Galaxy Note 4- Why Is My Phone Working Without The Battery? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Phone actually working without battery???
Okay this is weird... I am new to this Android developing stuff so cut me some slack...
I just took out the battery to restart quickly, but it stayed on... I made sure the battery was far enough away from the device to not be using any sort of black magic. I left it for a while and eventually I just put it back in and rebooted through the menu. What was happening? Draining from the RAM to keep the display on? Some sort of solar panel? I am confused!

Remember to unplug the phone from charger cable...

I would vote for black magic but it's probably just a anomaly . My 910F as soon as i unplug the battery will go bye bye in 0.5 sec ! )

After you remove the battery, there is a little sticker on the phone where the battery slot is (it has the phone model number on it, as well as other information). Sometimes you need to flick the sticker with your finger a few times. This tells the Pikachus in the phone that the battery is out and they'll soon stop using Thunder Bolt.

Yes it's draws current from any power source connected to the phone. Some phones will shut off when battery is disconnected even tho a power cable is connected to protect hardware from shorting out and other phones won't.

Battery problem, try this.

Preparing...
With the phone in the on position.
Fully charge the battery with the phone on... (until the led turns green.)
Once the led turns green, unplug the charger until the led goes off.
After the led goes off, plug the charger back in. When the led turns green , power off the phone.
now.... with the phone fully powered off...
1. Unplug the charger.
2. Wait until led goes off.
3. Plug charger back in until the led turns green. When it turns green, unplug the charger again and go to step 1.
4. repeat steps 1 and 3, 10 times. This may take anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 mins per cycle. Typically only about 1 minute. though.
DO NOT DRAIN THE BATTERY. The goal is not to empty the battery and recharge like ni-cads (those have memory, these don't). These are lithiums, so we need to do the opposite...
And lets all sing the hokie pokie and shout
The cells were not charged evenly, so each cell holds different charges. So when you charge it, 1 cell may be 95% another 100 and 98 etc... so when you balance the cells, they function like they are suppose to.
this phone does not have a cell balancer built into it.
So charge, wait til its almost dead, charge again til full, then do the process w the phone off?

I'm sorry this guide doesn't really make much sense. the led won't be on if the phone is unplugged so how will I know if its on Orange or not? also is the phone on or off when I'm doing this?

changed the instructions on top, i suck at writing.
I suppose this might explain why sometimes my phone plunges to about 90% almost immediately after taking it off the charger, but then battery decreases at a "normal" rate after that?
So were reconditioning our batteries...
I'm 99.9% sure the battery is single cell...it wouldn't make sense to have a dual cell 3.7v LiPo unless you wanted heavy discharge.
I don't see how this will make any charge other than the phone not topping the battery off...which in that case an external charger would do a much better job is so.
I tried this and my battery has been holding steady at 100% with the screen off for the last five minutes so something worked.
So is this a one time thing to re-condition the battery or will we have to do this more then once
Woah, voodoo magic here. Any proof of this working.....

That's true, won't hurt anything. WTF I'll give it a try, maybe get proven wrong and learn something too..
I gave this a try and I must say that it is working. Before I did this, as soon as I would take my phone off the charger it would immediately drop to 96%. Now as david279 said, it will actually stay on 100% for awhile and have better standby time. Good find joker, I do see a difference.
How did you find out about the cells not being charged evenly?
WOW...this actually works. This should be posted on other forums so ppl know about it.

I'm a battery nut... actually, i used lithiums in model RC airplanes all the time. Balancing is a must.
Maybe someone can build an app for this, to reboot cycle on and off the power?
Is that even possible?

Phone got hot and won't turn ON anymore

Yo folks,
My bro's PLAY is on 2.3.3 [the latest update available here] which I had updated via SEUS. Today, after gaming a bit my bro told me that the battery dropped to 13% from well over 60-70%. Also, the phone was pretty hot...
I pulled the battery out and let it sit for over an hour. I then plugged in the battery, and now the Phone won't start - it just shows the blinking RED Led. Nothing on screen whatsoever. I don't think it's powering on at all.
Any idea what to do next, i'm pretty stumped
p.s. Phone is on stock firmware, unrooted.
well u could try another battery in there if thats possible
the xperia x10 has the same battery
so if u cant find some one with the same phone
u can use one of those

Thanks.. I actually have a X10 myself, but it's with my bro atm.. and i've come at another place earlier today for a couple of days with his PLAY.
I've plugged it in and it's still showing the blinking RED led. I'll wait and see what happens..
AFAIK the blinking red Light indicates the Battery is completley drained and does not have enought juice to turn the device on .. let it charge up a bit and see if it turns over.. then give the device a FULL charge .

Yeah... I have it hooked up to a charger for 2 hours now, still only blinking red led and not powering up.
Does it take that long?
try holding the power button down for like 15 seconds through multiple blinking red lights

It's been hooked up to the wall charger for a little more than 2.5 hours now. Still only the steadily blinking red LED [led blinks every 5 seconds].
Any ideas? I'm starting to get worried

Yeah, my bro bought it like 3 months ago.
Only suggestion I have left is to take it to where you bought it and get it replaced under warranty.
If it's from a carrier call them and ask for a replacement mailed to you while it's being fixed cuz you don't want to use a different phone model.

Okay guys, I came back home, and charged the PLAY's battery upto 50% in my X10. So the PLAY now boots up & I also hooked it up to my machine and did a re-install of the 2.3.3 update. Now it's back to original state, with only the market logged in and my bro's contacts restored from SDcard.
However, it still does not charge as normal. It actually is DISCHARGING, instead of charging up when connected to the wall charger. And it still gets hot
Could it be a hardware fault?
did you try the x10 battery in the Play?

Yeah, with my X10's battery the PLAY booted up fine - but it was still getting very hot.
I had taken it to the dealer earlier today, but unfortunately the Sony Ericsson service center we have in my city was closed today because nobody showed up there due to heavy rains.
I have to go back there tomorrow... let's see.
Wish I could not show up to work because of rain
Try a different charger.

Well, the phone is at the service centre atm and they have kept the phone + charger [without battery tho].
They're going to reflash it n ****... I have to go back in a few hours to check the status.. wish me luck
Update : It is a hardware fault and I'm getting a replacement in 10-15 days. The service center asked me to leave the phone there and gave me a job sheet. The replacement phone will be sent to the dealer and i'll need to pick it up from him.

[Q] Battery problems (phone won't turn on or charge)

So about a week or two ago my phone randomly shut itself off. I'm not sure exactly what happened but I just locked it and slid it in my pocket and an hour or so later I checked it and it wouldn't turn on, yet I could feel the gpu/processor getting extremely hot after a minute or so of failed attempts. Also the trackpad would flash red, which I had never noticed before. Prior to this I had been noticing my battery was draining quicker.
So when I try to charge it will charge itself for approximately a minute or so and then the orange LED will go out, again the processor/gpu gets very hot. After about an hour if I come back the phone will feel cold again as if It had been off and the phone won't turn on. I was able to buy a new battery today, because I read it could be related to a dead battery. This new battery boots to the familiar HTC mytouch4g intro (which is good, considering the old battery doesn't even power on), but then will shut off immediately after that or occasionally just get stuck at that screen. I can boot into recovery but then it says low battery voltage. I tried to do a factory reset but it just takes me back to the bootscreen again and shuts off.
I'm not sure what to do, as I've bricked a previous phone before and this doesn't really seem similar. I'm thinking about leaving the phone on charge, even though the orange LED is off with the hopes that it will charge. Anyone else have similar experience to this?

Sorry about the long response time. Unfortunately now my phone will not turn on with either battery, so I couldn't flash the img. I think it could be possible that my phone is not actually charging the battery and both of them have died. I'm not entirely sure, I'm going to charge it overnight and hope for the best.

Shuts down as if low-battery, but with 50% - 95% left!

This has been driving me nuts for ages, and now I just use the battery to transfer my phone from one charger to another! But to be honest I haven't tried anything to fix it as yet.
It started with my phone shutting down when I took a few photos - now, if my phone gets down to 80% I expect it to shutdown. It won't fire back up until I put it on charge.
Occasionally when I try to turn it back on, it wont fire up, and the blue LED comes on and stays on until I charge it or take the battery out.
Occasionally it will reach 50%, but that would be a rare occasion! I do still have the original battery, which is now over two years old.
It's a great phone - if only the battery would last longer than 10 minutes under use! It hasn't been rooted or anything - it is as I got it from new.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

A new battery is really cheap ( 15-25 usds) and probably would solve your problem.
There is no reason for this topic unless you have the original battery.

see if the problem still remains that means your battery is almost dead and expect a random shutdowns at anytime

I understand that the battery is probably past it's best, but it was the fact that it states that it has lots of life left, and then acts as if it doesn't that throws me. That's the reason why I have posted this topic.

I've done this now. Thanks for the tip. It doesn't seem to have made any difference though so it's probably just the battery.
I just expected it to indicate the correct battery level in the battery level indicator.

I have a dead Samsung S8, can I fix it?

This post is probably hardware related, so I hope it's not that irrelevant here.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S8, SM-G950FD that hasn't been used for over a year because it's gone completely dead. Won't turn on, not even battery charging display, i tried charging it overnight and still no results, the battery doesn't even get warm. I've tried bringing it to a service center but they don't fix Samsung phones, so I decided to try fixing it by myself.
The first thing I do is I check the battery, it does look weird but I'm not sure if it's the main problem. Here's the image of the battery.
My question is, could the battery be the reason the phone won't turn on? or could it be other things such as my charging port, or the display screen itself?
Again, sorry if I made a mistake somewhere, thanks for any help.
Replace the battery. Go from there.
It won't boot without a good battery.

The charger might provide enough current to open the boot menu. Booting uses a lot more current.

If they are good they have to unless they reached their auto shutdown voltage. Typically they have a 50-70% charge.
Hell you can get a used N10+ for $300 and up. It's a quantum leap in performance.
Do you have any indication it is booting? Like do you feel it getting warmer? If you do it could be a bad screen. I have an S8 with a bad screen and it's just blank but I can tell it's booting because of it getting warmer and vibrating. I think the S8s are known for having the screens fail. I can get a replacement screen on Aliexpress.com for less than $100 but it would only be worth it to me if I could put on a custom ROM. Unfortunately, bootloaders on snapdragon S8s can't be unlocked and probably never will be. So it's not worth it and I guess it's going to the recycler.
The irony is that my old Exynos S7 is happily running a custom Android 12 ROM and doing everything I need it to do. So if you are in the market for a super cheap unlockable Android phone you can't go wrong with an Exynos S7 running Custom Android 12 ROM.
I just bought an Exynos S10 off ebay which will be replacing my S7. Qualcomm/Samsung can go pound sand trying to force us into upgrading our phones every few years.
