Is Indian Edge+ (SM-G928G) compatible with major Canadian carriers? - Galaxy S6 Edge+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would be moving to Vancouver in 2-3 months, so wanted to know if I can pop-in a GSM sim (of one of the good carriers over there) in the the unlocked version of Edge+ available in India (SM-G928G). Which all bands it supports, any idea?
Thanks

I have a factory unlocked SG-928C, which international version, and I am in the US with US T-Mobile carrier.

I wouldn't be so sure. Check the band it supports for 4G. Usually Indian and Canadian carriers use different bands, so a 4G device capable in India might not work with 4G of Canadian carrier. Other than that, phone should work without a problem. If the 4G spectrum is not supported, your data would be limited to 3G.
Check what all bands are supported in your model, you can see it here I guess. Also, check here for the LTE spectrum used by different carriers in different countries.
Hope that helps!

Try pressing *#*#4636#*#*
Once you're at the Test Menu, select Device Information-> Set preferred Network Type -> LTE/GSM auto (PRL). This is how I change my network type on AT&T. If your network/device is compatible with LTE, you should see LTE symbol below 4G symbol on notification bar.

Ofcourse. It's not a lot, you could have just tried once before asking again!
Usually samsung's service command codes start with *#*# and ends with #*#*

Checked it, Telus and Rogers both work at Band 4 for LTE, and SM-G928G has it, so I guess there shouldn't be any problem.
Thanks

In my AT&T model, it works. And I believe it should work just fine for any other model as well as long as its S6 Edge+. Not really sure why it's not working for you. You just need to press #*#*4636*#*# quickly in the native dialer and that should open up the menu. You do not even need to click on dial button to make a call. You can search for your carrier specific model's service menu codes in google.

Do you have LTE menu option on your One? (not EE customers)

I am on Three UK, and although LTE is not rolled out yet, I was surprised that the LTE menu options do not appear at all. For example, why wouldn't I have this option in case I roamed to a foreign country that provides LTE to roamers.
In the network options I only have
WCDMA only
GSM/WCDMA auto
I know those on EE have another option for LTE.
Supposedly LTE and 3G SIMs are the same. In fact Three will provide free LTE access later this year automatically and without any administrative changes.
Could others confirm, if they are not on an LTE network, whether they see the LTE option on the phones network settings?
I think the phone only shows the option to turn LTE on or off if it detects LTE on your network so it should appear automatically once Three launch LTE
I agree! I decompiled Settings.apk of the HTC One and the network selection option uses RadioInfo class to determine what should be shown on the menu. In fact I can even see CDMA & EV-DO there.
Excellent. Perfect answers. Thank you. For some reason I had it stuck in my head that it was based on the SIM provisioning. I should have realised that it is based on the capabilities of the network you are currently connected to rather than a provisioning option.
I have LTE option on mine, got it on vodafone contract from p4u though the phone is sim free/unlocked.

Maybe.
Seems like you just wanted to vent. You didn't say what custom ROMs you have tried or any other useful details, which leaves me no choice but to assume that you either haven't tried many ROMs or are wildly exaggerating.
Most of the ROMs that I have used work fine for both SMS and LTE. If you post a better description of your situation, what ROMs you have tried, specific errors you had, etc, then we'd have a much better basis to help you.

phoenix ROM v2.0 & SpeedROM v4 DEODEXED. No error except APN settings are non existant, same with seeing the LTE feature on the network type at all, & when sending a text it times out and says try again with no error except did not send try again.

That implies that you have searched exhaustively without productive results. But you've only tried two ROMs. You are factually mistaken about the first ROM, and I'd wager about the second one too.
You said that there are no APN settings in Phoenix 2.0. I just reinstalled Phoenix and the APN settings are present in the expected place
Settings > Connections > More networks > Mobile networks > APN
SMS works fine as well.
For your LTE issues, you said that you are using a 900P model, but didn't say what carrier you use. You have a Sprint phone, so confirm that Sprint has LTE in your particular area and that your SIM /account is provisioned for LTE.
If you are using the handset on a different carrier then your LTE problems are due to using an incompatible phone, not ROM bugs. Sprint is a CDMA carrier, with limited LTE and even more limited compatibility with LTE on GSM carriers. This is not a ROM limitation, but caused because you have a CDMA version of the S5 that isn't configured for much more than the specific bands that Sprint uses.
Note that the specs for the 900P say that it can access LTE bands 25/26/41.
Now compare that to some GSM carriers
TMobile LTE bands 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/14/17
ATT LTE bands 1/2/3/4/5/7/17
Bell LTE bands 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/17
900F LTE bands 1/2/3/5/7/8/20
Or CDMA carriers
Verizon LTE bands 4/13
US Cellular LTE bands 2/4/5/12/17
You can see that most GSM carriers are largely compatible in the LTE bands that they use. The CDMA carriers in contrast have few bands in common with each other or GSM carriers.
In particular, your 900P doesn't appear to have any LTE bands in common with any of the other carriers. So the only way you will get LTE is if you are using Sprint in an area where Sprint has LTE service. Due to 900P restrictions, not the ROM.
.
Wrong LTE is available on sprint & in my area. And APN is non existent when using those ROMs. So its not my phone unless they don't support my phone
Good luck with your issues.

This appears to show that if you flash the U firmware, you should be fine (if the information from this website is correct).

It shows that the 935U is capable of Band 3 (FDD 1800) and Band 40 (TDD 2300) for LTE.

From what others say, the U firmware runs better since it doesn't have all of the Verizon bloatware. I guess it's up to you whether you want to or not, but I would recommend flashing the U firmware since you don't really lose anything except HD calling and visual voicemail. You'll be able to use your hotspot for free since it won't check to see if you're subscribed, and you will get updates from Samsung rather than from Verizon.

There is if you root your phone and flash on a different rom that's based on U's firmware but adds Verizon's extra tweaks and still no bloatware. But then you run into the problem of having horrible performance on your phone, some people don't mind, others flash back to stock. Pick your poison I guess.
I got a galaxy S7 edge SM-G935FD what do I need to do to make it work on verizon?
Verizon is a CDMA network and S7 Edge for Verizon was built only for CDMA networks (https://www.unlockunit.com/blog/cdma-networks/)
You can check your phone's frequencies, but I suggest that before placing any unlocking order, check with your local carriers if they support that phone.
Make sure you have all this info beforehand so you won't have to pay for a useless unlocking.

Verizon 3G on SM-G950U1

Just purchased the unlocked version of the S8. I'm able to get an LTE connection just fine, but I've yet to establish a 3G connection in places that I can on the Verizon version of the S8. Has anyone on Verizon, been able to get a 3G connection on the unlocked version? To be clear, SM-G950U1 is the unlocked Snapdragon US variant, that just started shipping on 5/27, not the unlocked international exynos variant.

No, there is not. In fact, the locations of settings within the settings menus are laid out completely different. There is an advanced menu, and within that menu, the only thing phone related is an option to "identify spam," which is a replacement for Verizon's Caller ID service, only it's native to the S8 and doesn't cost anything. It appears that it's the "hiya" app, baked into the phone.
I have not had an opportunity to visit an LTE dead zone. However, in the past, when I have exited my parking garage or elevator (where I've dropped coverage) my phone's typically show a 3G connection first, and then moments later they will then show a 4G connection. With this phone, it takes longer to connect, and when it does, it connects to 4G, bypassing the 3G part of the process I described. That's what brought me here.
That said, I think I've answered my question:
According to Samsung's website the US variant of the unlocked S8 supports these bands/frequencies:
Network
Frequencies and Data Type
B1(2100), B2(1900), B3(1800), B4(AWS), B5(850), B7(2600), B8(900), B12(700), B13(700), B17(700), B18(800), B19(800), B20(800), B25(1900), B26(800), B28(700), B29(700), B30(2300), B66(AWS-3)
According to Wikipedia, Verizon operates it's 2G/3G network over B0(850) and B1(1900). Of all the bands Samsung listed, I believe the Verizon ones are all LTE.
So, I guess the answer is that the unlocked S8 does not support Verizon's 2G/3G network, and I better hope that I don't end up in an area where Verizon only offers 3G. HTC's new U11 is the same way.

Direct from Samsung. I haven't, but my understanding is that you're on your own when it comes to unlocked devices. I don't think it does support CDMA, now that I've researched it more. See prior post explaining why.

I've seen your explanation, and it's very logical. The only problem is it directly contradicts what the back of a 955U1 box says - "Wireless voice, data, and messaging services compatible with most major U.S. GSM and CDMA networks." It also contradicts how Samsung did the S7/S7 Edge, being compatible with all four networks in the U.S.
Again, I'm not saying your wrong, but given that the G955U is the model used on all U.S. carriers and has full band compatibility, it just doesn't make sense that Samsung would do this. And yes, I know, Samsung doesn't have to make sense...

Try the dialer codes to see what RF bands are enabled. Dial *#2263# in the phone dialer to get the menu. Dialing *#0011# will give you current status of Cell radio.
I'm certain the phone has the required radios and antenna to support all Carrier network cell types but whether it's enabled is another story.
Here is the my Advanced calling menu

I've seen your explanation, and it's very logical. The only problem is it directly contradicts what the back of a 955U1 box says - "Wireless voice, data, and messaging services compatible with most major U.S. GSM and CDMA networks." It also contradicts how Samsung did the S7/S7 Edge, being compatible with all four networks in the U.S.
Again, I'm not saying your wrong, but given that the G955U is the model used on all U.S. carriers and has full band compatibility, it just doesn't make sense that Samsung would do this. And yes, I know, Samsung doesn't have to make sense...

I didn't even see that text on the box until you pointed it out. That definitely implies that it should work, unless the CDMA support is limited to Sprint.

Do those dialer codes work for you? I can't get them to work on neither the Verizon SM-G950U nor the unlocked U1 that I have.
And yes, that's what my advanced calling menu on my Verizon S8 looks like as well. The unlocked version doesn't have that. Only an option to turn on VoLTE. No Video nor WiFi calling. Also, there's no visual voicemail, which sucks.
The codes do not work for me on my VZW phone., but works on my TMO phone.
I'm wondering if it's SIM dependent.

I was able to test another unlocked version today, and it had no problems connecting to Verizon 3G, so I guess I just have a bad device. If anyone else runs into this issue, exchange it.
Thanks for your guy's help.
Im on verizon + G950U1, and I dont think this VoLTE calls does anything. Im not getting the crystal clear HD i used to get using my moto x pure. Or is it all in my head?

Try resetting network settings and reboot your device.
Stumbled upon this thread while researching an unlocked S8 / SM-G950U1 for use on Verizon.
I found this web site, showing it is fully compatible with Big red.

Thanks for replying. ..Does the unlocked version contain both the American and Global bands? Coz I see there are few bands missing in American version which are there in global and vice versa.
Thanks!
No it does not, the American version is missing the global bands

Okk..thanks...Got my Jio sim...Signal looks solid...for the first few minutes... but then it started fluctuating very much .. maybe changing bands every now and then coz jio operates on 3 bands 3,5and40. But as 40 is not present in American model, it switches between band 3(1800) and 5(850)very frequently...I got to know this from an app... So should I lock the band on 3/5 any of them(from network signal guru app) ? Will it stop fluctuating then?
Thanks!
What's the name of the app you use?

Thanks... There are few issues I'm facing.... Got two more Sims voda and bsnl ... Voda gives no signal as soon as I insert it and bsnl is working well but most of the times I cannot place/get calls.... And according to that link these two are fully compatible with American model..:crying:
I've noticed in bsnl that as soon as I toggle the mobile data ON, then I can get/make calls but as soon as I put if Off, again problem starts.
