Top part of screen stops responding to touch occasionally - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After a while the top part of my screen will completely stop responding to touch. I can't pull down the notification area or press anything on the upper portion of the phone. After, I reboot it works for about 30 seconds and then the top part of the screen will stop working again. The only thing that will fix it is to wait it out. Maybe a few hours later it will start working again. Then a couple days later and the same thing happens. I think maybe my phone is overheating from some app or something and then it causes this to happen for some reason. That would I guess explain why it starts working after while, because the phone had a chance to cool off
Anybody else experience this?

Yes your not alone with this issue.
This happened to my galaxy S8 plus after using twitter.
I uninstalled the app but I hadn't regained the ability of touch response.
I don't have a backup device but have ordered an older model so that I can further diagnose.
In the meantime I found an app to help counteract the problem. ie. Rotation - Orientation Manager
To be clear this is the top portion of the screen from Very top to about a half inch down.
I verified by using a touch sensor test app. ie. Yet Another MultiTouch Test
I've also did the soft reset, clear cache, and since I use a third party Home Launcher reinstalled it. ie. Nova Launcher Prime
Good luck!

Home button opens clock

Hi!
I just had a very weird bug. Suddenly when I pressed the home button the stock clock app (which I think is useless by the way) opened. When I pressed again the phone didn't switch to my home screen but stayed in the clock app.
When I tried to put the phone in standby and wake it up again my lock screen didn't show up, it was the stupid clock again.
I rebooted my phone and now everything is like it should be...
I'm running 2.3.4 (not rooted) with Launcher Pro.
Anyone else familiar with this problem?
I believe that you can set home button behavior in Launcher Pro. Not sure about the lock screen though.
I've had the same issue, always resolves itself though, especially after a reboot. Odd bug but doesn't occur enough to bother me.
But I agree the clock app seems largely useless, I have no wish to leave my phone screen on all night, and I can access alarm clock, gallery etc fine without.
I had this issue in January when I first got the phone, I guess on 2.3.1 or so. Anyways, the buttons did random things, and launching App A would result in App C launching instead, if you get what I mean. For example, I'd try to open Dolphin browser and Youtube would come up instead. I'm not sure why this occurred, and a simple restart fixed it. I wouldn't worry too much unless it keeps happening.
I only had it happen to me the one time.
I'm also experiencing this on my Nexus S, First the Car/Dock Mode appeared out of nowhere. It literally just launched itself while I was working at my desk! Now the home button pen up the clock App. Windows can't even detect the Nexus S now. No "you phone is plugged, mount it?" dialog box.

Okay so I think I may have found a solution. I set my Nexus S beside my iPad 2 last night before going bed. I think it may have been the caused of magnets. yup. magnets. So I tried contacting both together. The iPad 2 reacted and lit up its screen and voila the Nexus S home button now works as a HOME and not a CLOCK button! I know its a little weird, may just be a coincidence for all I know! But mine works fine now.
Try it and let us know if this works for you!
Let me resurrect a dead thread here with a new solution. I began building my roms from source on the NS4G and immediately this bug appeared in them. Funny thing is only on my phone none of the testers had this issue. I decided to overwrite desk clock with desk clock pro on the market for free, and it knocked out the bug, and I still have my alarms for work.

[Q] Droid X Screen Problem - Hardware or Software?

The phone has been working very well, no problems of any kind. It is rooted and I'm using Go Launcher along with Widget Locker for the lock screen.
I just updated the Widget launcher application and everything was working just fine.
However, the last time I woke the phone, the display was bonkers. The lower 1/3 of the screen was grey, over writing the icons for the functions located there on the home screen. When I scroll through the home screens, the lower 1/3 continues to be greyed out. However on close inspection, the underlying icons can bee seen and are activated with a touch as normal.
The overwriting seems to be somewhat of a repeat of the top 1/3 of the screen. With the moto lock screen there is a digital clock displayed in the upper part of the screen and that is showing up in the lower third also.
This greying out is more like a Ghosting effect. The screen also has a general background flicker in the upper section that is not greyed out or ghosted over. I did nothing like dropping the phone or dunking it. This does have what I would somewhat characterize as connection issue. BWDIK.
Does anyone have any idea as to what could have caused this to pop up as a problem? The new version of Widget Locker seemed to be doing just fine and I had configured it to take more icons in the ICS default theme. Everything was going great until it suddenly was not.
Suggestions or accounts of similar problems would be appreciated. I sure hope there is a cure. The phone has been great and darned capable. I'd hate to have to change it out.
Reboot your phone.
If that doesnt work, make a backup in Clockwork and wipe data.
If that doesn't work, it's hardware related.

Thanks for the help.
Could you be a little more specific as to how to make the backup and then restore?
I've restarted the phone several times. That won't clear it up.
Download droid2bootsrtap>install>flash recovery>reboot recovery
Scroll to backup/restore (use vol keys select w/ camera key)
Select backup, let it do it's thing
Select wipe data
Reboot
Thanks for the additional help.
That did not seem to get the job done for me. I still have the problem with the top third of the screen being displayed again as an overwrite of the bottom third.
One odd thing did occur while I was working on this. I had the phone connected to the charger. It was in "sleep" mode with a dark screen. I picked up the phone, pushed the wake up button top. and at the same time I disconnected from the charger. When the screen first displayed it was displaying correctly and clearly with no overwrite. I don't believe I have a failed display in the sense of dead sections or pixels. It seems that there is some cross connection in how it is being addressed so that the upper one third is being written twice, one of those being an overwrite of the lower one third. The icons that should be showing in the lower third dispaly are visible through the "fog" created by the overwrite.
I have contacted the local smartphone Mr. Fixit and ordered the new screen. The problem may be deeper than that though. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I like the way the phone operates and am getting to understand it after about a year of working with it. It is rooted with the handy WiFi tether operating, along with a few simple customizations. It would be great to get it sorted out as I don't want to go the upgrade route at this time.
Have you tried reSBFing? I had a similar problem, except the lower 3/4 of screen went black. Got an insurance replacement, but when i was wiping my old phone, i SBFd, and the screen worked again. Granted, i still had to send the phone in, so no idea how long it would've lasted.

Nothing to do with SBF'ing. The phone is rooted, and it worked the first time, several months prior to the problem.
I finally got the screen replaced and that part is working well. Nice and bright with no ghosting of another section. However, I now have developed a problem with the dialer turning off the screen when the call starts dialing. No capability of using number pad or even hitting the End Call button. Returns to the default lockscreen when call ends from a disconnect on the other end. still a great mystery.
Question: how's your camera working?

[Q] Verizon G2 buggy touch screen?

Is anyone else having issues with the touch screen triggering at different places when touched, or randomly knocking off the phone when you're not even touching the phone? I turned off my knockon feature, but I would see my notification bar be highlighted without me touching it. Just wondering if i'm the only one with this problem.
No issues at all.

this glitch is kinda what happened with mine, and i confirmed what it was doing
in swiftkey, you know how tehre's the option to change the long press delay? well i was holding down that little bar to drag it down, and i noticed while holding it inplace, the numbers were going crazy..it was going up/donw/up/down incredibly fast, instead of just staying stationary..i was like, wtf? so i went to dev options, turned on show touch points and the trace so i could see the axis, and i noticed it was freaking out. holding my finger in place, it was as if it was moving around like crazy.
so i did a factory reset and flashed the clean verizon rom scott posted, and it hasn't done it since. no idea wtf was going on. i realized it was messing up bc my typing became really bad, and it would enter things i didn't type.
Touch Screen has a mind of its own - bad digitizer??
I woke up today to find my screen on, showing the lock screen which I found odd. Now most of the time the screen has a mind of its own where basically its like an invisible finger is randomly touching the screen at a frantic place. This opens up apps, moves icons around, calls people if the phone app manages to get opened, etc. After struggling to override the "invisible finger" I've done a reboot from the power menu, powered off from the power menu and left it off for 10 minutes before turning off and held down the power and volume down button to reboot. None of these methods fixed the problem0
Please note I did accept the Verizon update but was good on it for a day prior to this issue. I have installed minimal 3rd party apps and can't attribute the problem to starting right after installing something. I do use the Ghost 100 wireless charger but have been using this from day 1 without issues so I don't think that'a problem either. The Verizon store sold me this charger and although its not listed as being compatible on Verizon's website I have a feeling that's cause the phone is so new. The charger is WPC certified. Being that this problem is intermittent (happens way more often than not) I think it may be a software issue and I'm about to do a hard factory reset. If that doesn't work then I'm convinced its a hardware issue and probably a bad digitizer. I've been very gentle with the phone - haven't dropped it, no moisture or water exposure, not rooted, etc. I'll report back if the factory reset works. Anyone else having the same or a similar issue?

You're not alone! My G2 has been driving me crazy the last couple of days when trying to use the lockscreen. It'll spaz out and either skip a connection of display a whole different pattern than I drew. It will also shut off the screen and reset the "wrong password" counter. I love this phone but this is super aggravating!
Hard reset didn't help at all. I went to a Verizon store and they exchanged for a new one and determined I had a hardware failure.

Random issues on separate days (SM-935FD)

Hi all,
I have a black S7 Edge International version (Dual Sim version). The phone as a whole has been working great. I have been having certain issues though, they don't happen very often. So I'm not sure if its related to certain apps I have or if it's an issue with the phone.
Each issue happened on a separate day.
First problem: The phone froze when I was editing a photo on Adobe Lightroom. This was the first time I was using the app, so I launched after installing it. I tweaked a photo and noticed the phone lagging. They it froze, and I couldn't do anything on the screen. Nothing worked until I did a hard reset. Afterwards, the problem didn't occur again, although I haven't tried Lightroom since, so maybe I should, to see if the problem is with the app. Does this happen often with lightroom? Or could this be a phone issue?
Second Problem: On another day I had my phone randomly start vibrating, like it was receiving a call. I had just made three calls to my wife, and thought she was calling back. However, there was no call notification, and nothing on the drop down menu. There was also no ringtone. The phone kept vibrating, and wouldn't stop. I pressed the power button and reset, then the problem stopped.
Final problem: Today, I've been using the phone fine. However I was playing angry birds and then pressed the home button, so the game was still on it's memory, and being multitasked. I used the phone again a few times, then I noticed on the bottom that the game launcher circle (was on the bottom of my homescreen), even though the game was not open (still in the multitask window - I assumed) I tried to click the multitask window, and the button lit up, but nothing happened. The multitask window had frozen. Again it required a restart, and now it's working.
Given that I'm having these three issues (none have repeated themselves though), is this just the phone needing an OTA update, early phone bugs, specific 3rd party app issues, or is it a more serious problem?
Should I take the phone to Samsung and ask for a replacement, or should I wait it out?
Would love some advice from people, and would also like to hear if you've had similar problems.
Current firmware I'm on: G935FXXU1APB6
Thanks!
Does anyone have any feedback on this? Thanks!
I have the first problem on my phone.
But I didn't use adobe lightroom
and I've seen many user reported this problem in many different threads. it seen a known issue.
Thanks for that stone... Hopefully it's a bug... Would love to hear if anyone thinks that it requires a replacement... Also, i just found a dead pixel on the top corner of my phone... it's completely black...
Is that grounds for replacing the phone, or is samsung wishy washy about the whole thing?
I have the second problem; sudden vibrations with no reason, no app pending or anything else; I start to think it is associated with the Smart Alarm being activated (in Advanced settings).....
Anyway, really a bug, in fact the Smart Alarm and Smart Stay are known for having made other problems previously, but seems they didn't correct all the bugs.....

If there's a dead pixel I would return it.... There has been alot of people talking about freezing and rebooting... I've experienced too.... Most likely a software issue.... When I got the S6 last year my phone would reboot 3-5 times a day until a software update came out.... The continuous vibration I haven't heard anyone talk about... But if your still in you grace period I would get another phone for the pixels alone... Too nice and new to have to deal with that
Galaxy S7 edge
Hey, I have the same phone with the same firmware. I experienced the freezing right after I opened the camera from the lock-screen, it lasted for a few minutes and then went away. I'm waiting till Sunday to get the OTA and if I don't, I'm just going to update using Odin, considering how the firmware for the SM-G935FD and SM-G935F is the same.
Sounds good, thanks for the advice guys... I went to Samsung, and they said they would replace the phone for the dead pixel... Will take a week to arrive, but I'm just glad it's getting replaced...
I would return it immediately while it is within your return period.

Screen Freezes During Gaming

Hi all,
I've gotten this weird issue where my touch screen would freeze momentarily and randomly whenever I play some games (i.e. Scribblenauts Unlimited, NFS No Limits, GTASA, and Dead Trigger 2). While unlocking and waking up the phone would fix this issue immediately, I find these freezes to be extremely annoying. Interestingly, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp seems to be free from this issue. In addition, I've never experienced it outside of games.
Initially, I did suspect heat to be behind it, but then I found out that those freezes also happen whenever I just boot up those games (and therefore the phone is yet to heat up). Anyone has any idea on what's going on here? I really hope it's not some kind of funky HW defect.
OK, here's an update: I'm quite positive that this is a software issue. Just had the freeze again but I could access notification shade. The shade worked and I tried to open up setting menu, and it worked. Now, the touchscreen worked flawlessly in setting and the subsequent home menu... and when I went back to the game, it froze again.
And I think this one's also relevant: a user over at reddit said that their screen would also freeze whenever they touch the phone's back while playing. Well, I happen to not touch the PH-1's back whenever I'm playing Pocket Camp thanks to its portrait orientation...
