Don't remove your battery - Sprint Galaxy S 5 General

So my brother has an s6 and I always wondered what would happen if it were to freeze or boot loop. Well apparently pressing and holding volume down plus power force reboots the device. Similar to pressing and holding power button on a computer.
Well we have the same feature on our s5!
I like this cause I have a lifeproof on my phone. Makes rebooting so much easier!
Just sharing this awesome info!

No it doesn't work. It stays powered on and just shows you the power menu. Try it yourself. I'm on the latest bootloader so maybe on older ones it works with just power button. I know on my s4 it worked with just power button but now on the s5 and s6 it's power button and volume down.

You may be correct. I can't remember on my wife's s5. On the Note 3, you only have to hold down power, but it takes a really long time. I'm getting her s5 in a few days or so when she upgrades

Ahh. Yes, Note 3 and S4 had similar bootloaders. So I think you are right for that device.

ive had my S5 since launch week, and its been rootd, rommed and TWRP'd since day 1 and the 15 second press of the powerbutton has rebooted it on all firmwares ive ran

Well power alone does not work on mine. I must use volume down as well. Volume down is obviously required for it to work for some people. I don't understand why you people keep going on about this. If it works with just the power button for you, then it'll work with power button and volume button.

i too was kinda surprised to see this in a thread, as i thought it was already well known

I think power+volume is used on stock firmware and perhaps the power button alone works on custom roms?

[Q] Oh no Bricked!

I tried to update my firmware last night using odin (I've used it several times for my Galaxy S) and it failed, the error message was something along the lines of "write operation failed"
after waiting 25mins to see if my tab would reboot it didn't so I held down the power button to restart it and it switched off and now it won't switch on again ....
I've tried plugging it into all my usb slots, charging through the wall charger and tried using android commander but nothing makes the screen pop up with that little image of a computer and phone.
I can't even get into download mode, and odin doesn't pick it up. I think it's bricked for good,
I had a issue with the USB cable and had to get it replaced by samsung, now my ELF (Early-Life Failure) is up so I don't know what to do.....
Any Suggestions?
It's ok buddy its not bricked just plug in to the usb on the pc with odin3 on and leave at for a wile and it will come right back up.

I left it plugged in for about 10/15 mins and nothing happened after that I tired to to the whole power+volume down+home button to turn it off and back on, didn't work and just tried to ADB it and the device isn't found.
So I think its a costly paperweight atm
Ok well plug it in to the wall outlet and leave it for a few hours. I had tbe same prom you had and thats what work for me.

lol I liked my paperweight too much Ok I'll leave charged at home while I go to work for 7 hours, Thanks for your help bulldebeerman, Hopefully this fixes the ubertab (yes I nicknamed this paperweight!)
Ok so It's still bricked.... I forgot to mention the buttons don't work eg. I push and hold the power button and it does nothing. I charged it for the day so it should be 100% battery and now odin isn't finding it still. Also I didn't have USB debbuging enabled :/
Now I will admit I don't have a Tab(til next month) but wouldn't you un brick it the same way you do a Samsung Vibrant?
(Am not trying to be smart, just trying to find out everything I can before I buy it)...And on that note is there a 32GB version out?

Have you tried dropping the phone into Recovery Mode?
There is some confusion on what buttons to press where some say to press and hold the Volume Up AND Power Buttons simultaneously, whereas others mention pressing the above AND the Back Button.
If you can get into Recovery Mode you may be able to restart the phone.
If not and Revery Mode works try dropping the phone into Download Mode which is the same for RM but you press the Volume Down instead of Up.
With DM you will then be able to use third party software (Odin & a suitable ROM image from samfirmware'com) to bring the phone back up and running.
Yep tried all that tried
Power + Volume Up
Power + Volume Down
Power + Volume Up + Down
Power + Volume Down + Home
Power + Volume Domn + Up + Home
so um.... nothing makes the phone start

You mentioned Home button but not the Back Button.
I take it that does not work either?
Sorry forgot to menton that ... tried all possible combos for that too .... and adb won't detect the tab which kinda really make me think its brick for good :/
Its not bricked.
Power it off, and power it back on holding the vol down button and the power button.
When you see the computer---!---phone icon, release the keys, and connect it to a pc with an open odin. It will get recognized ( even though you dont get the download mode, you are in it ).
After that, flash whatever you need.
Try that and let me know.

Question, Problem with Power Button?

Here is something kinda funny. When I turn off my Asus or just the screen I hit the power button quick response and it works. When the unit is off I hit the button for a second and it doesnt turn on. sometimes I have to hold it for 5 seconds or so. I know the screen turns on after you release it but I am wondering what is normal since I dont have another one to compare it to. Or someone knows something I dont. I am running rooted 1.4 and acutally just installed clemsyn v12 but it has done the power button thing all along. I actually dont remember if it did it pre root.
I just started having issues with my power button, and did a search to see if others had issues. Is the upper left side of your back bezel creeky? My power button just got stuck, but I had something similar to what you described. I wonder if the creekiness contributed to inconsistent power button presses.
Actually I don't notice creekyness but boy my button has really gotten bad. the past few days I have had to push ans hold the button numerous. times to start. I think I may send it back.....

Same here. Have had the TF for more than a month. Been having this issue the last few days. I noticed it works fine when the battery is near full. The emptier ---> the worst. Does it have anything to do with the overclocked kernel (voltage-settings..) ?? May go back to stock kernel to check out.
I have had mine for a week and it started doing the same thing. After trial and error, I found that this seems to work. Press and hold the power button for two seconds, then release it. Immediately press and release it again without holding it down for any length of time. It has worked every time for me the past three days.
I've got a completely stock 3.1 tablet and a quick press (< 1 sec) while the power is off does nothing. A press of about 2 seconds will power up
i just rooted with prime 1.5 and started having the problems with power button. I may have to go back and check. I didnt have any problems 10 minutes ago in stock.
Edit: my power button seems to be back to normal, i am still rooted and all i did was to wait overnight, weird.
I read somewhere on xda that one has to hold the power button for 6 seconds from the turned-off state to start booting the device. Seems weird indeed, but doesn't really bother me, as long as it is consistent. The tablet will be in the sleep mode most of the time anyway.

[Q] HELP! My Tab 7.7 can't boot!

Anybody knows what's wrong and how do I solve it? Here's the entire story (if it helps):
I went to Play and updated my apps. I press and held the power button and selected "restart". (I restart my device regularly) However, after shutting down, it does not boot at all and no matter how many times I press the power button it just wouldn't boot up!
I tried charging it too. Nothing happens even after plugging in.

Can you get to the boot loader, if so, try to wipe data from the recovery within the boot loader.
Or else leave the battery to drain fully , this will solve your problem and the tab will boot.
This happened to me couple of weeks ago and draining the battery solved this issue.

May I know how do I get to the bootloader? I can't even allow the battery to drain. The problem is it is not even starting at all. I pressed the power button a million times and NOTHING happens at all, the screen didn't even turn on.

Nope. I wish it did.
Try to hold the power button in about 4 or 5 seconds. I doubt it'll do anything. It sounds like there's a problem with power button or hardware.
I had a thrive 7 before I got my gtab 7.7 and my first one I exchanged because of a problem identical to yours. It was very sketchy to power on.
Exchange or warranty if you can unless someone else has any ideas

Only alternative left to leave it till battery drains, if you can remember the battery percentage before this happens, otherwise i am out of solutions.
A service center would be an alternative choice.

swipe or double tap to unlock

My power button is starting to fail. What ROM do you recommend that has swipe or double tap to unlock? Also, how is the battery consumption on those?
Any suggestion too in powering the phone without holding the power button? Like say holding the volume button before plugging in the charger would make it boot. Is there anything like that?
I am currently unrooted and using stock (just got updated too). Any thoughts is appreciated.

I use Hellscore, and it has swipe to lock/unlock. Quite simple to use too. And as for the power-on part, that would require rewiring the phone itself. IMHO it would be cheaper to get the faulty power button itself replaced.

Yea, I would like to have it replaced too but I'm on a long term volunteering work outside my country and I can't leave for the next 9 months, hence the question. I don't trust the courier too so yea.. Anyhow, I remember back in my myTouch 4G days after installing custom recovery it would power on whenever I plug it. It turns out as a bug on the new recovery which was quickly patch on the next version. I never thought I would want a bug on my phone this bad. Haha
Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions!
Just fix the button bro.
if you're here on XDA you probably love your N4, you should fix it, shouldn't be a very expensive fix.

If you can't pull the battery...

Slightly odd question - I have an S5 and flash ROMS. If something goes wrong and I get a boot loop or a slightly dead phone, I just pull the battery and all is well. What do you do on an S7 or S6 etc, where you can't get at the battery? I assume you don't just wait until the battery goes flat!
Looking forward to an S7 Edge when SIM free prices fall...
There's always a combination of buttons you can hold to simulate a battery pull. Think it's usually holding the power button or power + home.

Power Button + Volume Down forces a reboot.
I found this out after installing the Renovate ROM and trying to use the Gear VR. The phone is supposed to download the Oculus app on the first use however it just stops the phone from responding to any input. I would raise this as a bug in the Renovate ROM topic however I don't have enough posts it seems.
fun fact, volume down isn't needed

Er, so just power button?! I have certainly been in situations (GNex, S4, S5) where short or even very long power buttons presses had no affect; only battery pull would work.
Isnt it home, power button and volume down

This is correct, and I had a similar issue where I had to force a reboot. It's perhaps 5-10 seconds of vol down and power, and the phone will reboot, even if it is hard-crashed.

This is NOT correct. My phone got stuck on a black screen. It wouldn't unlock, wouldn't react to anything, wouldn't charge, wouldn't ADB, wouldn't do anything at all. Thinking what you think, I tried holding the power button for over 30 seconds, and it dodn't do anything. I tried a number of other combos - home+power, volume up + power, vol up + home + power. none worked until I went with vol down + power, 5 or 10 seconds later my phone was happily booting up.
Holding power can work fine if the phone isn't badly crashed. But it doesn't simulate a battery pull.

Nah, it is possible to hang the phone badly enough to require more than just the power button. Vol down + power, held down for a little bit, seems to replicate a hardware power cut.
Thanks for the reply Mr Adventure
I am fortunate that since Xmas, when I went to Resurrection Remix marshmallow, I haven't needed to pull the battery.
