How to upgrade rooted Note 3 from 4.4.2 to current (Newbie here) - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

TL;DR Help a newbie with upgrading my rooted Note 3 from 4.4.2 to a more current version please. I'm old and dumb and really tried to find an answer before embarrassing myself on a forum of experts. Knowing me, the answer is probably right under my nose. Go easy on me <3
Hey guys,
I used the search function on this site and on google but was unable to find what I'm looking for.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with T-Mobile. I have Android aversion 4.4.2 and my model number is SM-N900T.
I rooted my phone using a guide I found on youtube to get superuser for the purpose of being able to play emulators on my phone, such as Snes9x EX+, Nostalgia.NES Lite, ePSXe, etc. They all work great. I am not using a custom ROM.
The problem I'm facing is that I don't understand if I need to unroot (correct term?) my phone and just get the auto updates, or to download and install them manually, but I'm unable to receive auto updates over the air as I'm sure you guys would know since this is your hobby and are versed in this sort of thing. I don't even know how to do either really properly but am not afraid to try.
The reason I'm wanting to upgrade now (which might be completely unrelated) is that I haven't been receiving text messages from either my sister or my roommate, whom both of their last messages were received by me on Aug. 5th. I tried contacting my carrier and they said they didn't detect a problem. Both of their carriers said the same thing (one being T-Mobile as well). I guess this is just another step in troubleshooting but I would like to believe this is a network issue.
Any advice would help and would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

[Q] UK Orange S4 questions

Hello all!
I posted the questions below on the UK/Ireland thread yesterday, but havent had any replies yet, so trying here for better luck!
My 9505 arrived today, and cant wait to get busy with it! So reposting my questions here, in the hope that i get the answers!
I really need to find out which rooting method is suitable for this device, so I dont screw things up.
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help!
Hi guys and gals!
I was a long time serial HTC user, and now finally have jumped ships over to Samsung , so going through a learning curve here, please bear with me!
Waiting for my S4 on OrangeUK upgrade to arrive tomorrow, so getting ready for the usual initial steps and have a few quick questions:
1 What is the model sent out by Orange, 9500, or 9505? Its a GT-I 9505
2 On XDA, what is the difference between the "Galaxy S 4 i950x Android Development", and "Galaxy S 4 i950x ORIGINAL Android Development" sections? I dont get it...
3 Is the Orange UK S4 all ok to root, sim unlock etc as we currently stand? Which method is the recommended one?
(I ask, since having trawled the forums previously, have seen that this changes according to latest software versions etc until devs catch up; easier to ask quickly here than read 300 pages and still be confused )
4 Which is the best/easiest method to unbrand and change the carrier designator, so I end up with an unbranded stock/sim free model designator and ROM? Is it worth doing?
Want to get rid of the Orange crapware, AND be able to get future updates, since on my HTC Sensation removing the crapware changed the hash value of the system software, and subsequent updates would never install anymore)
Thanks in advance guys, looking forward to your replies and starting off with my S4!
OK, after playing around for awhile, it seems that happily ive been sent a stock version! ie no Orange crapware etc... :good:
Ive updated the software to i9505xxuame2, with OTA.
Still uninformed as to the best root method to use, so any advice will be appreciated!
Well, no one answered so I tried the following method and it worked great!

[Q] Help with rooting China Version Galaxy SM-N9006 N9006ZCUDMK2

Hey all!
So I finally rid myself of my Apple devices since their support bricked my iPad and refuses to fix it! I got myself a sweet Galaxy Note 3 and love it so far! My issue is that I'm currently living in China for work and my phone is the Chinese Version: SM-N9006 running Android 4.3 with build: J2215J.N9006ZCUDMK2. The AP/CP is N9006ZCUDMK2. I managed to get into the English Samsung app store via VPN and removing the sim card, however, I still cannot get any Google apps since I don't have Google Play installed.
The phone was purchased about a week ago and should be the most recent phone and software version.
Yes, I'm prolly by far the biggest noob in this forum and I'm pooping my pants to brick it somehow XD but well, there's a beginning for everything... I've been on Apple for very long and a bit overwhelmed with the Android platform. So far I've read a couple of sites, forums, discussions, etc. on the benefits of rooting the phone. I found a pretty good explanation on this site by michael1982t:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2495375&page=4
So I have a few questions and would greatly appreciate if someone would take the time and get back at me.
The instructions were writting in October 2013. How relevant are they? Are there any new versions or methods on how to root the Note 3?
Would you guys suggest that this is the way to do it?
In many forums I read about rooting the China Version Note 3 SM-N9006... however, it states that it is the N9006ZCUDMI2 or MI3 version... I have the -MK2 version. Is that a big deal? Will that cause me some kind of software conflict? I have no idea what this number stands for
I'm a bit worried about KNOX and not being able to get into the phone again. I have the activation service turned off and don't really care about the 1 year China-only warranty.
Once the phone is rooted, I then can install the US Platform on it that has all English Apps, Google Store, etc? So from what I understand I would format the phone and play the US platform on it? Or would I just tweak the apps, remove the unwanted Samsung bloatware and Chinese Apps? Would I need the official Android platform or are there any "better" platforms to use? I read something about flashed/roms or gingerbread OS that give much more flexibility and control as to using the phone and getting the most out of it.
I'm running Windows 7. Is Windows XP essential since it is described in the post? I wouldn't think so but I better ask.
From what I read, the only software I need to download to my pc are:
ODIN, CWM recovery and CF-AutoRoot - is that all? Or would someone recommend anything else.
Do I need Samsung Kies at all?
I hope perhaps someone has had the same phone and questions and got an answer or somehow figured it out. I greatly appreciate any help!
Cheers!!

Upgrade my rooted S4 sgh-i337 to 5.0 from 4.4.2, using a Mac

Hi, I need xda's solid information to upgrade my rooted S4 sgh-i337 to 5.0 from 4.4.2. I'm a Mac user, so I haven't been able to find anything useful so far. It was an unlocked AT&T phone, now being used with T-Mobile. I have already downloaded the 5.0 update.zip from AndroidFileHost onto my Mac. OK, here's a stupid question: Why couldn't I simply do a factory reset (in which case would I lose the root?) and then update from Recovery Mode ["apply update from external source"], and re-root later? Thanks for reading, and for whatever help you can give. Oh, I'm still learning, so please don't assume I know anything.
I have other issues I just discovered from Samsung: Because the phone has been unlocked [I bought it this way], I have not been receiving any updates and I have already missed 6 updates. My signal has become weaker, sometimes calls get dropped, and the phone seems to get hotter so I have to charge it more frequently. The savvy tech at Samsung said I could overcome having to re-lock the phone so AT&T [see T-Mobile above] can send me the updates by going to Best Buy and let the Samsung Rep do it all for me, including updating to 5.0.1. The problem is the phone is rooted. Will Samsung not help me if they know the phone is rooted ? (--another naive question, I guess.)
I don't know about flashing anything from Mac or Linux. We used to use Heimdall (command line version) on the S2, but I don't know if that is viable for the S4.
If you take it to BestBuy and tell the tech you are rooted, I bet he will still help you. What is the worst he can do, say no. But if he flashes 5.0.1 for you, you will lose root, as stock 5.0.1 will not be rooted.

I have questions about Samsung Galaxy J series, specifically the J3 Virgin Mobile

I have a few questions for anyone familiar with the Samsung Galaxy J series, specifically the J3. I have virgin mobile, and after a long time suffering with their HTC Desire 510, I want to upgrade, and not wanting to spend $400 on a galaxy S5 , the J3 seems the next best phone to get. However, as I've grown used to having a rooted phone and customizing my phone as much as I want, etc, I want to make sure my next phone can be rooted, and has support for custom ROM's, etc.
The main thing that could help me with my decision would be some guidance as to whether other versions, the J2, J5, J7, etc, that are present here would be potentially compatible with the J3, or if I'm out of luck and should consider other options if rooting is a necessity for me.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Anyone?
I'm sure you can root it.
I'm using j5 and it took me like 15 minutes of reading and about an hour /including downloading and setting up all the things /for the root.
I just want to say that you would need to be prepared to wait until someone make a custom Rom for it.

Thats what I was thinking. I figure that rooting it (hopefully) is similar to the other J series. As long as its rooted, wouldn't I be able to (even w/o custom rom) debloat/customize/etc it with various root tools, apps2sd, etc? Or are those dependent on having a custom rom? On the only phone I've rooted so far (htc desire 510) I didn't really spend any time with stock rom when I rooted, instead immediately flashing Nonsense rom, so I'm not sure what limitations keeping stock rom comes with when rooted.
Thank you for the reply! It gives me a bit of hope at least.
I'm not really familiar with the device. As I said before I have a j5. According to the applications that you mentioned I think that it would be possible to get and install them. But rooting isn't quantum mechanics. There are some apps that you could easily install on almost any device and get the root privileges. For example kingroot I am sure you can find others. I usually root my devices trough pc.I recommend you to take some time before jumping on the first option that comes up as a possible solution.
According to changing the stock Rom. I don't known how developed is that treat so.. Again read here and there about it.

Let me know if I helped by hitting the thumb up
I dont think permanent root is going to be possible until a working twrp is made so that you can flash supersu. I know that sux, I wanted to get one for my wife because she broke the screen on her vm s3. But without root and the ability to get unlimited hotspot... nope. I asked a dev ( lrs121) if he would port twrp to it. He said he would try if I had the phone and could get him the necessary files from it. Look in the sprint s3 section under twrp for virgin and boost s3. He is a great dev.
Actually far as I can say there are 2 twrp options. you just have to read more

Read where? Could you be a little more vague?
I am by no means a noob, and when I answer someone, I generally throw in a link.
But thanks for letting me know it exists.
Is it another phones twrp that works? Any hints at all?

Sorry i was on the phone while traveling. I`ve mistaken that it was about the j5 ( like mine device) and for that especially i had tried 2 working options up to now for twrp. but i`m pretty sure you can find tutorials or you can even simply DL the twrp /for example/ 3 install it as an apk and than you if it stuck just would need to DL odin for your PC and than strictly follow the steps / install /unzip odin, connect device , go into DL mode and flash it with the stock ROM which you can find in sammobile /.com i guess/ ?
GL and hit thanks if i helped!

Need a Developer to Assist in Upgrade of Note 4 Developer Edition

I am looking for a Developer or someone else who is very experienced to help me upgrade my Note 4 Developer Edition to the latest version and possibly to a ROM. It's currently rooted, bootloader is unlocked, and on BOG5. All the threads out there that say safe Retal/Dev upgrade are confusing to me. I tried one in the past and it locked my bootloader and had to send it back to Sammy. I don't want that to happen again.
What little experience I have with rooting and changing ROMs are with my old Galaxy Nexus, which had way easier methods than this phone, in my opinion. I also, don't want to have to use King Root or Kingo Root because I don't want my IMEI stolen. All I need is for someone who knows what they are doing to tell me exactly what to do for my phone and its setup, help debug if I have issues, and be somewhat easily accessible by email or chat if I have questions.
I'm not a total noob at this stuff. I can't say i completely understood what I did on my old Nexus but it worked. I bricked it a few times but was able to fix it by reading forums. The margin of error for the Note 4 Dev Ed just seems to be much narrower since I am trying to avoid the shady rooting tools.
If you are interested, shoot me a private message with how much you would charge for this, briefly describe your experience level, and when you can be available to help so we can coordinate.
Thanks
