Lag,stability Issues after finally OTA upgrading to Lollipop 5.0.1 from rooted 4.4.4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys.... this is one of my first posts here so go easy on me...
Trying to get to the bottom of an issue I'm experiencing on my Nexus 4 16GB after updating.
So I had been postponing updating to Lollipop for months... (was still on 4.4.4 stock cuz I didn't quite like the new UI) and decided to update Sunday (Aug 10th) morning. Big mistake, apparently.
The OTA 5.0.1 update made my phone become unstable, lag, and crash at random. Constantly get "X ins't responding", where X can be anything from Launcher to System UI to Chrome! Regular google apps are generally non-responsive and supper laggy.
For Ex: Can't open Play Store, the app tries to open but all I see is a white app window, same with Photos, or maps... ironically Whatsapp and certain other non-google apps are opening.
So I currently can't even use my N4 much, I'm trying to find out a what's causing this and if I need to revert the upgrade or flash a ROM or something,
My 4.4.4 was rooted FWIW, and now it's not. Not sure if it's helpful, but I have about 1.3GB free internal storage, and 1GB free memory when I run. So I don't think the issues are being caused by an app I installed or some service running wild. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

You could try flashing a factory image of 5.0.1 and see if that helps.

Thanks. Yeah, this seems to have fixed it. Factory flashed it with the stock 5.0.1. Had to wipe it clean but a working phone is a working phone.
So it seems that if you're unlocked and rooted, you're shouldn't install OTA updates?
I read somewhere here (can't find the link rite now) that after 5.0, the OTA updates don't work right, if it detects the bootloader has been unlocked and/or you're rooted? Is this correct?

You might try upgrading to 5.1.1 LMY48I, it is all the bug fixes for 5.+, and should be more stable.

Latest OTA

Just receive message of OTA. It is a small update and file size is 3.4MB. Since I have flashed the latest TWRP that support the OTA update.
I can not see any different version change.

i just recieved it myself on my Android 4.4, it says "fixes bugs" which i haven't felt there was, but i guess it's not everyone that finds the bugs they fix, and maybe the performance will go up a little more, i will bench a little later, depending on how much i have to do at work
Yeah it's mostly under the hood bug fixes. There's no change log but one new 'feature' they found is that it will remind you to set up a backup account if you have multiple Google accounts on the device.

Great to see your investgation what will be updated. But my Nexus 4 has no such update, so it is not for all KitKat devices.
Yeah I checked if it was also up for Nexus 4, sadly its just the N7 up for grabs, Just got the OTA notification, 3MB file.
Also there's this, new build, KRT16S

Maybe I have missed something, but are people receiving a small kitty kat bug fix OTA, even though 4.4 has not actually gone out over the air, but is just being sideloaded?

i read some has gotten OTA but not everyone, i used adb yesterday at work to "sideload" 4.4 on to my Nexus 7 2013 16gb tablet and it just is nice running smooth, no heat around my cam anymore in use.
i normally game a little and use it for Teamviewer. I brought my tablet bcs i was tired of dragging a laptop with me around, bcs i drag it to work everyday.
I basicly when at family, or friends house use my tablet for surfing, teamviewer and all what i used the laptop for it's nice

Nice, just in this forum only one person claims to have received 4.4 OTA. It does seem they are sending out a patch for something that is only available as a factory image that is being sideloaded. Curious.

the factory image and the one that comes on OTA should be the same as far as i know.
but it was pretty easy to flash my tablet, it took a little bcs i had a problem but when i fixed that one it went smoothly and no issues at all.
anyone else's touchscreen get ridiculous after this small OTA? I never had issues, then we got that jellybean OTA to "fix" touch screen issues for certain people, which then proceeded to break my touch screen. then I got kitkat, and it's perfect again, no touch issues anymore.. now I got this OTA and this morning I had to press everything 5 times before it registered! I did a reboot and it went away, but seriously, if they broke touch again, I'm giving up on this tablet.

Where is the update located once it is downloaded, I'm trying to install it with TWRP.
Just got it via OTA (had side loaded KitKat before that). Made me lose root but that should be easily fixed.
I had side loaded 4.4, unlocked and rooted. I got the OTA notification and there was an error installing and now I'm stuck in a bootloop. When it comes up it has dead android with red exclamation point and says "No command."

Same thing happened to me. I got the OTA notification but stoopidly I had SuperSU in OTA survival mode. The update failed and I ended up at the 'No Command' recovery thing you are talking about.
I was able to fix it by manually flashing the /boot, /recovery, and /system partitions (NOT /userdata ) in fastboot using the KRT16S system image that can be found here (https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#razorkrt16s). Everything was okay after that - all of my user data was intact and I was updated to KRT16S :good:

I had to unroot by flashing stock firmware with Odin for the update to take. With root the update would fail at 25%.

I downloaded the firmware from sammobile (4.1.2 was the only one available) then flashed with odin. Sammobile has the basic instructions. Then the 4.4.2 OTA update worked.
I haven't tried rooting yet. But i can save my google music downloads to SD and the glitchy touch screen appears to be fixed
Most of the crapware can also be deactivated running stock
Maybe we got lucky and they unlocked the bootloader; hopefully a developer will be interested enough to check.
I am on stock and still can't get the update. Are they doing this in stages?

Downloading Update Now
Nice surprise when i picked up my Note 8.0 today and the uodate manager started the download!! Will be nice if the "stutters" the note suffers from when typing is fixed (happened as i was typing this).
If anyone is interested I am 100% stock, never rooted, nothing flashed. Dont know if its natiowide rollout but I am im rural Ohio but thew device is a Alaska # & account.
As previously mentioned it would be AMAZING if the bootloader was unlocked but im not holding my breath. And even though i am VERY pleased the update is happening I still cant throw out any " good job AT&T" comments as this, OR ANY, update is BEYOND over due.
Will post thoughts once updated and taken for a spin.

I got my (previously) rooted Note to update simply by checking "Unroot Cleanup" (or a command similar to that) within the settings of SuperSU and then running the update.

After selecting the checkbox within SuperSU it popped up a warning saying, essentially, that it was going to remove root, close itself, and it suggested a reboot after that.
Once clicking OK it only took a few seconds to run and then returned to my homepage.
I rebooted, ran root check which confirmed I was not rooted, and then ran the AT&T update.
After 4 calls to ATT, a visit to Samsung Experience and a call to Samsung I am having to send mine into Samsung no one could get it to update.

NOTE 3 - ROOTED FUN!
I had to flash mine through Odin and then factory wipe, then it took the OTA. When I tried just unrooting it wouldn't and would fail
Tried using the full unroot option in superSU but it kept FC'ing. So I flashed stock firmware with odin. Update worked with no problems.
Does any of the bloatware effect updating? i was thinking maybe thats why some updates are failing after unrooting. Im probably wrong just taking a wild guess.
And PLEASE if anyone gets their note to root after updating to 4.4.2 post how it was done. Thank you in advance.

I couldn't find one. Even Sammobile only had the 4.1.2 firmware.
I have the AT&T SGH-i467, and I got the 4.4.2 update. Woke up to the popup to upgrade. My device was not rooted, stock from AT&T. After the update it would not boot completely. It would boot to the loading screen and flash to the "desktop" on occasion, then back to the loading screen. This would continue for as long as I would allow it, it would get pretty hot while doing this as well, draining the battery. I tried clearing the cache a few times with no luck. I had to factory reset it to get it to boot properly. All is well now. I have not yet experienced the usual screen lag either.
I too had to reload original stock ROM via Odin. The it went through without issue.
have tried to root using "known" methods but currently they all fail.
Hope someone comes thru with a root fix here.
Has anyone managed to locate a download link for this? I've unrooted, flashed back to stock via odin, etc. and cannot seem to get the update. I read somewhere that not having active at&t service on the device would prohibit it from pulling the ota update from at&t's server, which makes sense. However, if anyone has located a download link for this, I'd be grateful for it!

[Q] Contact Synch using loads of data after PA install

I recently installing PA 4.6 Beta 6 on my Nexus 4 because Android 5 just wasn't working out for me. Unfortunately I've encountered a serious problem: my phone is now using about a gigabyte of data per day! I only noticed this when the default data warning limit kicked in, but initially dismissed it as a side-effect of downloading/synching everything after the install. I reset the data limit and thought nothing of it until 2 days later when the 2GB limit kicked in again.
I've installed Network Connections by Anti Spy Mobile which seems to indicate all the data usage is from Google Contact Synch. I can only imagine something is looping, but seriously how could it be using so much data!?
I've un-installed anything I don't use and turned off automatic backup, but the data flood continues. A search for similar problems hasn't revealed anyone else with this problem, so I thought I'd ask on here before removing PA and switching to Cyanogen Mod.
Cheers.
It's not the ROM causing this.
#stayparanoid
Yep - was never insinuating that it was PA; just that it occurred following the install.
Sadly I haven't been able to work out what was causing it and have had to flash a new ROM before heading back to work in the morning or my mobile provider is likely to have a fit. I've flashed CM and will see how it goes, but I may well come back to PA or go the PAC ROM route. I'm definitely a fan of the PA features and am grateful for the work done by the dev team.
Did you try to accept the 5.0 update while on the 4.6 beta? It would probably have come through a notification. If you told it to download, it will never stop trying until you clean flash

It was actually 4.45 I downloaded because I wanted a stable release. After install there were some OTA updates and I did download them assuming anything OTA would be fairly stable, but I didn't know/realise it would have tried to bring down a major new version (5.0). Looks like it could have been my mistake then for thinking it would just be updates to the version I'd installed.
I did take a backup before switching to CM so if I get some time I might flash the backup and check what version it is.

AT&T LG G Pad 7.0 LTE Lollipop Released

Hi all,
For those with the AT&T version of the LG G Pad 7 the Android 5.0.2 update is here. Looks to have been released 2 days ago actually. See http://www.att.com/esupport/softwareUpdateArticle.jsp?sid=KB425003&cv=820
My tablet is not rooted or modified in any way. I checked for updates, says none available so no upgrade for me yet. Will post back once I get it. I've upgraded other devices from KitKat to Lollipop and they are always laggy after the upgrade. I plan to upgrade then factory reset the tablet as that seems to work out much better.
Finally received the update. All went well since I as not rooted or anything like that. Not used it for long but seems a bit more responsive. I did factory reset and set up as new after doing the Lollipop upgrade.
Does anyone know a successful root method. I've tried everything with no luck. There's got to be some way.

No way to root lollipop. I'm back on KK and working on PAC Rom build.

I have the KK source code for the v410. Is there no way to build a KDZ from it? I am guessing there is not because someone would have though of this by now.
I still don't see this update available. Im using it on wifi only, with no sim card. Can this be the issue?
The mobile(SIM) network is used to access protocols(most common is time/date and OTA) that routers ignore. To update go to AT&T and ask for a new SIM or root; custom recovery; flash update.

Is there a manual zip file or something for lollipop? Att with no sim. No OTA available
KingRoot APK worked for me..took two tries..then I replaced their flavor of SU with SuperSU....I still have not been able to custom recovery the beast tho.. Lollipop 5.0.2..tried to Flashify with TWRP 3.0.0.0 Bumped..I get boot certification error when I try to go into recovery.. But I can reboot back into Stock ROM..kinda got cold feet..don't want to hose the device!

Memory woes
I've been running my v410 with lollipop for a while now and was getting pretty discouraged that apps keep crashing. Large apps like games will crash when a calendar notification pops up, etc.
I used KingRoot to gain root and then SuperSUme to replace SU and remove KingRoot bloat. Mostly to kill ads since I'm running stock with no custom recovery (there are only about 6 apps I use that require SU)
So anyway, I recently installed Kernel Adiutor to take a peek at some kernel tweaks. Low and behold, the default low memory killer settings are set super aggressive! The most aggressive preset available in Kernel Adiutor is still only half of the default values. I knocked it down to "moderately aggressive" and my memory problems are gone (mostly). I'm now playing with the Z-RAM settings to try and get my memory usage to be more efficient.
I was afraid I would have to downgrade to KK to get this thing back to usable. Perhaps not...

Please help upgrading Nexus 7 stock 4.4.4

About a year ago I was going to upgrade my nieces stock Nexus 7 wi-fi tablet on 4.4.4 but come to find out there was some bug in the OTA update that would brick the tablet. You had to jump through a bunch of hoops to update it like factory reset. Once my niece heard erase she didn't want any part of that. Fast forward to now and she got a fitbit type device and the software isn't compatible with the current version of the OS. So my question is...Is that bug fixed so I can take the OTA update now or do I still have to jump through all those hoops to do it? If I do have to jump through the hoops then how do I do it? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I did update a few days ago and it was ok untill it was time of the 5.1.1 update - brick, so I downloaded nexus root toolkit to get it quickly done.
Make backup using gmail or just root using nexus tool, backup with titanium backup and update to 5.1.1 or custom without worry

Ok so I root with the tool and then flash the 5.1.1 rom or do I have to go up in order?
Go to settings, about device, updates and install all the way up to 5.1.1, it might be a few updates. If the error shows then just use toolkit to recover nexus from soft brick and that's it

Ok I used the tool and flashed the 5.1.1 stock image on it and relocked the bootloader. Now it is very laggy. Anyway to fix this?

The stock 5.1.1 image makes the Nexus 7 really laggy, even when running the ParrotMod fix found in another thread.
My recommendation would be to run Pure Nexus ROM by GtrCraft (links are in the Download section for ROM and GApps, which you need for Google App Store and services). Of course, use the Nexus Toolkit or TWRP as the easiest ways to flash.
Then, flash the ParrotMod fix by parrotgeek1 to help speed it up.
Once all done, it should be as fast as it will get and you won't have any updates or OTA updates to install. Pure Nexus ROM has SuperSU in it, so it will be rooted. Some apps will not work when rooted, so keep that in mind (mainly banking and some streaming apps).

Well I would rather not have it rooted if I can help it. I don't want my niece getting into anything a messing it up. I have read that the marshmallow pure aosp is much smoother or was that what you were talking about? Can I flash that with the nexus tool? I want to keep everything buttoned up for her.
You can use tool to flash recovery TWRP, then boot recovery copy rom aosp or slim or whatever you like, flash it and you're good to go. It'll take up to 15min.
Just read rom description and follow install instruction

Sorry for my ignorance but if I use the aosp rom I would have to keep it rooted or no? When I updated to 5.1.1 I just unlocked the BL and then flashed 5.1.1 and then relocked it. Should I have installed a recovery? I didn't think I should since I didn't want to keep it rooted.

There really isn't anything to mess up when the tablet is rooted. It mainly just gives you access to more settings and more customization.
If you are dead-set on using a non-rooted ROM, you could also use CyanogenMod, which is updated regularly.
