Pumpkin Stereo Wifi connection issues - Please Help - Android Head-Units

Hello! I purchased a Pumpkin 6.95 Inch Quad-core Android 4.4 Kitkat Double Din stereo (RK3188 Cortex A9 Quad Core 1.6GHz RAM: DDR3 1GB Nand Memory: 8GB).
I have been having a lot of issues with the wifi connection. I use a Verizon Jetpack MiFi 5510L for my wifi. The stereo finds the jetpack but when I click connect it just hangs or sometimes it says connecting and then nothing happens. Also sometimes it will say the Jetpack is not within range. I have had it connect a couple times flawlessly but most of the time it doesn't want to connect which is really throwing me off as to what the problem might be.
Observation - Pumpkin sent me an update for the unit which I installed. Once installed I was able to connect to the stereo. When I went to install my apps, google requests that I update its services in order to install the apps. When I did this I noticed that the wifi signal bars colors had changed. When you swipe the top of the screen you get those options for "speed, wifi, settings, amp etc.", the wifi bars were orange originally when connected. After google services update, the wifi bars are now white. I have been able to connect to the wifi after the google service update but not 100% of the time. Im wondering if I should not do the update but then I wont be able to take advantage of the good play services. This is just an observation I have noticed when trying to troubleshoot.
Hopefully someone has had some what of the same experience as I had who knows the answer to this. Really enjoy the stereo but the wifi working would make it awesome.
Thanks

Unfortunately these units just have horrible wifi, and I have found nothing that will fix it. There is a mention of some fix involving adding a fan but that isnt something I want or really can do.
FYI the orange is when you have lost internet connection due to weak wifi connection. ( you can and will still loss/not have connection when its white but won't be because of weak wifi signal but lame radio in unit)
Sorry

Are there any other units i can look into that have good wifi capabilities?

After I modded the wifi antenna cable in my carjoying unit with an actual jack, so I can could use any external wifi antenna I wanted, the wifi on my carjoying.com unit is at least as good or better than my Samsung Galaxy S4. And before doing the mod with the wifi coax just sticking out the back, is was not really that bad to begin with and almost as good as the Galaxy.
The main benefit of using an external antenna is that you can use some coax and move the antenna out of the dash so its not getting blocked.

Bought a joying. Hoping this won't have the issue I have been having. Thanks for the info. If anyone wants to buy a pumpkin, let me know.

Did a firmware update which was provided by Xtrons support, and also there's an issue with Tasker if you have Tasker automatically start your hotspot when it detects your phone connecting to the unit's bluetooth. You need to install an additional Tasker plugin to fix this, it's called "Nougat+ Tasker Tethering Control".
I have the same unit. Is there a way to prevent all apps from closing when the unit goes into sleep mode?

I think I will put all apps I want to run on startup on the first tab then. Even tasker doesn't boot at startup/wake up.
Which firmware do you run now?
How good is this unit?
Pros and cons?
I'm thinking on putting this one on a LEON MK2 2007

I am pretty glad about this unit. Android has so much more options and capabilities than my older RNS510 unit.
Some cons that I have experienced is that the unit sometimes restarts itself. I am not sure yet what causes that.
And sometimes when I open multiple apps in a short period of time the unit freezes. The only way I got it to restart is to push the power button for +- 10 seconds.
In the 1 or 2 months that I have this unit, this only occcured 2 or 3 times.
One small little thing is that I wanted to use TomTom Navigation but the 3D view shows a blanco map with only the street names. So I just use Google Maps now.
And I found it very hard to get a decent reception with the DAB+ Antenna from Xtrons.
Overall I am glad with the unit. It is definitely an upgrade compared to my older version of the RNS510.
This unit responds very quickly and has a lot of options.
Let us know what your choice will be!
I'm thinking of getting one of these. What is the boot time?

If you really want to improve your DAB+ you got to find your antenna amplifier in your car and it should look like this... https://www.kufatec.de/shop/media/images/popup/DAB-Antennensplitter-fuer-VW-Golf-7.jpg it fits almost in every Volkswagen/Audi/Seat or Skoda
If so, you have to swap your FM amplifier with a DAB+/FM amplifier, i know Calearo ain't cheap but is european made and it works really well in my car, and i had to install a sharkfin antenna to receive DAB+ and GPS because i had no other option. (sorry for the many adjusted posts, technical problems)
Want to upgrade my android 4.4 MTCB - I use Tomtom as navigation. The PB88UNVP is interesting as is had 4GB RAM. I've read android 8 units have problems with the 3D navigation of Tomtom. Is there a known fix for Tomtom, or is it possible to install Android 7 on this device (don't know if there's a (custom) ROM that works with this device).
ok, got a PB88UNVP. Tomtom - no 3D navigation. Will use an other navigation app.
Unit works fine, but the WIFI connection is not reliable. When waking up, the unit tries to connect to a access point. Sometimes that functions without any problems, but other times it doesn't find any access points (while I know there are). Turning wifi on or off does not help. From time to time, the wifi can't be turned on or off (seems to be frozen on the on/off toggle switch).
I like the unit, bit the wifi problem is a big problem for me. Is this a known bug / problem with this or other devices?

yes getting the same problem on Xtrons PE88jccpl (Android 8, Octa Core) sometimes the wifi connects perfectly but other times getting authenticating, authentication errors. Also, having problems with the speed when its connected it starts out fast and perfect but slows down to .2 to .3 mbps after a couple of minutes. Xtrons support sent me a link to update and I updated both MCU and android but still getting issues. (I put the img and update.zip on a usb stick and once I inserted it asked if I wanted to update) Not sure if I am supposed to wipe the device after updating android

Thanks for your reaction. I also received the download link for this update. MCU 2.88_3 and Android image with build date 20180703.
I installed this update this morning. Checked the wipe everything' option to be sure to have a clean install.
Had the wifi not connecting 2 times today with the new update
I've not noticed the speed collapsing. I did download navigation maps (couple of GB) without problems. When the Wifi does function it functions well, the next time the system wakes up from sleep it's an about 50% chance it functions.
Have you tried downloading the speed test app to test?

[Joying Intel] Hardware Antenna Mod

I got my 10.1" unit and decided I was going to do something about the abysmal wireless reception these units have (I set up a WAP in my garage next to my car because it couldn't get a good signal to the router on the other side of the wall for my 7" unit). I connected up my new HU to power and tested, sure enough the wireless reception was garbage. I decided to fix that.
I popped off the lid, de-soldered the existing excuse for an antenna, and replaced it with a pigtail I had laying around. The pigtail was intended to be used in a desktop using a mini pcie card in it, so I chopped the connector off the end and stripped it down in similar fashion to the OE cable. I popped the hole next to the GPS antenna out with a screwdriver and the new RSMA connector fit perfectly. I put a reasonably large antenna on the unit and not only could I see the router from a house on the other side of the street and down a plot, but I was able to connect and pull internet through it.
I could put a smaller antenna on the connector and install it as is, but I intend to use an extension cable like this to get better signal from somewhere besides the radio slot of my car.
Next up: Heatsinks and a fan!
You got my hopes up there. Thought you were going to talk about the RADIO reception.
Unfortunately, the only thing I can imagine needing the wifi for is for hooking up an rpi I use for dashcam at a distance of 2 feet.

I used extension cable from the head unit to under my fibreglass roof on my campervan and then from the extension cable, wired 8 metres long cable running under the roof.
Now I get much better reception with that than with my decorational amplified shark fin antenna Both AM and FM pull now weaker stations.
Unless I am mistaken this will improve bluetooth reception (usually they share an antenna and are in the same chip). There have been times when my phone has been passed to someone in the back seat and bluetooth audio started cutting out. For radio reception you may consider some kind of FM pre-amp? I have never used one, and generally broadcast radio is a last resort for me (commercials can be atrocious where I live, sometimes I prefer silence...), but it may help you.
Brilliant idea. I use the WiFi to connect to a USB 3G dongle for Waze & Google maps traffic data, and the wifi is terrible even with the dongle 2-3 feet from the head unit. Already done my fan mod, so wifi antenna will be next.
BTW bluetooth is also 2.4GHz so make sense to share the antenna. Home or office wifi is often the reason why phone headsets don't work well in these environments, especially with multiple access points not correctly configured.

Which 3g dongle are you using?
It's similar to this one. I only have 500MB VirginMedia Data SIM for £5 per month, so didn't bother with 4G dongle. This is plenty for Waze Traffic !!

Nice modification dude! That's actually pretty cool. I'm pretty sure that this should also improve the bluetooth reception of the unit. Have you noticed any difference in that?
Thanks for sharing! :good::good:

Odd, mine pulls signal from my neighborhood, and I can connect in my separated garage through three wall. I haven't done any modification to it.

I think they have bad quality control in their factory.
I have a Sofia 3GR model with good WiFi reception. Now I have a PX5 with very bad WiFi reception. I put them next to each other and the PX5 is just terrible compared to the Sofia 3GR.
So it seems to vary per unit: again, bad quality control.
Maybe it is the soldering itself, or some damaging heat effect from the soldering or bad connections? Who knows.

Eonon GA9153A (PX5 - ADDING 5Ghz Dongle?

Hello:
This Eonon GA9153A officially only supports 2.4ghz wifi - which is... ok.
Is there any possibility of adding a compabitble USB 5ghz dongle to it - I'm aware of the driver issue with Android, etc. -
Just wondering if there might be a plug and play option out there buy?
I'm running the Sprint Drive Hotspot ODB2 dongle (via a splitter) and it's ok - slow - on the HU - compared to my Pixel 4 or even the iPhone 11 (work phone) when I connect to the Hotspot to test - seems the bottle neck is the HU... and also would like to be able to connect to 5ghz network? - i.e like in my garage..etc.
Thanks!
I doubt you'll see much of a speed increase between 2.4 and 5GHz, unless 2.4GHz is crowded in your area. But that is then only an issue when you are stationary.
Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk
DC is a crowded spectrum stationary or otherwise. However even on 2.4 it’s very very slow compared to other devices ther I can connect on this ODB hotspot. 40-60 (with higher bursts) down for those devices to 2 - 5 down only on the HU.
Perhaps the location of the WiFi antenna dongle of the Eonon may be a factor? I have the same unit, but haven't run any speed tests yet. Regular stuff like Spotify streaming and using Google Maps seems to work fine. I am not looking to stream 4K Netflix, so whatever the bandwidth, it suits my needs.
P.S.: I am using a Netgear AC791L hotspot with a Google Fi data SIM. The hotspot is resting in the center console and the Eonon WiFi antenna sits in the glove compartment.
Also ensure the WiFi antenna is fastened tightly to the HU.

Nope. the antenna is external - and it's vertical per the polarity of the antenna type.
I've tried other antennas - it's just poor performance. Same results with a similar Android HU - however otherwise that one is fine - hardware speed, etc, (it's on 2GB of RAM.)
Eonon has said that the internal antenna doesn't support 5ghz.. and well, the 2.4 isn't that great - Youtube music, Spotify, XM, etc set at high quality kills it. Normal is a tad better, but not much.
BT from my Pixel 4 or iphone works flawless at the higher bitrates - either on cell or via the hotspot connection as a test.... So it's def the radio.
NOTE: the radio stumbles when running split screen apps - it simply stutters, stumbles, and become very very slow - To the point WAZE / or other maps in split screen w/ an audio app get's terrible - quickly.
Again, the 2GB non PX5 Android HU I have putters right along, fine as can be... Technically, a non name brand Chinese - but aren't they all?
I'm going to pick up a Pioneer or like Andriod name brand - the Eonon was $225 +/- - so no big deal. I just want decent performance.
My experience with the exact same unit is more positive (as I mentioned in response to one of your other threads). I had ordered both this unit we are taking about here, but also the Android 9/2GB unit from Eonon. The latter had lots of lag just regularly switching between apps and performing actions. So I returned the Android 9/2GB unit and kept this Android 8/4GB unit. Split screen works fine, as far as my tests with Google Maps and the radio app go. Haven't tried Waze yet, as I prefer GMaps with lane assist. And everything is rather fluid without lag.
Eonon did offer me a software and MCU update when I complained about some static noise issue (see my response in your other thread on this issue), which I didn't yet try, but perhaps they can help you with an update as well, or you can try rooting it and put a different rom on there. If you do that, I'd love to hear your steps and results.
Maybe apps like Greenify help, too. I use that on my Android phone but haven't tried on the HU yet.

WiFi issues and static noise on Chinese Multimedia Dicola - PX6 RK3399

Hi all,
I have installed Chinese multimedia - Dicola on my Audi Q5 2009
PX6 RK3399
MCUVer: 415175bLZH-Q5-AL-7-190817[170325]
FrameworkVer: 9 PQ2A. 190305.002
Android: 9; RAM 4GB; Resolution: 1024x600
At this point it has two major issues that I'm really trying to sort out:
1. WiFi very often is not connecting to the hotspot. It shows the WiFi icon for a second but it dissapears and device is not connected. I was told that this is known issue with WiFi unable to connect after standby.
2. Multimedia is connected on the AUX but I have constant static noise in the background which is very unpleasant. Do you know what can be the issue? The Multimedia is connected pretty straight forward in the AUX socket.
I was hoping that I can install the custom rom by Malaysk for V9, but it turns out that his firmware is not compatible with my multimedia. Do you know if there are any other custom roms that I can install?
Or do you know if there is any fix for the WIFI that I can try on the current rom?
p.s. The seller Dicola (in Ali-express) are totally inadequate, they barely respond to my messages and when they do, they write nonsense.
Thank you
Ok, I have an update.
The seller sent me updated rom but I have not installed it yet.
On the WiFi issue:
I got 4G USB dongle, connected it to the USB and it was immediately recognized by the Android and set it asLAN automatically. It is working very well and in fact its much better with 4G dongle so I dont have to activate each time the hotspot on my iphone. One of the issue I noticed is that after I turn off the car for a while it doesn't recognizes the USB dongle immediately so I had to unplug and plug it back in. But I have tested this only once so will have to dig deeper.
Static noice issue update:
I was able to isolate it, so there is static only when the engine is on. As soon as I turn the engine off, the static background noose goes away. Do you think this is ground issue and I have to ground the multimedia on the chassis?
Thanks
I have the PX6 with the same noise issue (turnon wifi and noise). After some research, I will change the wifi antenna and try to find some luck.
I have only GPS antenna, not sure if the wifi is using the same antenna. I will try to ground the multimedia to the chassis and see if there is any difference.
Overall the software of the Multimedia is crap. I'm thinking of upgrading it to Malaysk's custom ROM for Andorid 9
What is your opinion, do you think there is a possibility to brick the unit?

Android head unit NO WIFI

Hi.
I recently bought a 9210S android head unit.
The wifi is SHOCKINGLY bad. It wont pick up any close wifi and to connect it to my phones hotspot wifi, the phone litrally has to be leaning againt the unit and is extremely slow. It has done this since new (2 months)
I have taken the radio apart to look at the circuit board to see if there is an obvious wifi antenna but cant find it. I have attached the photos of the board, could someone pinpoint the wifi chip or antenna on it? Many thanks.
Failing that, can I connect some other wifi device to it like a USB wifi adapter (which I have) but how do I install drivers onto an Android unit?
Daz.
