Help me decide between the 6P and the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to decide what phone to get next. My current phone is the Galaxy Note 3. The Z5 and the 6P have the same SoC. So performance should be about the same, right?
What I like about the Z5 is that it's got a microSD slot and it's waterproof. What I like about the 6P is that it's available now and is pure Android. No clue when the Z5 will be available. And since I live in the US, I would probably have to buy an international version of the Z5 on ebay or amazon.
My priorities are lots of storage for my lossless music collection (have about a TB of music, and want to carry a fair chunk of it at any time) and good performance for productivity apps (Word, Excel) and games. The fact that the Z5 display is 4K is not a selling point for me.
Any help would be highly appreciated (and liked! ).

Z5 if you need storage even if u get a 128gb won't be as much a dedicated 128gb micro + 32/64gb internal, the z5 according to dxo now has the best camera on a phone as well.

Thanks for the advice. I'm definitely leaning towards the Z5 Premium. It can officially take up to a 200gb microSD. Camera is not so important to me. Do you think there 's a downside other than a) not pure Android and b) the wait for a definite release date?

Can't you wait a bit until new phones are released with more advanced SoC's? I don't have any evidence that the SD810 is working according to the price of the phones carrying it, I'm checking up performance test videos that put the Z5 against other phones and the results are not promising. I don't know if it's because of poor software optimisation or the SD810 being greatly under clocked to deal with the over heating issues, if it's the first thing then the nexus 6p should be fine.

The Z3 is more waterproof compare to the Z5. Sony said they slowly put the Z5 in the water for the test and you can literally swim with the Z3. So, don't be so confident with that.
the only advantage for me to buy the sony is:
1-the battery life
2-microsd card (but i'm pretty sure the 128gb version of the 6p will be cheaper)
3-4k Display
great media player
cons:
not pure android
not a lot of dev
slow update (5-7month)

The 128gb 6p is still cheaper than the 32gb z5 premium by about £60.
Z5 premium music quality will be better judging by th xperias of past.
Ps4 remote play on z5 not tyat youll use it.
Personally being a massive Sony Fan (everything is Sony in my house.) I understand that sony phones are not the best and they through in features that arent really needed. Sony arent commiting to fully waterproof any more. There is always a problem with their cameras. If your going android, I think pure android is the only way to go or get the s6edge plus or note 5 as they have superior hardware like ufs2 memory, quick wireless charging and 4gb Ram.

[Q] Should I get the Xperia SP against the Moto G ?

Hi !
I have an Xperia S which is dead now :crying: and am looking for a new phone at the moment.
Originally, I was looking at the Moto G 16gb but its got a very bad camera and lack of upgradable storage. So, I'm wondering whether the SP have a good camera or not !
BTW, what about the 4.4 availability ?
Is there any stable 4.4 custom ROM for SP ?
Sp is a good phone. Has a great camera. And feels premium to hold. In fact when my friend got it, I liked it so much that I sold my Galaxy s4 and bought an xperia z. Hope this helps.
Plus Sony makes camera modules for a lot of other manufacturers like Apple iPhones. Samsung galaxy series. So u almost always get a. Good camera with a mid range and higher sony phones

Yeah but I read a review saying that the 8 mp camera of the Xperia SP is very poor compared to that of the Xperia L.
I work in a machine design company and I have to take a lot of photos and videos of our products for making quick demos and filing the records. That implies I need a decent camera phone.
The Xperia S and the Samsung Wave I had were good performers in that regard.
I would be checking out the Xperia SP and the Galaxy S4 Mini and may be some LG phones today at this new shopping mall that opened in my city. If I'm not happy, I'll be going for the Moto G.
Its gonna be a good night
For the price you'd be hard pushed to beat the Moto G -- at only £120 sim free for the 8GB model it's an absolute bargain, but it's also a solid performer and has already been updated to 4.4.
Honestly speaking, you'd have to be getting a very good deal to make buying an Xperia SP now a good choice as it's already a year old and even at best would only be officially supported for another six months, which means that bug fixes and other software updates will dry up soon.

if you need a good camera, why not go for the Z1 or Z1 compact?
Xperia SP's camera is a huge disappointment, if that's a big thing for you, looks elsewhere. I read that GS4 mini's camera is pretty good (though, it's only 5mpx, if I recall). Where XSP shines is in it's processing power, since it has a decent processor and Adreno 320 GPU, which GS4 mini lacks. However, the lack of KitKat and 1GB of RAM make the Xperia SP hard to recommend.
You should also check Xperia ZR, where I live, it is just $10-$15dls more expensive than Xperia SP. xperia ZR is water-proof and has a 13MPX with a Quad-Core processor.
Xperia Sp camera its no so good. It you want a good camera phone buy a lumia 920/925 or a Galaxy s3 it you want android.

I'm from India and I'm getting the Xperia SP for ~300 USD (18000 INR) and yeah the Moto G 16 GB is available here for ~233 USD.
As for updates, I don't care as long as there is custom ROMs available.

After dropping the ZR from my list, I thought about getting the S3 but I hear its battery backup is not that great and yeah, I hate the rounded design Samsung uses. I think their Bada phones look much much better.
BTW, there are some rumers about the Xperia M2 and Xperia G being priced really low to compete with the Moto G. I wonder how low Sony would go in pricing them !
Xperia SP's camera is so pathetic that I am sure Moto G's pics will be much better than SP's. The reason I bought SP is its processing power and awesome design.

BTW, if mediatek guys were a bit more "open", the Huawei Ascend g700 would have been a great buy for me....great camera, lots of RAM, good IPS Lcd display etc. But,AFAIK, there is no custom ROMs or any other development for that phone because there is minimal support from mediatek for custom android development projects
You are concerned about SP camera but not about moto G camera? Haha. My friend has moto G, ant trust me, if you need (seems like that's your main priority) decent camera dont eve think about moto G. I have chosen SP over moto G and they both are about the same price.
Yet if you have doubts about SP camera, you can look into S3/S4mini (I considered those as options for me, but SP in overall seemed a better choice) or lumia 920 (I also considered this, but I need option too record my calls and WPs cant offer this yet L920 camera is amazing and I would assume price would be similar if its still available in sale).

I thought Moto G's camera was betther than SP's
The problem with Samsung is that their designs look so awful to me. Sony and HTC are much much better.
I'm an Opera Mini/Mobile/Desktop addict, can't use any other browser (lots of bookmarks and notes in the Opera in my account) and sadly, that rules WP devices like 920.
My options currently:
1. Blackberry Z10. If it has an android ROM, I would be going for this one but there isn't any AFAIK.
2. Upcoming Xperia G
3. Xperia SP
4. Xperia ZR
5. Samsung GS4 Mini
6. Samsung GS3
trust me

Good to know that we are on the same track about Samesong. I hate them.
Z10 was an option for me too, but it was too little hardware for the the price for me, so I left it out yet it seems to work flawlessly in youtube videos. Also it is very sexy device and since 10.2.1 OS update it supports .apk files so basically its an android with Blackberry stuff. Why would you need a ROM for Z10? Just for sake of flashing something or there is serious reason?
Xperia G seems ok. Is it known when it will be available? Are you ready to wait (and possibly wait to find out if you would afford it when its released)?

If your deciding factor is based the camera, I suggest you check this out:
http://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=3&idPhone1=5831&idPhone2=5364
As you can see, the SP may have a bigger pixel count but the image is over processed and has a lot of chromatic noise. If you need to zoom into a picture to look at small text, it may not be an ideal phone for you.
However, as an overall package (build quality, performance, battery life) it's probably the best phone in its price range.

Yes, I love the launchers for the Android and the look and feel of different ROMS like MIUI, CM etc. Its so amazing. I don't think the BB10 would support that much of customization
I'm waiting for the Xperia G..hope that I can afford it.

@x.marX
Go get Moto X.
Period.
I don't know where you reside , but if you have got access to Moto Maker , get a customized Moto X. The camera and the processioning power is alot better than Xperia SP. But Xperia SP's design is far better than its competitors.
But since Xperia SP is getting old, I think Moto X would be a better choice regarding the future updates , camera and performance.

We have Moto X here but the full fledged Moto Maker won't be ready any time soon.
I'm not a big fan of Moto X btw.
1. "Rounded design" - not my cup of tea
2. Memory not expandable - I have a lot of FLAC audio files
3. Non-removable battery
Only advantage of SP over G is the memocard and LTE.
If you can live without them get MotoG/16GB and you'll be OK.
I changed from Moto G to SP, but regret it...

If possible try to save enough money for Xperia ZR or LG Optimus G. Since both the product are getting pretty old, you may have huge discounts on them.

xperia z4

http://www.xda-developers.com/sony-xperia-z4-unveiled-in-japan/
So according to those news, the camera on z4 will be the same as z3's with some small software improvements. This could be something big, raw or more manual settings perhaps even better whitebalance.I don't think raw functionality could be ported but atleast we'd have a better camera app if the news aren't lying.
What's your opinion on this? How satisfied are you with the current camera app we've got?
Not worth the upgrade. The 810 SoC is really bad on battery and has tons of issue with overheating. Plus smaller battery? No thanks. I'll stick with my Z2. Still performs flawless so far and looks the same as the Z4.
My upgrade is due in August i have been hoping it would be about the right time for the Z4 ,
But i just was hoping for better after all i did not bother with the z3 because it the same as i already have,,,,,

Exactly, though if it does have the same camera but with improved software, it would benefit us z2 users.
@lodger
Z2 is a decent flagship, I don't think an upgrade is neccessary however if you do upgrade don't go for Z4, snapdragon 810 has overheating issues, it will have smaller battery plus more power consumption.
Go for S6 or S6 edge.I know samsung has quality issues but those two are premium phones. They don't have snapdragon afterall, rumor says samsung tried 810 but couldn't deal with the heat so they used their own chipset which has great battery/performance.
so the official words is this will be called the Z3+, not the Z4.
Source: http://www.theverge.com/2015/5/26/8659357/sony-xperia-z3-plus-specs-features-release-date
Time to switch to LG G4.
I'll be sticking with the Z2 thanks, until ara comes out at least
the Z3+ supports alot of manual settings like Manual Focus, shutter speed,ISO and white balance. So there is hope for us too. ( :
^ + 1
This makes me happy, manual controls is what is needed on a phone with a good camera
manual control is introduced for the z3+ but still no raw support
check this video
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ng9Cqcs2-CA
Thats disapointing
Raw support would make my college work so much easier.
Lets hope sony bring raw mode
Someone will mod and port those settings to Z2!
Still Z3+ isn't a worthy update. A true Z4 with 820 SOC when it comes.

How do you all know if the Z4 have heating issues, do you have it ? No the device isn't out yet so you all cant complain, Sony fix that probarly till the release and if someone have the Z4 then we can talk about it and please dont say Samsung is a quality phone since they have the s6, Sony is a better quality phone and for sure a better design, let samsung stick on thier plastic devices !
every phone that has a S810 built in has been hot till now. And if not it's been throttling down like hell.
Even this Chinaphone (name forgotten sorry) which had 5 patent's pending on cooling technology and said they will get the dragon tamed failed.
and from a material point of view glass is not really a good material for heat transportation. I don't expect any kind of Magic from Sony in this case.
But yeah, we will see that with the first reviews
btw Camera.... we have a IMX220 sensor in our Z2 right? Same as Z3...
Z4 will also get this one or the 16MP IMX240 as in SGS6 and Note4, with native 16:9 resolution.
Though the IMX230 is said to ship in April 2015.... still 4:3 and some pretty neat features.

I am a major fan of the flag ship Xperia mobiles. My last Samsung purchase was the Note 3 and I was so peeved at the plastic metal and plastic leather, hell I don't know why they didn't use cling film for a screen. No way was I ever going to purchase Samsung again. Sony produce superbly crafted mobiles from quality materials and they feel superb in the hand as do Apple also HTC.
Comes the Samsung Galaxy S6 rang and I have bought the S6Edge then returned it for the S6 and now have the Edge+ As well as the S6. Top line specifications and micro engineered (at long last) like a Swiss watch and, I may add, for the price they bloomin well should be.
To the best of my knowledge the Z5 range are not yet released so can't pass comment. I would 'guess' it will be a superb mobile that will stand side by side with the S6 line and iPhone 6S. As I write this, flag ship models from HTC, Sony, iPhone and Samsung are all very VERY well specified and engineered. A major part of your choice will be the OS and aesthetics. 'The best' will be a relative term and in reality doesn't exist.
Ryland
I hate any tft displays (amoled lover) beside that sony is a nice phone.
Samsung has root but no custom rom. Sony Z5 premium has neither. SD 810 has heating issues as far as I know.
both has ups and downs with me so i can't rly choose btween it from the specs and reviews
s6 edge+ down points:
battery only 3Ah (then again it should be on par with sony i think bcuz it has led instead tft with led backlight, though i always carry an portable charger with me so it should do the trick)
display not 4k for an 5.7" screen
no microsd card
only 25gb of 32gb usabel internal storage (no clue why they use 7gb for other ****)
slower gpu vs snapdragon phones (from benchmarks)
s6 edge+ up points:
led screen (witch i love bcuz it shows true black and white and it doesn' t break as fast as tft)
large 5.7" display
wireless charge
nice design
fast cpu/ram (from benchmarks) and less heating
4gb RAM
sony experia z5 premium down points:
the cpu heating as mentioned
why only 3gb ram ?
no snapdragon 820 (witch could be beter for this phone bcuz 4k screen)
tft screen witch can't perform true black images
4k on an 5.5" and only for movies and pictures -.-
sony experia z5 premium up points:
4k screen (altough for movie and pictures only)
2 days with no charging (yeah sure only the 1st 2 charges)
micros sd upto 200gb
nice design
water and dustproof (don't try it to trow it in the water or it breaks)
good audio (well i assume it still has since the walkmen phones)
faster GPU then samsungs (from benchmarks)
more ppi then samsung
beter battery then samsungs
all this is kinda , if i could merge the phones together make 1 good phone from it
i think i go for samsung since it has 75 euro cashback now also i loved the galaxy s3
i don't know how sony experia z5 premium is but the specs don't realy fit together, specialy the 4k screen and 3gb ram , the screen is kinda worthless for daily stuff untill you view pics or watch movies
as for samsung, im struggeling bcuz of the gpu performance, no sd card, weaker battery, but can use an otg if need but that is all extra work and power drain
hi
You should think more about the experience when you hold the s6 edge+ with the z5 premium. Before edge+ i had a xperia z3, the only thing i miss is that the battery life from sony devices. Moreover, xperia z series run almost original android so you have nothing to play, but the edge plus does. So my oppinion is the edge plus. Sorry for my pour english.

Z5 Compact competition? Sharp Aquos XX 2

Recently released with very little fanfare, unsure of global availability.
4.7" display, Snapdragon 808, 3gb RAM, 1080p Display, 2800mha battery, 13 MP camera, Water and dust resistant.
Could call it a Z5 compact pro?
http://gsminsider.com/2015/10/sharp...ecifications-features-price-and-availability/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFyIN6cxuWM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTguV9v9acc
I wouldn't call it a compact pro, snapdragon 808 is far from the 810, the 100 mAh difference won't counter the fact that need it needs to drive four times as many pixels but the IGZO screen might help a bit but I rather go with the IPS screen. While the Z5 series camera seems to have some issues (most likely software) 13MP is a far cry from 23. The RAM is nice but doubt it will do much difference in the long run.
I could maybe see it as an alternative to the Z5C but it is in no way it's superior, it's also IP67 (from what info I can find) which is a far cry from IP65 and IP68 even though Sony has gone back a bit on their marketing for it.
Very nice little phone but like they said above, that FHD display will require more juice to run, despite being IGZO. I seriously don't feel a need for more pixels on the Z5 display, it looks great already and I'd rather the GPU performance and battery life be boosted than just more pixels. It's also a shame about the 16GB internal storage. The RAM is the only real specification that makes me envious, even then I'm quite content with the Z5C multitasking so far. It's great to see another high-spec compact phone though.
What's Sharp's track record with OS updates like? That's the real question here I think. Sony has proven to support their Z series well and we already know they are busy working on the Marshmallow update.
its no competition because sharp only aims for the asian market.
There needs to be more competition in this market. I'm still plenty satisfied with my Z3C and while neither the Z5C nor the Aquos Compact are a big enough step up for me to consider upgrading, I'm glad that another player as entered.
I held an old HTC Incredible S the other day and it felt oh so good! If HTC could just get their heads of out their butts and develop a decent phone again (not a phablet), I would run back to them in a hurry.

I would be even more interested in the Z5C if it had those specs. I don't understand why the Compact is still the only real flagship in a smaller size. No one else seems interested in competing with Sony.
I'm jealous of the Camara opening speed. Lol

I actually bought a sharp aquos shv31 that was a hare smaller than my z1 compact, and a beautiful full 1080p display. Problem is they lock the apn to their austrailan market and apparently use some onerous anti-root methods that no one has broken it open. I have to send back as its useless with no data, but I totally love the sharp phone otherwise. I really wish they would put out an unlocked version, as I ended up buying a z5 compact to replace my z1c, and already waiting to hate the fact I'm going to lose most of its features when I unlock/root it.
Damn sony and their drm.

Yes, I also owned Z1c and Z5c now. Was also looking forward on sharp phones but nowadays they are very hard to root, so a no go to me.

Are you planning to get the XZ2 premium ?

What do you think about this phone ?
Yes!
Need to see if the camera is up to snuff first
It depends on the difference between xz2 and xz2 premium. Right now I am leaning to an Asian version of XZ2, but if the new camera design does something novel, then I might consider it.
Most probably depending on the camera quality
I’m hoping to purchase it. I enjoy my photography and have loved Sony phones in the past. Love the build quality of the XZ2 from what I’ve seen. Almost purchased the XZ2 until the premium was just announced.
Some of my previous phones have been fairly heavy in the past so should be able to adapt to it again lol. Have a iPhone X at present so use to the dongle now as well as Bluetooth headphones so no big problem there.
If the picture quality can match or supersede the current crop of smartphones Sony can have my money. They make great sensors but if they can also get the software right ie speed of capture etc they’ll be onto a winner. I know at present phone cameras will never match the likes of my dslr or Sony compact camera but it’s nice to be able to take impromptu shots. Looking forward to the release even though they’re saying it may not come to the U.K.
I'm definitely thinking about it. Depends a lot on how the camera fares in real life and what other manufacturers will offer. For now I'm torn between the xz2p, p20 pro, and maybe u12, op6 or whatever Nokia is going to bring us with the X. It's gonna be a tough choice.
I am.
Although a couple of things bother me, i would have liked a bit more screen to body & i really don't understand why they removed the invisible fingerprint sensor from the power button!
other than that, everything is looking top-spec as id expect.
I am in!
It depends on the camera because I have XZ2 . But higher probability is that I will buy it and grab another gift from Sony. I am wondering what gift will they give with XZ2 Premium.
No XZ2 forum ? I've had the XZ2 in the uk for the last 2 weeks, really really good phone, came from a Pixel 2 XL which i always found a bit big... Battery life with the new processor is incredible, sony have done a great job... Camera is pretty good not as good as the Pixel 2 XL, but not to far away...
Yup, didn't bother getting the XZ2, will just get this instead!

Can't wait until somebody gets their hands on the phone an I can watch some reviews. Seems like Sony just announced it and now they just let it be forgotten. New HTC and Oneplus will come and I probably will have bought something else before we hear any more news again
For sure. It´s the most promising camera setup so far (except P20 Pro maybe) and I also had XZ2, which is a great phone. We only have to know when they release it... "Summer" could mean June or end of August. Even in Japan NTT Docomo talks about "Summer". Sony said now at their latest investor conference they will focus with Sony Mobile on European market. So I really hope that they release this phone better today than tomorrow.

Now, more than likely I got the XZ2 and I am really enjoying it.
It really depends. If they release it soon, I may jump on it. But if they wait until the end of summer, I'm probably going to wait and see what the Pixel 3 XL offers.
