The Note5 Camera thread - what type of sensor do you have? - Galaxy Note5 General

Hello and welcome to the Note5 camera thread, here we can share and discuss what's possible with the 16 megapixel back camera with optical image stabilization and the 5 megapixel shooter on the front with wide-angle lens.
One of the cool new features besides DNG RAW capture that arrived with the 5.1.1 update on the S6 and S6 edge earlier is shutter speed control between 1/24000 and 10 seconds. FINALLY. This means better overall control of photography which can only be a good thing. Considering camera2 API apps such as Manual Camera and others more-or-less work with the S6 and S6 edge, we can expect a wider range of controls with these 3rd party apps. How much, we'll find out soon, please post whatever information you find. The following screenshot is from PhoneArena's hands-on.

Now the big question: what kind of sensor(s) does the Note5 have? Do we still have Sony Exmor and Samsung ISOCELL variants? Is it the new, smaller Samsung ISOCELL sensor?
One of the possibilities to find this out, suggested by PhoneArena and others, is installing AIDA64 on the phone and go the the Devices / Camera ID option to see if there's a SONY_IMX(xxx) string or a SLSI (Samsung). Please do so. I'll be looking to post some images taken with the camera and if I can put my hands on this glass/metal beast, I'll take some shots myself.

Are there any hardware improvements over the S6 camera or is it just the same?

That's something we're looking to find out.

these two screen shots was taken on 2 galaxy note 5 (Thailand model)
which show that the both camera sensors are the same as founded in Galaxy S6/S6edge

And now a couple of samples, first three provided by Samsung. I'd imagine the 1st was converted from RAW as it weighs in at 15 MBs.

can you share camera apk?

same in TH rear is Sony and front SS

I was always impressed with my wifes S6 camera. A little disappointed that they did not top the S6 other than a software update to help OIS (that no doubt the S6 will get since its the same internals). Impressive shots all around.

What app did you use to check that? Thanks.

My AT&T Note 5 has the same Sony rear and Samsung front sensor as my S6 Edge does. I do like having the little manual exposure slider and shutter speed control on the Note 5 though.

I got Sony's too

Has anyone noticed that Samsung Dropped the GREYSCALE feature in the camera setting. I don't know about you but i take lots of photos and take at-least a 3rd of them in greyscale! I have the USA ATT version.

Mine is also SONY

Sony (TMO, picked up the 21st in san francisco)

Note5 from Israel also Sony sensor.

So no ISOCELL back camera so far. Interestingly the Galaxy A8 got the new Samsung ISOCELL (S5K3P3) sensor many expected to show up in the Note5.

Sony in back. Isocell up front

Nice to see you here BoneXDA(I'm still using S6, no upgrade to Note5, just take a look here). Not the same model though, A8 used 16MP 1.0um sensor probably 1/3" size.

camera quality

I got my note and it is really great but the camera is very bad I think it is a matter of configuration, because the Colours are very poor in the photos and the contrast very low
I've got Galaxy Note on 11 Nov 2011, I noticed that when switching on Camera, targeting any white wall, I notice Columns / Bars of shadows are moving like curtain or Smoke from left to right of the screen specially in a low light places, also a pink spot in the middle of the screen.
Is this normal? if not, What I have to do?

Ahem, I would return that unit, take a look at this picture taken yesterday, all default values on camera, untouched, uploaded directly from phone.
Hello,
First of all, be sure that you are using the 8MP / 3264x2448 resolution.

Second, clean the camera, Maybe there is a fingerprint or dust on it.
And lets see how it goes with you =)
off topic, but I only noticed today (after 2 weeks of ownership) that there is a transparent plastic film over the lens which I never spotted when I unboxed it. I've taken quite a few photos and I had not noticed any quality issues - in fact I was very pleased with the crisp clear images it was producing.
I'm actually considering leaving the film in place for now as it protects the lens (which is otherwise pretty exposed). I figure that until I start to notice image problems due to the film getting roughed up, it's doing no real harm I guess I should really try the cam with the film removed to see what photos are *meant* to look like before I decide on that course of action though!
The camera works best with abundant light. The outdoor picture posted earlier in this thread looks great for a cellphone camera. However my indoor pic with low light and no flash is grainy and lacks contrast.

You can not expect good non-grainy pictures in low-light from any camera that it's smaller than a SLR. It's a fundamental law of nature (quantum variations and Poisson distribution of photons). You need a big sensor and big lens to capture more light, something you are not going to get on a phone.
But the camera is good for daylight and captures colors very well (oversaturated, but you can lower that and get a more natural look).
Just to add some numbers, check this image from Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SensorSizes.svg
Most superzoom / cheap cameras have 6 mm wide sensors. The biggest you're going to find on a compact (retractile lens) camera is 8 mm. Big cameras use APS-C (23 mm wide).
A cellullar phone has 1 mm-wide sensor. Galaxy Note camera has 8 mpixels, but each pixel is hundreds of times smaller than the ones on a SLR. So much more noise. This can NOT be solved in any way.

By using a 1/1.83" sensor; almost the same size as the sensor found in well-regarded compact cameras like the Panasonic LX3/5, the Olympus XZ-1, the Canon G12, S90, S95, and S100.

Sony Xperia S Camera comparison vs Arc

I went to a Sony Mobile "Insider on Tour" event tonight and got the chance to have a look at the S, P, and U.. I also took 2 photo's one with my current arc, and one with the S.. I've stuck them together, side by side and here's the result.. The camera on the S is incredible.
[EDIT : FYI - I took both pictures with default settings.. and the S photo was taken from standby to test the quick shot feature.. it took the photo in under 2 seconds.. easily. The 2 photo's were cropped and I used the left hand side of each to make this image, no post processing on the image quality at all.. just cropped and added the labels.]

Interesting. Look at the seat numbers, and the seats at the back... The Arc resolves them, the S does not.
The S may have better shadow noise, but it looks like the Arc has better detail. Of course, for the S, you did not have that bright spotlight in the frame to throw off metering either

I think he cropped that out of the S' photo.
Not a fair comparison IMO. Would be a much better one without those light sources.
Anyways, it does seem the picture taken by arc to have more resolved detail.
Haha, Arc seems better!
Could you post some more pics, please?
Snapdragon S3 keeps me away from the new devices, but the camera might change that.

I did crop the two photos...just took the left side of each.
The handling of the light sources was what made it such a good comparison..
I only had it in my hand for 2 minutes so only managed to take that photo and Bluetooth it to my arc..
The s handled amazingly well.. And the camera really was very impressive..

I have unfortunately read a review for the Xperia s that states the camera as having the same jpeg compression as the arc s, ray and neo. I truly hope this isn't the case as I was extremely let down but the quality from the arc s camera.
I believe this review might have been posted on Engadget today?
If anyone has some proper hands on experience with some outdoors shots compared to arc s, iPhone 4s and sgs2, please post your findings on which has the better detail and quality, megapixels withstanding.

New flagship devices use the S4 (like HTC One X). It's as fast as the Tegra 3. Also the rumoured Hayabusa/Mint from Sony (autumn flagship) will have the S4.

Maybe because of time constraints to test S4 platform for Q1 release? Xperia S is now on sale. HTC S4 devices will come this Q2.
Waiting for an S4 device with Sony branding!

I'm toying with the idea of getting one of these cameras, maybe it's a bit too soon to ask but, can some of you with the camera, post some photos you've taken with it, real world photos from actual owners and not just press shots.
Not really fussed if you've used the built in apps for editing the images you post, as it will just add to the "things you can do with this device" I just want to get the opinions from actual users who have spent their hard earned cash on it and get their points of view about their experience with it, what the performance is like, how good/poor is the daily use image quality of the camera like, whether you think it was worth the £399 etc... etc....
TIA.

I've bought the camera on the very first day of availability, 7th November, directly in London's Samsung flagship store at 5pm when the boxes were brought in I might be the first to have bought the camera officially...
However, on my Flickr account I've collected some pictures that I've made since then.
The lens is amazing, the CMOS chip not so, zooming into pictures details become just a mess of pixels. Or should I say mash?
But it's just a point-and-shooter and it does very good pictures at low light. Unless you don't zoom in too much, that is.

That's your decision... but both of them are not comparable to the Galaxy Camera in my opinion as they don't come with Android/touchscreen/3G.
I think only somebody who really wants those features will buy the Galaxy not because of its picture quality, which is good but far from perfect.

Lol. That had me laughing thanks.
But to respond to the op, tomorrow should be the announcement of the note 5 and the next edge device(which should be the s6 edge plus) that doesn't necessarily mean release. Prob start taking pre orders though. Im picking up another note edge tomorrow to replace the hole in my heart so i am gunna take a good look at both of them and will prob be ditching my s6 for one or the other. Guessing the note 5 since i should have a note edge already. Unless the s6 plus blows me away which i dont see happening.

The Samsung teaser said it is a Galaxy Event, not Note Event though Note5 will also announce together you clearly see Note5 with SPen in the picture. The big question is an unknown third device there with 6.5~7" size, I'll call it as S6 Ultra(much like the Sony Z1 Ultra 6.44").
I owned Z Ultra from Sony. It was the best device ( first in the world with sd800) except Note series at the moment. The only negative was his camera and the lack of led light. Otherwise awesome. Maybe it's Samsung time now...

We are yet to draw more detailed conclusions about the Galaxy Note5’s camera performance, but the initial impressions are for a snappy camera that captures great images. We also noticed that the double-click quick activation shortcut is present here as well, and Samsung has added the option to control shutter speed in the Pro camera mode.
But still a good news there, I think we'll have manual shutter speed in Pro mode soon.

huuu no sorry it's what i see in samples => when you see the teddy bear photo or the face (of the girl) photo... there is a blurry filter.
And also, i see a jepg oily threatment. Especially in low light (hello lg g3 effect).
I own a G4 and no one can deny it's one of the best camera phones on the market. Even though i've made some great photos with it, must say that i'm very impressed with the S7 so far. I would say that S7 is probbably the best camera phone at the moment. Only thing that bothers me a bit is the 4:3 ratio... Anyway, we should all wait for some realworld tests between S7, G5, Mi5, Xperia X and others with finalized software...

it's ok but idk if that big upgrade over S6, probably is. this photos does not do much justice, you can get amazing photos from the Note 5 in low light SPECIALLY with tripod, what s7 can do with tripod? can't wait to find out.

I'm pretty sure this is the compromise of the drop to 12mp. Instead of keeping 16mp @ 16:9, they cropped to 4:3 and kept the vertical resolution. I'm just relieved it's not 12mp AND 16:9, I don't think the image would be as good.
According to the camera options on the Samsung S6 Edge Plus, these are the two highest resolutions:
16m (16:9) 5312x2988
12m (4:3) 3984x2988
I have a feeling Samsung just dropped the top option for the S7.
With as good as the G4 camera I have been in love with since I got the phone I am really really excited to get the s7 which gets me back the small size I left in favor of the g4's camera (only changed from my Nexus 5 to the g4 because of the camera).

That would be a fair and good idea!
We already have a camera thread. Do we need to open a new one.

Pretty sure that's just your cataract acting up, as there is no blurry fog in any of the S7 pictures.

I think he is just trolling. Looking at his post history, he is posting a lot of S7 camera bashing posts. I think he has the S6 and is butthurt that the camera is better on the S7 so is trying to disprove that, failing in the process. I wouldn't take him on.
