phone was never opened, and I would hate to have to open it up to see if it is a hardware issue because I may not put it back as it was. IDK what to do, I even started a thread about it and tried every solution I could find and nothing worked for me....
I wish someone could chime in here with some insight...but it is also nice to hear others with this issue and their advice/ideas also...
Has anyone tried un-rooting and returning the phone back to complete stock and wiping everything ? has that worked for anyone?

GPS Lock problem

Hi everybody,
I have search a lot about my problem, but I don't find the exact same problem. I tried everything said on this forum and can't get trought my problem.
I had a Samsung Galaxy S4 and upgraded three days ago to a brand new Note 3. Everything is going fine exccept for GPS.
Here's my phone informations:
MODEL: SM-N900W8
CARRIER: Rogers (Canada)
Android version 4.3
BaseBand version N900w8VLUBMJ4
Version JSS15J.N900W8VLUBMJ4
The problem is: When I get into Google maps, i'll get a location (It is an approximation using Cell towers I think) When getting into Navigation, The FIRST location is ok (with an error margin but still, it's ok) but it never update position (The application seems to freeze but it doesn't). After searching a lot I installed applications like GPS Test and GPS Status to find out that I never get a GPS lock. After two or three minutes I get 1 or 2 satellites but never get more so it cannot lock. I often lost the 2 satellites I was getting after a few more minutes.
I got a lock once, I was inside my house, had 7 satellites but lost it after a few minutes again.
I did a Factory Reset, I did clear cache and dalvik cache several time, uninstalled Google Maps, tried the GPSFix.zip files as discussed here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2612757). Tried to clear AGPS and redownload, recalibrated compass, ... i think I tried everything I found but nothing help.
Please note that tests have been made on the road, with a clear view to the sky (No buildings, nothing in the way from the phone to the satellites. I also have experiences in rooting, flasshing ROM, playing with system files, so it should not be a lack of knowlege
My phone is rooted but i don't want to flash any ROM because I still have Knox flag to 0x0 and want to keep it (For a warranty purpose!)
If anyone can help on this, it would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Jonathan

Use that warranty... You should be able to use the GPS and the fact it doesn't get satellite lock is a problem...

I did drop the phone ONE time and the glass break. I think there will be no way to get warranty until I repair it.
I've been having this issue since upgrading to KitKat on Note3 (Snapdragon) International Version.
I found an app today and fixed it.
App is TopNTP and you can find it in Playstore.
You need to have Root, of course.
Before it would take forever to lock the signal, and most of the time it wouldn't at all.
Now it takes from 5-10 seconds.
I'm on Stock ROM.
Try fastergps.........https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.fastergps&hl=en_GB
GMaps needs a data connection so could end up costing you a fortune.
Try navfree maybe?
once it has downloaded your specified map,use wifi,it only uses GPS after that.

try solution 1 from that post
Thanks for your answers, I solved the problem when repairing my screen. I think the antenna cable wasn't well inserted and by disassembling and reassimbling the phone, everything is perfect now.
I have X-Note rom, without breaking knox flag. Everything is good since that!
Thx

[Q] GPS is broken. Need help / advice

So, I've never had this type of situation happen before. I flashed Cloudy Stock version 2.1 Rom. It worked great. Then I tried navigation. Noticed there was no GPS. I downloaded a couple different apps / tools. It looks like the GPS function is working just not getting a fix. Then I flashed Cyanogenmod 11 thinking maybe it was a bug. Butttt.... It wasn't. Can anyone think of a setting, bug, or otherwise that would cause this to happen? I think I've done all the obvious stuff location settings etc...? I've never seen a situation where it just didn't work. It was working on stock and also other roms.
Same here. After i updated to kitkat 4.4.2 (first 20A, now 20D) gps stopped working. Cannot connect to any gps sattelites, only it sees them, but cannot connect. Help
So, you're not going to believe this.. I reflashed Cyanogenmod 11 and still had some gps issues. But it was spotty at the least it was still there. I put the cloudy stock back on the phone and had no GPS or rotation at all ( I am pretty sure that has something to do with the radio I flashed for AOSP for the rotation fix. Not such a big deal since I honestly like AOSP.)
Flashed back to Cyanogenmod.... So get this... I took off this nifty new aluminum bumper I recently purchased see >>>>http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HAJ76F6
So I've attached a couple screen shots of the differences with and without the bumper... WOW... Didn't see that coming. So, problem solved for now. I will hopefully be able to return the case. The issue with the stock lack of gps is probably due to the radio. I will deal with that later. I just need to find the right stock radio for the D801 to fix the rotation and the gps. Thanks for listening guys! Good times... :good:

[Q] Cyanogen 11, M8, GPS down

Hi everyone,
Sorry to bother with that, but i have an issue with my Galaxy Note 3 LTE, Cyanogen 11 M8.
Fresh install, everything wiped.
It seems that the GPS is fully down... GPS Status is unable to see or lock anything, Navigation freeze etc....
Maps is able to find my position, but only with network enabled.... if i disabled it... it is lost
In GPS Status, app stay "looking for GPS localization", and when a start an app that need the gps, the Gps Status appears a few second, with an "X".
I neved had this kind of issue, and i didn't find any clues over Internet (but i've seen people with the same issue)
I'm almost sure it was working in M7... i didn't use the gps since i upgrade the phone.
So, has anyone an idea about my problem ?
Many thanks
I had the same issue with the same configuration...
For me, it had to do with the 3G phone tower which appears not to be updated to certain parameters...
This happened when I was in a tiny village of the South West of the UK...
I then try the GPS in other cities, 50 miles away, and everything went back to normal...
I live in London, and travel abroad monthly; and no issues there also...
I would suggest to try your GPS in an other area...

Thanks,
I also live in a small city in France, i hope your solution will also work for me !
I will try tomorrow, in a "bigger city"
Unfortunately... i took my car and drive to be closer of a big city... no success.
It seams that the GPS is down... 'cause i launch some apps that give the signal received by the phone... and it appears that received absolutly nothing. (0, nada, the void)
I've tried to revert to M7 : no GPS at all.
Tried some gps.conf found on the forum : nothing.
It start to scare me, i hope the GPS is not "broken" (could i have killed the GPS antenna ?)
Anyway, i'm still looking for any clues or a way to check the GPS log.
Thanks

GPS connect has NOTHING to do with the SIZE of the city the only factor SHOULD be view of clear SKY.
I was going to say that GPS only works when you're outdoors. Trying to get a signal wont work when in your home etc
For info :
My GPS problem seems to be related to Android 4.4.4.
There's many people complaining that the GPS became innacurate or simply unavailable with this version.
And, it seems that the Cyanogen team has issues making the GPS work for Cyanogen 11 M9 (it's on the wiki).
Currently, there's no fix available. (for some people, rewrinting all APN worked, even if it's not related to GPS, etc etc etc... there's many solution available, but not working for everyone.)
Same issue here, prognosis for it should be posted here, Thx.
Hi Everyone,
If there's people following this thread, i'm still looking for a solution...
Here's all the thing i've tried, without success :
- Reinstall / change Modem
- Back to stock rom (GPS still not working)
- Format /system and reinstall
- Re-Partition
- NV Rebuild
Each time, it's the same thing : i start GPS Status, and i get the icon with the cross, and nothing happen.

Sometimes with Odin, sometimes with Clockwork... don't remember exactly
Each time, i was never able to get a GPS signal.
If you ODIN'd back to stock and GPS is still down on stock ROM, then you probably have a hardware issue. There is a GPS fix thread on the forum with pics of the hardware breakdown.
Hi everyone,
I can't explain what happened... but my GPS is back. hallelujah !
I saw this morning that the Cyanogen 11 M10 for the hlte (Galaxy Note 3) was available.
I update the Cyanogen i had installed (M9)... and test GPS right after that... nothing.
And then, i tested it tonight, the satellite dish appeared with the cross... but i was able to "touch" it with my finger : And then the icon dissapeared, and the new icon with the sattelite dish and the wave appeared and i saw GPS Signal !
I got a lock after a few sec.
Sorry guys, i don't have any answer about what happened, and how tthe GPS got back to work.
But anyway, thanks for the help !
