I have the kindle fire hdx (thor) and i have successfully downgraded the os to 3.2.8 and then upgraded it to the 4.5.2 to be rooted. I do not know how to root and install nexus to it and was hoping that there is an in depth tutorial that i could follow. I have looked for one but cannot find one. If anyone could help me or point me in the right direction i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance guys/gals!! Also if it is possible to do with 4.5.5 id rather do that to maintain the most recent update but to be honest i dont know the difference between the os's. I have many apple products that i have jailbroken and customized but this will be my first with kindle/android. I here that the rewards are substantial after rooting.

@Davey126 gave a good overview here, so read all the info and ask before you brick your HDX! If you don't follow the procedure 100% correctly, you will brick your HDX! @tropicallazerbeams also linked to YouTube videos about Safestrap usage and installation of custom ROMs. Regarding the ROMs, read the installation requirements carefully! Not all ROMs are Safestrap v4 compatible (e.g. CM12 and SlimLP which require an unlocked bootloader).
Note that you must keep WLAN off/flight mode active during the down-/and-then-update procedure, getting updated by Amazon by OTA will brick your HDX!
I see you're on 4.5.2 already? You can skip the related info then, and go directly to the rooting with Kingroot.
Kingroot requires a short internet connection, so just enable it to root, and disable right after success! Otherwise you will get updated to 4.5.5. and have to do the whole down- and upgrade process again, with all the risks!
After successful rooting you can install Safestrap v4 and use eiter Nexus or CM11. Now while CM11 works in secondary slots it is recommended to use the stock slot due to higher battery usage of secondary slots (Nexus works in the stock slot only - WLAN won't work in secondary slots). Do NOT restore a backup of a secondary slot to the stock slot! This will overwrite Safestrap files and will brick the HDX!
Again: any questions please ask first.

sorry

Hi, I just got a new Kindle HDX 7, sơ could you help me to provide the step I should take to install custom ROM.
This is what I read so far:
1- Rollback to 3.2.8
2- Root
3- Unlock bootloader
4- Install TWRP
5- Backup
6- Flash Custom Rom
is that correct?
thanks

Yes. Take time reading through the forums to understand procedures, cautions and risks. Particularly around the 3.2.8 rollback. If the device takes an OTA update while on 3.2.8 it will hard brick with no known recovery. Keep WiFi off (and airplane/flight mode engaged) except for brief intervals (15-30 sec max) while securing root. See associated threads for more detail.

Don't know anything about the unsafe method, never tried it. Try the full routine again, but don't skip anything (can't think why you'd do that ???), if all goes well you should have a rooted system (Amazon update proofed, so you don't lose root) + TWRP recovery. --- J.

Thanks for answer, I just follow tue guide to using safetrap and installed Fire Nexus successfully, as what sd_shadow wrote in his post, seem like those has firmware 4.5.2 has to downgrade, then upgrade the root, install safetraps... And I has succesfully follow that guide.
Although, I want to know that If I can install twrp, unlock bootloader and flash other custom ROM, cause I would like to get MM on HDX
Again, thanks for reading and answering my questions

Yes, you can do all these things. If Safestrap v4 is currently installed the device is rooted; no need to rollback. Details are in the various forum threads; I don't propose to summarize and duplicate here. Start with the thread below. Ask specific questions as needed.
Unlocking is not for the faint of heart and involves more challenges than Safestrap. However, it is not dangerous to try as failed unlock attempt does not put your device or its contents at risk. Good luck!

Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 3rd Generation
Please advice me how to install a full Android System.

My understanding is that this method has been deemed dangerous and surpassed via newer methods like like placing the device in bulk mode and writing directly to the presented partition. If that is correct, remove the sticky?

7" HDX - No Fire OS 5 - Decisions to be made

Hi all,
For those of us who's hopes have been dashed, fire OS 5 is leaving us in it's dust.
3rd gen 7" HDX's - I have one lying here - never been rooted or modified thus far.
What advice would members give. What options do I have other than selling it on or dumping it?
Is it time to return it for store credit (had 2 yr warranty - freezes occasionally) or are there roms out there that make it worth keeping?
I am a newbie - and it's the news that we are to be denied this update that is the cause of these questions.
I think many owners will be looking for options - and will really benefit from a discussion on this.
Any views/ideas/comments welcome.

Best option (IMO) is a rollback to 4.5.2 (via 3.2.8), root, install Safestrap v4 and then flash CM11 or Nexus v4 replacing FireOS v4. Yields a 'pure' android tablet with high end specs and full access to the Play Store. Trumps FireOS 5 but a wide margin which I like too. Possible other Safestrap compatible roms might become available now the FireOS upgrade path is known.
I suspect that sending out the message that the 7" HDX 3rd gen will be getting the fire OS 5 update, then apologising and saying 'actually it won't' - will help (accidentally of course) drive sales of newer units.
Currently my device says - OS firmware 4.5.5.
I have heard that a 4.5.5.1 update has been released. Some are speculating it could be an anti-rollback update - in which case rooting could get much more difficult.
For those of us just getting to grips with the situation - how do we block OTA update to 4.5.5.1. If it has already been downloaded awaiting a reboot to install, how can we block that too?

You can not effectively block OTA updates without rooting which requires a modestly complex (and risky) rollback to 3.2.8 followed by an upgrade to 4.5.2. Safestrap v4 and two non-FireOS roms are also options once on 4.5.2.
I say 'effectively' as there are other methods for holding back OTAs such as IP address blocking or temporarily stopping services via clever use of adb commands on unrooted devices. Neither is convenient or 100% effective.
If an update has been downloaded and waiting to install you *may* be able to see and erase it from internal storage when you device is tethered to a host. Look for a. bin file containing the word 'update'.
Really appreciate the input.
Can I please ask for a list of ip's to block.
We can enter them into our router ip blocking fields.

Amazon rotates IPs. That's why IP blocking is only a temporary solution. I have long since lost track of what IPs are currently being used to distribute updates.
BTW - IP rotation is a common load balancing technique. It has nothing to do with trying to circumvent user blocks.
I would now update to 4.5.5.1, root with Kingroot, add Safestrap 4.01, and load the stable Nexus 4.05 rom. that is what I did with my 7" hdx. all can be done within minutes (just be sure to read over the forums for complete instruction if you have not custom rom'd before). runs buttery smooth and brings new life to an awesome tablet. these dev's here are amazing and willing to share their talents for the community.
I am other thor owners - really appreciate the input on this thread.
It's clear that the community suggest putting a custom rom on this device - since amazon have retired it.
For those of us who are newbies:
1. Which rom is seen as the most appropriate for this device (stability / security).
2. What functions/abilities would we have to give up (e.g screen mirroring or so on) by moving to a custom rom (ignore mayday)?

At present the only (Safestrap v4 compatible) rom choices are CM11 and Nexus v4. Both are mature, feature complete and stable. No Lollipop or Marshmallow variants. You gain much a give up little moving away from FireOS v4 as most proprietary functionality can be duplicated via official Amazon apps. Kindle book lending, Amazon's take on parental controls and Mayday are the only capabilities that can't be immediately duplicated. If dissatisfied you can always return to FireOS.

No. All HDX 7" models (thor) are 3rd gen which will not receive an automatic update to FireOS v5. Whether v5 it can be adapted to run on 3rd gen devices is unknown. Source has only been recently released. Since the bootloader remains locked on the vast majority of HDX devices a 'helper' environment such as Safestrap will be needed. None exist as of this writing.

firmware for 3rd gen HDX 8.9

I have this Fire HDX 8.9 3rd gen https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BYHTK5Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I recently tried to start Optimum app for tv viewing and it claims it no longer works on my OS version and doesn't provide any other information. I have Fire OS 4.5.2 from December 13, 2014. It was rooted previously with TWRP, but I haven't done anything since then. I think I need to get to 5, but does the 3rd gen HD 8 work or support it? Any recommendations on firmware?
edit
I see that's there's other Kindle forums, but the server keeps timing out on me trying to list them.

Looks like your device doesn't support Fire OS v5
Since you have TWRP, you can flash one of many ROMs (up to Nougat) found here:

To block OTA Updates
Can you simply move the DeviceSoftwareOTA, SystemUpdatesUI, DeviceSoftwareOTAContracts and DeviceSoftwareOTAIdleOverride folder in /system/priv-app/ directory to /storage/emulated/0/ internal storage directory.
Or, can you delete the system app folder, DeviceSoftwareOTA, SystemUpdatesUI, DeviceSoftwareOTAContracts and DeviceSoftwareOTAIdleOverride permanently.

Hi there,
I've got a Amazon Fire HD 8 7th gen running Fire OS 5.6.8.0 which I'm trying to downgrade and to attempt to root and flash TWRP with no luck. Does anyone knows a guide to get it rooted or get rid of the Amazon OS and install a regular Android version?
Thank you in advance!

This is not going to work for lem2405 as they provide the hardware and fw version of 5.6.8.0. The link you provided states: "Fire HD 8 7th gen (2017) -- up to Fire OS 5.6.4.0 build 636558520 only" clearly will not provide a solution.
Hey guys,
any update on the issue? My HD10 also runs on 5.6.8.0 and I don't want to brick it. Is the limitation "up to Fire OS 5.6.4.0 build 636558520 only" still valid?

In that thread, the first post says "NOTE: If you are on a firmware newer than 5.6.4.0, a downgrade is necessary, this requires bricking the device temporarily. (The screen won't come on at all)"
after downgrading the firmware through bricking, multiple people have reported in that thread of success un-lock of 5.6.8.0. i suggest reading the last few pages; starting from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/unlock-root-twrp-unbrick-fire-hd-8-2017-douglas.3962846/page-32
Thank you, I just saw this thread and thought, it's over after a certain fw-version. I'm gonna read the mentioned pages and try to downgrade first.

BEFORE doing the full bootloader unlock, plz note there could be other way to root access (no TWRP or custom rom though) like this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/tut-root-hd10-2017-hd8-2016-2017-easy-supersu.3726443/ or this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/hd-10-2017-offline-rooting.3734860/
check around as HD10 2017 got hacked for root access very early! good luck!

How exactly would you downgrade through bricking?

A Custom ROM for Fire HD 8 (KFGIWI) 2016

Greetings and Salutations!
I have an Amazon Fire HD 8 (KFGIWI) a.k.a. 6th Generation tablet and I've been recently considering root/unlock in order to install a custom ROM. With no TWRP and/or LineageOS support for the device it's clear my options are limited. I was following this thread with interest
[discontinued][ROM][unlocked][ford, austin] Fire Nexus ROM [26 MAY 2019] but it would seem this thread has since been locked as the developer has moved on to other projects.
I don't see any recent posts in this forum about this device. Has no one managed to "crack" the 6th Generation Fire? Any success stories? I'm about to pay to have someone root/unlock my device for me.. but only if I can get something even as unrecent as Android 7
Please, indulge me with your Two Cents
I too have just picked up a 2016 HD 8 hoping to root/install lineageos, but have seemingly hit the brick wall that it isn't possible for some reason...?!
Anyone able to shed any light on this? Have seen success with the 2015 and 2018 versions... why is this one such a problem?

It's possible to get root, but there's no way to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom ROM that I know of. So, you can do stuff like disable amazon apps including the launcher (so the home button will use your own favorite launcher) and try to make the best of what there is on FireOS, but it's an ancient android version with a lot of crap on it, and it's getting less useful by the day. I would love it if I could make mine more useful. It really is tempting to just sell it and get a different year's version that is more hackable, but part of me doesn't even want to ever buy an Amazon tablet again. Nothing but trouble from these things.
For root, use these.

It is notably missing the line for the launcher, though. If you've got something like OpenLauncher installed, additionally do this:
`pm disable com.amazon.firelauncher`
I recommend getting additional apps from F-Droid rather than adding Google apps and services. This thing has enough spyware on it as it is.

I was looking for a way to install a new home and app launcher and clean out the Amazon trash. $zAdding google playas well. But I don't have a laptop or computer. The only other device I have is a Motorola Moto g stylus. So I would need to do it all by either APK files or something. Please let me know what my choices are
