Verizon dropping to 1x and ! - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have not seen any mention of anyone really having data issues. However this was my experience once I was rooted. Of course all the proper settings in networks tab. Thought maybe a bad sim as I had it for awhile and cut it for the MXP. Verizon swap no problem. Leave the store and ten minutes later it happened again. While rooted I only had gravitybox and viper installed along with kernel auditor. Uninstalled them no change. So here I am now after a factory restore and no signal drops whatsoever. About to reroot and go step by step to try and trigger again. Besides returning phone for what I think is software related is there anything else I am missing to setup after rooted that is tainting my setup. Maybe a rom would help. But not too many days left for Amazon 14 day return on cellphones. This is last resort as I love the phone. Thanks for any assistance.

Sounds like you're in LTE mode only (even though you may have it set properly in settings) so any time you lose 4G it can't drop to 3G. You need to access Phone Info and change it to LTE/CDMA auto (PRL).

It's a hidden menu that can be accessed several ways. I have a direct link to that I created in Nova launcher (widgets > activities) that I restore to any rom/phone I use. It can also be accessed from the dialer (sorry but I don't know the code to enter) or with an app (Google HTC Thunderbolt LTE On/Off app - it may no longer be in the Play store). If I'm not mistaken there's an Xposed Module that'll add it to your power menu.

Anyone know dialer code?

I will look into it. But right now I don't have any signal issues. I have installed everything but xposed and gravitybox. No issues yet.

Dialer Code:
*#*#4636#*#*
I am also having issues getting the 4g to kick over to 3g. I haven't had a chance to try this setting out yet because I have no cell service at my house.

Thanks. Will try once I notice the issue again. Now Pandora doesn't want to work but it worked before FAC restore.
Edit: works fine to get to menu. Noticed the default was something like lte, gsm, CDMA auto(prl).
Changed to setting in second post.
We shall see.

Assuming OP has the same issue I am having then it isn't in LTE only mode. The issue I'm having seems to be APN related. I went camping this passed weekend and the data connection wasn't available which shows a ! in the signal icon. If I went to the APN settings and tried a different APN then it would connect and show LTE. This is a bug similar to what I've seen on some other phones using AOSP systems like CM, etc.

I'm not sure that actually changing the APN is the issue. I think it has more to do with it resetting the data connection state. Sort of seems like a race condition because changing the APN didn't always fix it for me the first time.
I've also never seen a data issue in my hometown. It was only when I was out in the middle of nowhere.
My wife's Nexus 6 never had the issue while we were camping.

LTE/GSM/CDMA is fine. This corresponds to "Global" in the main cellular settings. It simply means it will use either GSM or CDMA depending on the sim card installed. With a Verizon SIM card it is the same as having LTE/CDMA.

Yes but I have tried those settings as well as hidden menu settings. Only one that works is LTE only mode in hidden menu. Just don't understand why all the issues on any other setting. This is first unlocked phone for me but I've never had to change these settings while running stock roms. Is there anything else that I should of done after installing sim? Or even after to get these settings to work.

How to stop network Roaming

I'm on T-mobile here in the UK and I can't seem to stop it roaming to Orange.
I don't mind roaming except when it choses Orange 2G when I have a 3G cell over the road from me on T-mobile. If I go into networks and after searching select T-mobile it will change to T-mobile but it will not stay on it.
How do you switch off network roaming?
I'm running ICS 4.04
same here
Switch off the setting in settings-> data usage-> advanced settings

Thank you for your reply but I didn't say anything about Data roaming. I need to stop it NETWORK roaming. I don't get charged for data when roaming on Orange as they are the same company in the UK.
As I said I need to stop it NETWORK roaming. Any ideas please?
Go into Settings | Wireless & Networks | More | Mobile Networks | make sure Data Roaming is unchecked.

Yes I have done that many times as said in my first post.
"If I go into networks and after searching select T-mobile it will change to T-mobile but it will not stay on it."
I don't understand why it keeps wanting to change when I have manually selected my network. Is this a ICS 4.04 bug or am I missing a roaming setting somewhere?
Ref. Data Roaming it has been turned off the whole time see screen shot
You mean national roaming ? I think that was in previous CM and only in CM, not AOSP.
So has anyone got any ideas how to stop this roaming?
I've just got home and it has roamed to Orange again, I've been home for 1 hour now and it is still on Orange even tho I have a 3G T-mobile cell over the road from me. If I manually select T-mobile it will go onto it but it doesn't want to stay on it.
I didn't have this trouble before I upgraded to ICS 4.0.4

I think you have to call T-Mobile and opt out as its NOT normal roaming(little R over signal bar) its a network specific thing

No Simultaneous Voice and Data on AT&T

My Nexus 4 on AT&T doesn't seem to be allowing simultaneous voice and data. Not sure if it's a network issue or a problem with the phone which I am only now putting through its paces.
I came from a Galaxy Nexus which worked perfect. My account provisioning has not changed and the APN is the same as with the GN. I'm getting roughly the same HSPA+ speeds as before.
Anyone else seeing problems with simultaneous voice and data?

When you say "fine" what exactly do you mean? Have you done a speed test during a call? Could give you interesting results.
I was getting the same thing on my Galaxy Nexus and now get it on my Nexus 4.
Still doesn't work on AT&T right (it's intentional) and on T-Mobile it works fine.
HOWEVER, data does not come back until a call is completed. Don't know if that's an Android bug or network limitation.
See:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1757096
check build.prop settings. can't remember which rom it was (not nexus 4), but there was a release where it was set to disable simultaneous voice and data in gsm mode. not really ever an issue since I was on wcdma, and generally don't use data while on the phone anyway..
I guess I spoke a little too soon. It was initially working and I just noticed on my last phone call I lost data again.
Immediately after rebooting the phone I was showing an active data connection (signal meter was blue) and I was able to open web pages on Google Chrome while on a phone call.
I just initiated a call during which I went to access some information and noticed that my data connection was lost (the signal meter was grey) and could not access any webpages on Chrome. After hanging up the phone (without rebooting) I made several more test calls and the simultaneous voice and data appears to be working again.
When the data was working on the call, I ran a speed test and Download was only 1.58 Mbps with Upload of only 0.09 Mbps. Off the phone, in the same location, the data speeds are 5.10 Mbps Download and 1.15 Mbps Upload.
Not sure why it appears some calls are dropping data and others are not.
Next time you're in a call and don't have data, check if you are on gsm or wcdma.

It happened again. It's odd because I never noticed the problem on the Galaxy Nexus, in fact I would praise the phone's ability to be on a phone call, look up an address in Chrome and navigate with Maps all at the same time (as recent as a couple of weeks ago).
I checked the phone status during the call with lost data and its Mobile Network Type was reporting GPRS:1.
I had data when the call first started and was only on the line for about 5 minutes when I checked and data was disconnected again.
It sounds like there's a build.prop setting that's disallowing simultaneous voice and data over GSM. When you have data, you're connected via umts/hspa, but when it falls back to gsm during the call, data goes away.
look for ro.ril.enable.dtm in build.prop
don't know if there's a rcdata for these devices
If you have generatlly good hspa coverage, try setting the phone to wcdma only for testing purposes. See if it still loses data during a call

This is exactly the behavior I see. Sometimes it doesn't drop data. Other times it drops data soon after a call. But even when it doesn't drop data it's excruciatingly slow. I remember being able to take a photo and upload it in a reasonable amount of time. Now it takes like 30 minutes - if you're lucky enough for data not to drop.
I'm playing around with a T-Mobile SIM and when I'm in a good T-Mobile area it kills AT&T. Unfortunately coverage isn't that great.
Again, regardless of carrier, it doesn't ever regain a data connection on a call. It's a one way street to disconnectedness.

I checked the build.prop file and did not find ro.ril.enable.dtm. If there was a build.prop setting disallowing simultaneous voice and data wouldn't it always prevent simultaneous voice and data?
The issue I'm seeing is sporadic. In fact, I have a 3G Microcell at home and seem to maintain data connection throughout calls.
This is pretty frustrating. I've tried a different APN and it's still dropping data during a call. It seems to be happening on every call.
EDIT: So I've forced WCDMA Only and it seems to be working (data is available while on a call). I'll continue to monitor.

I haven't been able to get voice + data at all... not on the HSPA+ apn, nor the pta apn... It's quite frustrating. (seems like it worked on my GNex just fine).
Running on WCDMA only does allow for simultaneous voice and data to work, unfortunately it also leads to constant dropped calls. It's as if the pipe just isn't big enough and won't allow a call and data if it's more than EDGE. I'm suspecting this has something to do with how LG is managing the network connection since my Galaxy Nexus didn't experience this at all, same SIM card, same APN, same location.
I'm having the exact same issue. I've tried WAP.cingular and phone APN's and had a screaming match with AT&T about this.
Still no resolution.
When I start a call, I have a data connection for about 1-2 minutes before it eventually drops.

Yup, this is precisely what I experience on AT&T. Same location. I've been trying to find someone with an iPhone on AT&T but can't. I'd love to see how their firmware handles this. That would at least give me an idea of whether Google (+Samsung+LG) can fix this or whether we have no hope because AT&T's network is boned. Intentionally or not.
Since AT&T is throttling data during a call I imagine this is intentional on their end.

I don't believe this is an AT&T issue. My wife has my old Galaxy Nexus and her phone has no problems doing simultaneous voice and data on AT&T. This seems to be an LG issue with how they manage the radios.

Yeah just tried my GNex with everything identical. No issues stayed on a call for 10 mins and data never dropped. I know there's been a lot lately on XDA about Fast Dormancy. The Optimus G (essentially same hardware wise) had Fast Dormancy on it and someone on XDA just released a tool to disable it.
If anyone knows more about FD, please chime in if this could be the reason.

Is there a way to disable 3G data? I'm on the edge of a LTE network and its perfectly fine 600kb/s but It keeps switching back to 3G which only is 80kb/s and I'm about to chuck my phone.
I know LTE is strong enough to be constant, its just the phone picking the best available connection, which is very inconvenient for tethering. I switch my Airplane mode on and off and get LTE for about 5 mins.
For sprint one of the menu's is ##data## (or ##3282##) Is this the menu you'd use to access LTE only settings?
Anyone able to get the international (korean) version working on t-mobile lte?
I move around a lot, and I'm all about no contract pre-paid plans so I want a GSM phone that could get on att and tmobile bands. I currently have a Note 2 (originally on att) that was rooted to enable tmobile lte.

I believe the Tmo LTE version is the D851. Here's my screen.
Is there any way to do this so that LTE is enabled automatically on reboot?

Have you found out how to go on HSDPA instead of 4g LTE? I also have the at&t model.

Can you force 3g

My office is at my home. Our area has very poor sevice. I had to get a range extender from Verizon since it is so bad. I have no need for 4g since i have good wireless internet. I don't want to drain the battery with the phone constantly looking for 4g. Does the phone have a setting to force 3g or does anyone know if one of the toggle widgets will work?
That is one of the things i didn't like about my LG G2. You could not turn off 4g. Battery life on it is excellent on it despite the issue.

Isn't there a dialer menu to toggle this? Would the dialer codes for the Nexus 6 work for this one as well, being made by Motorola and all.

No data is lost.
Testing menu dialer code:

That's the problem I had with the G2. There was no setting on my Verizon phone to force it. No widgets would work with it. To my knowledge no one ever found a way to do it. Can anyone confirm we can do this on the Pure with Verizon service.
Thanks,
Also on Verizon and would love a way to force it off 4G at the area by my work which is where a bunch of medical centers are the 4G bandwidth is <1MB and often internet cuts in even with good signal. The issue is simple overcrowding of their local capacity. When I had my OG droid which used CDMA I had no issues with performance.
I think we are going to be finding more users looking for this so hopefully there will be a hack or an update to allow for this!

You can force it on LG devices (tested on both G2 and G3). Provided that your device has the Verizon Hidden Menu apk (custom ROMs have it, might not be present on stock, I don't remember), run the following in a terminal app: am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN -n com.lge.VerizonHiddenMenu/com.lge.VerizonHiddenMenu.systemSelection.SystemSelection
It'll pop up a menu selection that lets you choose between the various network modes: CDMA+LTE/EVDO Auto (2G, 3G, and 4G), LTE Only (just 4G), EVDO only (just 3G), CDMA w/o EVDO (just 2G), and CDMA w/ EVDO (2G+3G). There's also some GSM/WCDMA options in there.
No clue if something similar exists for the Pure, but just thought I should point that out.
I downloaded the LTE OnOff app for HTC Thunderbolt today and can confirm that it does work. I set it to CDMA auto (PRL) and the phone is staying in 3g.
I have a network extender at home on Verizon. My old S4 would connect to the extender. After 2 days, my MPXE has not connected. I just moved the SIM from the S4 to the MPXE.
Do I need to call Verizon and register my phone with them?
Any suggestions?
I did not have to contact Verizon. DIAL #48 to see if you are connected. I just had to force 3g so my X would not constantly try to connect to 4g. You dont get the little house on this phone, so you might actually be connected.

I use the app call Network Signal Pro which tells me what kind of cellular signal is being used. It reports LTE, but has low signal strength.
With my old phone, when I was connected to the Net Extender I would hear a beep before the call rings thru. the Net Signal Pro would also report "network extender" as the network type.
What does #48 do to the phone?
I think in the secret menu you can force it to CDMA only. I saw it but for me I chose lte/CDMA I usually have lte everywhere. But yes there is option to set it to CDMA only

Radio Issues

Anyone else noticing an issue where you lose LTE in an overwhelmingly LTE area and it sticks on 3G? I have to use airplane mode to bump the radio back to 4G. This has been happening ever since I've had the phone. I'm curious if its just my area or if others are experiencing the same problem and if they've been able to fix it, what did you do? I have my MSL and I haven't taken the update so I am still able to edit my APN settings.

It doesnt happen to me. Whenever I dont have LTE is due to low coverage, especially when driving.

I have the same issue. The only thing that helps me is when i use it as hot spot is I mount it on my satellite receiver (pointing to signal direction). with a better signal it doesn't switch. I noticed with about 20% strength jump to 3G but my 3G is weaker and slower...
I have not experienced that problem.

Mine really prefers LTE and rarely see it on 3G. If it does it's fairly quick to go back. I actually think it's too touchy it will hang on to a crap band 41 signal rather than a good 25 or 26 signal. A lot is of course going to depend on your area but I would try a radio reset.
Only time mine sticks is if im updating something or using data it wont switch back unless i move to another location outside of 3g or after the download

During this past week I lost all data connectivity. I was in a strong signal area where I have never seen a problem before. The only thing that looked wrong was there was no strength of signal indicator. My data signal has been set on automatic since I've had the phone. I changed it to LTE CMDA, the phone reset, and the problem disappeared.
Has anyone else had a similar problem?

I had a problem over the weekend. I was in an area with no Sprint signal at all, and when I got back home realized my phone hadn't reconnected to Spring. I ended up having to reboot, then I got several messages and emails that had been pending.

I was going to suggest this action. Set your network type from automatic to lte/cdma. Then reboot. You may also want to run a profile and prl update. Last ditch you may want to run the HFA again. Usually just changing the network type will suffice.
