Location mode sets to High Accuracy automatically, after I change it to GPS ONLY? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
So I am trying to setup my note 4 to be on GPS only mode all the time. But everytime I turn off and turn on location, it goes back to High accuracy mode.
How do I make it stick to GPS only mode?
Thanks.

This is "normal." Every time you turn location on, it defaults to high accuracy and you must change the settings to power saving. If you turn location off and on again, it will default again.
I hate it too. It's annoying as heck, but it's a stupid Android problem and not the Note 4. My old phone did it on Kitkat too, and it was an LG.
The good news is that you can get to the location settings quickly by holding the location toggle in the quick settings pull down. Unfortunately, you'll have to go to the settings everyone you turn location on, or just keep location on or off.
My phone isn't really rootable, but MAYBE there's some sort of trick you can do if rooted. If so, I hope someone can help you more.

same issue on my s5 and its damn annoying.
I posted a request in apps section to see if a dev can make a xposed module to fix it, but I am going to see if I can fix with tasker, as tasker can do cool things like toggle settings after a mode is activated.

Go into Settings -> Location and you be able to adjust the GPS connection settings there.

that only works until you disable it, then it changes again when turning back on

Just came across this INSANITY, think it's because I installed (and promptly uninstalled!) the weather.com app. It changed the settings, I'll try with clearing the cache:
Code:
https://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-note-3/502397-how-do-i-stop-my-location-mode-changing-high-accuracy.html
Why isn't this on the Android web site and first result in Google. It's like they WANT everyone to suffer. I can't rage here, but believe me I'm cussing right now.

Genius, got it!.. It was one of the Google apps!!
Rebooted to Safe Mode (probably irrelevant ) & cleared the data - on several Google services, dunno which is the culprit - and voila!
On Reboot, switching Location back on presented me with the dialog to NOT have High accuracy; yes, lol!
Going to try and add that screenshot to the post here. =)

Well, this is officially the stupidest thing Google/Android have ever done. And it's been around for a while, as I see. It is still there on Marshmallow ... how fantastic. Yep, they do wanna troll you and own you ... that we get.
Here's a possible fix for rooted phones - https://csullender.com/blog/2014/01/26/automatic-high-accuracy-android-location/ just revert the procedure somewhat and make sure that Tasker tells Maps (or whatever nav app you use) to default to GPS off which is “battery saving” mode in Secure Settings.
This is insanely retarded ...

GPS Battery bug

Hi all, got my Note 3 Thursday and I love it, came from a Z1 and what I love the most is the battery life. I'm a pretty heavy user and so far I'm getting at least 6hrs screen on which is awesome for me!
Anyway I noticed today that even though my GPS hasn't been on its showing on in battery stats

but when I did turn the GPS on it shows its off, it's like it's inverted strangely....rebooted phone still same.
I will back up and factory reset it tomorrow, but wanted to check if anyone else had this before, I did search but nothing came up. BTW I'm stock unrooted.

A colleague of mine is having same problem but with wifi, it's inverted....I will point out though it doesn't seem to have an effect on battery life. Must be a visual bug.

Edit: mine wasn't inverting like yours, just showing the gps on when it was off.
I isolated this down to google maps, I didn't notice a drop in battery, but It bugged me none the less. Once location was blocked in Xprivacy it stopped reporting GPS-on in the battery stats. This might fix it: Try temporarily disabling google maps from app info and see if it stops, then re-enable.

OP screen looks strange and looks nothing like mine: I have GPS on all the time and actually used maps for driving from work today and GPS shows active only when screen was on. With screen off on mine GPS shows off as well, where OP shows GPS active all the time. I wonder if OP has some program requesting GPS position at all times, even with screen off. Maybe some anti theft tracking or showing OP position to friends and family? Maybe same program over rides off setting? I never heard of settings being inverted, but maybe there is some system error.
Thanks for your feedback, after trying a few things: disabling Gmaps, rebooting device, turning off location services still no joy. So before doing a factory reset I reset the app preferences, which you can do but going to settings>app manager>all>press menu and then select ' reset app preferences' and it worked.
So it must if been some app causing this, I don't have a tracking app apart from the Android device manager, which is on, a bit stumped what it was but now glad it's gone as my OCD was going through the roof!! ?

I had the same problem, all my GPS settings were set to off but somehow the Battery stats were showing that the GPS was all time on! I tried many things until I found the real culprit, and in my case was not the OS software but an App that is keeping the GPS on despite closing it! The App (2GIS) is of course related to GPS as it includes navigation among its features. The solution was to close the app and reboot my device instead of deleting that app as I really want it! So I will advise anyone with this problem to find every app on their phone which uses GPS and monitor them, hopefully you will track down the culprit!

Google Maps/Navigation broken after KitKat update...

First I find my Swiftkey generates an error message at boot after KitKat update...
Now I try finding directions on my phone and then press the button for directions and get the below error.
I'm starting to not like this KitKat update. Can anyone please test by searching for directions to... McDonalds or anywhere and see if yours generate the same error?
When you go to location settings... there are no settings for high accuracy or device only.
Thanks.

Did you actually check your GPS settings?
KitKat has multiple location settings (device only, low power, etc). You may be set to low power which will give you that error.
I'd get it all the time in KK Roms when I'd travel since I leave it on low power until I need maps.
Thanks. I got frustrated and wiped my phone again since I didnt have much on it from last night and when using map it gave me the error message.
But somehow after reading your message I went into location setting and it was set to high frequency and when I loaded the map app it worked!
I don't know how it changed to high frequency... there is no bullet to activate it. Frustrating but at least it's working.

I think there's something that asks you when you first launch the new ROM and the default is low power mode.

Update on the nav... it wasnt until later in the evening where I found the button to change to high frequency... you go to settings > location section and for some reason wasnt apparent to me before that you can press "Mode" at the top to change. I thought it was just a label and not a button that drills down.

I keep seeing people call it "high frequency", r u sure not mistaken with "high accuracy"
KK has combined Android location and Google location access, so you have to go in there, tap on the seem-to-be-gray-out button and change it to whatever you like. There are 3 options there. Explore it!

Stock Rooted NC4 (no SS) Wi-Fi question

Took the OTA update while keeping root. (I already know what I am potentially giving up and the 'future proof risk' I took, don't plan on being with Verizon too much longer so I said screw it and went with immediate satisfaction)
What I'm trying to find is how to keep Wi-Fi turned off. A quick search hasn't turned up anything. I've gone into settings and made the changes there but wifi wants to keep turning on anyway.
I'm not sure if Verizon/Samsung hardcoded this into the OTA or if an app is deciding to turn it on.
Any suggestions?

Do you know about the Settings --> WiFi --> Advanced ---> Always Allow Scanning ? That keeps WiFi on even if you turn it off for location purposes.
To get Advanced hit the Settings softkey next to the home hard key when in the WiFi screen.
I've got that deselected. I think it's either an app or a Wanam setting.
Trying to see if there is a good app that could report what does what (ie app a is turning on bluetooth and app b is turning on wifi, as an example).
Thanks for the input though.

I noticed the location screen, set to GPS only - it's not true. Verizon Location Services are also running when this option selected.
To use real "GPS only" (hardware) - install power toggles from play store, create toggle w GPS, turn on toggle, accept root access, bingo...
Comment - Over version 4.3 and 4.4.2 GPS hardware is tethered with Verizon Location Services (Big Yuk!!) - as long as you do not go into the phone's location settings and turn the switch on (which forces either google, wifi, and / or Verizon location services to be associated with the hardware GPS) and just use the power toggles GPS option, then you'd be ok...
Accuracy Note - Using the hardware only GPS on a Note 3 does bring you down to and average of 10ft accuracy without AGPS / any other supporting location services. The claims that Verizon, wifi, google location services enhance / refine your experience is most likely a misnomer - Use of a specific GPS program with maps on the device itself are best and just as reliable if not more so... see copilot app

[Q] Use GPS without data usage on my Note 3?

When Samsung/Verizon kindly updated my firmware to version 4.4.2 the option of activating my GPS went away. Now I have to activate Location Services which wants to utilize data as well.
I don't want to be using data. I only want to use my GPS as I used to be able to do. Often when I want to use GPS I'm also in a place where I don't even have service anyway so I don't see any point in trying to use data I'm not going to be getting.
So is there any way to work around the 4.4.2 firmware and activate the GPS without activating the whole Location Services system? My searches have not revealed anything.
And since I figured I would need to do it in order to implement any fix, I used TowelRoot to root the phone, installed SuperSU and Titanium Backup as well as BusyBox.
I do not claim any sophistication at this stuff.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Just turn off mobile data?

You can download Power Toggles from the Play Store and make a GPS toggle. Unlike the stock toggle this only activates the GPS and no other location type services. There is also a toggle in your quick toggles to turn off data. Give Locus Map Free a try for offline maps and tracking, I use it a lot.

Thank you. I've now downloaded Power Toggles and hope to get a chance to figure out how to use it over the next day or two. It looks quite do-able and should work very nicely.

It's simple, just long press on the home screen to add a widget, select power toggle and then press and remove everything but the location toggle. You can then select an icon, color, background. ..etc.

Help with 'Do Not Disturb' Mode

Okay. Maybe I'm crazy. Maybe my phone's just not honoring my settings. But my DND mode isn't working. I have it set on a schedule to kick in everyday around 10pm and disable at 7am. I have custom exceptions for favorite contacts, alarms on, repeat callers on, but events/reminders off. I don't have any apps set for priority notifications. But I still get sound notifications for just about everything. On top of that, I still get reminders from the apps I set it on for (messaging apps, mainly SMS). Am I doing something wrong?
Mine force closes every time I attempt to go into the settings. The only way I can get it to work is by manually turning it on and off via the quick settings bar. It does work because I received e-mails, texts etc. while it was turned on and it never made a peep. I googled it, and other people are having the issue also.

Maybe it's your font settings? No problems with mine and no problems having it block stuff when activated. I use it daily when sleeping because I work nights.

Nope went back to default theme and font still does it even after a reboot
I had the same problem and it miraculously started working again
I had the same problem. Started playing around with notification settings for individual apps tonight. I believe I have the settings right to avoid getting notifications when I don't want them. Here's a screen shot of one of the apps. You have to go into each app you DON'T want notifications for and set them as they are in the screen shot. Hope this helps.

UPDATE from previous post - it would appear that my advise above is garbage. I continued to get notifications even after I made changes to individual application notification settings. I'm stumped at this point. Samsung needs to address this.

And while they are at it, add the damn LED to the do not disturb mode!!! I don't want to have a bright green LED shining in my face overnight, much less a blinking one.
