Would it be possible to backport image processing software from Z5 in the future? - Xperia Z3 Compact General

Sony says the Z5 camera has been designed in conjunction with Sony’s Alpha α camera engineers [1]. Assuming (hoping) they've improved image processing (that which the Z3 lacks most it seems), would it even be feasible to backport the software to the Z3 line?

I'm assuming it won't be open source so no, I don't think so.
If it was possible, we would already have stock quality camera on AOSP

Is possible?? Yes. Will they do?? Don't think so.

But the question is not if they will do but rather if one of our gifted devs on XDA can do it.
E.g. @xperiaz2 ported here the Xperia Z4 framework & Sony Stock Camera for many other Xperia phones running on CM12.x/AOSP.
:good:
So things are possible, even if it's closed source. And hey, this here is XDA.

Actually the Z3c will probably run the same camera software through an official update. Now for the image processing by itself will not be the same nor will it be backported. The reason is that the sensor is not the same and the image processing is tuned according to the sensor, if it's characteristic (noise, sharpness, colors) are different you will not be able to get a good result.

you're going to have to re do the kernel.
very hard work especially when you don't have the specific sources.
It might help

If you replace 5MP camera with 8MP one you could may insert new kernel module during boot (exmpl_camera_type_.so) into kernel. It isn't easy, but it is easier than building whole new kernel.
Simple answer: POSIBLY NOT
It could be done but you need to know all about your phone.
This could make your camera stop working. If you try to ask technicians in stores, they would say NOT.
So don't try to do that. If you just want a phone with good camera, buy Nokia Pureview with 40MP or the latest Xperia that probably 13MP.
If you're using Xperia, try to Google xperia cybershot mod (for rooted xperia devices only), download and install using CWM Recovery.
The mod will improve your camera quality, plus Mobile Bravia Engine 2 that enhances image quality by higher the contrast and shapen the image.

yeah your right bro....if you have a 5mp cam then that's it...you cannot make it higher..unless you change the pixel...of your phone..
there is only one phone that is able to do this. the xperia neo.
sony was forced to release 2 versions of it, the neo and neo v. neo have 8mp exmor module, while neo v have 5mp. people were able to buy spare part 8mp module and put it into the neo v. then just flash the neo kernel and be happy.
i don't think there is many chances of putting other modules in phones simply coz they would not fit in casing and even different order of the camera module connection wires.
the software is possible, but you will have hardware problems.
the new camera maybe is not plug and play. maybe you have to mod your hardware.
you have to check the datasheet to adapt to your phone, you must change, new camera voltage, frequency, drivers, initialization code, so on, so on... its possibly, but you must have the knowledges.
Thanks

Well... I had similar ideas/plans, but by reading this, I've just changed my mind. Thanks.
I'm considering trying to fit Experia Z 13mp camera module into the Experia Z Ultra 8mp, both are Exmore RS sensors and if they are physically the same size I see no reason why this wouldn't work even without Kernel change - they are very similar devices
Interesting
Wow nice thread, im interesting to mod, hope my 5mp Camera can upgrade...

Offical 4.2 AOSP Realese From Sony

What's up guys!>>?
Sony Officaly realesed the AOSP 4.2 For developers, Almost everything is now working including sensors, the only problem right now is the NFC; Otherwise, the realese is stable, fast, smooth and pretty much perfect. Let's try it guys and c what we can do...
Currently, the majority of the features on the Xperia Z are working in the pure Android environment. There's SD card support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and LED light as well as the sensors are all working well. The camera is also working flawlessly, but its code is tested internally at the moment as it requires proprietary binaries that the company can't publish right now.

I think you'll find the camera isn't working - it's only working internally at Sony as it's using their own proprietary binaries. They're not being released at this stage.
Quite why this is, I don't know, as I think Sony have shared their binaries in the past with the FXP and CM teams.
Wrong forum, only post in development forums if you have an actual development, please ask to move this to general or delete it since there already was a post about this in general.

Perfect? Really? How is the camera? Any improvement? Compared to the Galaxy series, sony's camera is far from perfect when you zoom in. Hard to see.

You never use digital zoom. It's pointless since it basically just crops and stretches the image. I don't know why they added a digital zoom in since it only ruins pictures normally

And Qualcom announced S808 and 810 CPU based on 64 bit architecture.
Z1 is great, Z2 is awesome...
We could only imagine what will Sony present with Z3 or Z4 (or whatever they named them).
Sony will rule in Android world.
If they add navigation bar control through settings UI - I could leave without root on something like Z3/Z4.

I'm saying Z1 has best camera...

If you read their assessment the tests are done to compare overall camera performance and not just image quality of the photos, they also include video performance as well. The Z2 and the pureview have the same score in image quality but the Z2 trumps the pureview in aspects such as exposure and autofocus, which are all accounted for in the final score. I'm no camera expert but DxOMark are supposedly one of the best in camera reviews, the Z2 is looking even more promising then ever
Highly impressive that it best the pureview. Does waterproofing a camera effect it's performance? If so, then it's even more impressive.
I tend to agree that camera performance should include some measure of accessibility. If a camera can only take great shots in manual mode after fiddling with 17 settings in perfect light on days you got lucky with the old lady and a promotion at work it isn't as useful day to day as one where you can just press the button and get a lesser but decent shot to me.

Really, Samsung don't have it, LG don't have it either. Or has that changed?
sony wouldnt implement it in its camera firmware anyway, but i was hoping that at least they would include the support for it for 3rd party camera apps, but acordingly to xperia blog, all features are disabled.
This is a shame really, sony ****ed up big time. Galaxy s6 has RAW option, manual focus, manual everything, and all this in the default camera app. You can go even further and use 3rd party apps that have more features.
we cant even get away from the mediocre camera results from sony now, this is sad.
i expect that they implement some of the advanced camera api features from lollipop on Z4, so soon or later it would be ported to z3 series, but this is just a speculation by me.

No, we can't because the camera binaries for the Sony Exmor IMX220 camera sensor have to support it and the only phones to use this sensor are the entire Sony Z Series and the Meizu MX4.
Can someone say if it's possible to use another devices camera binaries for the same sensor?
Since our only hope is riding on the Meizu MX4: gsmarena.com/meizu_mx4_and_mx_4_pro_to_get_android_lollipopbased_flyme_os-news-11023.php

meh,
because YOU want RAW doesnt't mean other want it, 99% of customers don't care about RAW so don't say stupid things.
Would have been nice to have to play around with and to show off to my iPhone friend . In the end it all depends on your point of view. Compared to smartphone camera a few years ago the Z3c is amazing. I've made some beautiful shots with it. And compared to a "real" camera all smartphones are garbage (except maybe Nokia?).
So for me the camera is perfect. I don't want to make a photography album with my pictures I want to have a quick shooter to capture some memories. And with the auto mode and the dedicated button the Z3c is exactly what I need.
It's frustrating because the camera hardware in the phone isn't being utilized to its full potential. Yes, it's fine for the average user, but for some, and I think many on this forum share this mindset - we try to get the most out of our devices. Not tapping into our camera's full potential is like leaving our device unrooted - it's neutered.

The main difference between the S6 and the Z3 being that the S6 is running Lollipop out of the box, where the Z3 is running Kit Kat. Implementing the Camera2 API is a lot more work than just porting the legacy firmware on Lollipop. That's why all OEMs chose to port their old firmware and stop here.

Camera quality on Z1C (CM12.1)

Is there any way to improve camera quality on Cyanogen Mod latest nightly (official) for Z1 Compact?
CM fully works now but i dont like camera quality, like I have 8mpx, and front one is bad.
Don't know about improving it, but there's some ports/alternative camera apps out there that will take better pictures. Google cam, Jishnu's h2o cam port, and one on play store called Camera HD ultra, or something like that. I've found that they all take better pics. Personally I'm waiting for a MM update to the Sony camera port.
think there will be official MM camera blobs for aosp, levelone1?
onto the OP: no way to improve aosp camera, as manufacturers (sony is not alone) doesn't publish full featured camera drivers to aosp so the community uses generic hw layer for cameras therefore almost every camera (by that i mean big manufacturers) is worse than stock. there was a lot commentary written already on that matter, aiming mostly on google and aosp architecture overall.
agree with levelone1, you can try jishnu sur's ports as they include binary libraries ripped from stock roms. it doesn't always work on every rom and hardware but you can try. he have g+ community https://plus.google.com/communities...2/stream/d8676ee7-0970-452e-82f3-a10e3b0b4a36 and publishes regulary camera ports.
