I've seen multiple places the 816 is only a "maybe" at his point due to low internal storage

See this tweet from HTC
https://twitter.com/htc/status/648906367713996800

Yeah. Pretty cool! I thought there was no way HTC would give 2 updates to a midrange phone.
The tweets came from HTC and also also the President of HTC America, Jason Mackenzie.
I'd love to know why they're choosing to update the 816 while they have no plans to update the 8 month newer and more spec heavy Desire Eye.

I went on HTC's website and they showed no scheduled updates for the Virgin Mobile version of the Desire 816.

That's carrier branded phones for you.

Yes, Virgin Mobile strikes again.

If this rumor (Marshmallow) turns out to be true, this is going to revitalize this phone in terms of storage memory. Marshamallow support adoptable storage (ability to treat microSD cards as if they were internal storage).

This is what it says on the HTC website:
Virgin Mobile HTC Desire 816: This device is currently on Android 5.0 Lollipop. No additional updates are planned at this time.
Whether you get Marshmallow or not may depend on your carrier.

Yep, unfortunately we'll have to hope that someone can make a Marshmallow Rom for the Virgin Mobile 816 from one of the other variants.
I messaged an HTC exec about what it says on HTC's software updates page about Virgin Mobiles 816 on Dec. 18th. He replied really quickly with "We're still working to make it happen. Stay tuned!"
That isn't saying much and doesn't instill much confidence but if we don't get the update at least we know it's 100% on Virgin Mobile.

HTC says Virgin is getting is getting 6.0
Tweet to me from a couple weeks back. Can't post the link directly yet.

Well, took out my old Desire 816 after reading this and surprise. Got 2 updates :
1) about 52 MB
2) 1.67GB
And now the "grand pa" is running Marshmallow .
P.S.: bought 32 GB memo card and now it has 40GB (well 34 in reality).
PS2: if no update for my M8s by end of the month, then goodbye HTC!

How?
I have an 816 from virgin and have not gotten an update. How did you get it? Do you have VM?

Also, it looks like @Rexton270 is in England so, and please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm assuming that you are not on Virgin Mobile USA.

Airtel HTC HERO 2.73.720.5

Just got my Airtel Carrier - HTC Hero (unlocked) 2.73.720.5
Im surprised that everyone besides India have a 2.73.4xx firmware. Is it just me or did India get a smaller updated edition (revision) compared to the rest of the world, or is this just Airtel's doing of a little extra in the firmware/rom.
After running from WM to the iPhone, Ive finally made peace (hopefully) with the HTC Hero (Android). Being an avid Star Trek Fan...all I can say is I've got "Data" - what about you all
I did my little share of forum searching, but I couldnt find a single post regarding the Airtel HTC Hero (the last HTC Magic was locked with that stupid and insanely painful SPL), so my question begins with
1) Is the Airtel HTC Hero using another crazy SPL?
2) If so, what guide should I follow for unlocking (ability to ROM upgrade/change)
3) I can confirm that we are NOT locked to SIMCARDS - I can use my Idea Cellular Simcard just fine.
Added questions include - are there "Kitchens" like we used to have for Windows Mobile ?
Hope someone can help me out here - I'd love to be part of the ol' Cooking & Chef team
Nice to know that Airtel has brought in the latest version of the ROM.
Did you buy it with the Airtel dealer OR from a conventional distributor. At Bangalore, it is priced at 32K. How much did it cost you?? I am more of a palm guy...the palm pre just does not seem to come out.
I paid 33,600 actually Couldnt get a better deal and didn't want to wait a few more days since I'm off to USA tomorrow (rdosti = shivam)
Performance
Guys,
I am planning to buy Hero through Airtel and have a few questions,
1. Is the airtel version unlocked ?
2. Should I buy from Airtel or open market ?
3. Any reasons not to buy it ? Performance ? sluggishness ?
and lastly, is it simple to update the firmware, I am very keen on the new Android 2.0 update for the new google GPS app.
thanks in advance,
Jaspreet
Only the first part of 2.73.xxx.x bit matter. The "xxx.x" refer to carrier and regional customization, the ROM is basically the same.
have same phone, in China.
Hi,
Did you root the phone? I have the same phone, but i bought it in China for 3100 rmb. I'm trying, and im stuck on downloading 'boot.img'... FAILED (remote: not allow)
im going through this guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548218
Hope it works. ill post results later.
done!!! im on MoDaCo ver2.
Followed the following guides, in order.

I don't want to hijack your post but ditto on the T-Mobile phones, any information on if their phones are locked or unlocked.
If you buy from carrier retail shop they are normally locked, but if you buy from a third party they come unlocked most of the time. Just ask who ever your buying from.

My friend got his from Vodafone unlocked. The guy at Vodafone said that due to the short supply they were just getting them unlocked from the manufacturer and sending them straight out to customers. This was about 2-3 weeks ago so the situation could have changed.
I received my replacement from Vodafone last Friday, its completely unbounded and unlocked

I got my DHD directly from Vodafone - it is unbranded and unlocked - per my own experience with Vodafone - over the last 2 years or so I got the following phones from Vodafone:
- Touch pro2 - branded but Unlocked
- Windows 7 Trophy - unbranded and unlocked
- Desire HD (DHD) - unbranded and unlocked
so far all phones have been received direct from Vodafone and all have been unlocked - so I think I can make this healthy assumption that HTC phones are pretty much unlocked from Vodafone.
Hope this helps.

Luving this site which I've just stumbled on and answered my question straight away, so here's some info that I've been told from two different T-Mobile UK staff.
Phone is SIM locked but the firmware hasn't been touched (this site has confirmed this too)
The phone will have some kind of T-Mobile logo branding but that's it. I can't wait for my new DHD to turn up now, no stock with T-Mobile and may not be for 3 weeks or more ...... nevermind hay I'll just have to wait.

HTC Desire HD - upgrade to 2.3.5

Hi everyone,
I have Desire HD with 2.3.3 and sense sense 2.1. The handset is by Virgin but i am using it in Pakistan. Just wanted to ask that since HTC is officially pushing the upgrade, would it be possible for me to get it by using Virgin bought set using in Pakistan on a a local cellular company?
so just wait for the update, i get mine on 29 dec 31!
after a wait for more than 2 months, got the update yesterday

4.2.2 o2 UK just released!

Anyone on o2 pay monthly, the 4.2.2 update for the C6603.
Active Customization in Service Menu is 1270-4993_R8A. UK Unbranded, check your Xperia Z, you might be in luck! Before anyone asks I don't know how to make a FTF so I'm sorry to say I won't be able to accommodate those who want it.

In which case, why did it take them so many more weeks than anyone else to release it?
I have a sim free Xperia Z and recently changed from orange to Virgin sim only account. I did previously upgrade my device to 4.2 using Taiwan firmware and today it's just requested to upgrade again. Same version 4.2 but hoping UK instead of Taiwan (not that it'll make much difference)
Anyway I can check?

o2 are generally slow with updates.
So this is on o2 pay monthly branded devices you mean?
As I am on o2 pay monthly but it's sim free & still no update - I'm confused now, I don't even know what the difference is anymore ha! :silly:

So then you don't have an o2 pay monthly branded device, you have a sim free UK unbranded device, check your customization number in the service menu. Open the dialler and type in *#*#7378423#*#* then look for the customization info. Your device isn't an o2 device, it's an unbranded UK variant of the C6603 model.

Typical, I flashed the Spanish version yesterday! How do I get back to the UK version?
Question. I'm assuming us unbranded UK Z owners are going straight to 4:2.2 from 434. Will we have white balance from 253 and the modifications with the colour balance?

Not necessarily. Look at 'Generic US' (C6602): no carrier customizations and still on 10.1.A.1.434.
Also, 'Generic UK' is probably being sold in Ireland too, since a 'Generic IE' customization does not exist.

Different model number though - my theory, they create the unbranded UK update first, then give it to the carriers, release the carrier updates then they can release the UK unbranded update.
US unbranded update may not even be ready yet, where as we know that the UK update must be ready as it has been customised and released for the carriers
