AMOLED Light "Bleed" on the sides - Galaxy S6 Edge+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I'm about to soon pull the trigger on either the Galaxy Note 5 or a S6 Edge+. What I have observed from playing with some display units in best buy is that both screens of both edge phones (s6 edge, s6 edge+) have this weird light glow, or light bleed in the curved edges. I had the phones on high brightness, and was mostly on a white background (browser). It somewhat bothers me, and it makes me want to pull the trigger on a Note 5 even faster. However I would like to know if this issue is widespread to all phones, even the international models.
Another question, do you guys believe that the Edge+ will have better development than the Note 5?

Back light bleeding is normal in some circumstances but if you get easily annoyed by that then maybe you should run some test first before purchasing a phone.
Regarding the matter between Edge+ and note 5. I believe that they will feed both devices the same treatment. Since focusing only in one will agitate the opposite user. imo

maybe it's just a user bug.

He might be taking about the new power save option that does not allow you to manually deselect the screen.

S6 display discussion.

We all know that the Galaxy S6 will sport a QHD Super AMOLED display just like the Galaxy S5 LTE-A and Galaxy Note 4 before it. But the question remains, will this be the second generation of Super AMOLED QHD displays that they're employing? Meaning they would be more brighter, energy efficient and possibly color accurate over the ones in the S5/N4?
After all, they shrunk down the battery capacity for a thinner body and made it non-removable for a more premium unibody. So the optimization compensation has to come from somewhere, right? And between the Galaxy and Note releases, they've always improved on the display technology in some way. Let's all post updates as more information leaks over time.
Definitely will be much improved over S5, I think everything points to this being brand new tech, although the Note 4's screen was so exceptional that no one has complained of its quality, so even if the same one, it should be perfect. That said, I estill expected an updated panel since they had to make a new one to match the size anyway
I have Note 4. The screen is AMAZING. I don't know what could Samsung improve really.
It has a small problem though - it changes color very slightly at even the slightest angle, which might be the deal breaker for some (for me it's OK for a phone, would hate it on a TV though). It might be interesting to see if S6 has the same problem.

I'd like to see AMOLED screens hit at least 400 cm/nits of brightness when displaying content with 100% white average. Right now the best the Note 4 can do in that situation is 340 cm/nits. That's why I hope this S6 panel is an improvement and not just taken from the Note 4. Now that TouchWiz uses more white backgrounds, it won't be as energy efficient over the long term for having the display on and I certainly would like whites to look more white with better brightness on Average Picture Level

I'd take an AMOLED white over an LCD black any day.

AM I the only person who thought the Note 4's display looked somewhat grainy? That and I often found a few models to have pinkish screens.

They went from being inaccurately calibrated with yellow or green tints to being more proper on white point. They (QHD displays) display whites more accurately than most of the high-end LCD panels. The problem is, they don't look as good because they can't get very bright due to hardware limitations at the moment. AMOLED is still a premature technology that has improved tremendously in a few short years on the market, but more efficiency needs to be tuned in.
I prefer 1080p as all my videos are in that resolution. It's going to look worse upscaled in this. Also, not sure if eyes can even notice a difference on a phone call.

Short of pressing your face up against the screen and trying to look for flaws, it won't look any worse. 1080p is too many pixels for a 5" screen as it is. QHD is pure overkill.

My point is I prefee it to display videos at native resolution.
Then I guess the S6 isn't for you. Lucky there are other options that are FHD still.
Improve the white coulor its really bad.
People always think they can't do better but still, they always do, they always manage to find a way to improve the technology.
Colour accuracy on the S6 doesn't seem to be as good as the Note 4 but the maximum brightness on the S6 should be a lot brighter than N4 (Samsung claims max 600 nits).
This data is for the edge, but I would think the S6 would be similar.

I agree it could be, as well it could be that the testing application isn't compatible yet with the new hardware? Anyways I tested a similar application with my Nexus 6 and I get responsiveness right to the edge. I sure would like to know the application he was using. I would also like to see this test on the s6 edge as well. I'm hoping this isn't a major issue as I have pre-ordered both the s6 and s6 edge.

help me pick s6 edge plus over note 5

so i think the Edge 6 plus in gold just look phenomenal but there's something in me that says the S pen on the note 5 is more practical then the edge ticker. i went in the VZW store yesterday and i couldnt get the edge info ticker or other options to work right, but im attributing that to the VZW demo that kept popping up on the screen. I know the edge screen doesnt do much, but does it work like it's supposed do?
i know the phones are almost identical besides pen and edge....
any other reasons i should pick the 6+ over the note 5?

no trying to decide
Samsung S6 Edge+ Plus is faster in benchmark
Gold colour is the best
screen looks more beautiful, curved edge on both sides. 3D effect
better battery life
edge s6+ is more lighter. not heavy for its size.
are you going to use the S pen for 1 or 2 weeks then never use it again?
.
Just swithched from N5. Love the looks, form factor and the screen is more accurate.

If you want the Stylus and its features go Note 5. If you want the sexiest design in market go Edge+. The Edge+ is slightly faster on benches and has slightly better battery life due to the lack of all the stylus features that run in the background. Do not expect features for the edges they are there for sexiness and design and I love them. Swiping from the edges feels really good on them. The Edge+ in Gold is really dope and eyecatcher all my friends ask me immediately what's this phone and want to touch it. Also the Edge+ feels more compact on hand and despite its screen size it's really small. If it feels slippery on your hand and the Edges are hard for you to grip on I will suggest you to use a transparent TPU case which will not hide the sexiness of the phone and will help a lot the grip. Despite their design differences and the stylus internally those 2 are exactly the same.
I bought the edge 6+ because I couldn't find a 64gb Note 5. I looked at both, the edge is sexier.... At a price. It's an uncomfortable phone to hold, this after two months of it. It's so beautiful that you want to hold it all the time though. Also, the edges catch light differently, and the keyboard is not so accurate to use.
Practically, if I had had the Note 5 in 64gb in front of me I'd have chosen that.
32gb on either, despite what people say, is too little.

Nexus 6P screen problem?

Hello everyone!
I saw lots of posts on the internet about the nexus 6P having dome sort of tint either pink or yellow. I do not know if mine does that. I mean looking at it straight it looks ok. But my problem is that at the slightest tilt of the phone the color change a bit to something a little greenish/bluish. Also at big angles the screen has a rainbow effect that i didn't notice on a s6 edge, for example.
I do not know if this is normal. It is a bit annoying because having the google keyboard which is a greyish color when i tilt it a bit it gets a little greenish. Is that normal? What should I do? I checked the manufacturing date and it is in Octomber.
The model is a 32GB Graphite.
Best regards!
Anyone?
That's amoled screens for you
It looks kinda weird. I checked with a friend's s6 edge and we t does not act like this. Mine is like...white...tilt it right greenish...tilt it left...greenish....tilt it a lot on either side...rainbow. Is an amoled screen supposed to do this?
Yes I bet your friends s6 edge has it to some extent or in a different colour. I've has 4 s6 phones 2 tab s 10.5 and 1 tab s2. They all have it to a certain extent. Some worse than others but a slight tint is the best your going to get
I have the same issue too on my 6P! And I also happen to own an S6 edge, just like you've mentioned, the Samsung phone had no color shifting. I don't really think an AMOLED is supposed to do this.

I think you should ask for a replacement. My unit seems to be not as bad as yours. I only get that color shifting at higher viewing angles.
I think your obsessing and looking at it too much try another one

I noticed it on mine immediately. I had an s3 and it never happened on that so I'm not sure you can blame it on amoled. Also, it was so bad in mine, it took away any advantage of having amoled screen. It was worse than any lcd screen I had in recent years. I returned and got a refund.
Too bad, 6P is a great phone.

Why is no one talking about the color shifting on the display?

I'm shocked to see no one mentioning this, I can only think of Erica griffin's review for the s6 edge.... the s6 edge had the same issue and unfortunately the s7 edge has it too :crying: , the display has one fatal flaw in my opinion , there's very visible color shifting on the "edges" you can see very visible blue lines on the each side of the display, where the glass is curved , it's VERY apparent on every app with a white bakcground like the browser, calendar, messaging app :crying:
Doesn't it bother you? For me it's an absolute deal breaker :crying:
Doesn't bother me. I OCD about things, but that wasn't one of them.

Curved glass will always reflact light. Light changes direction, leading to a change in color due to the change in waveform.

The think is I really like phablets , I have a nexus 6p currently and I don't want to wait for the Galaxy Note 5 , the s7 edge specs are already perfect, perfect size, I hate that I obsess about certain things, but I cannot unsee that color shifting
I don't know why are you calling it a fatal flaw, maybe you don't like it, but it's not a flaw, stop trying getting attention, buy another flawless phone so now you know why nobody is talking about it,the problem is in your head sorry
What color shifting?
I think you're seeing things.
Like others have said, it's physics.

Wait, are we talking about the slight "blue" on the sides caused by the fact that on each side it is tapered? Ummm, that isn't a flaw, it's physics like many have stated here. I nit pick over many things (I packed up and returned three 65" UHD TV'S in 2 weeks over "minor" issues.) and I can't understand the point of this thread. It is not a color that is displayed or "lines", it is there because the shape of the screen changes so obviously so would the appearance of anything being displayed on the edges. Wait, does the OP even own one? Pretty sure the solution in not getting an edge variant.

Relax. Erica has relented and even called it a "feature" in one of her vids. She has accepted it...I hope you find the will to accept it also. Stay strong.
I didnt notice the blue lines till reading this thread. You have to look close to see them. Not a deal breaker screen is still gorgeous.
Erica needs to use devices to tell you how good the screen is I use my eyes. She's always nit picked on previous amoled pentile screens even tho the only way to tell it was a pentile screen was using a magnifying glass!! Most people including her said amoled screens are the best especially when comparing side by side to other phones but she still complained about something that isn't visible with the naked eye. As for the s7 edge.. It's a curved screen.. If you think the curve is a flaw you should get the s7. The curv will always have that "flaw" when the phone is looked at from a certain angle.
S7 has the best display of any phone. Measured. By a professional:
http://www.displaymate.com/Galaxy_S7_ShootOut_1.htm
Due to the way the glass/touch-lamination is done and due to the polarization filter, ALL phones so far show some shifting when viewed at an angle.
Regardless, S7 has the best display right now that money can buy.
You can always opt for a crappier display, like the one on iPhone (tested inferior).

That's not what I said :/ , I just said she's the only one mentioning it, I just said it's a deal breaker for me, then again I am extremely picky and susceptible to those things because I'm a designer , I spend hours trying to fix sharp edges, looking at screens and so on ...

Are the edges worth it?

I currently have a Galaxy S6, and I'm trying to decide if I should upgrade to an S7 edge or a regular S7. Is the edge functionality worth the extra cost?
Thanks!

If You like and need better battery and biger screen go for it. Edge is the last thing except visuals ?
i just made the same switch as your talking about. i was on the regular s6 and made the jump to the s7 edge and i love it so far. i love LOVE the battery life as ive been on a single charge starting from 4 am this morning and its 10 20 now and i still have 24 % left . my s6 wouldve been dead by now . the only thing so far that ive noticed myself doing is actually not using the edges as theyre intended and from what i can gather is simply because im not used to having them. i love the phone and im sure you wont be disappointed! good luck in your choice!

I like some of the functionality of the edge. The only problem I've had with the edge is I use SwiftKey as my keyboard and I set it up with the number line on top of the keyboard. Sometimes, it's difficult to press the number 1 because it's right on the edge. I think I can shrink the keys a little in SwiftKey so it'll fit better, but I haven't tried it yet.

I tested S7 edge at the Samsung experience booths, the camera is marginally better on S7 vs S6 in regular lighting, under low light scenarios, it takes brighter images with less noise. The aspect ratio is 4:3 though so you'll get vertical black bars on the screen when you review the pics you took since most screens including the phone are 16:9

I've had the s4, note 3, note 4,note 5,and now s7 edge, the edges are cool, but super annoying when typing with 1 hand, because I have a tendency to hit letters on the edge of screen when typing. So far, I believe the note 5 was a better phone, but then again I was in love with the pen features.

My last 3 devices have been edge variants, note edge, s6e+, and s7e. I absolutely loved the functionality of my note edge but had them totally disabled on s6e+ cause they kinda sucked. Now with s7e I'm using the edge panels again, Samsung has definitely improved the stock panels and some development on new panels are ok. They still have a long way to go but there's enough function now for me to use them. Plus the edge is a sexy beast looks wise.
