Startup tab in Task Manager empty?? - Windows 10, 8, 7, XP etc.

After a routine and uneventful upgrade to W10 Home from 8.1, and with no issues or problems encountered (so far), I can't understand why the Startup tab in Task Manager will not show anything. I still have all the programs that I had in 8.1 and I have installed a few new things since the upgrade, but Startup tab only has a greyed out "there are no startup items to display".
Anybody else seeing this???
Well.......if just a few of you reading this post (67 now), would kindly look at your startup tab in Task Manager and tell me whether yours is also empty or whether it is populated normally w/ programs that are going to run at startup, I would appreciate it. That's why I ask the question.......thanks.

Mine is not empty and after the upgrade the startup programs remains as in 8.1..
Can't you even add a shortcut to startup folder (C:\Users\[YOUR_USER_NAME]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup) ?

You can add apps by scrolling on the ones you want to add in the program list (after hitting the start menu) and right clicking on them and selecting "pin to start menu." Once they are in the start menu you can drag them wherever you want by holding down on the left button of your mouse. You can asleep resize them by right clicking on your mouse and selecting resize. Your frequently used apps will populate as you go and those too are movable. Hope that helps you.

Random "missing shortcuts" in start memu

I noticed this the other day and it happened again today on my 2 day old 8125.
Everything is going great, and then after some time some of my shortcuts in my start menu just up and vanish. For example, my calculator is no longer in the start menu. It's still in my windows folder, and I can still use the calculator, but my shortcut to it is missing. Therefor, to start the program I need to use the file explorer to navigate to the windows folder and launch it from there (or, of course, copy the file and create a new shortcut to bring it back to the start menu).
Same goes for about 7 other applications (about 1/3) of what I have installed. They're on my device (and some on the SD card), but their shortcuts from the start menu have simply vanished. Any ideas?
This has happened to me as well. Cant find Pocket IE or Calculator! :?
Maybe we can figure out why this is happening. It's probably a third party app bug or something.
I don't remember about the first time it happened, but the 2nd time it happened I noticed some (not all) of the links in my "app" section of iLauncher were missing. Those missing from iLauncher were also missing in my start menu. The other programs in the different tabs in iLauncher were fine. I only had this problem with 1 section of iLauncher which makes me think iLauncher may have caused this issue. Do you have iLauncher installed?
total noob
Hi Guitarlp,
Sorr to be such a noob but how can i find out if i have ILauncher installed?
You don't then. It's a 3rd part app from SBSH.

Small tip!

Heres how you can organise your programs view (Start->Programs)...
1. Use your normal file explorer and move all your shortcuts into separate folders (stuff like Media, Utils, Connectivity, Office etc.)
2. You can assign an icon for each folder by creating a shortcut in each folder and naming the shortcut as "icon.lnk"
You can do this easily by choosing any one of the available shortcuts and duplicating it...and then renaming the file to icon.lnk
3. I've used VJDialerSms to create a folder called speed dials with sub folders having all my important speed dial shortcuts in separate categories!
silly tips, but i just took some time out and did it....now i have a cleaner and less cluttered Programs menu which makes seaching for my apps so much easier!
Well worth the time spent imo
Cheers,
San
Please note that an extensive start menu will slow the machine down. This is because the operating system will have to search for the icons in each of the linked executables.
For example if you have Skype in your start menu (directly or as a shortcut) you will notice a long delay before the start menu opens. This is because the icon is at the end of the executable, and the Skype executable is over 5 MB big.
So the answer is to prune your start menu from all programs you don't ever need, rather than to fill it with nice to have stuff.
I personally use SmallMenu. What I did is leave everything as it is on my device and copied the shortcuts on my SD card and sort them all out there in different folders. I then use SmallMenu's function to launch them there. By doing it this way, I have the functionality of the Start Menu plus the flexibility of SmallMenu. No delays in lauching either. I was hesitant to disarranged anything in my Start Menu because some applications pops up a warning that it is needed to stay in that folder, although you can still move it and it seems to work anyway, but it still makes me paranoid that it may cause any dead shortcuts or functionality.
Why not give GSPocketMagic++ a try?
(use the english cab from the download)
Still the best around. Also works on WM2005.
Then in Option > Setting... > Program Menu point folder to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs and organize your menu structure in there. Also select "Break menu items"
Also the Control Panel applets are directly selectable from GSPocketMagic++. You can still use the original "start menu" if you tap slightly right from the GSPocketMagic++ menu button.
Cheers

GSPocketMagic++ configuration.

Hi, first off im new to the XDA EXEC so be gentle , I've already unlocked and updated the device and now I'm just getting use to customizing it.
I've installed GSPocketMagic and although i can get it running theres a few things im unsure of.
1. it seems to slow the boot up of the device considerably, don't know why or if that might be some remnance of O2 stuff kicking around on the device.
2. The icons don't seem to blend into the themes properly. For instance the close buttons seem to be of a different colour and you can easily see that. On the main today screen when no apps are running I have an obvious discoloured sqaure in the top right hand corner. I'm guessing this might have something to do with the bmp pallettes for the images? anyone done anything about this?
3. Skining the menu , on the download site is shows its possible but i've had no luck.
it looks like a good app but its just not reaching what i need any ideas on how to configure it properly as so far from what i've seen theres limited information on it and i've not found any translations etc.

Goto Start menu > Option > Setting... and and "play" with the settings of GSPocketMagic++
Cheers
i've had a play with the settings already and could really find what I was looking for the most i've managed to do is change the startup menu button to an image but it didn't resolve the fact that the button images for say close are off colour (even if you install the VGA xscale version (as i stated before).
Also I can't see how you skin the menu so it'd look similar to that of the existing menu bar (just for continuity of the plug in). Then finally theres the fact on boot its terribly slow to start up with this addition (or so it seems). However its still a vanillia(ish) device so i could be som O2 crap kicking around that i haven't removed yet?
dunno..hence the thread.
Smallmenu and GSPocketMagic will take quite a while to generate the icon cache on first launch. Just let it do it. It doesn't do it again after the first launch unless you manually refresh. It takes about 30 seconds for me.
V
If you goto Goto Start menu > Option > Setting... and directly close de Setting page it wil refresh the cache again. You can time it how log it takes. I have about 30 shortcuts in the menu (which I pointed to \windows\start menu\programs and not the standard folder), also to the SD card, and it takes about 4 to 5 secs to refresh it.
installing GSPocketMagic
Hello downloaded it
How do I install it on the Exec
Thx.

lol
is there an update 2 this? where can i find skins?

[REQ] HTC Taskmanager improvement

Hi There,
If you ever used the "Close Button" plug-in from Spb Mobile Plus you prolly know what I mean...
The HTC Taskmanager looks all nice, I like it, but its only accessible on the Today Screen. Is there a way to make it accessible even when you're not on the today screen?
Sometimes when you're doing stuff you want to "alt-tab" to another program and this is an easy way to do it, or when you want to close another/all other programs.
I hope there's a solution because it really is an improvement to the taskmanager.
me too
sorry, no help here. I can only say "me too". I was actually just thinking about this today. I've had this phone for a few months, and it just today occurred to mr today that you can't close other open programs without going back to the today screen, only option is to "x" button back to today screen or hope that what you seek to close is in your start menu under 'recent items'.
any help or development would be super appreciated, thanks all.
There is a shortcut in the Settings folder in the Systems tab. However, I expect you don't want to go through all of that when you want to use it. As an alternative, you could use file explorer and go into the Windows folder, find the Task Manager program in there, copy it and past a shortcut in the Windows/Start Menu folder. Then it would be on your Start Menu. You would need to remove one other item if you were then over the allowed maximum number of items in there.
Is that accessible enough?
I'd rather not put it in my start menu cus there are other "important" shortcuts in there...
I'd rather have it in the upper right corner...
You could use WkTask
the best free taskmanager there is (not working on wm6.5)

Click to collapse
I tried it and I like it, Is there a way to make a backup of my settings?
It seems the program doesnt work as i wished it would. I worked with it for a while and I like the concept alot, but there's a major flaw. Sometimes when I make adjustments to, lets say, my alarm settings (winmo clock/alarms setings), and when I press [ok] the window minimizes (I set the one click to minimize), there's no way you can apply the changes because it will keep on running on the background. If I choose to close it then the changes wont apply. This occurs to many other programs I use in simular occasions when you need to press [ok] to apply settings.
I would still have a solution to the HTC taskbar though. I think I would prefer it over the WkTask taskmanager.
