Fingerprint sensor problem. - Galaxy S6 Edge+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This morning my wife's s6 edge+ fingerprint sensor stopped unlocking the phone. Both mine and her fingerprints were reordered and working OK before today.
I recorded mine again but same problem system says can not recognize and have to use the password.
Any ideas??
It is stock from Verizon system up to date.

I know it seems trivial, but have you tried cleaning the button off? I noticed mine starts getting flaky if it gets too smudgy.

This happens... could be sweat, could be humidity, could be dry skin... who knows.
One night I went bowling and my right thumb print wouldn't work all night. But my other fingers worked fine.
This is why I save multiple fingerprints.

Yeah, it could be easily due to moisture. Happened to me as well. I keep multiple fingers and multiple hands...

Mine is working fine, sometimes only when I don't put the finger correctly it doesn't read it

Phone fell 2 feet onto concrete, now can't go into landscape

It fell out of my pocket when I bent over and dropped 2 feet onto concrete. It was naked and luckily there's only one very minor scratch right next to the visor (whew!) but now it seems my auto rotate doens't work. I double checked to make sure it wasn't from the locked rotation settings, and that's normal.
Any ideas? :/
EDIT: rebooted and now it works. Hopefully it's not going to happen again.
Sounds like you got lucky. I wouldn't suspect hardware damage if it's fine now but you never know. Be careful! These phones are pretty fragile
what scared me was just after i said everything was fixed, Chrome wouldn't go into landscape but when I opened my camera app and tried it it worked and t hen Chrome worked again. Fragile phone for sure, lucky with JUST the minor blemish near the visor and with the rotation still intact.
actually the landscape issue is due to Naptime not restoring autorotate when you wake the phone
The accelerometer of the 6P seems to have some problems sometimes, a friend punched me in the leg a couple of weeks ago right on my phone, landscape mode didn't work until I started shaking it a bit...

You should get a case. I can't imagine why you wouldnt, but they're seriously the difference between life and death (of your nexus) sometimes.
i shook the phone many times but it didn't matter as the phone still worked, it was just a bug with the app Naptime not restoring auto rotate when woken up. Others have reported the same problem on Google+ and is reproducible.
I do have a case, a Diztronic case. I just like to take the phone out of the case when I walk into my house. Anytime it's out of the house it's in the case 100% of the time. I just clumsily let it fall during those 10 feet in between :/
Had this same problem. Hit right on the back glass piece sort of hard with your knuckle and it should fix the issue. That usually gets the accelerometer back working

The fingerprint scanner is useless

Hey,
I have the Z5C now for over 3 months. The device is great but one thing is drivin' me nuts. The fingerprint scanner is just useless. It hardly works and when it works it's just slow.
I've tried everything scanning multiple fingerprints of the same finger, different locations and so on. But nothing helps.
Have you guys any tipson how to improve the fingerprint scanner?
I've found that I was not holding down my finger long enough. After I started holding it down a little longer, it seemed like it started working much better, nearly everytime.
I found that it sometimes doesnt work with smart lock. I'll try the fingerprint scanner many times and it will give me a failure, then I just swipe, and unlocks
Mine works just fine, as long I don't have really greasy fingers...
Working fine here as well. Sometimes it gets a bit greasy, clean it with a cloth and it works well again.
works fine for me too. Has trouble when my finger is wet, but probably any scanner would have this problem.
Working flawlessly here. It could be faster but at least it's consistent.
My only issue is also if my finger is wet. Otherwise, I have no problem with the fingerprint scanner. Works every time. Sometimes, too well. I've just picked up my phone, hit the scanner just right, and unlocked the phone without trying too.
No matter what I've tried I can't get it to consistently work. Washed the phone with soap. Cleaned the scanner with alcohol. It'll work for a little. Bit but then stop working. I must have more oily hands than most. But the scanner on the nexus 6p never failed me.
Wet or greasy fingers won't work... If the finger you programed into the phone isn't the same or similar state then it won't work..
I might program a wet or greasy finger as well So I get the same response when unlocking.. Watch this space.
Probably haven't helped washing the phone with soap XD... I'm getting vivid images of a glass of JD with a phone in it now....

Yeah that is exactly my problem. If my finger is slightly greasy it won't work. It's so annoying.
Pocketnow had the same problem with their Z5 aswell. My experience is preety much the same.

To anybody having problems with the scanner: is there a possibility that you have registered your fingerprints while your fingers were wet or greasy? (and now clean fingers are not properly recognized)
On another note, I noticed that the scanner only recognizes a certain portion of the finger and only in the correct orientation (even if I properly moved my finger during registration).
Mine is often too fast, unlocking the phone when I only wanted to check the time.
If my fingers are sweaty, it'll have issues, but that's to be expected.

That's exactly the issue. Some people just naturally have more oily hands, like myself. The fingerprint scanner should be good enough to account for that. This was never an issue when I used the iPhone 6s or when I used the Nexus 6P. I've only experienced a fingerprint scanner as incapable on the Z5C.
instead on focusing only on adding a fingerprint you should also note which type of grip you have when registering. Since the orientation of the fingerprint is recorded as well it seems. And finally add the same finger multiple times with a different grip and if you unlock using the same grip/finger combo as registered, i have had no issues.

Tried that as well. Most of the time I get "Finger moved too fast" or something. Or it's "Not recognized".

This is a great point; finger orientation matters, in my experience. I used to register my finger lined up with the sensor, but I got many unlock failures this way. Then I noticed that I would usually grab and turn on the phone with my finger at an angle. I retrained the sensor, moving my finger to the various orientations that I might use. This improved recognition greatly.
Remember also to vary your finger position slightly when you train, just like the phone asks you to do. There is little point of training it with the same 10 scans of your finger. The more views it has, the easier it can interpolate for recognition. (On the flip side, presenting it with 10 completely different scans would not work well either.)

Na, that doesn't work for me. Even if I try to register a new finger it often vibrates that it has registered my finger but the progress circle is not moving. So it's not reading it properly right at the beginning...
I've had no probems with the scanner- occasionally it takes more than one try but that's usually because of my finger/thumb position.
As above though I did make sure when I registered each figit that I moved it around to give the print in lots of different positions.
Fingerprint scanner works flawlessly for me I'm very impressed with it
Hi all,
For me it works well, i have some problems when my fingers are wet but it unlock the device faster than place a patern
In the other hand i try to use it with Paypal app but all the time it tells that fingerprint is not available, did you have the same problem with paypal app?
My bank app uses the fingerprint too and works like expected

Fingerprint reader once a day not working

Hi guys. At least once a day I take my phone out of my left pocket and the fingerprint reader doesn't work. I have to press the power button and then it works perfectly fine until the next time. I always put the phone in my pocket without anything else. Anyone else getting the same bug???
Same bug here. Only happens after the phone has been in my pocket for awhile.

A single press of the power switch does the trick, like you said. I don't have any other solution. I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned this considering most people carry their phones in their pockets.

I found a few other users reporting it, but it doesn't seem to be widespread. My guess is somehow the friction created in the pocket is messing up the fingerprint scanner.
Display side facing towards leg
I searched the web and there seem to be many different phones with this problem. One suggestion was to put the phone in the pocket with the display side facing towards the thigh. I'm going to try that suggestion and see if it works. I would highly recommend you give that a try too. Since it never glitches when I have it sitting on my desk, there is something weird going on in the pocket.
Anything metal in your pocket?
The pins affect the fingerprint reader.
Support told me it's normal and to not put my phone on a metal surface if it bothers me so much.
-_-

I have no metal in my pocket. So far putting the phone with the display side towards my leg in the pocket seems to be working (knock on wood). Normally by now it would have acted up. It's crazy but somehow putting it in my pocket with the fingerprint reader facing towards my leg has the same effect as putting the device on a metal surface. Maybe I'm a cyborg and nobody told me???

Define doesn't work. It knows that you are pressing it but makes you enter your passcode. Or it doesn't register at touch at all. Sometimes mine after being in my pocket will have me enter my password. I haven't experienced an issue where it doesn't register a touch.

It's crazy but putting the phone in my pocket with the display facing my leg has solved my problem. By "doesn't work" I mean it's completely dead. The fingerprint sensor wasn't detecting my finger (no vibration). It's the same exact thing that happens if you put the phone down on a metal surface, but obviously I don't have any metal in my pocket.

Interesting, I haven't experienced that issue. Maybe I will face my screen out in my pocket and see if I can recreate this on my device.
My finger print reader won't unlock my phone now. It was working fine until yesterday. I tried restarting, turning it off but nothing seems to work.
It won't let me add another fingerprint either. I get some type is cryptic error message.

I'm also noticing fingerprint problems. I'm seeing both unresponsive (not registering anything) an also failed attempts (vibrates but does not unlock). This seems to happen randomly about once a day.
---------- Post added at 02:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:06 PM ----------
Side note:. I just tried to add my another fingerprint to the phone, and upon the first press on the reader I'm getting "enrollment not complete" every time I try to add.
I've been having issues with fingerprint reader also.
Says "finger moved too fast"
or "couldn't process, please try again"
I factory reset the phone, and it worked ok, for about 24 hours.
Hasn't been a problem on my Pixel
Sent from my PH-1 using XDA Labs
I also have problem with fingerprint.
It does not detect my finger 50% of the time (no vibration and if the screen is on I get message "couldn't process fingerprint, please try again").
Factory reset didn't help.
Is it a faulty hardware?
I have had mine for almost 3 weeks and I never put it in my pocket. It is either in my holster on my belt at work or in my purse. Many times it does not work. Even laying on the table by my chair it doesn't work. My 2 year old Nexus 6P worked perfect every time. Getting to be a pain.
Odd.. mine works great.. first time setting it up on a phone and am so impressed how quick it works.. how did you set it up.. i retrained mine after noticing that i only placed a part of my finger on the sensor sometimes.. after that it was great.. added another finger after so both hands could unlock..
Sent from my PH-1 using Tapatalk
I came from the Nexus 6P which worked flawlessly each and every time. I set this one up the same way but the PH 1 takes a few times to accept the finger prints when setting it up. And does not always work every time. I have set up two first fingers and neither of them work but about half the time. I am hoping an update will fix that.

Trouble with the fingerprint sensor

Hey guys. Got my G6 yesterday and I'm having trouble with the fingerprint sensor. I scanned it in and it worked for about 30-40 mins, then when I tried unlock the phone it wouldn't recognise it and just did the double vibrate. I've reset the fingerprint and scanned it in multiple times, all with the same result, I've cleared the cache and I honestly don't what's wrong.
Sometimes when scanning it pops up saying the sensor needs to be cleaned, but even when I wipe it down the message stays around. At first I thought it was because I was using a case on the phone, but that can't be it, since it's a spigen case.

It's totally normal. I'm experiencing the same with my G6 6 month old. Sometimes the finger print sensor doesn't work: no vibrate and it's like it's dead. So you have to wait a little or restart the phone.
It lacks also in updates and has, for me, several other issues so I'll never buy an LG again.

I don't think it's normal, because I watched a ton of reviews and videos about the phone before purchasing it, and all of them said the fingerprint sensor works quickly and perfectly. I've seen posts where people have used it with pizza dough and water on their hands. Everyone would have included it in their reviews if the sensor was this bad.

But mine, and also others, have the same issue with fingerprint sensor so, for me, it's a BIG BUG that any cheap chinese device I used before don't have.

Fingerprint scanner reliability

Hello! I have seen the ugly head come around that the scanner has not been super reliable. Now, I have the Tmo version and am on 9.0.0. Is that the reason currently? If not, It seems like the screen protector has smudges on it thus causing miss reads. If I try to wipe it off, it helps. Maybe we should be looking at a different screen protector? Thoughts?
Cheers
Joshua
I haven't had a fail to read yet... A few times it was slightly slower but still went through. Maybe try resetting up your finger. I know if my hands have been wet for a while my old phones wouldn't read.

I have reset it up a few times now. Tried even setting it up twice and that still didn't help much (to do this, I just kept pressing it again and again and it finally logged a second finger).

The more i use the FP reader, the better it seems to be getting. One thing is that it requires more pressure than my old Moto Z Play, but that's been an easy adjustment. Give it a little more time and continue to use all the fingers that you have stored. I mainly use my right thumb, and it works all the time now. My left thumb is hit and miss, so I'm using it more.
Unlocked the display 30+ times on 9.0.4 and it didn't reject my finger once. Speed varied each time if you place your finger/thumb perfectly aligned will unlock almost instantly
Was an OTA for screen unlock improvements already not sure what it changed though

Ill try pressing harder. Good idea!
I have the TMo version and I don't really get failures for my main/first finger entered. It seems that the more I use a particular finger, the better it unlocks. So the first finger is fine. The second was ok and is getting better. Third and fourth are still a mixed bag but getting better. My suggestion is to make sure you are enrolling them as you would be using them. So if you're going to be using a particular finger while cradling the phone a certain way, enroll it that way. If you will use that finger while the phone is sitting on your desk, enroll it that way. That seems to be the main thing I've found.
It seems the scanner isn't reliable on mine. It is really snappy after the initial setup. Then it loses accuracy within minutes after the setup. It doesn't recognize any of the finger 90% of the the time. I ended up either enter in the pin or use face detection. I don't understand the problem. my oneplus 6t is a tmobile.
I've got a McLaren on OS 9.0.9, and can definitely vouch for unlock instability w/ the left thumb.
Still have the screen protector on from factory shipment, so don't know if removing it would help, but not enough of a nuisance for me to want to remove it...yet.
I'm having an even worse issue.. A friend is able to unlock my phone without adding his fingerprint to my phone.. OP isn't taking this issue serious when I report this to them and they keep telling me to add my fingerprints again..
I have a OP 6T McLaren Edition, and just registered my right thumb. When I can't use my thumb, I use face recognition.
So far it's been reliable after a few weeks of use, but I've noticed you need to learn the right spot and the way you put the finger also influences its accuracy.
Something I've noticed...
I didn't use the "face unlock" when I first got the phone. Just used the fingerprint...VERY quick. Then, I turned on the face unlock just to see how well it worked, and was surprised how well it DID work (just not with sunglasses...duh). I've noticed, that if I wake up the phone,
with it anywhere near my face and try to unlock it with the fingerprint sensor (habit), the phone will stutter while I assume it is trying figure out WHICH way to unlock it.
Any chance that is the issue with yours?
If I have the phone laying on a table, no where near my face, and hit the power button, the fingerprint sensor is VERY responsive, but, if my face is anywhere near the phone, it struggles if I hit the fingerprint sensor.
Just throwing it out there...
Hmm.. I did notice that. I'll try disabling face unlock on my phone and observe it.
