Listen to voice command not working until phone screen is unlocked and on - Wear OS Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have to turn my phone's screen on and unlock in order for a listen to... Or play... command to work, and as soon as I turn my phone on my requested music starts playing. Is there a security setting I need to change to allow instant playback while the phone has its screen off?

I had similar issue. Task not performed until unlock screen. Solved by reboot

After much troubleshooting I was able to find my answer: I need to say either artist+album, artist+song, or Album to get playback to start while the screen is off and phone is locked. Saying "listen to *artist* does not start playback until the screen is turned on, and it appears it will pick a random song to play.

Tool to keep display OFF!

My phone is always waking up for odd reasons (AVRCP commands, switching in and out of roaming, etc...), and I can't seem to get the darned thing to stay OFF.
Music A2DP streaming is the biggest deal to me, because not only will the device wake up when I press a remote command (on my AVRCP headset), it will also keep the device backlight on indefinitely. This is clearly shortening my battery.
I tried Slide2Unlock, and have it set to shut off the display if no activity for 5 sec., but the problem is that Slide2Unlock appears to not notice when it is woken up, and just sits there without turning the screen back off again! (a simple screen press brings Slide2U back to life, and then it will toggle the screen... but this defeats the purpose!)
There must be SOMETHING I'm missing here... doesn't anyone else have this problem???
I have 2 things for you. The first, is if you're using WM6 that's a known issue and unchecking the today timeout in start-->settings-->today-->items tab should solve most of your problems. The second is a little program that I found (not sure where at , but it might have been on here) called screen off. Install it and then set it to a hardware button and it will allow you to turn just your screen off whenever you don't need it on.
Maybe it depends on the player you're using? With Coreplayer, my phone's screen just flashes on and off quickly when it receives an AVRCP command.
Still doesn't explain the roaming thing though.

Yes, I'm using WM6 on a HTC Titan (Sprint Mogul).
I don't currently timeout to the today screen, but I don't see how that would cause my problem really- I've heard people mention that before, so can anyone explain what difference that would make?
I already have a shortcut to screen toggle (wrote my own MortScript to do it). That's not a problem anyway since every media player can assign a button to toggle the screen- The problem is that it keeps turning the screen back on when a button is pressed no matter how many times I toggle!!
Plastriq, I've heard that coreplayer does that... that's how they deal with this problem. They're the only ones that have addressed it as far as I know, and I'm not about to pay for their app when I already have TCPMP and WMP for free.
I just can't believe that there haven't been more practical ways around this yet!

Need major help with screen

I recently got a replacement Vogue only to find that for some reason, when I run Windows Media Player, I cannot turn off the screen using the power button and continue to hear music. The screen has to be on and does not turn itself off which causes major battery drainage . Does anyone have an idea?
My suggestion would be use Nitrogen, much better media player than WMP.
What you can do is change the toggle settings with a button, so the screen itself turns off with whatever button you wanted to map it with. Here's how to do it: Tools>Settings>Buttons then select Screen Toggle, then choose a button, and there ya go Now you will be able to turn the screen off while you rock on!
Alright, I decided to get both Nitrogen and attempt to fix the button settings. Nothing worked. It seems as though the phone recognizes the power button as a close application button rather than a simple sleep button. Putting the phone in sleep (pressing the power button) still turned the music off. Does anyone else have any suggestions? BTW im running WinMo 6.1. To add, I cannot recall this happening before I unlocked the phone, but I am still unsure of whether this still happened or not because I cannot remember.

Here is a way: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms838354.aspx
somewhere there is a cab for this.
here it is: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=1564987&postcount=2
I installed the cab but still nothing. I also took a look at the MSDN post but I have no clue about writing C++ so... Anyone else want to give it a go?
EnterpriseNX01 what did you unlock your phone with?
Also, if I remember correctly before I switched to Android, my phone would not sleep while playing music? Or is you problem that your phone will not go to sleep at all?
I unlocked it with Cokeman's unlocker. I did get an error message that I am just remembering now, Not sure if it has anythign to do with it, but I am running windows 7 x64 and when I ran the unlocker i got an error message about something called sleep.exe. I had another post that someone told me just to ignore it and it would still unlock my phone, which it did. The phone sleeps, but does not play music while it is sleeping, or in idle (i.e. whenever i push the power button to turn the screen off).

All you do is install this,
and then when you have music playing in any program,
tap the power button to put in suspend mode,
and you're good to go.

I used this one, it works on WM6.5, I don't know if it does on earlier builds.

enable music playing with screen off

Hey guys, I can swear that when I first had my TMOUS HD2, I could play music on the sense music player, and could then press the end button to turn the screen off without the music stopping. For whatever reason now, whenever I press end to turn the screen off, however, the music also stops. I can't figure out if I changed a setting anywhere or not, but any ideas? Fyi, I installed TCPMP player and messed with a few of the "play music/video" in the background settings, but I don't think that's what's doing it.
I am not sure about sense player but most of the music players I tried have the turn screen off option. The only player which plays even if the screen is locked from outside the player is the "Pocket Player" (conduits.com). You can change that behavior though.
also if you hit the screen off button (one on the right/hang up button) then hit it again so the lock screen comes up this has made a difference for me... (allows the non windows media player player to keep playing)...
A solution to that will be welcomed. I want my LastFM client to keep on playing after the screen goes off. Currently it starts to stutter and then shuts up.
On the HTC HD, I used the "nueDynamicClock" application, which could maintain (for chosen applications) higher CPU clock while the HD went into suspend. This app does not work on HD2.
Please advice
Thanks
My sense player keeps playing as i hit the hang up button and screen turning off... Don't know if this helps, but here are my versions:
OS: 5.2.21869.5.0.82
Manila: 2.5.19211619.0
ROM: 1.66.409.1 (76641) NOR (Norwegian official updated ROM)
Radio: 2.06.51.07
Anyways, the sense player isn't what i want it to be, it is far too limited, so i use CorePlayer. CorePlayer also plays with the screen off, no problems.
Have you tried using S2U beta (from the people who made S2U2)?
I was having the exact issue, but S2U is a god send. You can control the skip, play/pause and volume buttons with the screen locked.
It's very good, especially if combined with S2U2 for text, email, mms and calendar previews while the phone is locked. Well worth checking out.
There are threads on xda-developers about both.
The funny thing is, I'm on a stock TMOUS rom, and I definitely recall that at least in the beginning, I was able to have the sense music player keep playing with the screen turned off. Thus, there must be a way to get this back again. Any more ideas?

Update: For no apparent reason at all, it seems that my phone has reverted back to "normal" and now allows me to play music in the background with the screen turned off. Did absolutely nothing.
Have you tried the start button and then lock.
I use this when listerning to audio books viaTCPMP

Yup, I can lock the phone just fine without the music turning off, but it's as soon as I then press end to turn the display off (even after locking the phone) that my music suddenly stops playing. And as an update to my previous update, my phone has decided to revert back to pausing as soon as I turn the screen off! Just when I thought all was well...
Once you have locked your phone there is no need to to ress the end key. Your screen will switch off depending on your timeout settings.

Stops playing when the screen off

Hi,
If I don't have my mp3 player with me, there is still some music on my phone. The annoying thing is, it turns off always when I turn off the screen of the device. I am using the original htc player. I don't want to have the screen on, because the phone is in my pocket and it opens all possible stuff while I am moving. Is there a solution to that, or do I need a different player?
download slide 2 play. it is free and does everything you want it to do.
This happens because when you hit the power button you are suspending the device. What you want to do (to keep the music playing) is just turn the screen off without actually suspending the device. Find a program to toggle the screen.

Can't control music/volume when screen is off + phone is unlocked

Hello everyone
I'm having this weird issue with my Nexus 6P (which is afaik on the latest software version) that I did not have with my LG G4 when I had it.
Basically, when I play music from any app (Spotify, Soundcloud, Poweramp, etc), I can't control the music when the screen is shut off and the phone is unlocked.
Let me clarify: I set my phone to not lock automatically when I turn off the screen. I like it that way; there's a 1 min waiting period until it actually locks.
Unfortunately, in that 1-minute waiting period I cannot:
- Adjust the volume using the hardware volume rocker
- Cannot adjust the volume using any sort of headphone control
- Cannot pause or start the music
Until the 1 minute period is over and the device actually locks, or I just turn on the screen and unlock the device.
But this has been very inconvenient, so I want to know what I can do!
Thank you all.
I have the same issue here. It also effect (probably unsurprisingly) control over BT from car radio.
I dont seem to remember this always being the case, only since the last security update I think.
Same issue here... been that way for a week or so now, quite annoying. Restarting the phone doesn't fix it.

I'm getting this too. Anyone find a fix?
Hello, I have the same situation, basically my workaround was to enable the fingerprints setup and have the phone immediately lock with screen off. Then instead of pressing power I trained myself to unlock using either indexes. It is quite fast.
The volume buttons will work off screen only while the phone is truly locked so no smart lock with Bluetooth either; screen off but unlocked doesn't work. I also have problems while driving and using Maps off screen, probably for the same reason.
I filed a bug report with Google, there are a bunch of people with the same problem but this isn't fixed in the monthly updates. I haven't tried the android N preview Good luck!
